Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom?

— James 2:5 Today’s Readings

Reading I: Isaiah 35: 4-7a The prophet announces that the age of salvation has arrived. The Southern desert will flower, and physical healing will abound. Reading II: James 2: 1-5 God’s glory should cancel out all taint of partiality in our relationships, such as a person’s status or worldly rank. In God’s kingdom, both rich and poor are invited to feast heartily. The Gospel: Mark 7: 31-37 After the miraculous healing, Jesus com-mands the crowd to be silent about it. He wants them to know that He is more than a healer. The crowd’s opinion of Jesus echoes words found in the First Reading today from Isaiah, wherein Christ’s activity makes the Kingdom of God present.

Readings for the Week Monday: Col 1:24 - 2:3; Ps 62:6-7, 9; Lk 6:6-11 Tuesday: Col 2:6-15; Ps 145:1b-2, 8-9, 10-11; Lk 6:12-19 Wednesday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Ps 13:6ab, 6c; Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 Thursday: Col 3:12-17; Ps 150:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6; Lk 6:27-38 Friday: 1 Tm 1:1-2, 12-14; Ps 16:1b-2a, 5, 7-8, 11; Lk 6:39-42 Saturday: 1 Tm 1:15-17; Ps 113:1b-2, 3-4, 5, 6-7; Lk 6:43-49 Sunday: Is 50:5-9a; Ps 116:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9; Jas 2:14-18; Mk 8:27-35

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Journey of Faith Begins with Questions

What is faith? How does it grow? What do Catholics believe and why is it different from other faith traditions? What does it mean to become a Catholic? How do I more fully enter into the Catholic Faith?

Perhaps you or someone you know has such questions. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process to explore these and other questions. It is often called a journey of faith in which we welcome others to the Catholic family. It is a program for those who have never been baptized, were baptized in other faith traditions, or were baptized in the Catholic faith but never complet-ed the Sacraments of First Communion and/or Confirmation.

If you or someone you know wants to learn more about this journey, we will be hosting an RCIA Information Session on Monday, Sept.13th at 7:30PM (this is a revised date) in the Ministry Center 1st Floor Meeting Room. Please contact Dea-con George at [email protected] or 201-218-8555 if you/someone you know would like to attend, has any questions, or would like to confidentially discuss anything prior to the Info Session.

One Final Gift Thank you for all the gifts you shared with me over the past 13 years. Although I did not do everything even close to perfect you did come to know I always did what I thought was best for the overall parish community.

As far as this last month was concerned I was overwhelmed by your response. The number of thoughtful cards and notes will be my first task in my retirement. Your financial support will allow me to pursue independent living in the year ahead as I try to discern my final landing spot. All of it humbled me a great deal.

I hate to be greedy at a time like this but there is one final ask, one final gift that I seek. Please continue to grow as the fine Christian community we are. Be kind to those less fortunate, con-tinue the outreach, be kind to the priests, deacons, staff and min-istry leaders. COVID has been a break off point for many people and we need new people to get involved. Finally, be kind to one another, without that there can be no Christianity.

And just remember 3 little words, I love you!

Adult Choir is Back! We are thrilled to announced that the Adult Choir will be resuming rehearsal and singing at mass. Our next rehearsal is on Wednesday, Sept. 8th at 7:30PM in the Hope Rm. Enter thru the Bell Tower.

We are very much in need of new members so come and check it out - no obligation. We haven't sung together in over a year so we will be starting with the basics. There's never been a better time to come and give it a try! Can't wait to see you there.

Reopen Refresh Renew! As we look to restart the many ministries at our parish, there are several opportunities this month to come and worship and celebrate Eucharist as a parish family.

Saturday, 9/11 Please join us at 5PM on Saturday, 9/11, for a musical prelude ahead of the 5:30 Mass, dedicated to remem-bering the 9/11 attacks on this, the 20th anniversary.

Sunday, 9/12 All Masses, including 5:30 Saturday – Blessing of Grandparents In honor of “Grandparents Day”, a blessing will be given to all Grandparents. Grandparents, invite your grand-kids to attend mass with you! Kids, invite your grandparents!

Sunday, 9/12 10AM Mass – Blessing of the Backpacks All students are invited to bring their backpacks to the 10AM Mass to have them blessed as we celebrate the start of the new school year.

Sunday, 9/19 10AM Mass – Catechetical Sunday (“Say the word and my soul shall be healed”) All catechists are invited to join us as we re-commission and bless our catechists.

“Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?”

- JAMES 2:5

What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society tells us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first and experience true joy and peace. When we put possessions first, we soon realize we can never have enough and happiness is fleeting. When we put faith over possessions we truly realize it is better to give than receive.

Thank you for your continued generosity to St. Catharine’s!

This retreat is ON-SITE with no social distancing, but will also be taking place VIRTUALLY, if there is enough interest, so please indicate on the registration form below whether you will be attending in-person or virtually.

Every day we make innumerable decisions — when to get up, what to wear, the first thing we will do, what we read, where we will go. Most of these we barely think about or spend much time in making. However, there are other decisions that have life-long ramifications for us. These we often spend a great deal of time and thought making. They include vocation decisions such as education, marriage, children and career. Even more important than those, are what we call our spiritual decisions.

Spiritual decisions arise from questions such as: “Why am I alive?” “What is my destiny?” “What is most important in life?” “What is God asking of me?” Join us as we discuss what spiritual decisions entail and what they are. Have I made a spiritual decision? What have I decided? How do I know if it comes from God? How do I engage my decision so that it changes my life? Retreat Director Fr. Steve Pugliese, S.J.
