SUNDAY CONNECTION—LOYOLA PRESS
First Reading Amos 6:1,4-7 God will judge the complacency of the people and their leaders.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 146:7-10 Happy are those who find solace in God, the help of the poor.
Second Reading 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Paul exhorts Timothy to stay faithful to God in all things.
Gospel Reading Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells the parable of the reversal of fortunes between the rich man and the poor man, Lazarus.
Background on the Gospel Reading
A major theme in the Gospel of Luke is the importance of the care of the poor in the life of
discipleship. In the parable found in today's Gospel, Jesus contrasts the life of a rich man
and the poor man, Lazarus, who lives in the shadow of the rich man and his wealth. Both
die. Lazarus finds himself in heaven; the rich man in the netherworld. The rich man asks
for assistance from Lazarus in his torment. But Abraham reminds the rich man of the good
things he had in his life and describes the current situation as a reversal of fortunes. The
rich man then asks that Lazarus be sent to warn his family, but this is denied with the
reminder that Moses and the prophets have warned of judgment for those who neglect
the care of the poor.
In the context of Luke's Gospel, this parable, delivered in the presence of a crowd of
listeners, is part of Jesus' response to some Pharisees. These Pharisees are described in
Luke's Gospel as “loving money.” (Note: The Pharisees were followers of a sect of Judaism
active before, during, and after Jesus' lifetime. They taught an oral interpretation of the
Law of Moses as the basis for popular Jewish piety. They put less emphasis on Temple
worship and more on applying the law to everyday life. Though they are often portrayed
negatively in the Gospels, they shared many of Jesus' and the early Church's concerns
about the law.) Jesus observed that the actions of some Pharisees betrayed misplaced
priorities: they spoke one way, but acted in another. The story of the rich man and Laza-
rus demonstrates the importance of the care of the poor and is a reminder to those who
would follow Jesus of the unimportance of wealth in the eyes of God.

PB and J We will be meeting on TUESDAY nights at 7:00 to make room for the Alpha program that will be taking place in the cafeteria from September 16 through Thanksgiving. Everyone wanting to help make sandwiches should bring 1-2 loaves of bread. Other items that we need are smooth peanut butter, jelly or jam, plastic sandwich bags (fold overs preferred), dollar store table cloths, basic cleaning supplies, paper towels, hand soap and copy paper boxes. Blessing Bags: The Babylon Interfaith Homeless Initiative houses those in need from the first Wednesday in December till the last Wednesday in March. We have been asked to supply them with 700 (gallon size) ziplock bags with the following items: wash cloths, toothpaste, tooth brushes, soap, shampoo, disposable razors, shave cream, deodorant. Optional items: conditioner, combs, chapstick and tissues. Since wash cloths are on the higher ends of some folks budgets, we will take gently used, clean towels that we can cut to wash cloth size. Store cards are also greatly appreciated for both P B and J or the Blessing Bags. We will be putting these bags together sometime in October, date to be announced. Many thanks for your ongoing generosity!

Prayer For Safety of Our Service
Men & Women Almighty and Eternal God, protect these men and women as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety to all who love them. May they ever praise you for your loving care.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. =====================================
A note about low gluten/gluten free hosts:
Hosts that are completely gluten-free are
invalid matter for the celebration of the Eucharist.
The hosts we use at Sacred Heart are not gluten
free. However, they are made of wheat starch
(wheat flour from which much of the gluten protein
has been removed) plus water. It’s gluten content is
<.001% or 10ppm.
The church considers “low-gluten” hosts to
have enough gluten to be “valid matter,” the F.D.A.
says the hosts are low enough in gluten to be
considered gluten-free. But, those with high
sensitivity should consult their doctors.

Spiritual Adoption Program to Begin in One Week --
Pray for an Unborn Baby
Did you know…
Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month,
and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday.
Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that
love, we will begin an adoption program on Oct. 5 & 6. We will have the
opportunity next weekend to “spiritually” adopt a child who is newly
conceived during this month.
Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than
4,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you are
being asked to “adopt”. You may “adopt” a child individually or as a
family. You will be asked to name the child for whom you will be praying,
thereby giving the baby the humanity he or she deserves. You will be asked
to pray for your unborn child and for all unborn children, for the power of
prayer is great.
Adoption prayer cards will be in the pews next weekend, please take one and
keep it with you for the next nine months. You will receive monthly reports
through the bulletin describing your baby’s development and birth. In the
spring our parish will host a “baby shower”. The collected gifts will be
donated to local maternity centers and shelters.
There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers.
Won’t you please “spiritually adopt” one and share the love for life that God
have given you?
The newly formed Respect Life Committee at Outreach hopes to offer many
opportunities in the coming year to get involved and express our
commitment, as a parish, to promote respect for life in all it’s stages.
