Almost 1500 hundred years ago St. Gregory the Great had advice for pastors. He
urged them to preach the truth with absolute courage and conviction. He reminded
them that they were the guardians of the flock of God. Although he did not use the
term “people pleasers”, Gregory told them not to be dumb dogs and address the
challenges to Catholic faith and morality. He realized that they could become timid
and fearful to announce clearly Catholic teaching and let the chips fall where they
may.
Right now in our country there is an enormous discussion of abortion and the
famous case of Roe v. Wade. This, of course, has been occasioned by the nomina-
tion of a prospective Supreme Court Justice. It is thought by many that he might be
a decisive vote to weaken or overturn the abortion decision of 1973. The fact is no
one knows for sure what a Justice might or might not do when he or she has been
finally seated on the High Court for life. People change and their opinions do.
This discussion is also caused by the plain and simple fact that abortion as an issue
will not go away from the American conscience no matter how much talk, propa-
ganda and controversy go on.
I am a realist when it comes to this moral issue. We may never win in the courts–or
even in the Supreme Court. But you never know what might happen. We as Catho-
lics put our trust in the Triune God and know that if we rely totally on politi-
cians or pundits (no matter their affiliation or point of view) we may well be
terribly disappointed. This is a column about Catholic moral teaching and not
about politics.
We Catholics have a responsibility to be good and faithful citizens—but we
must always remember that our primary citizenship is in heaven and the val-
ues of Jesus Christ may never be compromised or denied. Catholics need to
have a backbone and state the truth. Many will dislike the truth. Christ died because
He told the truth and He was rejected. We will be rejected; we will be called old-
fashioned and behind the times. This is all because we and many others who are
not Catholics utterly reject abortion and declare in the most unmistakable terms that
abortion is the unjust an immoral direct killing of an innocent child.
The moral law has been established by God. It cannot be interpreted, refined, al-
tered or changed in the least by the Supreme Court or any other court whatso-
ever. We know that there are places in this country where assisted suicide is legal.
Who knows what will come next. The fact is that in Western civilization religion
and faith are on a downward spiral. With that in mind, nothing should really sur-
prise us. Our task is to live by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to defend it, and not turn

cowards in the face of bitter attacks because of our defense of human life from conception to

COMMEMORATES FIFTIETH
ANNIVERSARY OF
HUMANE VITAE Fifty years ago, on July 25, 1968, Pope Paul VI issued an Encyclical Letter entitled Hu-
manae Vitae, “On Human Life”. On October 14, 2018, Pope Francis will canonize his
predecessor as Pope Saint Paul VI.
In this anniversary year, Bishop John O. Barres of the Diocese of Rockville Centre has
issued a Pastoral Letter entitled The Supreme Gift: The Gift of Life, commemorating the
encyclical of this soon-to-be-canonized saint. This teaching of the late Holy Father is in
many ways more important today than at any time before.
In his letter, Bishop Barres wants to teach the people of the diocese the important truths
of Humanae Vitae, because these truths very much need to be reexamined today in light
of the problems we face in our time.
Copies of The Supreme Gift will be available shortly. Please take it home, read it, and
discuss it as married couples and as families. Bishop Barres says: “Understanding the
teaching of Humanae Vitae, believing it, and living it, is one of the first and most impor-
tant answers to the crisis of our time. I truly believe that the future Pope Saint Paul VI
wrote the letter more for our times than even for his own. Today, it can become the first
step in repairing the injury between men and women, husbands and wives, parents and
children, the family and society.”
At the Mass of Beatification of Pope Paul VI in 2014, Pope Francis said of his
predecessor:
“When we look to this great Pope, this courageous Christian, this tireless apostle,
we cannot but say in the sight of God a word as simple as it is heartfelt and impor-
tant: thanks! Thank you, our dear and beloved Pope Paul VI! Thank you for your
humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church! … In [his] humil-
ity the grandeur of Blessed Paul VI shines forth: before the advent of a secularized
and hostile society, he could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom – and at
times alone – to the helm of the barque of Peter, while never losing his joy and his
trust in the Lord.”

The Gospel is from St. Mark 6:30-34. In these few verses St. Mark very strongly brings out
the compassion the human understanding of Jesus for man: He first planned to give the Apos-
tles a well-earned rest. They had evidently worked hard while out on their mission and a few
days rest would restore their lost energy. He himself, too, must have been hard pressed,
preaching and dealing with the crowds. In the absence of the Apostles he had no one to help
him—he too needed a rest. He, therefore, planned that he and they should go to a quiet corner of the Sea of
Galilee where there was no village and where, therefore, they would not be disturbed.
The desire of the crowds, however, to see him and to hear him speak upset these plans. The people got to the
quiet spot first. There they were waiting when the boat pulled to shore. He could have sent them away, but
again his human compassion took over. Seeing these simple people of Galilee so anxious to hear about God
and his mercy, he let them stay and began to preach the good news of forgiveness and hope to them. For the
most part they were simple, unlettered villagers, shepherds and fishermen. They knew a little about the Law of
Moses but only a little. There was no one but the local rabbi to teach them and the local rabbis were not very
educated at the time. The doctors of the law, the great theologians were all in Jerusalem where they got the re-
spect and the financial reward which they felt they merited. Hence the people of the country were more or less
forgotten and neglected. They were, as our Lord described them, “like sheep without a shepherd,” wandering
about half-lost.
They were certainly fortunate, however, in finding the true shepherd who would lead them to the eternal pas-
tures. Not only would he now sacrifice his rest to come to their aid but he would, later on, lay down his life for
them and for all of us. We, like those poor people of Galilee, have so much to be grateful for. The compas-
sionate Christ has had pity on us too, and has brought us into his fold. He knows all our infirmities and all our
human weaknesses, and he is ever-ready to have pity on us and pardon us. Those people of Galilee were not
saints, they were ordinary, run-of-the mill, not over religious people. They cheated one another; they were of-
ten uncharitable to one another; they were not always chaste and pure; they prayed very little and perhaps only
when they wanted some material benefit. Yet our Lord had compassion on them.
This should give us confidence, great encouragement. Christ has not changed: he is the same yesterday, today
and forever. He has the same compassion for us that he had for those Galileans; we too are often like sheep
without a shepherd wandering half-lost through life. He is ever calling us to come to himself so that he will
lead us to safe pastures.
LITURGY CORNER
Part TWO of the current Catechism goes deeper into the Liturgy beginning
with Section One Chapter One Articles 1 and 2. It first looks at The Liturgy
as the Work of the Holy Trinity, then The Pascal Mystery in the Church’s
Sacraments. Here is a summary from the In Brief reviews of these two Arti-
cles.
In the liturgy of the Church, God the Father is blessed and adored as the source of all the
blessings of creation and salvation with which he has blessed us in his Son, in order to give
us the Spirit of filial adoption. Christ’s work in the liturgy is sacramental: because his mys-
tery of salvation is made present there by the power of his Holy Spirit; because his Body,
which is the Church, is like a sacrament in which the Holy Spirit dispenses the mystery of
salvation; and because through her liturgical actions the Church already participates… in
the heavenly liturgy. The mission of the Holy Spirit in the liturgy of the Church is to pre-
pare the assembly to encounter Christ; to recall and manifest Christ to the faith of the as-
sembly; to make the saving work of Christ present and active by his transforming power;
and to make the gift of communion bear fruit in the Church.
The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the
Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments
are celebrated signify and make present the graces (of) each sacrament. They bear fruit in
those who receive them with the required dispositions. The Church celebrates the sacra-
ments as a priestly community structured by the baptismal priesthood and the priesthood of
ordained ministers. The Holy Spirit prepares the faithful for the sacraments by the Word of
God and the faith which welcomes that word in well-disposed hearts. Thus the
sacraments strengthen faith and express it. The fruit of sacramental life is both personal and
ecclesial.
For every one of the faithful on the one hand, this fruit is life for God in Christ Jesus; for
the Church, on the other, it is an increase in charity and in her mission of witness.
Simply put, God the Father is the source of all creation and gave us his Son through Whom
we, His Body in the Church, have been saved from sin and are welcomed as adopted sons
and daughters of God. The Holy Spirit enables is to more fully partake of the gift of the
Son in the Liturgy. The sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ as the most effective
method by which His grace is bestowed upon us. The Holy Spirit helps us more fully par-
ticipate in the Liturgy and in the reception of the sacraments so that we are properly pre-
pared to receive God’s grace. This grace is not only for our personal benefit, but also for
the Church as a whole, because since we are all members of Christ’s mystical Body, the
Church, the more we respond to this grace, the better the Church as a whole can carry out
her mission.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and 3 foster parents are suing the City in a religious
freedom case centered on the placement of children in foster care.
Despite issuing a recent plea for more candidates for foster care, the City of Philadel-
phia has abruptly ended contracts with Catholic Social Services (CSS) and Bethany Chris-
tian Services because it disagrees with their teaching on marriage and family. These
Christian agencies do not interview same-sex couples as candidates for foster
care. Instead, they refer these couples to dozens of other agencies that do place children
in same-sex homes.
However, these agencies do work with LGBT youth. But, their religious convictions do
not allow them to place any children into homes headed by LGBT adults. "CSS is, at its
core, an institution founded on faith-based principles," said spokesman Ken Gavin.
"As such, CSS would not be able to consider foster care placement within the context of a
same-sex union."
Three women who have cared for foster children for many years were named as plain-
tiffs and charged that the city's actions discriminate against them "for their religious be-
liefs and practices (and) unlawfully try to coerce them to speak contrary to their religious
beliefs ..."
"What justice is there in taking stable, loving homes away from children?" said one
foster parent. "If the city cuts off CSS, foster moms like me won't have the help and sup-
port they need to care for the special-needs kids."
Another foster parent said, "I have relied on CSS for (professional) support for years and
the city is taking away this help and is causing harm and heartache to countless families
like mine."

CHALLENGES - 2017 was a record-setting
year for Knights of Columbus charitable work
with an unprecedented $185.6 million in dona-
tions and 75.6 million hours of service world-
wide. "Once again, the Knights of Columbus
showed the enormous difference we can make in
the lives of others by putting our faith in action,"
said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. "The needs
of many of our communities were particularly great in 2017, especially in
the wake of historic hurricanes in Houson, South Florida, Puerto Rico and
much of the Caribbean. The Knights did not hesitate to provide assistance
after these humanitarian crises and in Mexico where two cities were badly
damaged by earthquakes. The K of C continues to support communities
through programs like: Disaster Relief $7.5 million, Christian Refugee
Relief $6.3 million, Food Drives $7.6 million and Special Olympics $14.7
million just to name a few.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Our Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the
second and fourth Monday of each month at 9:45 AM in the Peter and
Paul Room of the Finamore Center to knit or crochet prayer shawls or
lap blankets for the sick and homebound parishioners. New members
are always welcome. You need not know how to knit or crochet. We
have talented parishioners who can teach you. The next meeting will take place

CATECHISTS NEEDED: Plans are in progress for the 2018-2019 School Year! We are looking for people who are enthusiastic
about sharing their Catholic Faith with the children of our parish. The materials we use provide excellent support and training
is provided through mini courses offered throughout the summer. Please consider joining us. We particularly need help for
Grade 4 on Wednesdays at 5:30PM and on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for Grades 7 and 8.
THE MULTI-SENSORY THURSDAY PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN WITH CHALLENGES is looking for
students in grade 8 and high school to serve as Student Aides on Thursday afternoons. You would assist catechists to
support the learning process, provide additional supervision, and be role models for the students. If you are looking
for a great service opportunity during the 2018-2019 school year working with children, this is the job for you! We
provide service hour documentation and letters of recommendation for college, scholarships, awards, and jobs. Cate-
chists are also needed for the Thursday Multi-Sensory Program for Children with Challenges. For more infor-
