Romania is situated in South-East Europe, between latitudes 43˚ North and 48˚ North and longitudes 20˚ East and 29˚ East, about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole. It covers an area of 237,500 sq. km. ranking twelfth in size among the countries of Europe.

The neighbouring countries are Bulgaria in the south, Serbia in the south-west, Hungary in the west, Ukraine in the north and the south-east and the Republic of Moldova in the east. In the south-east, Romania is bordered by the Black Sea for a distance of 245 km. Romania is member of NATO and the European Union .

Romania´s population is 22.7 million. The country is inhabited by Romanians (89.4%), Hungarians (7.1%), Germans (0.5%) and other nationalities (3%) and has a population density of about 96 people per sq. km.

The Romanian language is a Latin language. The grammatical structure and most of the basic word stock are of Latin origin.

Government:Bicameral parliamentary republic. Climate: Temperate continental.

Capital: Bucharest, first mentioned in 1459.

It is the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country, and lies on the banks of the Dambovita River.

According to unofficial data, the population is more than 3 million. Bucharest is the 6th largest city in the European Union by population within city limits.

The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is the world's largest civilian building (according to the World Records Academy) and it can be seen from the moon. It was designed and nearly completed by the Ceausescu regime as

the seat of political and

administrative power.

Nicolae Ceausescu

named it the House of

the Republic,

but many Romanians

still call it the

People's House.

• Bran Castle, situated near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Braşov, is a national monument and landmark in Romania.

• The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia

• Dracula is supposed to have lived here.

• Peleș Castle is a Neo-Renaissance castle in the Carpathian Mountains, in Sinaia, on an existing medieval route linking Transylvania and Wallachia, built between 1873 and 1914. Its inauguration was held in 1883.

• It was the summer residence of the former kings of Romania.

• It was the first electrified castle in Europe.
