The news is filled with BAD NEWS. On a daily basis we read of the sad state of mankind. We are getting worse and worse in America and around the world. What is happening on a massive scale is only the multiplication of what is happening on an individual basis. BAD NEWS.


Has America become numb to tragedy? Recent mass shootings have left 43 dead

and many asking why?

PITTSBURGH - Does the name Byran Uyesugi ring a bell? Odds are not. What about Robert A. Hawkins? Or Mark Barton? Terry Ratzmann? Robert Stewart?Each entered the national consciousness when he picked up a gun and ended multiple lives. Uyesugi, 1999, Hawaii office building, seven dead. Hawkins, 2007, Nebraska shopping mall, nine dead. Barton, Ratzmann and Stewart — 24 dead among them in 1999 (Atlanta brokerage offices), 2005 (Wisconsin church service) and last week (North Carolina rehab center).

Each has been largely forgotten as the parade of multiple killings in America melts into an indistinguishable blur. We bemoan, we mourn, we move on. ANALYSIS

Sun., April 5, 2009Men and women are in the clutch of a horrifying power, and that power clutches them deep inside their own being and it pulls them to self destruction. That power is SIN, and SIN makes for BAD NEWS.

FOUR MAJOR AREAS THAT SIN PRODUCES BAD NEWS FOR THE HUMAN RACE.1A self-centeredness Acquired Self-centered SyndromeAcquired Self-centered Syndrome (ASS) is not a new "disorder" it's been plaguing humanity ever since Eve bit into the forbidden fruit. Eve ate the fruit because, well, she wanted to be like God. In a "pride goeth before the fall moment" Lucifer boasted, "I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High" (Isaiah 14:14). God promptly booted him out of heaven on his hinny. Adam followed Eve's lead and ate of the forbidden fruit. They both received a rude awakening. The First Couple was driven from their garden retreat forthwith.

It’s bad news in human existence that every one of us is bent on fulfilling our own selfish desires at any rate.

Satan was the first angel who had this self-centeredness syndrome

Society has lost its moral compass and our children have paid a big price. Divorce is rampant, even in the Church. The excuse Christians give is, "God wants me to be happy." Wrong. God wants kids to be happy! He wants adults to be responsible. And in the case of Christians, His desire is for them to be obedient.We live in a world where people are demanding their rights. “What are you going to do for me now”. And if they don’t get their wish, they rebel, get angry and SIN and cause harm to anyone who is not willing to give it to them.The ultimate goal of people today is to achieve self-satisfaction. Because of this selfishness for gain, fame, dominates, popularity, money, physical fulfillment. WE SHOULD LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS INSTEAD OF USING PEOPLE AND LOVING THINGS.


So what is the result of self-centeredness?

1 Unable to sustain a meaningful relationship.

2 Unable to really love.

3 Unwilling to give. 4 Thus forfeits joy.5 Loneliness.6 Despair 7

2a guilty. On the wrong side of the law

Why do we have guilt?

Because God has designed man to feel something when he sins. Other wise man could never prevent himself from going to Hell.

Because guilt tells us we are on the wrong road, and something has to change.

The result of guilt

Anxiety, fear, sleeplessness, lives with psyological problems, ulcers, many illnesses. Which results in drunkenness, and bad behavior. People are frightened to death over guilt.

o They try to cover it with a covering of sod. Money, possession, alcohol, drugs, sex, travel, horoscope

People will blame their guilt on:

Society, some old outdated Biblical tradition being imposed upon them, on God, on Christians, on the church, on parents, on childhood days.

3a no feeling of significance. Meaninglessness

“Is this what life is all about?” Better would it be if I had never been born. Where there is no fulfillment all the basic questions are, Is this all there is? Why am I

alive? What is truth? How do I find out what is truth?

And mankind is fed a steady line of lies by the liar Satan, who runs the world’s system. And the devil’s lies never answer the question of meaning. So he never gets the answer. The news is always bad. “Life ever goes on, I just forget why.”

4a the feeling of hopelessness. Despondency & Depression occurs,

The law of diminishing returns. When all is said and done, life has no where to go. There is nothing here in this life and nothing after this life. ALL IS BAD NEWS.


Resulting in going deeper in the dilemma caused by being pushed by the lies of the devil who keeps pumping lies through the system we live.

Is there any good news anywhere? For goodness sake?

Yes? The good news about sin is that it can be dealt with.

Self-centeredness can be dealt with.

Guilt and anxiety can come to an end

Meaning of life can be dealt with.

Life after death can be good news

I submit to you today there is good news! Romans 1:1 Paul says there is good news, and that is the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, The good news of salvation, The good news of the grace of God.

Sin can be forgiven Guilt can be removed

Life will have meaning The future has a reality

WE PREACH THE GOOD NEWS, BUT THE WORLD SEES IT AS BAD NEWS.

Romans has the Good News. The entire 16 chapters are thrust in the first seven verses of chapter one.

Paul summarizes the good news and then unfolds it in the chapters remaining.

Romans 1:1 THE GOSPEL OF GOD.

Good, merry, glad, joyful, tidings that make a man’s heart rejoice, make him sing, leap for joy. Note where the good news comes from: ‘FROM GOD” that is important to say that. The good

news is not coming from Rome, from Caesar, but from God. Why should God give me good news? I don’t desire it. RIGHT.

SEVEN UNFOLDINGS OF THE GOSPEL, THE GOOD NEWS

I. THE PREACHER OF THE GOOD NEWS The question has always been asked, “How do you know you have been called by God to preach or teach. Does God set apart men, does God separate men unto the work of the Gospel?

God called a unique man to be the major spokesman of the Good news. Paul was God’s keynote speaker for the heralding of the Good news.

Paul was in training for this position before he was even saved

Saint Paul Writing His Epistles, 16th century (Blaffer Foundation Collection, Houston, Texas). Most scholars think Paul actually dictated his letters to a secretary.

And may I say, every preacher who has ever preached the gospel has depended on Paul’s sermons for his material.

Paul tells us three things about him in verse one

1. Paul 3972 a servant 1401 of Jesus Christ 5547

a servant of Jesus Christ -- The word here rendered "servant" means "bond-servant," or one subject to the will and wholly at the disposal of another. In this sense it is applied to the disciples of Christ at large (1 Corin. 7:21-23) as in the Old Testament to all the people of God ( Isa 66:14)). But as, in addition to this, the prophets and kings of Israel were officially "the servants of the Lord" ( Josh 1:1, Ps. 18:1 title), the apostles call themselves, in the same official sense, "the servants of Christ" (as here, and Php. 1:1, Jam 1:1, 2 Peter 1:1, Jude 1:1), expressing such

1401 Doulos. Slave, that is. Exodus 21:5-6, I Corin 7:21-23, 2 Corin 4:5, Gal 1:10, 3:28, Eph 6:5 Phil 1:1 Col. 3:11, 1 Tim 6:1. In subjection , bond servant.

5547"Christ" = "Christos" = our Lord's Messianic name with a view to His diety.

Christos comes from a Greek word “chrio”) meaning contact, to smear, to rub, and seems to be used in the context as of anoint with oil. Luke 4:18. Yet christos means “anoint, i.e. the Messiah” which tells us that the meaning CHRIST is an assigned usage meaning. Several other words in the N.T. also were given a spiritual christian meaning that was not the original Greek meaning. So it is not uncommon for a word to be used in a slightly new and different way to express a spiritual concept by the N.T. writers. Only twice in the N.T. is “Messias” 3323 used. John 1:41 & 4:25. Interestingly it is in John 4:25 that both messias and christos are used. There are several other Greek words translated anoint, anointing, or anointed in the N.T.

A Slave of Dignity or Humility?

The Jewish sense versus the Hebrew sense.o Yes, there is a certain incomprehensible dignity in being called a servant of Jesus Christ

And at the same time an object of slavery – a term of humility.o 1 Corinthians 3:5 Ministers as table waiters.

o 1 Corinthians 4:1 Ministers of Christ “under row.” Paul was saying he was a third-level

galley slave for Christ.o A person in a state of slavery; one whose person and liberty are subjected to the authority

of a master.

To be a preacher/teacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ is sometimes overwhelming. There is no higher calling in life than to proclaim the Word of the Pulpit and to be able to teach the Word of God under the Power of the Holy Spirit, what a high calling. There is a sense of honor and dignity in the calling. The Scripture says, “Respect them,” “Obey them.” “Submit to them.” “Set your life to follow their example.”

To be a preacher/teacher of the gospel also in a sense is the humblest kind of service. You realize you have absolutely no right to think you deserve it, because of who you are.

2. He was a preacher of the gospel

He was a called 2822 “apostle 652 ”. He didn’t decide on his own. God decided. He was not appointed by man.

o Acts 9:15, 22:14-15, 26:16-17, 1 Corin. 9:16, Gal. 1:1

When first he "saw the Lord"; the indispensable qualification for apostleship. ( Acts 9:5, 22:14, I Corin 9:1).

“Apostle” means “sent one”. Commissioned one, dispatched one, a messenger, ambassador.

One must know he has been sent and not that he is just going.

The official sense and general sense of the word. All Christians are apostles ‘sent ones, to present the gospel. There are Apostles who were specially called by God.

3 Separated 873 unto the gospel 2089 of God. Set Apart

You can not serve God unless you are separated. Separation has the idea of setting apart. Numbers 15:20, Numbers 8:11, Lev. 20:26

separated unto the -- preaching of the

Once Paul knew he was called, he knew he was disconnected from the past.

In every man there is a God shade vacuum, man’s eternal soul is so made that it knows no rest until it finds its rest in God.

It is never a question if man will to worship, it is only a question of what he will worship.

It is not a question whether a man will be religious; it’s a question of how he will define that religion.

For man’s eternal soul seeks for God, but in the bent of his perverse nature, inevitable man rejects the true God and forms gods of his own thinking.

And the worship of theses gods, there is no solutions to his sinful confusion but only an intensifying of the emptiness.

There is a basic problem, man has sinfulness. How can he escape from his condition?

There is this longing to comprehend what is outside the box, so he invents gods that he thinks are on the outside. So we have religious themes abounding. And all the religions of the world tell him he can.

“No man can go into a phone booth, take off his clothes and become superman.” By nature no man can get outside the box. But God can invade the box. God has entered in to

tell us what is out there, and tell us how too. How we can dwell out there in His presence for ever. And that is the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

MAN IS A PRISONER AND CAPTIVE

And at the end of his captivity, death, unless he escapes. The nature can not ascend to the supernatural. But the supernatural can come down to to the natural.

THAT IS THE GOOD NEWS OF ROMANS 1:1. With all the Bad News, there is Good News. God has bursted through the boxd and desires to commuicate with man.

Paul states the good news of God, then shows it’s His good news, He came in to possession of the good news by faith in Christ and that it was His Gospel to preach.

JESUS CHRIST is the good news that invaded the box to reveal God to man. He is the most incomparable personality of all human history. All people recognized Christ’s greatness. The difference for the unbeliever is that he does not surrender to Him as Lord.

"...Which He Promised Beforehand Through His Prophets in the Holy Scriptures..."

(which he had promised afore 4279 by his prophets 4396 in the holy Scriptures. 1124.

This Gospel is not something new. This message of the Gospel is not a change of God’s strategy. It was something that was promised long ago. It wasn’t a revolutionary new message. It was an Old Testament promise.


Paul was being accused of being Anti-Jewish. That he was preaching a new message. Paul is saying this is not the new good news but the old good news.

1B The gospel of God is the fulfillment of Old Testament promises. (Messianic prophecies fulfilled by Jesus Christ.)

God's purpose of salvation for men was centered around Jesus Christ. The promises which He made to Eve, Abraham and David all spoke of Jesus as their literal descendant. Indeed, the whole of the Old Testament points forward to, and prophesies about, Christ. The Law of Moses, which Israel had to obey before the time of Christ, constantly pointed forward to Jesus: "The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ" (Gal. 3:24). Thus, at the feast of Passover, a lamb in perfect condition had to be killed (Ex. 12:3-6); this represented the sacrifice of Jesus, "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29; 1 Cor. 5:7). The spotless condition which was required for all the animal sacrifices pointed forward to the perfect character of Jesus (Ex. 12:5 cp. 1 Peter 1:19).

It is not a new religion. It is the fulfillment of an old religion. The God

of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament. What he was preparing and promising then, he fulfilled in the coming of Jesus. As a matter of fact there are 330 prophecies in the OT that are fulfilled in Christ’s first coming.

The Old Testament was completed hundreds of years before Jesus Christ was born. A large number of prophecies were made in astonishing detail by many people throughout these books. In fact, fulfilled prophecy is one of the distinguishing marks of the Bible, authenticating its claim to be the inspired Word of God.

For example, the Old Testament indicated Jesus would be betrayed by someone he trusted. "Even my close friend whom I trusted, he who has shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me" (Psalm 41:9). The New Testament, which records Jesus' life and resurrection, reveals that one of the 12 people Jesus chose to be part of his inner circle betrayed him: "Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them" (Mark 14:10).

More than 300 Messianic prophecies like this were made in the Old Testament and then fulfilled through Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The chances of one person fulfilling a mere eight of these prophecies are one-in-100,000,000,000,000,000. For one person to fulfill 48 of these prophecies, the number becomes staggering – one chance in 10-to-the-157th power. Add to that the 250 other prophecies, and it becomes impossible for any other person except Jesus to ever fit that particular sequence of time and event

The Old Testament laid the foundation for the coming of the New Testament Gospel.

Not only was Paul accused, but Jesus also faced the same accusation. “He (Jesus) doesn’t do what we do, He doesn’t belong in the same establishment as we do.” He doesn’t teach what we learned.”

The Question then was: did Jesus come with a new revelation. No. Matthew 5:17. It’s your teaching that is a perversion of Scripture. Pharisee tradition, not scriptures.

The New Testament is completely consistent with the New Testament.

“So you are saying:” ”I can’t become a Christian because I am Jewish? That would be denying my heritage.” Truth is you are denying your heritage when you haven’t become a Christian.

The Jewish people of that day, lost the continuity between the Old and the New.THE MODE: Hebrews 1:1-2 By Prophets God would tell the people about the good news.

THE METHOD: I Peter 1:10-11 Moses, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Daniel, Hosea, Ezekiel. Deut. 18:15

In summary, the message of Isaiah is that salvation comes from God—not man. Jesus alone is Savior.

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Next."He committed no sin; no guile was found on his lips. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he trusted to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls ." 1 Peter 2:21-25

The lamb was the major animal of sacrifice among the Jewish people at the evening and morning sacrifice (Ex. 29:38-42; Num. 38:3-8), and specials days (Num. 28:11), the Passover (28:16-19), Pentecost (28:26f), Feast of the Trumpets (29:1, 2), the Day of Atonement (29:7, 8), and the Tabernacle (29:12-16). the sin offerings (Lev. 4:32-35). Moreover, the Pascal sacrifice is basic to the whole sacrificial system (Ex. 12:13). Thus the figures in Isaiah 53:7 and Exodus 12:13 come together in the designation of the “Lamb of God.” They compliment each other.

THE OLD TESTAMENT SPEAKS OF THE MESSIAH:

2B GOD KEEPS HIS PROMISES. Hundreds of years go by. The Jews wonder if the Messiah will ever come. They go through

horrendous suffering. Then God acts and the promise is fulfilled. This means that God can be trusted. It may look as if he has forgotten his promises. But he does not forget. So verse 2 is not only a statement about the content of the gospel, but is also a reason for believing it. If we can see that God promised Christ centuries before he came and that in many details he fulfils these promises, our faith is strengthened

Holy Scriptures: the origin of scripture is divine. Rom 7:12 2Peter 1:20-21

Notice the tremendously important implications of verse two for our doctrine of Scripture. First there is God; then there is a promise that God wills to make; then there are prophets "through" whom (note well: not by whom, but "through" whom, God himself remaining the speaker) he speaks his promise; then there are writings; and these writings are called holy. Why are they holy - set apart from all other writings and one of a kind and precious? Because it is God who speaks in them. Read the verse carefully: He [God] promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures." God promised in the Scriptures. God is speaking in the Scriptures. That is what makes them holy. This is Paul's understanding of Scripture and should be ours. If you have ever wondered why our Bibles say "Holy Bible" on the front, Romans 1:2 is the answer.

Verses 3. Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord -- the grand burden of this "Gospel of God."

made of the seed of David -- as, according to "the holy scriptures," He behooved to be. (Mt 1:1)

according to the flesh -- that is, in His human nature (compare Rom 9:5, John 1:14)); implying, of course, that He had another nature, of which the apostle immediately proceeds to speak.

Jesus: i.e. Savior Christ: i.e. Anointed One Lord: i.e. Sovereign Ruler

Our Wednesday night study on Creation has given us a little insight into this Trinity of the Godhead. We have learned that the Trinity has been since before the foundation of the Universe. God has always been as well as the Son and the Holy Spirit. For they made plans for all eternity before there was time.

Since the plan of God was from before the foundation of the world, I would say that that the Son existed at the same time. The role in which the Son played is up for discussion.

“Who was made of the seed of David.” Vs 3 The inspired Paul makes remarkable use of the Old Testament to show that the gospel was

something which David, the man who slew Goliath, knew about. In 1 Chronicles 17:26 David says the following to God: 26 And now, LORD, thou art God, and

hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

Christ did not come into existence when He was born. He always existed. In the incarnation, He simply took the role of a SON.

Jesus wasn’t created. He became, or made of the SEED of David according to the flesh. He made the transition from His superior position with GOD to the humiliation position of dwelling with sinful man as a man Himself in the ROLE of the SON Hebrews 1:5a “Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.” There was a day in which the second person of the trinity assumed the role of a Son. “I will be”, it said, There will be a day that the 1 st person of the Trinity will act as the Father, and

the 2nd person of the Trinity will be in the role of a SON. 2 Samuel 7:14b “ I will be his father, and he shall be my son “

Philippians 2 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross

Here is my understanding:

God has given us adequate revelation and we are morally bound to teach and preach what God has revealed. We need to teach the doctrine of the Trinity.

In Heaven eternal, the relationship of the Trinity was? Has the relationship with the Trinity always been the same in all eternity?

Here is what I will say now: At the incarnation, God was born man, took on the title of Christ, and took on the role or function as a http://www.slideshare.net/cewhisnant Son, in the flesh.

John 17: 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. It is very important to preserve in the translation the past tense, used in the original, otherwise it

might be thought that the work already "finished" was only what He had done before uttering that


prayer; In other words the work that God wanted to be accomplished in as Son as man, in flesh was finished.

John 1:1,14 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

“In fact, many aspects of these truths may remain forever inscrutable, but this basic understanding of the eternal relationships within the Trinity nonetheless represents the best consensus of Christian understanding over many centuries of Church history. I therefore affirm the doctrine of Christ's eternal sonship while acknowledging it as a mystery into which we should not expect to pry too deeply.”

The Old Testament picture of the lineage from David to Christ is by no means complete. This deficiency is more than met by the New Testament genealogies. Of particular interest are the dual lines of Joseph and Mary which connect with David. The genealogies are best explained by referring the genealogy of Matthew to Joseph and the genealogy of Luke to Mary. Thus interpreted, Joseph is seen to descend from David through Solomon and the line of the kings of Judah. Mary is found in the line from David through David’s son Nathan. This detail is a striking fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. To David God had promised both the continuance of his seed and his throne forever (2 Sam 7:12-16).

To Solomon, David’s son, God promised that his throne and kingdom would continue forever, but the record is silent in the prediction concerning Solomon’s seed. This is given further light in the apostasy of the kings of Judah. Jehoiakim, king of Judah, is solemnly cursed because of his sin and the Scriptures declare: “He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity…” (Jer 36:30-31). Coniah, his son (also known as Jehoiachin and Jeconiah), was carried off captive when Jerusalem fell and the line of the kings of Judah ends in him (cf. Jer 22:30).

The problem is immediately apparent: How can God fulfill His promise to Davild if this line is cut off? The answer is that the kingly line of the Messiah is preserved through Nathan rather than through Solomon and his descendants. Hence, in the New Testament the legal right to the throne of David is passed through Solomon and Jehoiakim to Joseph and to Joseph’s legal son Christ. The physical seed, however, is passed through Nathan and Mary to Christ. Thus the promises to both David and Solomon are literally fulfilled in and through Jesus Christ. It is at once a striking illustration of the accuracy of the prophetic Word, God anticipating the defection of the kings of Judah and their curse, and at the same time a confirmation of the virgin birth. If Jesus had been the physical son of Joseph, He would have been disqualified by the curse upon Jehoiakim.

The records of Scripture provide, then, an accurate and indisputable record of the qualifications of Christ as the inheritor of the promises to David. All conservative scholars are agreed that Christ fulfills the anticipation of these prophecies, anid even unbelieving Jews anticipate that the coming Messiah will fulfill these prophecies. The genealogies of the Jews were, of course, destroyed in the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The New Testament records are the only ones extant which provide authentic genealogies to identify the Messiah.

which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His

Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the

Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness,

And declared <3724>-- literally, "marked off," "defined," "determined," that is, "shown," or "proved." To distinguish.” “To mark out the boundary, to decree, to appoint.” LKGNT. “And (as to His divine nature) according to the Spirit of holiness was openly designated the Son of God in power (in a striking, triumphant and miraculous manner) by His resurrection from the dead, even Jesus Christ our Lord (the Messiah, the Anointed One) or “And Jesus Christ our Lord was shown to be the Son of God when God powerfully raised Him from the dead by means of the Holy Spirit. Then Wuest points out: “who was demonstrated in the sphere of power as Son of God so far as His divine essence was concerned by the resurrection of the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. “Horizon.” To mark out definitely.

to be the Son of God -- Observe how studiously the language changes here. He "was MADE [says the apostle] of the seed of David, according to the flesh" (Rom 1:3); but He was not made, He was only "declared [or proved] to BE the Son of God." So John 1:1, 14, , "In the beginning WAS the Word . . . and the Word was MADE flesh"; and Isa 9:6, "Unto us a Child is BORN, unto us a Son is GIVEN."


Thus the Sonship of Christ is in no proper sense a born relationship to the Father, as some, otherwise sound divines, conceive of it. By His birth in the flesh, that Sonship, which was essential and uncreated, merely effloresced into palpable manifestation. (See on Luke 1:35; Acts 13:32,33).

with power – <1411> dunamis. (love that word) to be able, to have power, to achieve power. It refers to intrinsic or built-in power or inherent ability. Capacity to perform. The idea of effective, productive energy. Divine energy. according to the spirit of holiness the Holy Spirit," the reader would have thought he meant "the Holy Ghost"; and it seems to have been just to avoid this misapprehension that he used the rare expression, "the spirit of holiness." (1 Peter 1:11, 2 Peter 1:21, 2 Samuel 23:2, Rev. 19:10). It was the Holy Spirit working in CHRIST Who accomplished Jesus’ resurrection and every other miracle performed by Him or associated with Him. Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.

BY THE RESURRECTION <386> FROM THE DEAD - A standing again. (Anastasis Gr.) One who has come back to life after having died. The indisputable manifestation that Jesus is the Son of God. It’s God’s “exclamation point” to the good news of resurrection life available in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. The most conclusive and irrefutable evidence of Jesus’ divine Sonship. Conquered death, a power belonging only to God Himself, the giver of life. Jesus was indeed God, the Son.

Jesus Christ our Lord (lesou Christou tou kuriou hemon) JESUS : He will save. Jehovah saves. The Lord Jesus Christ His full name. Used 61 times in the New Testament. CHRIST: to anoint, rub with oil or consecrate to an office. “The anointed.” Old Testament: Messiah or the Anointed One. LORD: <2962> might, power. Give authority, confirm. Describes one who has absolute ownership and uncontrolled power, signifies sovereign power and authority. Jesus is referred ten times as SAVIOR, and some 700 times as Lord. OUR: Your Lord? Particularly, could someone tell that the Lord Jesus Christ “owns” you by watching the way you live?

Preaching which does NOT do the following is going to be bankrupt. For anything less than an exaltation of God in His glory, or the Son of God in His mercy, or the Spirit of God in His heavenly motions–anything less is the promotion of the earthly agenda of the preacher

This Gospel of God is the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord that Paul is speaking about has seven fundamentals that are part of his statement here in Romans 1:1-7.

The Preacher is Paul. Paul is used by God as the human means to transport the Gospel. The Promise we see in the O.T. of the goodness of God. The Person who will bring salvation is


Jesus Christ the Lord. The Provision that comes with the good news is Christ’s riches. And we see the result of those who love the Son. Then the Proclamation, if you love the Son, you will tell others about the Son. And we will see three Privileges believers have as a result of the good news and the Purpose of the Good News of salvation

Romans 1:5-6

THE PRINCIPLES OF THE GOOD NEWS

THE PROVISION AND THE PROCLAMATION AND PURPOSE

Notes for Verse 5By whom -- as the ordained channel We have received grace -- the whole "grace that bringeth salvation" (Titus 2:11). and apostleship -- for the publication of that "grace," and the organization of as many as receive it into churches of visible discipleship. (We prefer taking them as two distinct things, and not, with some good interpreters, as one -- "the grace of apostleship"). for obedience to the faith -- rather, "for the obedience of faith" -- that is, in order for men's yielding themselves to the belief of God's saving message, which is the highest of all obedience. for his name -- that He might be glorified.

Notes for Verse 6Among whom are ye also -- that is, along with others; for the apostle ascribes nothing special to the Church of Rome (compare 1 Corin 14:36). the called -- (Romans 8:30). of Christ Jesus -- that is, either called "by Him" (John 5:25), or the called "belonging to Him"; "Christ's called ones." Perhaps this latter sense is best supported, but one hardly knows which to prefer.


THE PROVISION OF THE GOOD NEWS

What is it that the good news gives us?

1A First: GRACE which is CONVERSION that is to be called.

2A Second: APOSTLESHIP which is VOCATION that is to be sent.

The good news is that salvation is by grace. 5 By whom we have received grace Romans 1:5

Ephesians 2:8-9 Romans 3:24,27-28

Salvation does not come by confirmation, communion, baptism, church membership, church attendance, trying to keep the Ten Commandments. Living good, having religious belief, or even believing in God and serving Him.

When a person places his trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, God sovereignty breathes into that person His

own divine life. Christians are alive spiritually because they have been born from above, created a difference with the very life of God Himself.

Romans 5:20-21, cf Romans 3:20.

GRACE.5485 The means whereby God will apply the Good News of salvation. God has stooped down as it were, to give man grace, even though we don’t deserve it.

The Good News of salvation brings us into a new vocation5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship.

“Apostle ” means sent one. As saved saints sent to tell others about Christ. We have the holy privilege of serving Jesus Christ. The Lord never provides conversion without commission. Ephesians 2:8-10.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL

“for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:” Romans 1:6

Someone who believes in Christ and puts their faith in Christ will be obedient to Christ. James 2:14-26, Ephesians 2:10

“the obedience to the faith.” That term is used as a synonym for salvation.

In other words true genuine salvation, the truth that you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, is that you have obedient faith. Romans 1:18.19

2B CALLED OF GOD. CALLED TO BE SAINTS. This is an effectual call to salvation.


This is not a general call to salvationo Isaiah 45:22 o Isaiah 55 o Ezekiel 33:11 o Matthew 11:28 o John 7:37 o Revelation 22:17 o Romans 10:17

Here the “called” is the effectual call to redemption. That comes by the sovereign will of God. (Ephesians 1:4.)

3B SAINTS OF GOD If you are a Christian, you are a saint. Saint: means holy one. By virtue of being beloved of God & called to salvation, believers have been set apart from

the world in obedience to God. Holy things in the Bible were set apart for God. Holy of Holies, Tithe, Priest, Israel. In the New Testament the only idea of being set apart are Christians.

o Acts 26:18 and Hebrews 2:11. From sin to God.

“GRACE TO YOU, AND PEACE”Believers are the only ones who could receive His grace and experience His peace.

THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL 5C

“For His name.” Every thing focuses on the glory of God.

The main reason you were saved was to keep you out of Hell? Secondary!To experience the love of God? Secondary!For God to lead your life? Secondary!

The main reason people are saved is the GLORY OF GOD.

His glory is the issue. 3 John 7 Philippians 2:9-11 2 Corinthians 4:15

God is glorified when: Someone believes His Gospel. When men love His Son. When men accept His diagnosis of their greatest need, which is forgiveness of sin.

THE GOSPEL COMES FROM GOD. IT IS PROMISED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. IT IS PERSONIFIED IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. IT PROVIDES GRACE AND SERVICE. IT IS


PREACHED BY THOSE WHO RECEIVE ETERNAL PRIVILEGES. AND ULTIMATELY IT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF GLORIFYING GOD.

Are you serving the Lord, and if so, what is your reason for serving Him?

2A We all have struggled from time to time with having the purest of motives. Tempted to be accepted, pressured, position, money, etc.

3A Some right motives of spiritual service. Paul would be a good example for us to learn some right perspective on true spiritual service. What was Paul’s real motive for writing the book of Romans, and even preaching?

o Romans 1:9. He cares for the people and their spiritual maturity. “Whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son.

o A heart motivated to accomplish the will of God.o In spirit, in soul, in heart, in mind was involved in the service rendered to the Lord.

Vs. 8-9First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

“I SERVE,” Translated as “Worship.” To worship the Lord is to serve the Lord.

One: a grateful spirit vs. Romans 1:8

Vs 8 “FIRST, I THANK MY GOD.” Paul always tried to see something good that he could be thankful for.Paul received as much joy from someone else’s success as he did from his own.

So what was Paul so thankful for? That God had given the Romans a testimony of faith that extended throughout the whole world.

PAUL WAS THANKFUL FOR GOD. Philippians 1:3. Paul was in tune with God’s purposes that they became the source of his thanksgiving. God’s end became Paul’s end.

Paul’s thankful heart had nothing to do with his present circumstances.

Vs 8 “I THANK MY LORD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.” 1 Timothy 2:5, John 14:6, Hebrews 4:16

Vs. 8c ‘FOR YOU ALL.” Paul was so thankful for their faith, genuineness of their salvation.What is Rivers of Joy Baptist Church famous for throughout the world? Just what kind of church do you want to attend?

1B A church known for its dome top and pipe organ?2B A church where pastor and people really believe God and take Him at His word?

Without gratitude in your heart for what He has done for you, you are serving in the flesh with improper motives.

Don’t let the devil steal your joy that Christ and the Spirit has brought you through the trials.

Two: concerned spirit vs. 9 “ “… that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers .”

Yes, Paul was thankful, grateful, but he had his apprehension as well. So he prayed. He never took for granted their spiritual lives. He never forgot their labor of love and continued to pray for them.

OH WHAT WAS PAUL’S CONCERN ABOUT IN HIS PRAYER FOR THE SAINTS?

Paul had a heart to see people grow spiritually. Spiritual growth of believers was the key to his ministry.

Examples of those who show us best how and why we engage in the service (work done for) of Jesus Christ.

FOR GOD WHOM I SERVE IN MY SPIRIT: (John 4:23,24, Acts 19:21; Php 3:3 Romans 1:9}

Serve: the term is used in reference to the worship and service of the true God. The greatest worship a believer can offer to God is devoted, pure, heart-felt ministry. Godly service calls for total, unreserved commitment. Paul served God with everything he had, beginning with his spirit that is, flowing out of a deep desire in his soul.

Service that is not shallow, not external, not formal, not legalist but deep in the heart of the soul. John 4:23, Ephesians 6:6-7. It’s a work that is done because you desire to, more than anything else. It’s the Romans 12:1-2 kind of service.

Paul didn’t serve Christ on three missionary journeys for money, rewards, fame, out of pressure or that it was just for fun.

Paul’s worship and service were inner related. His worship was an act of service, and his service was an act of worship. It was not that of a duty of drudge, going through endless trips and travel and teaching. It was service immersed in zealous, believing prayers. It was willing, devoted, tireless service, fired by a spirit that loved the Lord Jesus completely. It was a flaming passion to make known the good news about God’s Son.

The Right Motives for Service:

Paul is saying that his service to God is completely sincere and internally motivated. Though he served from a deep sense of duty (“I am debtor,” Romans 1; 12), his ministry was not just a job, not just an obligation. His heart was in it.


1A A Thankful Spirit. 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of

throughout the whole world.

Romans 1:8 First, I thank (1SPAI) my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is being proclaimed (3SPPI) throughout the whole world. (NASB:

Paul is saying I love this work. Paul’s thankfulness was in the gratefulness that he could serve the Lord. A thankful spirit even when things were not going so well in Ephesus, or Philippi, or Corinth.

2A A Concerned Spirit.9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without

ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

Romans 1:9 For God, Whom I serve (1SPAI) in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is

my witness as to how unceasingly I make mention (1SPMI) of you,

Paul must have had a long "prayer list" for it seems he is always mentioning someone he is praying for in one of his epistles. Could there be any relation between his unceasing prayer and his incredible power in ministry?

3A A willing of God in His Spirit . 10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have

a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

4A An obedient or submissive spirit. Vs 10b

By the Will of God (2307) means what one wishes or has determined shall be done or that which is desired or wished for. It refers to a desire which proceeds from one’s heart or emotions. This term expresses the result of one’s purpose or desire.

Paul prayed himself right into it. He prayed for the Romans and Paul said, I would like to be used in the answer to my prayer. God made Paul the tool for the answer to his prayer.

Paul was regulated by a commitment to the will of God. James 4:13-15 God is to be involved in everything we do. There is a limited factor in Paul’s decision. God’s will. Which says Paul had a high level of

confidence of knowing that God has the best plan for his life.

5A A loving spirit. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established

Paul could not wait to come to Rome; he agonized over the spiritual condition. Paul wanted to give them something of spiritual value. He wanted to share himself with them that which was spiritual “grace”. John 7:38-39. As a gracious gift from God to Paul, by the operation of the Spirit of God upon his spirit, he wanted to give to them that which God had given him.

Paul’s desire was to share, not the physical but to impact them spiritually. Ephesians 4:12

Paul endeavored to impart depth into their lives and it’s a difficult task. Romans 1-11. Comforted together - encouraged together with: from sun = together, speaks of an intimate association + to encourage and strengthen by consolation, to comfort, to strengthen) means to call upon or invite or exhort at the same time or together. To be encouraged at the same time with someone else.

o Each member of the church body should have some measure of spiritual knowledge to share with one another.

o Let’s learn together I Peter 5:2-6 o Pride will keep you from really seeking to learn from others. Humbleness is you can

allow someone else to feel important enough to talk to you about what you know more. It’s the attitude “I appreciate you talking to me.” I have received a great deal from talking to you.

o "be encouraged together with" means...“My being comforted in you together with you,” a mutual blessing to each party (you and me).

By the mutual … There is an overwhelming comfort in knowing that we can mutually share together in this ministry. This mutuality is always one of the grand underlying motivations for ministry. When you experience it, you long for more. Paul could not get enough! (Romans 15:32)

o Although Paul was a highly-gifted and greatly-used apostle, having received revealed truth directly from God, Paul never thought that he was above being spiritually edified by other believers. The truly thankful, concerned, willing, submissive, and loving spirit is also a humble spirit. The person with such a spirit never has a feeling of spiritual superiority and never lords it over those he serves in Christ’s name.

1B THE PURPOSE OF MINISTRY:

Fruit (2590) is the product or outcome of something as in a physical sense in which a tree bears literal fruit. In a figurative sense it is the result of procreation and thus the fruit of the womb. Also in a figurative sense, it describes the result of one's words or actions and would be reflected in the consequences.

1D The reason for preaching, teaching, music, singing, ministry is for spiritual fruit, results. It’s not the money, or acceptance, or even prestige.

2D Charles E. Whisnant is not contented to simply be taken care of or appreciated or with just maintenance of the people who are in Rivers of Joy Baptist Church.

revelation (Romans 1:19-21, 28), but did not know the purpose of His kindness. Why are people ignorant of God’s intention to be kind?

2D IGNORANT as a means of calling attention to something of great importance he was about to say. Paul didn’t come with the idea of taking photos with the people.

He used it to introduce his teaching about such things as the mystery of God’s calling Gentiles to salvation (Rom.11:25), spiritual gifts (1 Corin 12:1 ), and the second coming (1 Thess 4:13). Here he uses it to introduce his determined plan to visit the saints at Rome.

What was the name that is above every name? Hebrews 1:4 says it’s a name more excellent than the angels have. It’s a name that goes beyond merely distinguishing one person from another.

This name will describe Christ’s nature. One that would set Christ above and beyond comparison.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed) of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first & also to the Greek.

There is a shocking lack of confidence in the Gospel of Jesus Christ today. We don’t have to be “ashamed” of the Gospel. We don’t need to be doubtful as to whether it is indeed the “power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” We really don’t need to supplement or replace it. Nor do we need to doubt the Gospel and therefore expect no conversions. God is still working. God can and does inflame the hearts of people. God will put a growing desire to exalt the name of Jesus Christ and to live lives of holiness.

FIRST: PAUL WAS NOT ASHAMED.

Paul was not afraid, he didn’t feel shame, he was not reluctant to say that the Gospel would save. He was not afraid of humiliation, he did not experience a lack of courage to stand up and teach the Word of God. He did not feel shame because of what has been done, for he knew the power of the Gospel.

Paul was not ashamed even though he had been imprisoned, chased out, smuggled out, laughed at, considered a fool and declared a blasphemer and a lawbreaker.

WE DO NOT NEED TO BE AFRAID OF THE MESSAGE OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST FOR SALVATION.

SECOND: PAUL PREACHED THE GOSPEL:

“Have you any good news for me today?” would have been a common question. Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 summarized for us his definition of the gospel.


Paul considered himself first as a servant of Christ with his call to proclaim the Gospel: 1 Corinthians 1:17-25.

THE GOOD NEWS THAT IS THE GOSPEL:

William Tyndale (1494-1536)

“Euaggelion (which we call the gospel) is a Greek word , and signifies good, merry, glad, and joyful things, that make a man’s heart glad, and makes him sing, dance, and leap for joy.”

Alexander Maclaren describes the gospel:

“The Gospel of Jesus Christ presents itself not as merely a new stimulus and motive to do what is right, but as an actual communication to men of a new power to work in them. It is a new gift of a life which will unfold itself after its own nature.”

FOR IT IS THE POWER OF GOD: Romans 1:16

The Gospel is not advice to people, suggesting that they lift themselves. It is power. It lifts them up. Paul does not say that the gospel brings power, but that it is (present tense = continually) power, and God’s (omnipotent) power at that.

POWER 1411 “BEING ABLE.” “CAPACITY”. Used 121 times.

Root word which we get our word “dynamic”. Energetic, functioning, live, operative, working. This describes that which is marked by usually continuous and productive activity or change.

The word dynamic is characterized by energy or forces that produce motion, as opposed to that which is static.

Dunamis does not refer to explosive power, as if the gospel will blow men to bits but it refers to intrinsic i.e. built in power. Jeremiah 23:29.

The gospel is dynamic. God is dynamic, and so is powerful and able to effect radical regeneration of spiritually dead men and women. The gospel makes Dunamis power available to all believers.

I Corinthians 4:20. The kingdom of God does not consist in words but in power. It was not Greek Logic, not Roman Law, not Hebrew Thought, but the Gospel of God.

Augustine said:

That every individual is created with a spiritual “God shaped vacuum” and it will be filled by something, either divine spiritual truth or demonic spiritual lies. Everyone has an innate desire to be changed especially in a way that will make them feel less guilty and more content. They seek to fill this need by immersing themselves in a variety of programs, philosophies, and religions that promise to meet their felt need.


Sadly, all these “methods” may seemingly succeed in making people feel better about themselves, but they have no ability to liberate them from their enslavement to the power of SIN which stimulates sinful behavior and the resultant feeling of guilt and discontent (ultimately an uneasiness that they are not “right” with God, because they’re NOT.

So, let me ask you, have you experienced this wonderful working power of God in your life? Have you been freed from the guilt of sin? Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing from sin?

Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."

17For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, ‘The just shall live by faith.’"For the gospel reveals how God puts people right with himself: it is through faith from beginning to end. As the Scripture says, 'The person who is put right with God through faith shall live.'"

Verse 17 provides us with yet another reason for Paul’s eagerness to preach the gospel: the gospel is not only that through which God works so as to save men; the gospel is that through which God’s righteousness is revealed to men. The gospel reveals not only God’s power to save, but His righteousness in saving men. As Romans 1:18-3:20 will show, God is shown to be righteous in His condemnation of all men as sinners. As Romans 3:21-26 indicates, God is likewise shown to be righteous in the way He has provided a righteousness for men, a righteousness that is obtained not by works but by faith.The gospel, then, is the ultimate expression of God's commitment and power to reclaim the world. What happened in the Fall of Genesis, and Satan believes he had won over humanity through Adam and Eve. God in Genesis 3:15 states that He would bring defeat to Satan’s idea, and bring about redemption to the human race through Jesus Christ who is the Gospel. Which was our lesson Wednesday night.FOR [because] IN IT

The question is "In what?" and the obvious answer is the gospel.

In short, the righteousness of God is all that God is, all that He commands, all that He demands, all that He approves and all that He provides (through the gospel).

A major theme of the book, appearing over 30 times in one form or another, righteousness is the state or condition of perfectly conforming to God’s perfect law and holy character.

The only people who think they are good enough to go to heaven are the people who don't know how bad they really are! Righteousness is what we need but do not have. Therefore


God, knowing that we could never be righteous on our own, has provided a righteousness which comes down to us from heaven above. It's not earned or deserved, but is given to us by God as a free gift."

"The gospel makes known a righteousness. (Paul's desire was that he might "be found in Him [Christ], not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith," Php 3:9)

"The righteousness for which we are justified is neither anything done by us or wrought in us, but something done for us and imputed to us.

The righteousness by which, for the sake of Jesus Christ, God made sinners righteous (that is, active righteousness) through the forgiveness of sins in justification."

IS REVEALED:

More literally "is being (continually) revealed”. Means literally to remove the veil or covering exposing to open view what was before hidden. Rom. 8:18; 1 Co. 2:10; 3:13; 14:30; Gal. 1:16; 3:23; Eph. 3:5 Phil. 3:15; 2 Thess. 2:3, 6, 8; 1

Pet. 1:5, 12; 5:1 This righteousness made available through the gospel is hidden from every natural (in Adam)

man, including the wisest and most prudent, and is even hidden from God's elect until conversion at which time it is revealed.

That is fully known, disclosed, exposed to open view though previously hidden.

FAITH

Is one and the same with trust or belief and is the conviction of the truth of anything, but in Scripture usually speaks of belief respecting man's relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervor born of faith and joined with it

Saving faith is trust in Jesus Christ as a living person for forgiveness of sins and for eternal life with God.

"To believe through" (dia) indicates the way by which a person comes to faith (John 1:7; 1 Peter 1:21).

"Faith in" indicates the realm in which faith operates (Ephesians 1:15; Colossians 1:14; 2 Timothy 3:15.)

"Faith, for John, is an activity which takes men right out of themselves and makes them one with Christ" indicating that NT faith is not just intellectual assent but includes a "moral element of personal trust.")

The object of faith is Jesus. o Why? The reason is clearly expressed by Jesus himself: "I am the way and the truth and

the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). God the Father has revealed himself in the Son. The Father has set Jesus before us as the one to whom we must entrust ourselves for salvation. It is Jesus who is the focus of Christian faith.

Faith is relying on what God has done rather than on one's own efforts.


From faith to faith

This new life in Christ begins out of faith and is lived out daily by faith (sanctification as described in Romans 6-8) and that faith holds on firm to the end when faith becomes sight being consummated in glory in the glorious presence of God. Faith then is pictured as one's all in all, both in the beginning and in the progress of one's Christian life.

As

Meaning “just as,” and the use here emphasizes sameness and the formula “it is written” reminds the reader that Paul is quoting authoritative Scripture.

Written (1125)

Primarily means to scratch on or engrave as on an ornament, reports, letters, etc; English = graph, graphic,

Means to engrave or inscribe with a pen or stylus characters or letters on a surface which can be wood, wax, metal, leather, stone, parchment, dirt, paper, etc.)

The verb is perfect tense signifying that God's Word has been written down at a point of time in the past (cf Lev 11:44, 19:2, 20:7 were originally inscribed with a stylus by Moses probably on clay tablets under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit circa 1500BC) and remains on record as the eternal, unchanging Word of God.

This sobering thought should motivate us to obey this injunction.

Where is it written? The Old Testament, Habakkuk 2:4. “But the righteous will live by his faith.”So what is Paul's point?

The news he is explaining in Romans is not new news but good news "promised beforehand through the prophets" (Romans 1:2).

The gospel is not a "novel upstart" doctrine. In a sense the righteousness from faith to faith could be from Old Testament faith in a Messiah Who was promised to come to New Testament faith in a Christ already come

In Romans 1, Paul introduces the theme of righteousness, on which the entire book focuses.

The gospel is about a righteousness that comes from God and is appropriated "by faith from first to last" (Romans 1:17).

The NT shifts emphasis from a righteousness linked with human behavior to a righteousness that God provides in Christ.

The NT explains the truth first clearly seen in Genesis 15:6 that "Abraham believed God and He reckoned it to him as righteousness." God's righteousness was placed on the account of those who had faith.

But the Righteous man

Defines that which is in accordance with high standards of correctness. It is that which is in right relation to another and so in reference to persons defines the one who is morally and ethically righteous, upright or just.


In the NT it denotes righteous, a state of being right, or right conduct, judged whether by the Divine standard, or according to human standards, of what is right.

Said of God, it designates the perfect agreement between His nature and His acts (in which He is the standard for all men)

The one who practices (present tense = habitually, as a lifestyle, speaking of direction not perfection) righteousness is righteous (dikaios), just as He (Jesus, the perfectly Righteous One Jeremiah 23:5-6, and Jeremiah 33:16) is righteous

The one who habitually (not perfectly - think "direction not perfection") does what is right is righteous

Righteous character expresses itself in righteous conduct. True belief breeds godly behavior. If a man knows God, he will obey God, not perfectly but as the general "tenor" of his life. A man cannot claim genuine salvation if he is habitually living in sin. You will know them by their fruits (Matthew 7:16). An individual’s conduct is certain evidence of his or her nature. The one who practices

righteousness does so because he or she has been granted the righteousness of God and has the indwelling power to live righteously.

Shall live (2198) in this context means “shall be saved”. It is consistent with the salvation mentioned in the previous verse. Remember that salvation past (justification), present (sanctification) and future

(glorification) are all the result of faith. Salvation results in life that can be lived as God meant it to be lived -- lived to the full, lived

for His glory, lived in light of eternity. And it is the Gospel which opens the door to real life, yea, even abundant life John 10:10, Matt 4:4, 2 Corin 5:5, 13:4, Gal 2:19-20, 3:11-12, 5:25, Phil 1:21, 1 Thess 3:8

5:10, 2 Timothy 3:12, Titus 2:12, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 John 4:9

BY FAITH

Paul intends to prove that it has always been God’s way to justify sinners by grace on the basis of faith alone. There is emphasis here on the continuity of faith. It is not a one-time act, but a way of life. The true believer made righteous will live in faith all his life. This expression emphasizes that true faith is not a single event, but a way of life—it endures. Theologians have called this “the perseverance of the saints”, not that their perseverance saves them but that it proves or shows them to be saved.

So have you prepared yourself to listen to this message? Will you take the responsibility this day and this week, to study this message? Don’t let Satan blow out the light you have received today.

That which may be intuitively known about God has been placed in the minds (heart, conscience) of all men by God and thus no man can claim ignorance of God, and no person can claim that God’s wrath against him is unjust. Every person is accountable for the revelation of God that may lead one to salvation

The cosmos itself is a witness, David testifying that The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge. (Psalm 19:1-2).

Similarly Luke records that...in the generations gone by (God) permitted all the nations to go their own ways and yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness." Acts 14:16-17

In Isaiah God tells men to...Lift up your eyes on high and see Who has created these stars. The One Who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power not one of them is missing. (Isaiah 40:26)

Jeremiah records some "evidences" of God writing that... Jeremiah 10:10-13

FOR GOD MADE IT EVIDENT TO THEM:


Noah’s father, Lamech, was for over fifty years a contemporary of Adam. Knowledge of God was held and imparted by tradition from the beginning. The fact that the “world that then was” became so corrupt as to necessitate destruction (Hebrew, “blotting out,” Ge 6:7, margin), only supports the awful account. Not only was the world bad unto judgment at the time of the Flood; but the world after Noah became such that God called out His own (from Abraham on) to a separate, pilgrim life (Ge 12:1, Acts 7:2, 3, 4, Heb 11:8, 9, 10). Sodom, and later the Canaanites, again filled up iniquity’s measure (Ge 15:16, Mt 23:32, 33) and were “sent away from off the face of the earth” (Jer 28:16). Utter uncompromising, abandonment of hope in man is the first preliminary to understanding or preaching the gospel. Man says, “I am not so bad; I can make amends”; “There are many people worse than I am”; “I might be better, but I might be worse.” But God’s indictment is sweeping: it reaches all. “None righteous (Ro 3:9, 10, 23); all have sinned; there is no distinction.” And the first step of wisdom is to listen to the worst God says about us, for He (wonderful to say!) is the Lover of man, sinner though man be. You and I were born in this lost race, with all these evil things innate in, and, apart from the grace of God, possible to us. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and is desperately wicked.” (Jer 17:9,10) Only redemption by the blood of Christ (Ps 34:22, 44:26, 49:7, 49:15, 55:18, 69:18, 103:4, 107:2, 119:154, Is 41:14, 47:4, 62:12, Jer 50:34, Ga 3:13, Titus 2:14, 1Pe 1:18, 19), and regeneration by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5, John 3:3), can afford hope (1Ti 1:1, Titus 2:13). — Romans Verse-by-Verse

Ray Stedman aptly remarks that...There is no such thing as an atheist. Even the Communists -- who are making the biggest possible demonstration of pretending that there is no God -- continually reveal, in little things they say, that they too recognize God. When Khrushchev was over here, he used the name "God" on frequent occasions; and even Stalin one time, when news came to him of a battle that was won, cried, "Thank God!" As G. K. Chesterton points out, it is impossible to swear properly without reference to God. Imagine ripping off a round oath in the name of natural selection, for instance. So, you see, there is a knowledge of God. And there is enough knowledge of God in the conscience of man, and in nature around, to induce a spirit of reverent worship if it is followed. But men refuse to recognize this knowledge, and this is the basic human sickness that grips our race. They suppress and smother the truth they know by permitting wrong actions and wrong attitudes in their lives. I shouldn't say, they, I should say, we. We do this, don't we? Even Christians do it!...the most violent rejection of God is almost always done in the name of education, of reason, or of philosophy. We try to crowd God out of our lives, though we don't actually wish to completely eliminate him. There are very few people who are willing to shake their fists into the heavens, and say: "There is no God." Or, "We don't want God!" Usually what we do is to put him way down on the list -- until after our second heart attack -- then we are ready for God! And the result of that is predictable. When man is without the restraint of love for God, or fear of God, then he goes the limit in his reactions.

Notice from the chart above that from Romans 1:18 to Romans 3:20 Paul like a prosecuting attorney presents God's indictment of the world, clearly demonstrating why men need the righteousness of God which is then mercifully presented in Romans 3:21 through Romans 5:21.

WRATH does not refer to uncontrollable anger to which men are so prone but to God's settled indignation and controlled passionate hostile feeling toward sin in all its various manifestations. Settled indignation means that God’s holiness cannot and will not coexist with sin in any form whatsoever.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” NASV

This section Romans 1:18-21 Paul is describing God’s gracious revelation and man’s greatest rebellion against the clear truth of the Creation. This is why we have spent most of 2009 on God’s Creation.

From Creation the Invisible Things of God are Clearly Seen . Romans 1:20

John 1:18 ; Colossians 1:15; 1Timothy 1:17; 6:16.

FOR : is a subordinating conjunction which introduces the explanation of how God made a knowledge of Him evident to all mankind. In virtue of this revelation, men are inexcusable, irreverent and ungrateful.

Creation: refers to bringing something into existence which has not existed before. Hebrews 11:3. God’s creative action.

In 1 Peter 2:13, God has created all the foundations of human society, work, family and the government. Now not only is God its originator, but as to its function or sphere of operation.

Ephesians 2:10 , the purpose of this new creation. We are His workmanship created for Him.

Of the world refers to an orderly arrangement and here refers to the order of the universe.

Invisible: is that which cannot be seen with physical eyes.

Are those things which are manifested by His works, and are explained by the terms “power and Godhead.”

The visible nature speaks of nature’s invisible God.o Psalms 19:1-6

o The point: anyone who ever looked into the night sky or the sunset has no excuse to not

believe in God.

Man, reasoning upon the basis of the law of cause and effect, which law requires an adequate cause for every effect, is forced to the conclusion that such a tremendous effect as the universe, demands a Being of eternal power and divine attributes.

His eternal power Romans 16:26, Genesis 21:33, Deut. 33:27, Psalms 90:2

Eternal: means everlasting, having infinite duration, lasting or enduring forever. Power: Being able, the power or ability to carry out some function. God’s Dunamis has

always existed. Godhead or divine nature: Acts 17:29; Colossians 23:9. The attributes which make

up deity, signifying the sum total of the divine attributes of God.


o Paul is declaring how much of God may be known form the revelation of Himself which

He has made in nature.o YET it is not the personal God whom any man may learn to know by these aids; He can

only be known only by the revelation of Himself in His SON, Jesus Christ. John 17:25 , John 1:18, Colossians 2:9.

o What is known is His divine attributes and His majesty and glory.

o Therefore, through the light of the created universe, unsaved man recognized the fact that

there is a Supreme Being, who created it, who has eternal power and divine attributes, a Being to whom worship and obedience is due.

o AND this is the truth which man is restrained or has withdrawn from belief.

o HEREIN lies the just condemnation of the entire race, since it has not lived up to the light

which it has. This, Paul says, renders man without excuse.

Have been clearly seen: Paul connects the observing of the mighty and beautiful things of the world with the consciousness of a personal God.

Clearly seen: literally means to look down, see from above, view from on high, o The idea is to get hold of definite information with focus upon process of perception but

associated with an intellectual apprehension. o It means to behold fully, distinctly apprehend, clearly see and discern clearly

o They are continually put on view, perceived, continuously beheld fully, distinctly

apprehended. o God has given more than just one brief glance of His glorious work.

o INVISIBLE THINGS ARE CLEARLY VISIBLE.

o Theologically this is called “natural or general revelation.”

o God’s natural revelation of Himself is not obscure or selective, observable only by a few

perceptive people who are specially gifted. In other words everyone can clearly see.o Therefore no one has an excuse to say, “I see no evidence for a Creator, for a God.

o THERE IS IT: There is the point of Paul:

It takes a deliberate act of one’s will to observe the design we see in creation and not acknowledge a Designer.

Being understood through what has been made :

Understood : the mind, reflective intelligence, the organ of mental perception and apprehension

o Clear perception, a full understanding,

o In other words, you just do not see it, you have the perception in your mind upon seeing it

that there is a Creator.o And there is this continuous avail to see and understand.

o Matthew 15:17; 16:9, 11


what has been made : means what is made and refers to the product or workmanship.o He who does the making. Eph 2:10.

o Men cannot indict God with hiding Himself from them and therefore excuse their

irreligion and their immorality.

So that they are without excuse

So that: sense is rather purpose: The revelation of God’s power and divinity is given, so that, after being made clear, they fall into sin, they may be without defense.

Without excuse that is without apology. No legal defense.

o In other words, one can not justify the circumstances that led to the reason why they

didn’t believe in a God. Men are judged and sent to hell not because they do not live up to the light evidenced in the

world but because ultimately that rejection leads them to reject Jesus Christ. In other words, again, if a person lives up to the light of the revelation he has, God will provide

for his hearing the gospel by some means or another. o Acts 8:26, Acts 10:2 , 44,48, Acts 16:14.

Romans 1:21 For even though they knew (AAPMPN) God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart was darkened (3SAPI).

The basis for God’s wrath against the Gentiles and the fact that they are without excuse is that they suppress the truth about God and have exchanged the glory of God for idols (1:18-23)

The basis for God’s wrath against the Gentiles is that although they knew God, and claimed to be wise, they neither glorified him nor gave thanks to him, but instead they became futile in their thinking, darkened in their foolish heart, and exchanged the glory of God for idolatry (1:21-23).

THEY KNEW

God has given mankind the means to know personally the existence of God and to know His divine attributes. Men have knowledge of God’s being and character. Acts 17:27.

THEY DID NOT GLORIFY HIM AS GOD

About the worst thing you can say about a man is a man who is not thankful to God. They give the glory to another, they did not praise Him, or magnify Him, they did not place

You stop giving praise to God leads to disastrous consequences. But man refuses both worship and praise.

They become worthless in their wisdom, they think about worthless things. Jeremiah 2:5 They come to the false notions, false reasoning, about God, In spite of the facts, they reject

them. Refusing to recognize God and to have His truth guide their minds, sinful men are doomed

to futile quests for wisdom through various human speculations that lead only to falsehood and therefore to still greater unbelief and wickedness. 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

Have you noted when rejecting revealed truth, they find alternative explanations? Jeremiah 2:5.

AND THEIR FOOLISH

All men are by nature undiscerning as to the things of God, and to this there was never an exception.

WHEN MEN TURN WILLFULLY FROM TRUTH, THEY WILL RUN TO THE EXTREMES OF ERROR.

The naive, false notion that those who have never explicitly heard the gospel are not under God's condemnation is corrected by this passage. That which may be intuitively known about God has been placed in the minds (heart, conscience) of all men by God and thus no man can claim ignorance of God, and no person can claim that God’s wrath against him is unjust. Romans 1:22 Professing (PAPMPN) to be wise, they became fools (3SPAPI)

Romans 1:23 and exchanged (3PAAI) the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures

PROFESSING (alleging, asserting, affirming) TO BE WISE: phaskontes (PAPMPN) einai (PAN) sophoi: (Ro 11:25; Pr 25:14; 26:12; Is 47:10; Jer 8:8,9; 10:14; Mt 6:23; 1Co 1:19, 20, 21; 3:18,19)

As you know it’s always being my goal to discover the depth of Scripture. I do get excited about what I am learning from God’s Word.

Romans is about the Good News, but for the Good News to be good, we need to know what the bad news is. And the bad news is, we are all under the wrath of God. We are all sinners and with out some good news we are all bound to go to HELL for all eternity. That is forever. So we need good news.

On the TV News they give us all the bad news without, or with little good news.

Jesus spoke more on the negative. He had more to say about judgment, destruction, damnation, Hell, than anybody recorded in scripture.

For contempt of others. For unwillingness to forsake sin. For falsely professing to follow Christ. For assuming Jewish lineage can save. For rejecting the Messengers of Christ For failing to fear and reverence God.

From the beginning Jesus’ testimony was clear. God is a God of judgment and wrath who will punish sin.

So Paul does the same, he first warns men about the wrath of God. And Paul answers the question: “Is God fair?” Is God unloving? How? By defending God’s right to respond in judgment.

God has a right to judge: Romans 1:18-23. Paul gives FOUR REASONS FOR THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD’S JUDGMENT:

1. God has given the truth of God.2. Man is responsible for responding properly to the revelation of God:

2A REJECTION:

1. Men have rejected the revealed creation of God, and refuse to thank and glorify Him.2. Rejecting the light of God’s knowledge in their consciences, men now arrogated to themselves

wisdom, and became—what? Fools! “The fear of the Lord is the beginning”—of both knowledge and wisdom (Pr 1:7; 9:10; 15:33; Ps 111:10-; Job 28:28).

That is the characterization of the entire human race apart from regeneration. Rom 2:23

Man rationalizes his sin and proves his utter foolishness by devising and believing his own philosophies about God, the universe, and himself

· Man believes that he has the TRUTH. Man’s TRUTH.· BIBLICAL TRUTH.

Vine said of this: “Mere profession of wisdom is spiritual hallucination.

Scripture warns: Isaiah 5:20-21, Malachi 2:17 and 3:15. Judge 21:25 and Proverbs 17:15 Isaiah 47:10.

SO HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS: When men refuse to see God as God, and refuse to glorify God, they become vain laboring in their mind, and finally completely separate from truth, and thus become fools.

THEY BECOME FOOLS:3471

· Our English root word is moron. That is a very stupid person.· The term refers to the physical dullness.· Their intellectual life is devoid of meaning.· 2 Samuel 24:10, Jeremiah 10:14; Matthew 5:13; Romans 1:22

They end up rejecting the knowledge of God in their conscience, and now claim to have wisdom, resulting in foolishness. Proverbs 1:7; 9:10: 15:33, Psalms 111:10 and Job 28:28


LISTEN TO THE BIBICAL TRUTH:

· Psalms 19:1-6, Isaiah 45:5, 14, 21; 46:9. There is a Creator!

Men by the choice of their will have denied the truth about God.

· Romans 5:8, I John 3:16; 4:10 and Ephesians 5:1-2

THE GREATEST MINDS THE WORLD HAS HAD TO OFFER

· While the culture would say they are men of science and philosophy and are brilliant men. These great minds have tried to deal with “metaphysics, epistemology, empiricism, and rationalism, along with ethics or morality” and have come up short of the glory of God in their thinking.

o in a sense they have. But they have a spiritual hallucination and have this mental disorder.· They have become “very stupid”. Brilliant fools they have become.· These brilliant minds deny the God of creation. They believe they have the scientific knowledge to

explain the infinitely complex, majestic, beautiful creation without a Creator.· The fact is this: once a person rejects the truth of God in Christ, they will fall for anything foolish, and

trust far more unsubstantiated and unbelievable systems that they have rejected in God. What happens then is their mind is darkened and they become foolish in their behavior and thinking.

Let me ask, how do you arrive at your wisdom?

All wisdom which does not come from the Lord Jesus Christ is foolishness. All strength not divinely shaped in the soul is weakness. All knowledge that does not arrive from the Lord’s own teaching in the conscience is the depth of ignorance.

This is the will of God, your sanctification, holiness, I Thess. 4:3-5. We are to know God.

‘EXCHANGED” “AND CHANGED THE GLORY OF GOD.

The act of giving or taking one thing in return for another.

This act was willfully chosen to make. God did not force men into this act. It did not happen by accident but by choice.


In truth men could not actually change the glory of God into anything. His glory is immutable. But the change is in the form like Israel exchanged at Mt Horeb, they made a calf and worshiped a molten image. Psalms 106:20; Jeremiah 2:11

THE GLORY OF THE INCORRUPTIBLE GOD

That which is not subject or liable to decay and death.

Mankind is so incurably religious .

And has such if he will not worship God he will find or make something to worship. When he makes the exchange and turns away from God, he creates an “IMAGE” to worship. When man exchanges the truth about God, he begins by worshiping himself, but he doesn’t stay there. The course is always downward.

RELIGION IS REALLY JUST ANOTHER SYSTEM WORKED OUT BY MAN TO SET ASIDE THE TRUTH AND THE WORSHIP OF THE ONE GOD.

The historical development of religion is not evidence of man’s progress but of his depravity and rejection of God.

INTO AN IMAGE1504 MADE. For an image in the form of corruptible man.

A visible manifestation of an invisible and heavenly reality (Hebrews 10:1.

God said in Genesis 1:26 that man is made in the likeness of God. There is to be one image ordained by God to represent Him. To form any other image as a representation of God is a violation.

It is absolutely essential that we constantly compare our own concept of god against the reality of who god is as revealed in his word; we can also be guilty of worshipping a self-made god.

And of birds, and four-footed animals and crawling creatures

The point here is there is this downward progression of men.

By refusing to acknowledge the true, infinite and incorruptible God, he devolved to the lack of common sense and emptiness of idol worship.
