Narrator All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have

their exits and their entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts, one man in his time

plays many parts…are true.

Ladies and gentleman, where better to begin our exploration into the complete works of the

greatest of all English playwrights, then in Verona, Italy, with two of our most beloved

characters: Romeo and Juliet.

I fill in with bits of crucial narration. We begin with the problem.

[Enter chorus]

The prologue

Chorus

Two households, both alike in dignity,

in fair Verona, where we lay our scene,

from ancient grudge break to new mutiny,

where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes

A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life;

huh whose misadventured pitieous overthrows

do with their death bury their parents’ strife.

NARRATOR Act 1 Scene 1. In the street meet two men, tall and handsome. One Benvolio, the

other named Sampson. Their ancient fuelled by an ancient feud for one serves Capulet, the

other Montague.

[Enter Sampson and Benvolio]

BENVOLIO Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?

SAMPSON I do bite my thumb, sir.

BENVOLIO Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?

SAMPSON No, sir, I do do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb, sir.

BENVOLIO Do you quarrel, sir?

SAMPSON Quarrel, sir? No, sir. But if I do, sir, I am for you: I serve as good a man as you

BENVOLIO No better

SAMPSON Yes, better

BENVOLIO You lie!

[They fight]

SAMPSON Montague!

[Enter the prince]

SAMPSON Oh, Oh, it’s the prince.

PRINCE Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace. You, Capulet, shall go along with me. Benvolio,

come you this afternoon to know our farther pleasure in this case.

PRINCE Sorry!

[Exit the prince]

BENVOLIO Where is Romeo? I saw him today. Right glad I am he was not at this fray.

[Enter Romeo]


BENVOLIO Ah, but see, he comes. Why are you sad, Romeo?

ROMEO I am in love.

BENVOLIO Who do you love?

ROMEO I love sweet Rosaline but she doesn't love me. That is why I'm sad.

BENVOLIO Hey, listen! Go there is the feast of Capulet. There you will meet the fair Rosaline,

whom you love, with all the admired beauties of Verona. Go there and compare her face too,

so that I will show well. Oh baby!

ROMEO Go along. No such sight to be shown but to rejoice in splendour of my own, oh!

NARRATOR It wasn’t that good! Now, to the feast of Capulet, where Romeo is doomed to

meet his Juliet and where, in a scene of timeless romance, he’ll try to get Juliet’s love.

[Enter Romeo and Juliet]

ROMEO Oh, teacher torches to burn bright!

Did my heart love till now? For I never saw this beauty till this night.

If I profane with my unworthiest hand

This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this:

my lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand

to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

JULIET Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,

Which mannerly devotion shows in this:

for saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do touch,

and palm to palm is holy palmers’ kiss.

ROMEO O then, my dear, let lips do what hands do

JULIET Please, don’t move. I don’t want to kiss you.

JULIET You kiss by the book..Oh, coming mother


ROMEO What’s this?

JULIET The balcony scene.

O Romeo, Romeo! Why is your name Romeo? Let's change our names. Then we can love.

Forget that you're a Montague. Or, if you love me, I will not be a Capulet. Montague and

Capulet are only names. A rose can have any name. It always smells sweet.

ROMEO I will change my name for you.

JULIET Who's there?

ROMEO It's me. Romeo.

JULIET Why are you there?

ROMEO I love you. And I know that you love me.

JULIET What shall we do ? Our families are enemies .

ROMEO I can't stay far from you anymore . We must get married secretly. We will do it

tomorrow. Will you marry me?

JULIET Yes , Romeo . But will you be true?

ROMEO Yes , my darling.

NURSE Juliet ! Juliet !

JULIET I'm coming nurse. Good night.

ROMEO Good night my love.

JULIET Good night a thousand times.

ROMEO A thousand times a bad night if you are not with me.

JULIET It's very sad and very sweet to say good night. But tomorrow, we will be married. Bye

[Exit Juliet]

NARRATOR Meanwhile Juliet had a loathsome cousin, whose name is Tybalt.

[ Enter Tybalt]


TYBALT Romeo, I want to kill you, villain! You came to the feast of the Capulets.

ROMEO Tybalt, I do protest. I’ve never injured thee, but loved thee.

TYBALT Romeo, fight me!

[They fight]

TYBALT Oh, I’m killed!

[Exit Tybalt]

[Exit Romeo]

NARRATOR Moving right along. From Tybalt’s death onward. Despite the best efforts of friar

and nurse, their faith pursues them.

[Enter Juliet smiling]

JULIET Oh God, bring in cloudy night immediately. Come night, come civil night, come, come

gentle night, come loving black-browed night, oh night, night, night..come, come, come…

JULIET I didn’t write it

[ Enter the nurse, desperate]

JULIET Oh, bring my Romeo

NURSE Oh, Romeo Romeo. Tybalt is gone and Romeo banished. Romeo, who killed Tybalt, is

banished!

JULIET Oh God! Did Romeo’s hand shed Tybalt’s blood?

NURSE He did! He did!

JULIET and the nurse: Oh my God! Oh, my God! Ahhhhhhh!!!

Thank you.

[Exit the nurse]

[Enter Friar Lawrence]


FRIAR LAWRENCE Oh Juliet, I have a plan. You and Romeo will be together. Here’s a special

potion. Drink it and you’ll seem dead. Romeo will be to the tomb of the Capulets and you will

escape together.

ROMEO Oh, my love! Oh, my wife!Death has killed you but it has no power on your beauty.

Quiet, are yet so fair?

JULIET I don’t know

ROMEO Here’s to my love. The drugs are quick. Thus, with a kiss I die.

ROMEO Thus, with a kiss. Get over it! With a kiss I die.

JULIET Good morning. Where is my love? Ahhh!!! What’s this poison I see. It’s finished. Then,

I’ll be brief. This is your dagger.

JULIET Let me die.

[Enter all the actors]

NARRATOR Epilogue!

A gloomy peace this morning with it brings

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head.

Go forth, to have more talk of these sad things.

Some shall be pardoned, some punished;

for never was a story of more woeeeeeeee

that this of Juliet and her Romeo.

And Romeo and Juliet are dead!!!

NARRATORE Tutto il mondo è un palcoscenico, e tutti gli uomini e le donne solamente attori. Hanno le loro uscite e le loro entrate, un uomo nella sua vita, svolge molte parti. Un uomo nella sua vita, svolge molte parti.

È vero.

Signore e signori, qual modo migliore per iniziare la nostra esplorazione all’interno delle opere del più grande commediografo inglese, se non a Verona, in Italia, con due dei più amati personaggi: Romeo e Giuletta.

Raccontiamo le parti più cruciali della narrazione. Iniziamo dal problema.

[Entra il coro]

PROLOGO

CORO

Due grandi case, pari in dignità,

da faida antica mosse a guerra

nella bella Verona dove è posta la nostra scena,

tornano a macchiare mani civili con sangue civile.

Dai fatali lombi dei due nemici

nasce una coppia di infelici amanti

predestinati da sinistra stella

a seppellire con la propria morte l’odio dei padri.

Grazie mille.

NARRATORE Atto 1 scena 1. Nelle strade di Verona, due uomini si incontrano. Sono alti e di bell’aspetto. Il primo si chiama Benvolio e l’altro Sampson. Riprende la loro antica faida alimentata da un servo dei Capuleti ed uno dei Montecchi.

[Escono]

[Entrano Sampson e Benvolio]


BENVOLIO Vi mordete il pollice per me, signore?1

SAMPSON Mi mordo il pollice, signore!

BENVOLIO Vi mordete il pollice per me, signore?

SAMPSON No, signore, non mi mordo il pollice per voi, signore, ma mi mordo il pollice, signore.

BENVOLIO Volete attaccar briga, signore?

SAMPSON Attaccar briga, signore? No, signore. Ma se lo facessi, signore, sfiderei voi. Servo un uomo che vale quanto il vostro.

BENVOLIO Non migliore.

SAMPSON Si, migliore.

BENVOLIO Voi mentite!

[Si sfidano. Alla fine Sampson è colpito]

BENVOLIO Montecchi!

[Entra il principe]

BENVOLIO Oh, Oh, è il principe.

PRINCIPE. Sudditi ribelli, nemici della pace.

PRINCIPE Tu, Capuleti faresti meglio ad andare d’accordo con me. Benvolio, vieni questo pomeriggio per conoscere le nostre decisioni in questo caso.

PRINCIPE Scusi!

[Esce il principe]

BENVOLIO Dov’è Romeo? L’ho visto oggi. Sono abbastanza sicuro che non era dal frate.

[Entra Romeo]

BENVOLIO Ah, guarda, arriva. Perché sei triste, Romeo?

ROMEO Sono innamorato.

BENVOLIO Di chi sei innamorato?

ROMEO Sono innamorato della dolce Rosaline ma lei non mi ama. Questo è il motivo per cui sono triste.

BENVOLIO Ehi, ascolta! I Capuleti terrano una festa. Là incontrerai la bella Rosaline, di cui sei innamorato, con tutte le ammirate bellezze di Verona. Vai e confronta la sua bellezza,

affinchè ti mostri che non è l’unica, caro mio!

ROMEO Vai avanti. Non ho niente da dimostrare, ma mi rallegro del mio splendore, oh!

[Escono]

NARRATORE Non era poi così buona.

Ora, alla festa dei Capuleti, dove Romeo è destinato ad incontrare la sua Giulietta e dove, in una scena romantica senza tempo, proverà ad ottenere l’amore di Giulietta.

[Entrano Romeo e Giulietta]

ROMEO Oh, insegna alle torce come bruciare intensamente.

Il mio cuore ha amato fin’ora? Non vidi mai tale bellezza fino a stanotte

se con indegna mano profano questa santa reliquia.

Le mie labbra, come due pellegrini rossi dalla vergogna,

Sono pronte ad attenuare l’asprezza del tocco con un bacio delicato.

GIULIETTA Buon pellegrino, non disprezzare la tua mano, che ha dimostrato solo devozione: i santi hanno mani che i pellegrini toccano, e palmo a palmo è il sacro bacio dei fedeli.

ROMEO Oh allora, mia cara, lascia che le labbra facciano ciò che le mani fanno.

GIULIETTA Per favore, non muoverti, non voglio baciarti.

[Giulietta colpisce Romeo]

GIULIETTA Stai seguendo il copione.. oh, sto arrivando madre.

GIULIETTA: La scena del balcone.

GIULIETTA: Oh Romeo, Romeo! Perché sei tu Romeo?

Cambia il tuo nome affinché possiamo amarci. Dimentica di essere un Montecchi. E, se mi ami, non sarò più una Capuleti. Montecchi e Capuleti sono solo nomi. Una rosa può avere qualsiasi nome. Avrà sempre un dolce profumo.

ROMEO Cambierò il mio nome per te.

GIULIETTA Chi è là?

ROMEO Sono io, Romeo.

GIULIETTA Perché sei qui?

ROMEO Ti amo. E so che anche tu mi ami.

Giulietta Cosa dovremmo fare? Le nostre famiglie sono nemiche.

ROMEO Non posso più restare lontano da te. Dobbiamo sposarci segretamente. Lo faremo domani. Mi vuoi sposare?

GIULIETTA Sì, Romeo. Ma tu sarai onesto?


BALIA Giulietta! Giulietta!

GIULIETTA Sto arrivando balia! Buona notte.

ROMEO Buona notte amore mio.

GIULIETTA Buona notte per mille volte.

ROMEO Mille volte una cattiva notte se tu non sei con me.

GIULIETTA È molto triste e molto dolce dire buona notte. Ma domani, saremo sposati. Ciao ciao!

NARRATORE Nel frattempo Giulietta ha un odioso cugino, di nome Tybalt.

TYBALT Romeo, io voglio ucciderti, canaglia! Sei venuto alla festa alla festa dei Capuleti.

ROMEO Tybalt, protesto. Non ti ho mai offeso, ma amato.

TYBALT Romeo, combatti contro di me!

TYBALT Sono morto!

[Tybalt esce]

[Romeo va dal narratore, poi esce]

NARRATORE Andando avanti...dalla morte di Tybalt in poi. Nonostante tutti gli sforzi del frate e della balia, il loro destino li perseguita.

GIULIETTA Oh Dio, porta immediadiatamente la notte nuvolosa. Vieni notte, vieni notta civile, vieni, vieni notte gentile, oh notte, notte, notte...vieni, vieni, vieni...

GIULIETTA Non l’ho scritto io.

Oh, portami il mio Romeo.

BALIA Oh, Romeo, Romeo. Tybalt è morto e Romeo è stato esiliato. Romeo, che ha ucciso Tybalt, è stato esiliato.

GIULIETTA Oh Dio! Le mani di Romeo hanno versato il sangue di Tybalt?

BALIA Lo hanno fatto! Lo hanno fatto!

GIULIETTA Oh mio Dio! oh mio Dio! Ahhhhhhhh!!!

ENTRAMBI Grazie mille.

[Esce la balia]

[Entra Fra lawrence]

FRA’ LORENZO Oh, Giulietta, ho un piano. Tu e Romeo starete insieme. Ecco qui una pozione speciale. Bevila e sembrerai morta. Romeo sarà alla tomba dei Capuleti e voi scapperete insieme.


[Giulietta beve la pozione e si accascia a terra]

[Entra Romeo]

ROMEO Oh, amor mio! Oh, moglie mia! La morte ti ha uccisa ma non ha avuto potere sulla tua bellezza.Come fai ad essere così bella!

GIULIETTA Non lo so.

ROMEO Da qui verso il mio amore. La pozione è molto veloce. Così, con un bacio io sarò morto.

Così, con un bacio. Supera la cosa! Con un bacio, sarò morto.

GIULIETTA Buongiorno. Dov'è il mio amore? Ahhh!! Che pozione è mai questa. È finita. Allora sarò breve. Questo è il tuo pugnale. Lasciatemi morire.

NARRATORE Epilogo!

Una triste pace questa mattina porta con sè

Il sole, per il dolore, non mostrerà il suo volto.

Andate avanti, per avere più racconti di queste vicende tristi.

Alcune saranno perdonate, altre punite,

poichè non cè mai stata una storia così doloroooooooooosa

che questa di Giulietta e del suo Romeo.

Tutti insieme e Romeo e Giulietta sono morti!
