    Lincolns Lesson on Leadership

From his earliest days in politics, Abraham

Lincoln had a critic who continually treated him

with contempt. An extremely rude man, Edwin

Stanton would say to newspaper reporters thatLincoln was a low cunning clown and the

original gorilla. In spite of personal and

slanderous attacks Lincoln never responded, never retaliated.

When Lincoln was elected President, he needed a

Secretary of War and selected Edwin Stanton. When his friends asked why, Lincoln replied,

Because he is the best man for the job.Years later, that fateful night came when an

    assassins bullet murdered the president.

Lincolns body was carried off to another room.

Edwin Stanton came, and looking down upon thesilent, rugged face of his dead President, said

through his tears, There lies the greatest ruler of

men the world has ever seen.

Early on in my career I realized that good

leadership would be crucial if I wanted to be asuccess. I needed to know: what makes a good

leader? So I purchased the books, listened to the

self-help tapes and tried to ask all the right

questions when in the company of successfulmanagers. I soon realized that there while there

were many factors that would contribute to good

leadershipit was the power of love and

kindness that would prove most valuable.

Todays lesson on managing and being the best

    leader possible:

Select the best person for the job.

Look past the personality conflicts. Choose to do the right thing no matter how

    you feel.

And never forget the power of kindness

will win over a stubborn heart!

Turn off your computer and disconnect

it from the Internet. If you save personal

information in your computer, make sure it

is difficult to access. Add a password toyour personal computer. You dont want a

hacker at work while you are on vacation.

Keep valuables under lock and key andwell hidden. Do not leave personal

documents in your home office or desk -

burglars know to look for them there. Put

critical documents in a lock box or safesomewhere else in the house. Keep copies

    of important documents at another

location - a relatives home, for example.Expensive jewelry should also be hidden

somewhere other than the bedroom or leftin a safe deposit box at the bank.

    Information provided by Insurance Institute

    of Michigans monthly publication.

Home Burglaries Can Spike As ResidentsGo On Vacation

While Michigan residents are getting ready to

head out for much-deserved summer vacations, burglars may be planning to ruin their fun.

There wer 71,810 burglaries in Michigan in

2010, down from 75,066 in 2009. Many of thoseoccur in the summer months, according to the

    Insurance Institute of Michigan (IIM).

Standard homeowners insurance policiesprovide coverage for theft of personal

possessions and damage to the home caused by a

break-in. If you own valuable jewelry or other

luxury goods, be sure to ask your insuranceagent or company representative whether you

should consider purchasing an endorsement toensure adequate coverage for these items. Manypolicies limit the amount of coverage for certain

items, such as jewelry, art and cash.

In addition to having the right insurancecoverage, IIM offers these preventive measures

    to keep your home safe:

Make it time consuming to break into

your home. Dead-bolt window and door

locks can slow a burglar down. You mayalso obtain a discount of 2 to 5 percent on

your insurance policy for installing thesedevices.

Make it noisy to break into your home.

Invest in a burglar alarm. The most effectivesystems ring at an outside service, which

alerts the police, fire and other emergency

services. A sophisticated alarm system could

result in insurance discounts of 15 to 20percent.

Make sure you have strong doors. Outsidedoors and frames should be made of metal or

solid hardwood and be at least 1 3/4-inchesthick. Each door must fit its frame securely.

Even the best lock will not deter a burglar if

it is installed in a weak door. Garage doorsalso need strong locks. If you have a tool

shed, keep it locked since burglars can use

the tools to break into your home.

    Happy Birthday!!
