My goals for ACM Europe are to enhance services, enlarge membership, and promote high quality publications and conferences. These are goals I have pursued in my recent membership of ACM Europe Council and which I hope to purse in the future. For over 25 years I have been active in European research and policy. I Chaired the EU Strategy Groups on Grid Computing and Software Services. I was a founding member of Euro-Par, the European conference of Parallel Computing. I have been engaged in IT professional societies for more than 30 years and am well acquainted with the challenges involved in providing quality services to ACM Europe members. I have a keen awareness of the importance of sustaining and developing a Society which is appealing to prospective members and which encourages existing members’ participation since membership involvement is a key feature of the success of the ACM Europe. I have held career positions in both Europe and the USA, giving me good insight into and understanding of international requirements in the ACM's areas of interest and of working effectively within large organisations. I will use this accumulated knowledge and experience to expand and promote ACM Europe activities.

STATEMENT

My objective in running for the ACM Europe council is to contribute to developing synergistic ties between research and innovation within the computer science domain, and also between computer science and other disciplines. I am especially interested in the development of computer science research and innovation in the interest of society. My ongoing activities in my role of scientific director of the Inria@SiliconValley International Lab are all oriented in that direction. I believe working with ACM Europe will definitely help extend the reach of those activities by in particular promoting the organization of relevant multi-disciplinary events. I also want to contribute to foster diversity and early engagement (of women and students) by offering a community of like-minded people and a network for mentoring and support. This goes along with supporting ACM-W Europe actions in particular, and promote/launch relevant actions with students to help them understand the role they can play in shaping the digital society. Finally, as a true European believer, I want to promote the presence of European Research and Innovation worldwide and especially within ACM.

I share ACM's vision for more than a decade now. I worked for many years with ACM student chapters, sponsoring two, and supporting all European chapters as a member, chair and currently vice chair of the Committee of European Chapter Leaders (CECL). If I will be elected as a member of ACM Europe Council my overall goal will be to support members and chapters of ACM in Europe and support diversity, equality and inclusion in computer science. I will have the chance to continue my effort offering more support to all European chapters, motivating and inspiring current and new chapter leaders, forging strong links with and between European chapters. At the same time, I will have the chance to amplify the impact of my efforts to support diversity in computer science, especially to support women in computing, by supporting the efforts of ACM-W Europe, and any effort regarding inclusion of minorities in CS through innovative technology enhanced education methodologies. Finally, I will support ACM activities and conferences in Europe that bring together people from academia and industry, offering opportunities for young researchers to network with computer science professionals.

I would be delighted to serve on the ACM Europe Council, building upon my experience as a computer science academic in the UK, various professional body senior volunteer roles, as well as substantial experience of science, innovation and education policy advice at ministerial and senior civil servant level (including chairing a national curriculum review). My goals are as follows:

Increase interdisciplinary research involving computer science, bridging and collaborating with other science and engineering disciplines, particularly for emerging data-driven and computationally-intensive domains.

Promote open science/research; as computer scientists, we should be better at sharing our data, software and computational artefacts, especially in the context of supporting reproducibility and software sustainability.

Continued advocacy of high-value digital skills and computer science/informatics education for all e.g. developing ACM’s involvement in the Digital Agenda for Europe initiative, as well as supporting national curriculum reform initiatives.

Rethink public engagement and (computer) science communication – how can we better engage with society to showcase the wonders, excitement and wider impact of computer science.

If elected to the ACM Europe Council, I will work to help move the ACM center of gravity towards Europe. Among the current Council goals, I am particularly interested in strengthening ACM’s role in informatics education at all levels in Europe, and in working to increase the European fraction of several key ACM parameters and indicators: number of members, especially women as well as non-researchers, e.g., data scientists and practitioners; number of chapters; number of recipients of major awards and other recognitions; and number of conferences, summer schools, and other events. I also have a keen interest in several aspects of scholarly communication and the research lifecycle. Being a national delegate at the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and a member of its Executive Board, and having coordinated several European projects that develop data infrastructures, I want to increase ACM’s role in shaping the interdisciplinary field of "data science" (which has computing as a critical foundation), and in influencing the open access policies for publications and data in the European environment, striking a balance between treating research results as social goods and maintaining the prominent role of ACM as a high quality publisher.

I am Chair of the Ph.D. program in Computer Science at University of Rome La Sapienza, where I am Full Professor, Director of the Sensor Network and Embedded Systems laboratory, Director of the Cyber Physical System lab of Sapienza center for Cyber Intelligence and Information Security. My research interests concern the design and optimization of sensing systems and Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, mobile, pervasive and ubiquitous computing, next-generation Internet. My research benefits from collaborations with experts in a wider set of computer science disciplines: applied cryptography, security, machine learning, algorithms, optimization, multimedia, robotics. I strongly believe that we can shape the future of our society by means of a multi-disciplinary approach having computer science and engineering at the very core. I have brought this vision to several strategic committees where I had the possibility to contribute increasing the number of events, outreach and success of ACM activities. As part of the ACM Europe Council, I will aim at further stimulating scientific research and education across all different fields in computer science & engineering, promoting exchange of ideas across different areas of research, favoring student involvement in ACM activities, and promoting organization of main ACM events in Europe.
