INTRODUCTION: Por Ejemplo, algunas llaves.

Like so many friends of mine, I have always wanted to speak a second language. More

than just having a few phrases of the language picked up from travels here and there, I

wanted to be able to converse.

Fate provided the opportunity and in 2004,

I packed up my bags and moved from

Nebraska to Antigua, Guatemala in Central

America. I had no idea what a challenge

language immersion would be. I was

humbled. I had no idea how difficult it

would be to take on the language and get

to that point where you speak without

translating in your own mind. It is a task

not meant for the weak of heart but it is

possible. I have never had so much fun.

I met some wonderful people in the

process and what has kept me learning and growing is the lure of their lives expressed in

the language. Learning a language opens the door to a whole new way of looking at the

world and expressing ideas between persons and things. That is what has kept me

studying through the years ever since.

The people I met along the way were so patient and kind and encouraged me along every

step. The folks in Guatemala were always quick with a smile and an encouraging word.

As in English, it is one thing to say, I like to learn (Me gusta aprender) and quite another

to say I would like to learn (Me gustaria aprender). It is these kinds of nuances that

challenge one in language study if you want to go beyond just getting around.

People never gave up on me. They always said things like, “Poco a poco es lejos” (Little

by little is far). Teachers in Antigua sat with me patiently and helped me make

connections piece by piece. But it was my professor, Pedro Orellana who gave me keys.

Those keys can be found in this book. He helped me unlock the door to the future, the

conditioned and the beautiful ways of expressing what might be or expressions of

emotion as they are expressed in the subjunctive form found in the Spanish language.

If you want to go into a great and enjoyable journey and meet some very interesting

people, here’s a place. The world of Spanish is a big one and you need some help to find

the keys to enter. This is a resource that contains some keys. I wrote it thinking of you.

I was writing for people like you who were courageously going to make this journey too.

You can see my growth as you journey through the verbs of this book. The vocabulary

increases and the sentences grow in complexity. But I started writing it early in my study

because I wanted this to be a book by someone who has made the journey and was given

the keys. I am still making it and I want your company. I would love to give you some

keys that will help you open the doors to the Spanish language, por ejemplo…

In this sample, you can test out the hyperlinks for the “index” and the verbs

“ayudar” and “hablar”. You’ll be able to experience the ease with which

you will be able to navigate this resource. In the book, each verb listed in

the index is hyperlinked to its sentences, providing quick and easy ability to

move around within the work itself.

This sample provides:

! the introduction

! the list of 101 verbs

! and a complete presentation of how the various verb forms are used in

sentences for two of the verbs, ayudar and hablar.

Thank you!
