2 Appliance DesignGreat Lakes brings over 35 years of appliance design and fabrication experience to every case you entrust to us. This experience allows us to follow yourdesign specifications precisely or, at your request, to draw on that experience to discuss all the design options available to you. What follows is a briefoverview of the most common components of Removable appliances. Components can be referred to by several different names, but by using theseterms, you can ensure clear communications of the design you intended.
Clasps
Springs
Arrow (Eye)ClaspThe arrow clasp is ahighly stable inter-proximal clasp. Oneof the most commonlyused clasps, it is simple to adjust.
Ball ClaspMost retentive whenused on deciduousteeth. Provides firmgrip, when a sufficientundercut is created bytwo adjacent teeth.
Delta ClaspSimilar to the adamsclasp, the highlyretentive delta claspuses single helixes atthe mesio-buccal anddisto-buccal lineangles of the molars.Commonly used with the Twin Block appliance.
Occlusal RestUsed for providingposterior stability, occlusal rests preventthe appliance fromimpinging on the gin-giva. Also used to pre-vent eruption of selected teeth when utilizingposterior bite plates.
Finger ClaspThe small size of thefinger clasp providesexcellent retention ondeciduous teeth. Itlocks into the mesialor distal buccal undercut and is simple to adjust.
Circumferential “C” Clasp“C” clasps are often used in lieu of adams clasps when occlusal interfer-ence is a concern. As with the adams clasp, the tooth must be eruptedenough to expose buccal undercuts. Also commonly requested soldered to a labial bow, again providing retention with no occlusal interference.
Elastic HookHooks can be addedto removable, bonded, or metalappliances to providefor attachment of elastics for a variety oftreatment objectives.
Adams ClaspThe adams clasp provides optimalretention when buccal undercuts areevident.
Molar RetractorSpringThis coil spring is most commonly used to distalize molars. It can be used inreverse to move teethmesially when needed.
Finger SpringThis very versatilespring can be used for distal/mesialmovement of anterior teeth.
“S” SpringUsed to labialize orcorrect rotation of teeth.
MousetrapSpringUsed to flare or alignincisors and round theanterior segment arch.A labial bow should beused in conjunctionwith this spring.
Spring withHelixesUsed for greater distance in toothmovement whileapplying a gentlerforce.
CrossoverSpringsThese lingually placedsprings are used toflare the incisors andround out the anteriorportion of the dentalarch.

Heavy duty, rugged construction providesultimate protection for your patients active in sports.
Great Lakes’ unique Biostar® fabricationprocess provides you with a seamless designand consistent thickness for a smooth andcomfortable fit. This positive pressure forming process assures a tight fit to thedentition and allows your patient to communicate easily without removing themouthguard.
The superior fit also means the mouthguardis more comfortable to wear, because itdoes not require as much musculature tohold it in place. It is far less likely tobecome dislodged during contact sportsthan a loose fitting appliance.
