JTP Urbanism & Architecture2014

A new eco-district integrating placemaking principles with bioclimatic design. The brief was to develop the first phase of the new Suzhou Eco town with a focus on producing an integrated masterplan for a mixed use new settlement.

Tangzhen New City Quarter, Shanghai

SPARK Architects, Shanghai2014

Yango Group approached SPARK to redesign a retail, commercial, office & residential development in Pudong with a partially built basement from a previous non SPARK design proposal & an operational subway station in the centre of the site. The site is estimated to be worth 1.2 billion yuan.

In my role as project I was responsible for coordinating a team of architects & liasing with the client & local design institute. My focus was the coordination of our proposal with the with the existing structure & subway line.

The concrete frame for phase 1 & 2 is due for completion in Nov 2014.

Self Contained Integrated Township and SEZVallancheri, Chennai, India

RMJM Asia2007

A pristine site next to Vallanchery Lake approximately 35km from Chennai City is to be developed as an international level mixed-use integrated township. The brief calls for the masterplanning of a 75-acre site, which will be split into 4 zones; an IT specific Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a residential township and commercial development consisting of a Shopping Mall, Hotel and Serviced Apartments and finally, a school.

I worked in a small team of architects & landscape architects on the masterplanning of the site, planning of the buildings & preparation of design material that was presented to the client.

Self Contained Integrated Township and SEZ at Vallancheri, Chennai,India

Arun Excello Infrastructure in a joint ven-ture with Larsen & Toubro have obtained a pristine site next to Vallanchery Lake ap-proximately 35km from Chennai City to develop an international level mixed-use integrated township. The brief calls for the masterplanning of a 75-acre site, which will be split into 4 zones;-IT specific Special Economic Zone pro-posed in 27 acres.

-Residential Township proposed in 40 acres comprising high-rise, group housing unit types.

-Commercial development proposed in 8 acres consisting of a Shopping Mall, Hotel and Serviced Apartments.

-School.

The site is accessed by National Highway 45 and is located adjacent to the SRM Uni-versity Campus. The proposal focuses on creating an iconic urban development which maximizes the site’s development potential, respects and integrates nature and serves as a catalyst for vitalizing the Vallanchery district of Chennai.

The scope of services for the first stage was highlighted as ‘normal master planning’, ar-chitecture landscape and restricted interior design. Initial master planning stage of the 75-acre site is to run over a 6 week period. As stated in the previous quarterly record; major ammendments had to be made to previous work produced due to land owner-ship issues.

We were charged with;

-preparing a precedent study and assist in brief formulation.

-Master planning services for the entire site.

-Liase with local architect to incorporate all relevant statutory and infrastructure re-quirements.

-Incorporate all third party and client com-ments.

-Prepare MLP in compliance with Develop-ment Control Rules.

-Receive Client’s approval.

The deliverables for the each stage are highlighted in the contract. For the Master planning Design Stage we were to provide a minimum of 3 options to be developed during a process that is refined down to one for completion of stage.

The list is as follows;Master plan of the overall site @ 1:500 scale indicating:

-Pedestrian circulation-Vehicular circulation-Entry and egress-Emergency vehicle access-Handicapped access-Recreational access-Exterior landscape concept-Phasing-Detailed land use brief-Compliance statement with respect to ap-plicable development control rules and ur-ban design guidelines. (This is to be done in association with a lo-cally employed architectural consultant).-Site sections-Massing model

Proposed Traffic Consultancy (limited scope) and Proposed Landscape Consultancy Ser-vices were also a part of the contract.

Working with traffic engineers we were able to do preliminary brain storming/ briefing during which the engineer was able to offer advice to us on our conceptual MLP propos-als. Reviews had to be made of proposed ac-cesses onto surrounding roads, conceptual plans for internal traffic circulation; parking strategy and numbers; identification of key issues/constraints. Working closely with us, the traffic engineers helped design layouts and sizing of internal roads etc.
