Setting the Scene

Drinking alcohol part of every day life for most adults in Scotland.

More alcohol is now consumed at home meaning than ever before meaning that more children are exposed to parental drinking.

Our society makes strong links between alcohol and parenting.

In 2009 the Rory first resource pack was launched. The new pack included:

• Rory books

• Rory puppet

• Games pack

• MP4 Player

• Worksheets.

Aimed specifically for use by practitioners who worked directly with children and families affected by harmful parental drinking the pack is now widely used across Scotland.

Moving to education

In 2010 the Rory first resource pack s were introduced to schools.

Teachers attended a short 2 hour training session that gave them some ideas on how the resource pack could be used.

Positives • Rory was viewed as fun by children. They enjoyed the film and

games in the pack.

• There was a strong identification with the Rory character.

• There was some evidence that parents knew about Rory.

Negatives • Local authorities were scared of what Rory would raise.

• Teachers lacked confidence to use the pack and were afraid of

scaring children and demonising alcohol and parents.

• Time – lack of time invested in training teachers.
