Vegetation management in the Houghton Lake Wetlands management area (MA) will provide forest products; maintain or enhance wildlife habitat; protect areas of unique threatened, endangered and special concern species; and provide for forest-based recreational uses. Timber management for this 10-year planning period will focus on balancing the aspen age-class distribution. Wildlife habitat management objectives include perpetuating early-successional communities for species adapted to young forests for hunting and other wildlife-related recreation opportunity. Expected trends within the next decade are the need to continue to balance aspen age-class distributions, an expected increase in recreation pressure and invasive species encroachment.
Upland soils consist of Saugatuck, Rubicon and Newton Loamy sands. Lowlands are dominated by Rifle peats. There is a long ridge that runs through the compartment knows as "Birch Hill".
Ownership is broken with multiple private ownerships.
The cut river flows through the compartment.

The cut river flows this compartment.
Sections 10-12, T23N R3W, Roscommon County Surface sediments consist of sand and gravel from ice-contact drift, glacial outwash, and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Mississippian Michigan Formation. The Michigan is quarried for gypsum elsewhere in the state. Most of the good gravel pits are associated with upland areas. Sand and gravel pits are located in sections 3 and 10, and there should be potential on the uplands in the NE¼ of Section 11. Active oil and gas production is greater than six miles away. However, all state minerals in the compartment are currently leased for oil and gas exploration and development.
Vehicle access is good with Lansing rd . bisecting the compartment. There are also multiple forest two tracks within the compartment.
Possible survey needed for the timber harvest in stand 21.

Additional Compartment Information:
Dispersed recreational use within the compartment occurs throughout the parcel for hiking, bird watching, berry / mushroom picking, deer hunting and small game hunting. The Cut river is used by hunters, anglers and water enthusiasts. Undesignated ORV trails are likely within the compartment from surrounding private land owners. Utilize forest management practices to curtail damage by off road vehicle use. The corridor along Lansing Rd. is traveled heavily during the color season
The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments – No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments – With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details
The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system
