Food/Plants are a source of energy and building materials for organisms

• A plant gets energy from the sun and it produces its own building materials. This process is called photosynthesis.• A plant is a source of food for some animals. When the animal eats the plant, the energy and building materials are passed on. For those animals that can’t eat plants—carnivores—they eat the plant eaters—herbivores/omnivores—in order to get their energy.

Herbivore: Zebra

Herbivore/omnivore: Varanus exabthematicus

Carnivore: Human, African Leopard

Energy and building materials pass from one living thing to the next.• Organisms get energy from the plants which get it from the sun. Organisms get building materials from just plants because plants can produce their own building materials.
