Adult Education has completed a full year in its new home in the Roslyn Annex. We are also entering the second year of Roslyn’s cooperative agreement with Herricks Adult Education. These two major changes

brought many new participants into the program in 2010-11. Thank you to everyone in our communities who enrolled in our expanded day and evening schedule of course offerings. I invite you to continue to be a part of Adult Education as we continue to grow in the years ahead.

keep the Aspidistra Flying by George Orwell Weeks 3 & 4 A satirical portrait of the literary life, orwell’s third novel chronicles the struggles of Gordon Comstock, who gives up a successful job in advertising to become an unsuccessful poet, tak-ing refuge by day in a failing bookshop as he descends into genteel poverty. Having vowed to “make it his special purpose not to ‘succeed’,” Comstock rails against “The Money God”. The aspidistra of the title refers to the ubiq-uitous plants on London’s window sills which, for Comstock, symbolize all that is wrong with the “mingy, lower-class decency” he is desperate to escape.

Sarah’s key by Tatiana de RosnayWeeks 1 and 2 Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is arrested with her family by the French police. Paris, May 2002: Journalist Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black day in France’s past. Through her inves-tigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family secrets that con-nect her to Sarah, and she begins to question her own place in France and to reevaluate her marriage and her life. It is a brilliantly subtle, com-pelling portrait of France under oc-cupation and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this pain-ful episode. A nY Times bestseller.

our visit takes us to the two most extraordinary garden cemeteries in Brooklyn, representing the “rural cemetery” movement of the mid-1800s. The idea of fashioning a cemetery into a garden or bucolic retreat, as a place where the living could gather for carriage rides, Sunday picnics, or sculpture viewing, was a way of coping with the inevitable. Green-Wood, founded in 1838, afforded 478 acres of hills, valleys, reflecting lakes, meadows, and glacial ponds, and became thegreatest tourist attraction of the 1850s. Its who’s-who list features Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Horace Greeley, Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, Lola Montes, Louis Gottschalk, Henry Steinway among other mayors, musicians, dancers, actors, politicians, et al. Their tombs and grave stones, pyramids, obelisks, and crypts, comprise some of the best sculpture and architecture of 19th-century new York. By staying undisturbed and sustaining their visual integrity, cemeteries encompass a microcosm that allows the visitor to virtually step back in time. notable also at Green-Wood, besides its Warren & Wetmore chapel, is its Gothic Revival entrance, designed by Richard Upjohn, which has now become a year- round retreat for nY’s largest colony of naturalized parakeets! The Cemetery of the Evergreens, founded in 1849, was the vision of Andrew Jackson Davis, who designed its Gothic Revival chapel and norman style gatehouse. The landscaping was done by his protégé, Frederick Law olmsted, whose philosophy of natural gardens, as in Central Park, holds forth here as well, with thousands of trees and specimen plantings. Like Green-Wood, Evergreens is an eye opener, representing many of the legends and facts behind nY’s history of the 19th century.

Brooklyn CemeteriesWe will visit some uncommonly visited sites in uptown new York that bespeak singular aspects of the city’s architecture, art and his-tory. The largest intact Tiffany interior, anywhere, still in its original setting, is in St. Michael’s Church on 102nd Street and Broadway. Designed in a Romanesque-Byzantine style, the church features Tiffany’s most spectacular window, St. Michael’s Victory in Heaven. . Then, we proceed to Columbia University to visit Casa Italiana, McKim Mead and White’s 1926 interpretation of a Florentine Pala-

zzo, gloriously restored in the 1990’s by the great grandson of Stanford White. Notable is the finely detailed decorativeceiling and period interior of the wood paneled library. next stop is St. Paul’s Chapel, 1903, designed by Isaac new-ton Phelps Stokes, with stained glass by John Lafarge and Maitland Armstrong. We will enjoy a dutch-treat lunch at one of the many lively restaurants surround-ing the college. Afterwards, we visit the Hispanic Society of America, where Goya’s Duchess of Alba, El Greco’s Saint Jerome, along with great paintings by Velasquez, Zurburan, and Sorolla, and an extraordinary collection of Hispano-Mauresque tiles and glazed ceramic vessels, await us. Founded in 1908, by

scholar and philanthropist, Archer Huntington, it is a highlight of the Audubon Terrace’s beaux arts enclave. Finally, across the street, we’ll tour Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue’s 1915 neo Gothic mas-terpiece, the Church of the Intercession, along with its attendant Trinity Cemetery, whose many distinguished burials include Clem-ent Moore, who wrote ‘Twas the Night before Christmas, and artist/ornithologist John James Audubon, upon whose 50-acre farm the cemetery, church, and Terrace complex were built.

War Horse is one of the most origi-nal, moving and memorable shows that I have ever seen, and I wanted to make it possible for our Adult Educa-tion participants to experience it for themselves, before its landmark run at Lincoln Center ends in December. The story is a simple one: a young English soldier searches for his lost horse in the chaos and violence of France during the First World War. But the play also tells several other stories: the struggle to maintain one’s humanity in the face of war’s terrifying ferocity; the strength of individual will against even the most dreadful misfortune; and, most of all, the overpowering bond of love between man and animal. The stagecraft employed to tell the story is simply indescribable, brilliantly drawing upon the audience’s imagination to cre-ate scene after scene of great emotional power. The depiction of war is vivid, but never gory as in the movies. Most extraor-dinary is the use of puppetry to portray the horses, which is like nothing you have ever seen on stage. The animals come aliveascharactersinthestory, ascompletelyasiftheywerefleshandblood. The creators of War Horse have so expertly integrated the elements of theater—story, character, music, drama, staging—thattheshowisrivetingfromthefirstmomenttothelast, andwillstaywithyoulongafteryouhaveseenit.
