Advisor Notes:

By now, your club members should be registered for County Quality Assurance. Remind them to be on time for their session

The other option for members is to attend a QA program at a qualified area or state event. For dates and locations check your 4-H calendar, the Extension office, or go to ross.osu.edu, click on 4-H Youth Development, then click on the Quality Assurance article.

Remind your members that if they do attend a QA in another county or a State event, it is the youth’s responsibility to bring proof back to the Ross County Extension office!

NEW QA Option:

This QA, taught by Noble County 4-H Educator Nancy Snook, will be tailored for Beef exhibitors but will meet the annual QA requirements for all species. ROSS COUNTY LITTER CONTROL & RECYCLING WANTS YOU! Please join Ross County Litter Control & Recycling for their Annual Spring Cleanup Campaign from April 1—May 31. 4-H clubs (ages 12 and up recommended) can participate by volunteering to clean a section of county or township roadway, waterway or other public area. Ross County Litter Control & Recycling will loan you a trunk that contains safety vests, a first aid kit, a caution flag and bags for your cleanup. A Materials Checklist, Safety Considerations and Summary Report are included. You are not responsible for disposal. When you schedule your cleanup, Ross County Litter Control will schedule a time to pick up your bags of litter following your cleanup. Your group benefits by providing valuable community service that improves our local environment while providing Environmental and Safety Officer activities.

Our Adopt-A-Road Program is also available to 4-H clubs. To become an Adopt-A-Road partner, your club would agree to clean an approximate 2 mile stretch of a county or township road of your choice twice a year. Trunk materials and disposal are provided. Ages 12 and up are eligible.

Our 18th

Annual Scioto River Cleanup will be Saturday, April 18th, beginning at 10:00am. Meet at the last parking lot to the right in the Chillicothe Annex below the floodwall. This event takes place rain or shine (unless severe weather—listen to WKKJ for cancellation). Be sure to wear old clothes, rubber boots and bring gloves! Refreshments provided. Documentation of participation for scrapbooks provided upon request.

Guest Speaker presentations are available on recycling, litter prevention, resource conservation, lowering your carbon footprint and other related topics. All presentations are FREE and can be scheduled for evening or weekend meetings with advanced notice. This is a great way to fulfill environmental or health and safety requirements!

For presentations, questions about Adopt-A-Road or other community service opportunities or to schedule your cleanup, please contact Judi Mannion at 740-772-5326. We look forward to hearing from you!

FAIR & JR. FAIR BOOTH THEMES 2015

Located in the Jr. Fair Building, your club’s fair booth will provide a friendly welcome to the public when visiting the Ross County Fair! Booths promote the 4-H program and demonstrate the positive impact and creative expression that youth experience through 4-H. By decorating a booth your club gets to show off its members, their accomplishments, and the many projects available. For fair booth design, clubs should submit theme suggestions to the 4-H office. We will provide you with the official slogan for the Fair/Fair Book in the May Family Hotline. Club fair booth requests are due by May 15 to the Extension office. NOTE: Any 4-H Club that has over 15 projects in the areas of General Projects, Food & Nutrition Projects, and Family & Consumer Science Projects (but NOT including livestock projects) MUST have a fair booth. The booth does not have to be judged—however you do need to paper the booth and identify projects and members which makes a better display for the public. Contact the office if your club has less than 15 projects and would like a booth (space permitting).

Cloverbuds are encouraged to have an item for display, but it is not mandatory.

Livestock Projects are not required to be represented in your booth. Do not display their books.

Project Books do NOT have to be in your booth unless they are a part of the project’s Fair Exhibit Requirements.

Refer to pages 73-75 of your “4-H Club Handbook” for 4-H Booth Guidelines & the Booth Request Form.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT: SKILLATHON PREP

The Amazing Country Kids are excited that Ross County Skillathon is back! As advisors, we feel it is important that our members get a full learning experience when taking an animal project. Skillathon is an important avenue in meeting this goal. Skillathon provides our members with incentives to learn more about raising livestock for market than focusing on showmanship alone.

Skillathon can seem overwhelming unless you are fully prepared. We have strategically made some club-wide plans in order to achieve success for our members. We have assigned club members, parents and advisors to our Skillathon committee. This committee is organizing several learning activities that will take place throughout the year at meetings. The goal is to enhance learning for members taking animal projects. We also are planning our own Amazing Country Kids club Skillathon. Our current plans for the club Skillathon meeting include:

1. Divide club members into teams of various ages with similar livestock interests.

2. Each team will rotate through a group of Skillathon stations, such as species-focused body parts, breeds, cuts of meat and quality assurance.

3. Each team member will individually participate in the activities at each station and will be given points for correct answers.

4. After all members have visited all the stations, each team’s score will be calculated by summing the scores of the members assigned to that team.

5. The team with the highest points will receive a grand prize.

We are also encouraging our members to attend the Skillathon practice day that will take place at the Fairgrounds on July 16, same days as General Project Day.

TSC & 4-H PAPER CLOVERS The Spring Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover

fundraiser is right around the corner. Stop by the Chillicothe TSC from April 23-May 4 and support Ross County 4-H by purchasing a paper clover at the check-

out! This year they will have both $1 & $5 donation

increments in stores. Larger Clovers will be used for the $5 donations so they will be easier to see than the $1

and they make more money for the county 4-H program. All clovers will also have a bounce back coupon at the

bottom.

If we have some kind of in-store activity (clubs doing demonstrations or promoting some aspect of 4-H, etc.)

we will receive 100% of the funds raised above what we raised last year in the Spring promotion. So let us know

if you are interested.
