Laughter Yoga Project Update Report by Past President Peter Tan
Laughter Yoga bringing joy and improved health to seniors at Community Centres.
The two sets of 10-session programs of Laughter Yoga, one with the South East Community Development Council (SE CDC) and the other at the North East Community Development Council (NE CDC) have now been completed. They started in mid January with a weekly session at each CDC and ended at the 10th session at end of March. Following photos shows the end of the 10th session’s celebration of happy seniors having “Smiley” cupcakes.
This is a Community Service Committee project championed by Rtn Stacy McCarthy and supported by our Club in one part by donations gathered at an auction of a painting made by our own Rotarian Terry Lobaton .
The next stage of the project is the “training the trainer” program that has the objective to developing the capacity to introduce laughter Yoga sessions to bring joy to many more seniors at community centres and community clubs throughout Singapore.

Speaker, Mr Prem Kumar Rtn Joseph Chia
President Keith called upon Programmes Chairman, Rtn Joseph Chia to introduce the Speaker, Mr Prem Kumar. Rtn Joseph noted that SACA has a long association with the Club which started in 1958, when the then President Ee Soon Howe and the Club helped to raise funds for SACA’s premises at 81 Dunlop Street. Furthermore, Rtn Joseph added that about 12 years ago, the Club’s Major Project was to aid SACA. Rtn Joseph advised that Mr Kumar graduated in 1993 with a BA (Hons) in Social Science from the National University of Singapore. He joined SACA as an Aftercare Officer in 1994, and has held various appointments before assuming his current position in 2004.
Mr Kumar gave an overview of SACA as a Voluntary Welfare Organisation which started out by providing shelter for homeless ex-offenders, but now has a whole slew of projects to focus on families of offenders. He noted that the primary support for ex-offenders would be the family. However, citing SACA’s experience, Mr Kumar advised that about 50% of ex-offenders have supportive families, whilst many would be estranged from their families. He further advised that some families might not be in a position to support the ex-offenders nor have conducive home environments for their return. Mr Kumar spoke on how SACA was
addressing this issue by its focus on children of inmate mothers and their caregivers with its intervention programme at the point of incarceration, particularly for families of first time offenders. In his vote of thanks to Mr Kumar, Rtn Louis Lim recounted how one of the Club’s Artisan of the Year Award winners, an ex-offender, turned his life around and became a success. Rtn Louis thanked SACA for their work to help ex-offenders and their families. He added that having completed a 12-year cycle, perhaps SACA might once again be considered for next year’s Major Project.
Speaker: Mr Prem Kumar, Director Singapore After-Care Association (SACA)

The Guide to Daily Living
Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the
Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and
act upon them:
First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?
Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?
Third: Have I given my best to my work?
Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?
The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.
The Four-Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendship?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
