Dear Fellows Rotarians,The exciting experience we shared

during the XXV District Congress dedicated to theMediterranean has characterised our work during the month of

May with very important and satisfactory results and events,which PDG Marilyn Potts, Representative for the

International president also participated in.I refer to the contents of the Congress held at Giardini-Naxos

and the round-table at Taormina; the publication of the “Guideto Rotarian awards”, and the objectexhibition with its catalogue whichreminded us of many years of good

Rotary in Sicily.The great participation in this event

allowed me to get to know newfriends and see old ones again that

I will forever remain bound tobecause they have been generous in

terms of availability to andenthusiasm for the Rotary.

During my year of service I havebeen especially lucky in my choice of

staff, to whom I always delegatedvarious sectors of our activity, and

who all achieved the objectives entrusted to them.

The District has excellent managersand thanks to their professionalism,

presidents are surrounded by firstclass assistants, just like the world

of business, producing veryimportant initiatives finding

adequate notoriety in the “posterexhibition”, which I observe with

real interest for the importance it will have as far as multi-medial communications are concerned.

On June 30th we shall take a step back and return to our previous positions.

The rotation principle allows a substitution of strength,stimulating those elected to serve and give without saving their

energy and also to doing their utmost, this because soon anotherwill replace them, with fresher energies in turn

producing the greatest effort.We should not forget that in the Rotary one does not assume

privileged positions; if there is a hierarchy it is determined by therole one is appointed to at the time.

Those who have been at the top have perhaps only acquired

Cari Amici Rotariani,l’emozionante esperienza vissuta insieme, in occasione del XXV Congresso Distrettuale dedicatoal Mediterraneo, ha caratterizzato la nostra azione nel mese dimaggio, con realizzazioni e manifestazioni veramente di rilievo e di grande soddisfazione, alle quali ha partecipato il PDG Marilyn Potts,Rappresentante del Presidente Internazionale.Mi riferisco ai contenuti del Congresso di Giardini-Naxos edella tavola rotonda di Taormina;alla pubblicazione della “Guida aipremi rotariani”, alla mostradell’oggettistica, con il relativocatalogo, che ci ha ricordato moltianni di buon Rotary in Sicilia.La grande partecipazione all’eventomi ha permesso di conoscere nuoviamici e di rivedere i vecchi, ai qualiresterò legato per sempre, perchétanto hanno dato al Rotary indisponibilità ed entusiasmo.Nel mio anno di servizio sono statoparticolarmente fortunato nellascelta dei collaboratori, ai quali hodelegato diversi settori di attività, enei quali tutti hanno realizzato gliobiettivi che gli erano stati affidati.Il Distretto ha buoni manager e, conla loro professionalità, anche ipresidenti, così come si fa nel mondodegli affari, si sono circondati diottimi collaboratori, producendoiniziative di grande rilievo, chehanno trovato adeguata notorietànella “mostra dei poster”, alla quale guardo con vero interesseper la valenza che essa avrà sul piano della comunicazionemultimediale.Il 30 giugno faremo un passo indietro e rientreremo nei ranghi.Il principio della rotazione rende possibile il ricambio delle forze,stimolando chi ha il compito di servire e dare, senza risparmiodi energie, “a tirare”, perché presto sarà rilevato da un altro,più fresco di energie, che in vece sua produrrà, a sua volta, ilmassimo sforzo.Nel Rotary, non dimentichiamolo, non si devono acquisireposizioni di privilegio, se vi è una gerarchia, essa è determinatadal ruolo che si ricopre nel singolo momento.Chi è stato al vertice, forse, ha soltanto acquisito una maggiore

esperienza ed una più alta responsabilità morale, cuiconseguono maggiori doveri per il futuro; tra quei doverivedo il mio: tornare a servire ancora con entusiasmo, inqualità di semplice gregario, nel mio club.Il passaggio della campana, che tra poco avverrà, non potràfar cessare l’affetto verso chi è stato vicino, verso chi hasofferto e ha gioito con noi e, nel mio caso, verso coloro chehanno con me gioito e sofferto, non perché servivano ilGovernatore, che era al vertice, ma perché con il Governatoreavevano identità di vedute, stima reciproca e condivisione divalori.Cari presidenti e segretari, ciò vale anche per voi, come, pervoi e per me, non cesseranno gli affetti che siamo riusciti aconquistarci.Questo è il premio più ambito, il più prezioso, perchécontinua nel tempo, perché si rinnova di giorno in giorno, ecostituisce una vera, ultima, posizione di privilegio, chepermane anche dopo essere rientrati nei ranghi.La vita è un percorso.Si lascia una posizione, non per sostituirla con un’altra, maperché anche quella era solo una stazione del nostro cammino.Nell’andare avanti e indietro realizziamo i nostri pensieriche, proprio nel percorso in un senso o nell’altro, ciconsentono di avanzare.“Il passo indietro che contribuisce alla nostra maturazionerende possibile l’ingresso della nostra esperienza nella storia”.Il cammino verso il significato della propria esistenza, vagiudicato nella sua interezza; vittorie e sconfitte, nella consa-pevolezza che anche in queste ultime l’esperienza acquisita ècerta occasione per la gloria del domani.Il mese di giugno è caratterizzato da alcuni importanti avve-nimenti: giorno sette mattina, a Pergusa, il III Seminarioper la formazione dei nuovi soci; nel pomeriggio, a Catania,l’inaugurazione della mostra dal titolo: “Il volontariato d’ar-te: sei lustri di restauri del Rotary Club di Sicilia e Malta”.Gli altri appuntamenti significativi: il 14 e il 15, con leelettrizzanti giornate dell’Assemblea Distrettuale a Trapani;ed il 22, a Marsala con la tradizionale “Vogalonga” e laconsegna della Coppa Rotary.Infine, giorno 29, l’inaugurazione dei nuovi localidell’Archivio Distrettuale a Caltanissetta.A voi tutti rotariani auguro di ritrovarvi il prossimo primoluglio con il cuore colmo di gioia, interiormente arricchitidagli obiettivi raggiunti e dagli affetti conquistati.Vi attende uno straordinario nuovo anno di successo!Da ultimo, un pensiero desidero rivolgere al mio club, allostaff, ai presidenti ed a tutti i collaboratori, qualetestimonianza di riconoscenza per il loro impegno rotariano.Ancora una parola speciale per i Past Governor, del mio edegli altri Distretti, alle cui parole mi sono ispirato,prendendole in prestito, per parlare, oggi come ieri, in unadimensione di continuità, attraverso il bollettino, agli amici,rotariani nel mondo.“Diffondete il seme dell’amore” ha esortato con il suo tema ilPresidente Internazionale Bichai Rattakul; continuate adiffonderlo! my return to writing with enthusiasm, just as a simple supporter in my Club.

The passing of the bell, which will soon take place, will notput an end to my affection for those who have been close to

me, for those who have suffered and rejoiced with us, and inmy case for those who did so not because they served the

Governor who was at the top, but because they shared withthe Governor the same views, reciprocal respect and values.

Dear Presidents and Secretaries, the same also applies to you,just as both for you and for myself the affection we have

managed to conquer will not cease.This is the most wished for and precious award,

because it continues in time, it is renewed day after day, andconstitutes the real, ultimate privileged appointment that

remains even after one has returned to the ranks.Life is a journey.

One leaves one position, not to replace it with another, butbecause that was only a stop in our journey.

While travelling to and fro we achieve our thoughtsthat in this very travelling to and fro allow

us to advance.“A step backwards that contributes to our maturing renders

possible the entry of our experience in history”.The journey towards the meaning of

ones own existence should be judged in its entirety; victoriesand defeats, with the awareness that in these too experience

acquired represents a certain opportunity for tomorrow’s glory.

The month of June is characterised by a number of importantoccasions: on the morning of the 7th in Pergusa, the 3rd

Seminary for the formation of new members will be held; inthe afternoon in Catania there will be the inauguration of

an exhibition entitled: “Artistic voluntary service: thirty yearsof restoration by the Sicily and Malta Rotary Club”.

Other important appointments are: on the 14th and the 15th,the electrifying days of the District assembly in Trapani; and

on the 22nd in Marsala with the traditional “Vogalonga”and the presentation of the Rotary Cup.

Finally on the 28th, there is the inauguration of the newpremises for the District Archives in Caltanissetta.

I wish to meet all Rotarians again next July with your heartsfilled with joy, even more enriched by your achievements and

the affection you will have conquered.A wonderful year filled with success awaits you!

Lastly I wish to mention my Club, the staff, the presidentsand all the helpers, as a testimony of my gratefulness for

their Rotarian commitment.One more special thought for Past Governors,

mine and those of other Districts, whose words have inspiredme as I borrowed them for my words to Rotarian friends all

over the world, in the past and still today, in a dimension ofcontinuity through the bulletin.

“Sow the seeds of love” exhorted with his theme theInternational President Bichai Rattakul; continue to do so is

my exhortation also in holding out my hand…

FORUM INTERDISTRETTUALEDEI DISTRETTI 2100, 2110, 2120

Nei giorni 21-23 marzo 2003, presso il Venus SeaGarden Hotel di Augusta, organizzato dal RotaryClub di Augusta, si è svolto il Forum interdistrettualedei tre distretti 2100,2110,2120 sul tema: “Politica,Economia e Società dopo l’11 Settembre”. Al forumhanno partecipato numerosi soci (accompagnatidalle rispettive consorti) appartenenti ai tre Distrettidell’Italia meridionale. Numerose le autorità presen-ti all’apertura del Forum. Dopo il saluto di benvenu-to del presidente del Club, Giorgio Bernardi, del vicesindaco di Augusta, Danilo Circo, e del comandantedella base navale locale, amm. Oreste Guglielmino,hanno preso la parola, nell’ordine, GennaroEsposito, Governatore del Distretto2100, Domenico Lamastra,Governatore del Distretto 2120.Entrambi pongono l’accento sul“rito” che ancora quest’anno si rin-nova con l'attuale Forum, per rin-saldare i vincoli di amicizia rotaria-na che legano i tre Distretti checostituivano fino a qualche decen-nio fa un’ unica entità territoriale,l'ex Distretto 190. Ha concluso ilGovernatore del Distretto 2110,Carlo Marullo di Condojanni, che hareso omaggio alla memoria del PastGovemor del Distretto 190, PasqualePastore, al quale è intitolata l’omoni-ma Fondazione rotariana, formulan-do auspici di nuovi e più stretti rap-porti e proponendo la costituzione diun archivio degli atti dei congressitenuti nei tre Distretti.

La prima relazione dell’Ambascia-tore Francesco Paolo Fulci, impossibili-tato ad essere presente per motivi disicurezza, è stata letta da MaurizioTriscari, istruttore distrettuale nel Distretto 2110. Leconclusioni della relazione portano alla necessità cheal termine della lotta al terrorismo conseguenteall’11 Settembre, si dovrà tornare all’ONU per farfronte alle esigenza umanitarie e alla ricostruzione,ristabilendo la legittimità internazionale riconoscen-do il ruolo insostituibile dell’ONU.

É seguita l’assegnazione del Premio Pastore, pre-sentato dal Presidente della Fondazione, Franco Tatòe dal presidente della commissione esaminatrice,prof. Tranchina. Sono stati premiati la dott.ssaAnnalisa Buonadonna dell’Università di Salerno e ladott.ssa Annamaria Siagura dell’Università diPalermo. Dopo la colazione di lavoro c’è stata la rela-zione del prof. Riccardo Mercurio, Ordinario diEconomia all’Università di Napoli sul tema “L’aspettoeconomico dopo l’11 Settembre”. Dopo un’ampiaconsiderazione sul tema in discussione, ha concluso

An inter-district Forum for Districts 2100, 2110, and2120 was held on March 21-23 2003, at the Venus SeaGarden Hotel in Augusta and organized by the AugustaRotary Club, the subject of the debate was: “Politics,Economy and Society after September 11th”.Numerous members belonging to the three Districts inSouthern Italy participated in this forum (accompaniedby their wives). Many authorities were also present atthe opening ceremony. After welcome speeches by theClub President Giorgio Bernardi, by Augusta’s vice-mayor Danilo Circo and by the Commander of the localnaval base, Admiral Oreste Guglielmino, there werealso speeches by Gennaro Esposito, Governor for

District 2100, and by Domenico Lamastra,Governor for District 2120. Both speakersemphasised the “ritual” renewed once againthis year with the current Forum, forstrengthening the bonds of Rotarian friend-ship that link the three Districts that until afew decades ago formed one territorial body,former District 190. The last to speak was theGovernor for District 2110, Carlo Marullo diCondojanni, who paid homage to the mem-ory of the Governor for District 190,Pasquale Pastore, after whom the homony-mous Rotary Foundation is named,expressing hope for new and closer rela-tions and also proposing the creation of anew archive for the minutes of congressesorganised in the three Districts.

The first report by AmbassadorFrancesco Paolo Fulci, unable to attendfor security reasons, was read by MaurizioTriscari, District Instructor for District2110.

The conclusions indicated the need,at the end of the battle against terrorism

resulting from September 11th, to return to the UNto confront humanitarian needs and reconstructionestablishing international legitimacy acknowledging theUN’s irreplaceable role.

The Pastore Award was then presented by TheFoundation’s president Franco Tatò and by thePresident of the examining committee professorTranchina. Awards were presented to Mrs. AnnalisaBuonadonna from Salerno University and Mrs.Annamaria Siagura from Palermo University. After aworking lunch Professor Riccardo Mercurio, professorof Economy at Naples University, spoke on the subject“Post September 11th economic aspects”. After a broadanalysis of the subject he concluded saying that: if onewishes to be positive it is important to look top thefuture with optimism. This is our chance to rely on ourculture, our professionalism and our competence. Thespeech by professor Mercurio resulted in an interestingdebate followed by a speech by Mr. Bruno Marziano,

che se si vuole essere positivi è importante guardareavanti con ottimismo. La nostra grande opportunitàè di puntare sulla nostra cultura, sulla nostra profes-sionalità e sulle nostre competenze. La relazione delprof. Mercurio ha acceso un interessante dibattito cuiè seguito l'inter-vento del dott.Bruno Marzia-no, presidentedella ProvinciaRegionale di Si-racusa, il qualeha evidenziatoun nuovo mo-dello di sviluppoeconomico dellanostra provincia.

La terza rela-zione, è stata tenuta dal Dirigente Scolastico,dott. Luigi Palombella, su “Aspetti sociali dopol’11 Settembre”, il quale, dopo aver affermatoche quello che è accaduto in quella data eratotalmente imprevedibile e nessuno era ingrado di ipotizzare un attacco di questo tipo,ha concluso sottolineando che è necessariauna maggiore uguaglianza e una maggiore giustizia.A chiusura del Forum, il governatore Marullo diCondojanni ha fatto una rapida sintesi di quantodetto, ascoltato e dibattuto, giungendo alla conclu-sione che le tre relazioni ci pongono in una situazio-ne di cauto ottimismo per il domani. I Governatoridei tre Distretti faranno da cassa di risonanza delleconclusioni di questo Forum, non solo attraverso ibollettini ma anche personalmente, all'interno ditutti i Club e attraverso la diffusione delle idee contutti i mezzi che i moderni sistemi di comunicazionemettono a disposizione. In serata ha avuto luogo lacena di gala “dei Governatori” seguita da uno spetta-colo folkloristico di canterini e ballerini augustanivisibilmente apprezzato da tutti i presenti.

L’indomani dopo la celebrazione della SantaMessa, i partecipanti esterni hanno fatto ritorno alleloro destinazioni d’origine. L’organizzazione è stataperfetta e i partecipanti lo hanno messo in evidenzaripetutamente, grazie all’impegno dei rotariani e deirotaractiani di Augusta e del Comitato organizzativocon il suo presidente, dott. Concetto Lombardo, edel presidente del Club di Augusta, c.amm. GiorgioBernardi.

President of the Regional Province of Siracusa, whoemphasised a new model for the economic develop-ment of our province.

The third speech was held by Educational ManagerMr. Luigi Palombella, on “Social aspects after

September 11th”, who after stating that this eventwas totally unpredictable and that no one couldhave envisaged an attack of this kind, concludedby em-phasising the need for greater equalityand gre-ater justice.

In closing the Forum, Governor Marullo diCondojanni rapidly summarised what had

been said, lis-tened to anddebated, reach-ing the conclu-sion that thethree speechesshowed a degreeof optimism forthe future. TheGovernors forthe three Dis-tricts will ensurethe diffusion of

the Forum’s conclusions, not only through bulletins,but also personally, in all the Clubs and broadcastingthese ideas using all the means made available bymodern communications technology. A Governors’Gala evening was held followed by folkloristic enter-tainment with singers and dancers from Augusta, vis-ibly appreciated by all present.

After celebration of Holy Mass the next morning, theparticipants who had travelled to the Forum returnedhome. The organisation was perfect, as repeatedlyacknowledged by all participants, thanks to the commit-ment of Augusta Rotarians and Rotaract members andthe organising committee with its President Mr.Concetto Lombardo, and the Augusta Club PresidentMr. Giorgio Bernardi.

NUOVA SEDE DELL’ARCHIVIO STORICO

Domenica 29 Giugno 2003, alle ore 11.30, nelplesso scolastico M. Abbate, via Leone XIII, aCaltanissetta, sarà dato inizio al Progetto delCentenario: “Archivio Storico Distrettuale: un’occa-sione di storia e memoria”.

I rotariani sono vivamente invitati ad intervenire.

FORUMIL ROTARY PER GLI AGRUMI DI SICILIA

Un patrimonio economico, ambientale, sociale,culturale e paesaggistico da salvare

Promosso e organizzato dal Rotary Club CataniaEst, con la partecipazione degli altri nove club Rotarydell’Area Etnea, ha avuto luogo a Catania sabato 5aprile u.s., nello splendido Auditorium di “VillaScammacca”, il Forum “Il Rotary per gli agrumi diSicilia”.

L’argomento, sempre di attuale interesse per le dif-ficoltà che continua ad attraversare questo importan-te comparto della nostra realtà siciliana, i relatorialtamente qualificati per affrontare le tematiche pro-poste, la parte organizzativa curata nei minimi parti-colari che ha coinvolto anche i ragazzi dei nostriRotaract, questi alcuni tra i fattori che hanno deter-minato il successo dell’iniziativa che ha fatto registra-re 280 qualificate presenze tra ospiti e rotariani deivari club dell’Area Etnea, e non solo.

La presenza del Sindaco di Catania, on. prof.Umberto Scapagnini, di S.E. l’Arcivescovo Mons.Salvatore Gristina, del presidente della Provinciaon.le Nello Musumeci, del Magnifico Rettoredell’Università di Catania prof. Ferdinado Latteri, delnostro Governatore prof. avv. Carlo Marullo diCondojanni, deiparlamentari on.Giovanni Bur-tone, sen. Adel-fio Basile, on.Giuseppe Palum-bo, nonché dialtri esponenti dirilievo tra cui ildott. Antonio LaGumina, Presi-dente della Camera di Commercio Italiana per laFrancia, il direttore/editore del giornale “La Sicilia”dott. Mario Ciancio Sanfilippo, i presidenti delle asso-ciazioni dei produttori, alcuni sindaci dei comuniagrumetati, dei PDG avv. Antonello Dato, Pprof.Salvatore Cocuzza Silvestri, dott. Attilio Bruno e dimolti altri, ha conferito la giusta evidenza e impor-tanza a questo evento, volto a dimostrare l’impegnoconcreto del Rotary per un problema di enorme rile-vanza per il nostro territorio, qual è quello della crisiin cui versa la nostra agrumicoltura.

La pubblicazione degli atti, che sarà effettuataquanto prima, contribuirà concretamente a divulga-re, anche presso le Autorità e le Istituzioni compe-tenti, nonché la parte politica e tutte le organizzazio-ni a vario titolo interessate, le approfondite analisi, laprogettualità e le proposte emersedalle qualificate relazioni ed inter-venti del Forum che, se dovuta-mente attenzionati, possono con-tribuire ad avviare a soluzione levarie e complesse problematicheche non permettono alla nostra agrumi-coltura di superare lo stato di crisi in cui si trova, mal-grado i fiumi di parole e di denaro spesi.

FORUM - THE ROTARY IN FAVOUROF CITRUS FRUITS IN SICILY

A economic, environmental, social, culturaland landscapist legacy to be saved

The Forum “The Rotary in favour of citrus fruits inSicily” was held in Catania on Saturday April 3rd in thesplendid “Villa Scammacca” Auditorium, promotedand organised by the Catania East Rotary Club withthe participation of nine other Rotary Clubs from theEtna area.

The subject is always interesting due to the prob-lems that continue to afflict this important sector inSicily, the speakers were highly qualified for discussingthe subject of this Forum, the organisation was care-fully prepared in detail with the help of the youngRotaract members and these are only some of the fac-tors that ensured the success of this initiative that saw280 qualified presences between guests and Rotariansfrom various clubs in the Etna area and also from fur-ther away.

The presence of Catania’s Mayor, the Hon.Professor Umberto Scapagnini, of H.E. theArchbishop Monsignor Salvatore Gristina, of thePresident of the Province the Hon. Nello Musumeci,the Chancellor of Catania University ProfessorFerdinado Latteri, our Governor Professor Carlo

Marullo di Con-dojanni, the mem-bers of parliamentthe Hon. Giovan-ni Burtone, Sena-tor Adelfio Basile,the Hon. Giusep-pe Palumbo, aswell as otherimportant mem-bers such as Mr.

Antonio La Gumina, President of the Italian Chamberof Commerce for France, the editor of the daily paper“La Sicilia” Mr. Mario Ciancio Sanfilippo, the presi-dents of the associations representing producers, anumber of mayors from citrus fruit growing areas, thePDGs Mr. Antonello Dato, Professor Salvatore CocuzzaSilvestri, Mr. Attilio Bruno and many others, conferredthe right emphasis and importance to this event, com-mitted to proving the Rotary’s serious commitment tothis immensely important problem for our territory,represented by the crisis in the citrus fruit growing sec-tor.

The publication of the minutes, which will takeplace shortly, will really contribute to making availablethe in-depth analysis, the projects and proposals thatemerged from the qualified speeches and interven-

tions also to competent authorities andinstitutions as well as to political partiesand interested organisations. If carefullystudied these minutes may contribute tofinding solutions for the varied and com-

plex problems that do not allow our citrusfruit growing industry to overcome the cri-

sis it finds itself in, in spite of the rivers of wordsand money already spent.

L’EUROPONTE

IL PONTE SOSPESO PIU LUNGO DEL MONDOSULLO STRETTO DI MESSINA

Presumibilmente nel 2010, il collegamento stabiletra la sponda calabrese e quella siciliana, doneràrealtà ad un sogno antico di secoli.

Una realtà costituita da un Ponte sospeso che saràil più lungo del mondo, ad arcata unica, con unaluce di 3300 metri.

La nostra storia rotariana recente ha dimostratocon quanta sensibilità ed interesse, il nostro Distrettoha seguito e continuerà a seguire, l’iter realizzativodella nuova importante struttura per fornire contempestività idee, stimoli, suggerimenti e sollecita-zioni associandosi idealmente all’impegno delletante intelligenze e delle maestranze che, sopra quelmare, saranno ad operare.

Il Distretto sarà anche accanto a istituzioni pubbli-che e operatori privati i quali, in questo delicatissimoed importante momento storico, vivono l’impegnoper la costruzione del Ponte che già progettualmen-te si pone come lamaggiore opera d’in-gegneria mai realizzatadall’uomo.

Sin dall’ottobre 1988,data di un fecondoForum Internazionaledei distretti 210° e 211°organizzato dal Club diMilazzo, Il Rotary ri-chiamò l’attenzione delle Autorità politiche edamministrative deputate ad affrontare tematiche edindividuare soluzioni riguardo la costruzione delPonte, evidenziando in quella occasione, le urgenze,non più suscettibili di rinvii, in uno agli apprezza-menti per il lavoro svolto dalla Società Stretto diMessina.

La vasta eco suscitata ebbe il merito di indurre uti-lissimi interventi governativi finalizzati all’incentiva-zione degli studi e delle ricerche riguardanti le spe-cifiche progettuali.

Nel gennaio del 1992, dando continuità alla pro-pria azione di servizio, il Club di Milazzo organizzòun nuovo convegno. In tale occasione venne espostoil modello del futuro manufatto e soprattutto rilan-ciata, grazie alla partecipazione di Autorità civili e diResponsabili delle Società operanti nel settore, l’in-derogabile utilità del Ponte non solo per lo sviluppoeconomico e l’integrazione sociale della nostra real-tà in quella europea e mediterranea ma, anche perun adeguamento delle infrastrutture e delle tecnolo-gie del nostro territorio ai più attuali livelli di unaSocietà in inarrestabile crescita. Altri importanti con-vegni sono seguiti con proficuo risultato.

Sono trascorsi oltre trenta anni dalla emanazionedella legge 17 dicembre 1971 n°1158 che autorizzava

THE LONGEST SUSPENSION BRIDGE IN THE WORLDOVER THE STRAITS OF MESSINA

Presumably by the year 2010, the permanent linkbetween the Calabrian and Sicilian shores will make adream that has lasted centuries come true.

A reality formed by a suspension bridge which willbe the longest in the world, with only one arch, and aspan of 3300 metres.

Our recent Rotarian history has proved with howmuch sensitivity and interest our District has followedand will continue to follow the creation of this newimportant structure so as to provide quickly ideas,stimuli, suggestions and encouragement, ideally sup-porting the commitment of so many intelligences andskilled workers who will work over that sea.

But our District will also support the public institu-tions and the private companies which, during thisvery delicate and important historical moment, arecommitted to the building of this bridge which alreadyin the planning stages appears as the greatest engi-

neering feat ever creat-ed by mankind.

Ever since October1988, the date of thesuccessful Interna-tion-al Forum of the 210th

and the 211th

Districtsorganized by theMilazzo Club, theRotary attracted the

attention of those political and administrative author-ities, whose duty it is to confront problems and comeup with solutions concerning the creation of thisbridge, emphasising the urgency which could nolonger be delayed, in a document illustrating appreci-ation for the work undertaken by the company SocietàStretto di Messina.

The vast echo that resulted had the merit of encour-aging extremely useful interventions by the govern-ment finalised in incentives for studies and researchconcerning the plan’s specifications.

In January 1992, providing continuity to its service,the Milazzo Club, organized another convention. Onthis occasion a model of the bridge was exhibited andthe issue of this project was above all raised onceagain, thanks to the participation of the civil authori-ties and the Company representatives operating in thissector, emphasising the undelayable usefulness of theBridge not only for the economic development andsocial integration of our reality in a European andMediterranean context, but also for an adjustment ofthe infrastructures and technologies on our territoryto the more modern levels of a society undergoingconstant growth.

Others importants meetings follows with big results.Thirty years have gone by since the approval of a law

la costruzione di un collegamento stabile viario e fer-roviario tra la Sicilia e il continente europeo; e oltreventi dalla costituzione della “Stretto di Messinas.p.a.”, alla quale venne affidato il compito dello stu-dio e della progettazione dell’opera che, ad oggi, hadato luogo a spese per oltre cento miliardi delle vec-chie lire.

Anni trascorsi, pur rendendoci conto delle enor-mi difficoltà tecniche, economiche e politiche disse-minate lungo la strada di quella Società, in attesa disapere. E di capire.

Oggi, alla luce delle conoscenze acquisite, nonsono da ritenere accettabili ulteriori remore, di ognitipo e natura, che possano essere frapposte lungo ilcammino tecnico-procedurale del Ponte, soprattuttodalle parti politiche, senza distinzione alcuna, che,operando nelle opportune sedi istituzionali, hannoinvece il dovere di adoperarsi affinché tempi e finan-ziamenti connessi alla costruzione della nuova strut-tura non subiscano modificazioni e contrazioni chene possano ancora pregiudicare la realizzazione.

Superate diatribe e strumentalizzazioni che hannoindotto ritardi, con conseguente rilevante inaspri-mento di costi oggi, alla luce delle recenti delibera-zioni governative, sembra di intravedere l’uscita daltunnel.

Infatti, sulla Gazzetta Ufficiale del 27 agosto 2002,è stato pubblicato il decreto attuativo della LeggeObiettivo del dicembre 2001 che prevede, tra le ven-tuno grandi opere pubbliche da realizzare con uninvestimento di circa 85.000 miliardi di euro, ancheil Ponte sullo stretto di Messina.

I relativi lavori, come dichiarato dal MinistroLunardi, dovrebbero avere inizio nel secondo seme-stre del 2004, per essere completati in otto anni. Ilcosto previsto sfiora i cinque miliardi di euro.

È indispensabile però, affinché il Ponte possaindurre un notevole salto di qualità al sistema deitrasporti attraverso lo Stretto, attivare contestual-mente i cantieri per:

• l’adeguamento della rete stradale e autostradaleesistente che dovrà connettersi alla nuova struttura

• il potenziamento e l’ammodernamento dellerete ferroviaria in Sicilia

• condurre a termine i lavori relativi al completa-mento della rete autostradale siciliana

• l’ammodernamento dell’autostrada Salerno-Reggio Calabria.

Solo così operando sarà possibile creare una inte-grazione tra le due sponde rendendo utilmentesinergico il collegamento fisso sullo Stretto, sia con ilterritorio, e sia con le realtà che in esso operano.

In ordine poi agli effetti occupazionali che discen-deranno dalla costruzione del Ponte, si prevede l’im-piego di 5.000 unità per anno nei cantieri e di alme-no 9.000 nell’indotto che, ci auguriamo, sianosoprattutto costituite da maestranze siciliane e cala-bresi, atteso che il tasso di disoccupazione registratoin Sicilia e in Calabria nel 2001 era compreso tra21 e 25% contro il 10% della media nazionale.

Tutte le parti politiche, governo e opposizione,unitamente a quelle sociali, superando conflittualità

on December 17th 1971, Bill no. 1158 which authorisedthe building of a permanent road and railway linkbetween Sicily and the European continent; and overtwenty years have passed since the creation of the“Stretto di Messina s.p.a.”, the company which wasentrusted with the job of studying and planning theproject which to date has already cost over one hun-dred billion old Lire.

Years were spent waiting for news, although we werewell aware of the enormous technical, financial andpolitical difficulties that the Company wouldencounter. Years that have been also spent trying tounderstand.

Today, in view of the information we now have, fur-ther delays of any kind or nature which might putobstacles along the bridge’s technical-proceduralroute cannot be considered acceptable, especially bythe political parties, with no distinction, who insteadthrough their work in the correct institutional seatshave the duty to do their best to see that the dates andfinancing linked to the building of the bridge do notundergo changes and delays that might prejudice itscreation

Having overcome disputes and exploitations whichcaused delays with the consequent raising of costs, itseems today that in view of the recent decisions takenby the government we can see the light at the end ofthe tunnel.

In fact, on August 27th 2002 the Official Gazette pub-lished the decree of the Obiettivo Bill dated December2001 which also envisages, among twenty one othermajor works involving investments worth 85.000 bil-lion euros, the Bridge over the Straits of Messina.

Work on the bridge, as stated by Minister Lunardi,should start at the beginning of the second semester of2004, and be completed within eight years. Costs areconsidered at around five billion euros.

So that this Bridge can really improve the transportsystem across these Straits it is indispensable thatbuilding yards should be activated simultaneously for:

• Adapting the current roads and motorway networkwhich will link up with the new structure

• Improving and modernising the railway network inSicily

• Finishing the work for completing the Sicilianmotorway network

• Re-modernising the Salerno-Reggio Calabriamotorway.

It is only this way that it will be possible to createintegration between the two shores rendering usefullysynergic the permanent bridge over the Straits, bothintegrating the territory and the realities that existtherein.

As far as employment possibilities arising from thebuilding of this bridge are concerned, the employ-ment of 5.000 workers is envisaged for each year in thebuilding yards and at least 9000 in the induced activi-ties, and we hope that they will be mostly workers fromSicily and from Calabria in view of the fact that thelevel of unemployment registered in Sicily and inCalabria in 2001 was between 21 and 25% comparedto the national average of 10%.

e incomprensioni, hanno il dovere di ricercare inte-se e soluzioni praticabili che consentano loro dicogliere quanto di positivo potrà offrire l’occasionePonte, per cambiare volto e destino alla nostra real-tà socio economica.

Sappiamo che ciò non sarà facile ma fidiamomolto sulla civiltà e sul senso dello Stato della nostraclasse politica e di quella sociale.

La realizzazione dell’opera sarà affidata al“General Contractor”, nuova figura individuata perlegge, che assomma tutte le responsabilità della ese-cuzione dei lavori, del contenimento dei tempi dicostruzione e del coordinamento delle più utili ini-ziative per una corretta gestione complessiva delcomparto giuridico finanziario.

L’opera finita andrà in consegna all’Ente Gestore(in corso di individuazione), che ne curerà esercizioe manutenzione, con una previsione di impiegodiretto di circa 500 unità/anno, più altre 450 ope-ranti nell’indotto.

Ritengo utile poter ribadire che noi rotariani, ani-mati da spirito di servizio, continueremo a seguirecon interesse gli sviluppi operativi dell’iter che saràreso pubblico dall’Autorità preposta alla program-mazione e alla esecuzione delle opere, confermandofin da adesso, come detto in premessa, la disponibi-lità del Rotary International a fornire la più ampia efattiva collaborazione.

Il Ponte avvieràbenefici meccanismidi cambiamento chenon possono essere nèveloci nè immediatima che, se bene avvia-ti, comporteranno ricadute economiche di notevolevalore.

E perché queste possano essere reali occorre, tem-pestivamente:

• organizzare una campagna di informazionesull’utilità della nuova opera vista non soltanto comeun nuovo nastro asfaltato che congiunge due sitigeografici o come una nuova rete ferroviaria cheabbrevia i tempi di attraversamento dello Stretto, macome una opportunità offerta per far esploderenuovi interessi imprenditoriali oggi resi asfittici daun radicato convincimento culturale di tipo isolazio-nistico; incenivare le attività produttive in agricoltu-ra, avendo anche riguardo per quelle sperimen-tali e sub-tropicali ma anche quelle nel settore zoo-tecnico, favorite dalla possibilità offerta dal Pontesullo Stretto di penetrare più velocemente nei mer-cati del centro e del nord del nostro Paese, inquelli europei e, con i nuovi sistemi multimodali,anche in quelli che si affacciano sul Mediterraneo,sviluppando così un più razionale ed economicoscambio commerciale;

• attivare centri di formazione professionale tec-nico-economico specializzate nel settore della gestio-ne e dell’esercizio di grandi strutture;

• incoraggiare la costituzione di consorzi impren-ditoriali per adeguarsi alle nuove strategie costruttive;

• individuare nei piani regolatori delle aree urba-

All political parties, both in government and theopposition, together with the social parties, overcom-ing all conflicts and misunderstandings, have theduty to find agreements and practical solutions thatwill allow them to seize all the positive opportunitiesoffered by this Bridge, so as to change the aspect andthe destiny of our social-economical reality.

We know that it will not be easy but we place ourtrust in the civilisation and the sense of the State ofour political and social classes.

The actual building will be entrusted to a GeneralContractor, a new figure established by the law, whoassumes all responsibility for carrying out the work,for respecting the established dates and the coordi-nation of the more useful initiatives for correct over-all management of the juridical financial sector.

The finished work will be handed over to aManaging Body (now being chosen), which will beresponsible for running and managing the bridge withforeseeable employment of about 500 workers peryear, plus another 450 working in related sectors.

I believe that it is useful to emphasise that weRotarians, armed with our spirit of service, will con-tinue to follow with interest the operative develop-ments that will be made public by the Authorityresponsible for planning and carrying out the work,confirming as from now, as mentioned in the intro-

duction, Rotary Inter-national’s availability toprovide a broader andmore effective form ofcooperation.

This Bridge willbring about positive

changes that will be neither quick nor immediate, butthat if well-directed with involve considerable finan-cial benefits.

So that these may become realistic it is necessary toquickly:

Organize an information campaign concerningthe usefulness of the new bridge seen not only as anew route linking two geographical locations ora new railway network shortening the time it takes tocross the Straits, but as an opportunity that can bringabout an explosion of new entrepreneurial intereststhat today are suffocated by a deep-rooted isolationistculture; incentive agricultural productive activities,also taking into consideration experimental and sub-tropical kinds but also those used in the zoo-technicalsector, encouraged by the opportunities offered bythe new bridge for penetrating far more quickly themarkets in the north and the centre of Italy, theEuropean ones and also, thanks to the new multi-modal systems, also the markets that overlook theMediterranean, thereby developing more rationaland economic commercial exchanges;

• Activate centres for professional technical andeconomic formation specialised in the managementand the running of large structures;

• Encourage the creation of entrepreneurialgroups so as to adapt to new building strategies;

• Identify the areas in the plans for urban and sub-

Più che continuare con altre elencazioni forse èpiù utile concludere esprimendo il vivo compiaci-mento per l’avvio dell’iter che condurrà alla costru-zione di un Ponte che ci si augura rappresenti unaragione in più perché questa nostra Sicilia possaessere sempre più Sicilia e meno Sud come spessoindicata, con accenti non certo geografici, da chi hapaura del suo decollo turistico ed economico.

La cecità di amministratori che nei passati decen-ni non hanno saputo ottimizzare la naturale voca-zione di questa terra, e l’arroganza delittuosa di cen-tri del potere politico-economico del tempo votati,con illusorie promesse di benessere economico, acongelare la formazione di una vera coscienzaimprenditoriale, sono servite esclusivamente a impe-dire lo sviluppo globale nella nostra isola, pregiudi-cando la nascita del terzo polo turistico delMediterraneo la cui sede naturale doveva essere, edè ancora oggi, la nostra amata Sicilia malgrado Gela,Priolo, Augusta, Milazzo, le zone industriali delmilazzese, del cui degrado siamo vittime sacrificali, emalgrado anche le contestate istituende aree ad altorischio ambientale.

Anche se abbastanza note queste realtà, al pari ditante altre, meritano comunque l’attenta attenzionedi noi tutti ben coscienti che il futuro non si costrui-sce con i piagnistei ma con il coraggio di sapersiassumere le responsabilità civili e morali principal-mente quando si è parte attiva nei processi di cresci-ta civile e di sviluppo socio-economico.

Da siciliani, non più disponibili a tollerare scempie soprusi, abbiamo civilmente protestato e non cistancheremo di farlo nel caso dovessero esserearchitettati ulteriori tentativi di danneggiamento delnostro territorio, a prescindere dalla loro prove-nienza.

Il Ponte, come strumento di una grande strategiadi crescita civile, dovrebbe imporre riflessioni anchedi tipo sociale per scoraggiare sul nascere eventiprima indicati.

Ma noi guardiamo a questa nascente meravigliaper il grande contributo che dovrebbe dare invo-gliando e convogliando nuovi flussi turistici dalNord Europa alla Sicilia con maggiore speditezzache non esiste, per le attuali difficoltà dell’attraver-samento via mare, favorendo così il processo di cam-biamento auspicato che potrà dar luogo ad unonuovo sentire nella gestione dei beni naturali e delvastissimo patrimonio culturale che ci appartiene edei quali, noi siciliani, siamo naturali custodi.

E forse anche il Ponte ci aiuterà nel nostro nonfacile compito di tutela di tanta inestimabile ric-chezza, rendendola fruibile ed arricchendola connuovi apporti che facciano accrescere nell’animodei cittadini di questa Europa senza confini, ed inquelli del mondo, l’interesse per una Sicilia giàmatura a svolgere un ruolo di moderno propulsoredi crescita civile e convivenza pacifica.

Rather than continuing with more lists, it is per-haps more useful to conclude by expressing ourgreat pleasure for the starting of this project that willlead to the building of a Bridge that we hope repre-sents yet another reason for ensuring that this Sicilyof ours may become more Sicily and less the South asit is often called, using accents that are certainly notgeographical, by those who are afraid of the island’stourist and financial success.

The blindness of the managers who over the pastdecades were unable to optimise this land’s naturalvocation, and the criminal arrogance of the politicaland financial power centres of the times, determinedwith illusory promises of economic benefits to freezethe formation of a real entrepreneurial conscience,only served to prevent the global development of ourisland, jeopardising the creation of a third touristarea in the Mediterranean whose natural seat shouldhave been, and still is today, our beloved Sicily inspite of Gela, Priolo, Augusta, Milazzo, and theindustrial areas around the city. We are the sacrificialvictims of this degradation and also in spite of thefact that these areas have been indicated as being ata high risk as far as the environment is concerned.

Although they are quite well known, these realities,like many others, deserve however all our carefulattention, with the awareness that the future cannotbe created by whining but with the courage to assumeone’s civil and moral responsibilities especially whenone is an active participant in the process of civilisedgrowth and social and economic development.

As Sicilians, we will no longer tolerate destructionand abuse, we have protested in a civilised mannerand we shall not tire of doing so should furtherattempts be made to damage our territory, whereverthese attempts may come from.

The Bridge, as the tool of a great strategy forcivilised growth, should force reflection on mattersthat are also social so as to prevent the aforemen-tioned events from taking place.

But we look to this dawning wonder for the greatcontribution it should provide, encouraging andchannelling new flows of tourism from NorthernEurope to Sicily with greater speed, avoiding the cur-rent difficulties in crossing the Straits, encouragingthereby the process of hoped-for change which willbring about a new feeling for the management ofour nature and the immense cultural heritage thatbelongs to us and for which, we Sicilians are the nat-ural guardians.

Perhaps the Bridge will also help us in the difficultjob of protecting this priceless richness, making itusable and enriching it with new contributions thatwill allow an interest to grow in the souls of the citi-zens of this Europe without borders, and in those allover the world, for a Sicily that is already matureenough to play the role of a modern propellant forcivilised growth and peaceful cohabitation.

A GROUP OF YOUNG AUSTRALIANSVISIT OUR DISTRICT

Respecting the program set out by the RotaryFoundation’s study group exchanges this year too,our District hosted a group of young people offeringthem a chance to promote international understand-ing and peace through these cultural and profession-al exchanges.

The group consisted in four young Australians anda leader, Bruce Perri, a Rotarian from Goondiwindi,

who acted as group leader.The members of this group

were 28 year old Allison Beasley,a science teacher; Peter Venz a29 year old police officer; DeanMurphy, a 37 year old headmas-ter and 37 year old Scott Gollanwho works in a bank.

There were programmed vis-its to clubs in Palermo, Trapani,Alcamo Marsala, Castelvetrano,

Salemi, Mazara del Vallo, Sciacca, Agrigento, Licata,Caltanissetta, Piazza Armerina, Catania, Taormina,Messina, Siracusa, and Noto.

As mentioned the objective of this program is todevelop professional abilities and leader talents inyoung women and men during the early years of theirprofessional lives so as to prepare them to better facethe issues presented by their communities and by thelabour world in an increasingly Globalised perspec-tive.

A 4 to 6 week exchange is sufficient for this kind ofexperience; each occasion was an opportunity forpaying great attention to their professional activities,their cultural experiences, friendship opportunities andopportunities for Rotarian commitment.

They admired the beauty in Sicily but also visitedschools, hospitals, industries, public offices, allowingthem to compare our realities with their own.

It was an unforgettable and fascinating experiencethat will certainly remain in their hearts and in theirminds and also gave us a great deal.

We must applaud the clubs that hosted them aswell as their respective presidents who, with greatenthusiasm, made their stay in our country pleasantand exciting.

The Australians sent their best wishes to allRotarians and as soon as they returned home, they

wished once again to thank their Sicilian friends, andespecially Governor Carlo Marullo di Condojanni,for allowing them to enjoy this unique and extraordi-nary experience.

VISITA DEI GIOVANI AUSTRALIANIAL NOSTRO DISTRETTO

Anche quest’anno il nostro Distretto, rispettandoil programma dello Scambio dei gruppi di Studiodella Rotary Foundation, ha ospitato un gruppo digiovani offrendo loro la possibilità di promuovere lacomprensione internazionale e la pace, attraversotale scambio di carattere culturale e professionale.

Il gruppo era formato da 4 giovani australiani eda un leader Bruce Perri, rotariano di Goondiwindi,con funzioni di capo gruppo.

Questi i componenti delgruppo: Allison Beasley, 28anni, insegnante di scienze;Peter Venz 29 anni, ufficiale dipolizia; Dean Murphy, 37 annipreside di scuola e Scott Gollan,37 anni bancario.

Tale programma è finalizzato, come anzidetto, asviluppare le attitudini professionali e le doti di guidadi giovani uomini e donne, nei loro primi anni di vitaprofessionale, per prepararli ad affrontare meglio iproblemi delle loro comunità e del mondo del lavo-ro in una prospettiva sempre più avanzata di globa-lizzazione.

Uno scambio di 4-6 settimane è sufficiente a fareesperienze di questo tipo; in ogni occasione si è fattamolta attenzione a curare particolarmente le loro atti-vità professionali, le esperienze culturali, le opportunitàd’amicizia e le possibilità di coinvolgimento rotariano.

Hanno ammirato le bellezze della Sicilia, mahanno anche visitato scuole, ospedali, industrie, uffi-ci pubblici, con la possibilità di confrontare la nostracon la loro realtà.

Un’esperienza indimenticabile e affascinante cherimarrà sicuramente nel loro cuore e nella loromemoria e che anche a noi ha dato tanto.

Un plauso va ai clubs che li hanno ospitati e airispettivi Presidenti che, con tanto entusiasmo,hanno reso piacevole ed emozionante il loro soggior-no nella nostra terra. A tutti i Rotariani và il salutocordiale degli Australiani che, non appena tornati a

casa, hanno sentito il desiderio di ringraziare ancoragli amici siciliani, con in testa il loro GovernatoreCarlo Marullo di Condojanni, che hanno permessoloro di fare questa esperienza unica e straordinaria.

XXV CONGRESSO DISTRETTUALEDISTRETTO 2110 - SICILIA E MALTA

“Rotary & Mediterraneo: Turismo, ambiente, cul-tura”: questo il tema che ha ispirato i lavori del XXVCongresso del Distretto 2110 - Sicilia e Malta delRotary International, l’atto più importante e conclu-sivo dell’anno rotariano in corso. Dal 16 al 18 mag-gio, nelle sale dell’hotel Ramada di Giardini Naxos,

presenti 61 delegazioni in rappresentanza di altret-tanti club, provenienti dalle due isole, si è svolto ilcongresso secondo un articolato programma, conl’attuale governatore, professore Carlo Marullo diCondojanni e i suoi collaboratori diretti, l’istruttoredistrettuale professore Maurizio Triscari e il respon-sabile della segreteria, ingegnere Salvo Sarpietro,impegnati nelle attività che si sono svolte tra l’hotel diGiardini e il Palazzo dei congressi di Taormina. Dopo gli inni e la sfilata dei labari, il presidente delclub di Taormina dott. Achille Conti ha porto i salutidi benvenuto.

“Questa manifestazione annuale – ha detto – serveper verificare l’azione rotariana condotta da tutti iclub in un anno, ma anche e soprattutto per proget-tare e guardare al futuro, perché dal confronto nasca-no sempre nuovi spunti di azione per il nostro distret-to. È stato un anno di lavoro intenso ed entusiasta,testimoniato dalla partecipazione vera e appassionatadi tutti i rotariani di Sicilia e Malta a questo congres-so”. L’arcivescovo di Messina mons. “Rotary & the Mediterranean: Tourism, the envi-ronment, culture”: this was the theme that inspiredthe work of 25th Congress for Rotary International’sDistrict 2110 – Sicily and Malta, the most importantand conclusive work in the current Rotarian year.From May 16th to the 18th, in the salons of theRamada Giardini Naxos Hotels, with 61 delegationsrepresenting as many clubs coming from the twoislands, the congress followed a well-constructedprogram. Current Governor Professor CarloMarullo di Condojanni and his close staff, as well asDistrict Instructor Professor Maurizio Triscari andMr. Salvo Sarpietro responsible for the secretariat,were involved in all activities between the GiardiniHotel and the Taormina Congress building. After the hymns and the banner parade Mr. AchilleConti, President of the Taormina Club held theopening welcome speech.

“This yearly event – he said – is needed to verifythe Rotarian work of all clubs in the course of a year,but also and above all to plan and look to thefuture, because comparisons always lead to newideas for action in our District. This has been anintense and enthusiastic year’s work, witnessed bythe real and passionate participation in this con-gress of all Rotarians in Sicily and Malta”. The exhibition of the Rotarian objects andits respective catalogue as well as the publication onRotarian awards were very successful. During thisCongress PDG Benedetto Aldo Timineri also pre-sented the minutes of the Agrigento Congress.District acknowledgements and the Paul HarrisFellow were also awarded, this is the most importantRotarian award established in honour of one of the

Sono stati assegnati altri riconoscimen-ti, come il Premio Vadalà, a soggetti anche non rota-riani che si sono distinti in particolari attività umani-tarie (quest’anno è andato ad una suora, MadreGiorgina, per la sua importante azione umanitariasvolta in Romania); ed il premio della FondazioneSciascia, per meriti conseguiti nell’ambito dell’edito-ria. Al termine dei lavori e della cena di gala i parte-cipanti al congresso hanno assistito a uno spettacolodi “pupi siciliani” curato dalla famiglia Napoli. Tregenerazioni di pupari di scuola catanese, famosi nelmondo, guidati dalla saggezza e dall’esperienza dellasignora Italia, che continuano, oggi,un’arte le cui radici si perdono neltempo passato.

Domenica, dopo la celebrazionedella Santa Messa officiata dal sacer-dote rotariano padre Calascione,nella chiesa di Santa Caterinad’Alessandria a Taormina, il Con-gresso si è spostato al Palazzo dei con-gressi per l’atto conclusivo dell’incon-tro distrettuale.

Other speakers included: Mario Bevacqua, vice-president of Uftaa which unites all travel agents atinternational level, on “the Mediterranean: a touristproject”, Eugenio Dauria, plenipotentiary Ministerfor the Foreign Office, on “Mediterranean prospectsfor the E.U.’s Italian presidency”, Giuseppe Gioia,past director international, on “Enlarging the Cee,agriculture and the Mediterranean”, Dario Mozzi,musical critic, on “Music in the Mediterranean: acultural crossroads”, Mordehay Rodgold, economicaffairs advisor for the Israeli Embassy in Rome, on“Israeli economy and economic relations betweenIsrael and Italy: opportunities for Sicily”.

UN PICCOLO MONDO CHIAMATOINTERACT

E così, quattro anni sono trascorsi! Avevo solo 16anni quando sono “entrato” per la prima volta nelmondo Interact e ci sono rimasto fino ad ora che neho 20. E come di consueto alla fine di ogni percorso sitirano le somme.

L’operazione non è certo semplice perché, se permolti quattro anni possono sembrare pochi, per menon lo sono stati affatto, considerando inoltre chequesti sono stati gli anni della mia crescita e quindinon potrò mai dimenticarli per il semplice fatto che lamia personalità più adulta e matura si è proprio for-mata in quest’ultimo periodo, nel quale trova un postodi rilievo l’attività svolta all’interno dell’Interact.Quest’ultimo inteso come luogo d’incontro, dialogo eresponsabilità.Tante sono le persone (del Rotary,Rotaract ed Interact) che in questi anni ho conosciutoe non poche sono quelle da cui ho tratto tanti inse-gnamenti o esempi di vita o ancora quelle da cui ènata un’amicizia. Ma a questo piccolo mondo appar-tengono anche dei doveri, delle responsabilità a cuinon puoi sottrarti. Quando ricopri una carica comequella di presidente, RD, ...sai di esserti assunto delleresponsabilità a cui devi adempiere nel migliore deimodi, perchè tante persone hanno riposto in te la lorofiducia. Posso ritenermi più che soddisfatto perchè inquesti anni ho ricoperto la carica di presidente delclub di Palermo e ora quella di rappresentante deldistretto 2110. Grande è stata l’eredità lasciatami daigovernatori che mi hanno preceduto e altrettantogrande è stato il sostegno di quei rotariani e rotarac-tiani che credono fermamente nell’Interact. In que-st’anno sociale, in particolare, si è svolto il primo con-gresso nazionale Interact a San Remo il 25-26-27Aprile, preceduto da diversi incontri di noi RDd’Italia, per conoscerci meglio ed organizzare adegua-tamente il forum.

La vita di questo piccolo mondo chiamato Interactdunque continua ad andare avanti, arricchendosianno dopo anno sempre di più. Un piccolo mondobasato su principi e valori semplici e genuini come l’a-micizia e la solidarietà, i quali a differenza di quantomolti pensano sono ancora vivi nei cuori dei giovani.

A SMALL WORLD CALLEDINTERACT

And so four years have gone by! I was only sixteenyears old when for the first time I “entered” theInteract world and there I remained until today, andI am now 20. As always at the end of any route onebalances matters.

This is not a simple calculation, because, while formany four years may sound like a short period, as faras I am concerned they weren’t at all short, also con-sidering that during these years I have grown up andtherefore I will never forget these years simply due tothe fact that my more adult and mature personalitywas formed during this same period, during whichmy activities within Interact played an important role.Interact understood as a place for encounters, dia-logue and responsibility.

I have met many people during these years(belonging to the Rotary, Rotaract and Interact) andmany of them taught me a great deal and have beenexamples to follow or even become friends. But thissmall world also involves duties, responsibilities thatcannot be ignored. When you hold a position such asthat of president, DR, ...you know that you haveassumed responsibilities that must be faced in thebest possible way, because so many people haveplaced their trust in you. I consider myself more thansatisfied because during these years I have held theposition of Club president in Palermo and now thatof representative for District 2110. I received a greatlegacy from Governors who preceded me and equal-ly great support from those Rotarians and membersof Rotaract who strongly believe in the Interact.During this social year, in particular, the first Interactnational congress was held in San Remo on April 25-26-27, preceded by various meetings with Italian DRsso as to get to know each other better and organisethe Forum adequately.

Life in the small world called Interact thereforecontinues to progress, increasingly enriched yearafter year. A small world based on simple and gen-uine principles and values such as friendship and sol-idarity, which contrary to the beliefs of many are stillalive in the hearts of the young.

L’IDEA DI SERVICE REGIONALE PERL’ANNO 2002-2003

Essa, come tutti i progetti, nasce dalla proposta diuna singola persona. Se tale proposta possiede unfondamento concreto, la si perfeziona insiemeall’aiuto di coloro che la reputano valida.

Questo è quello che abbiamo cercato di faredurante questi mesi grazie al sostegno pratico emorale della professoressa Di Franco presidente delFondo Siciliano per la Natura (Associazone ambien-talista di respiro regionale) e del dott. Carlo Manzopresidente della SIDRA (Società idrica ambientaleCatania), i quali con entusiasmo e numerose ideehanno deciso di aiutarci.

L’iniziativa, che gode dei patrocini della RegioneSiciliana, dei Comuni, delle Province Regionali, e diquello del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione,riguarda l’ambiente ed è stato denominato “Rotaractfor enviroment”, si articola in più sezioni che voglio-no dare ai singoli soci la possibilità d’interagire conesso in diverse maniere

Il progetto, partito ufficial-mente il 28 ottobre con unaconferenza stampa che si ètenuta a Catania su una nave, la“Partenope” della Navigerum,ha visto la sua conclusionesabato 3 maggio.

In tutte le più importantipiazze siciliane si è svolta unafesta per l’ambiente con tuttele scuole elementari e medie(...più di 70!!) che sono state “adottatte” dai 38 clubrotaract presenti sul territorio siciliano. Sin da gen-naio i Rotaractiani di Sicilia hanno infatti portato l’e-ducazione ambientale nelle classi da loro seguiteattraverso un opuscolo informativo realizzato efinanziato dal Distretto 2110 Sicilia-Malta, stampatoin settemila copie da distribuire a tutte le scuole sici-liane che hanno aderito al progetto. Tale opuscolocontiene tra le altre cose alcuni giochi sull’ambientee due favole ecologiche scritte dagli stessi rotaractia-ni.

Con l’aiuto di insegnanti, responsabili del proget-to nelle varie classi e dei membri del Fondo Sicilianoper la Natura, abbiamo sollecitato i ragazzi a realiz-zare elaborati che manifestassero il loro interesse inmerito ai vari temi ambientali trattati. L’ idea di baseè quella di fornire cultura ambientale: molti di voiconosceranno il significato della frase “svilupposostenibile”. In breve: “bisogna cercare di lasciare ainostri figli un ambiente che sia in condizioni nonpeggiori di come ce lo hanno lasciato i nostri padri”.

Inutile illudersi di poterlo lasciare in condizionimigliori. Ma anche per poter ottenere questo mini-mo, è necessario lavorare per sviluppare la sensibili-tà ambientale.

Abbiamo voluto quindi fare informazioneambientale attraverso una campagna di sensibilizza-

Like all projects, this idea originates from the ideaof one individual. If such an idea should prove to bebasically realistic, it will be perfected with the help ofthose who consider it valid.

This is what we have attempted to do over thesepast months thanks to the practical and moral sup-port of professor Di Franco president of the SicilianFund for Nature (a regional environmental associa-tion) and of Mr. Carlo Manzo President of SIDRA (aCatania based environmental hydrological company)who decided to help us with enthusiasm and manyideas.

This initiative, under the patronage of the SicilianRegion, the Municipalities, the Regional provinces,and that of the Ministry for Education, which con-cerns the environment and has been entitled“Rotaract for the environment”, is divided into anumber of sectors permitting individual members to

interact with the project in avariety of manners

The project was officiallylaunched on October 28thwith a press conference heldin Catania on a ship calledthe “Partenope” belonging toNavigerum, and ended onSaturday May 3rd.

An event in honour of theenvironment was held in themost important city squares

in Sicily with the participation of primary and middleschools (...over 70!!) “adopted” by the 38 Rotaractclubs present in Sicily. As from January the SicilianRotaract members in fact took environmental educa-tion into the classrooms they were involved withthanks to a informative booklet published andfinanced by District 2110 Sicily – Malta, printed inseven thousand copies to be distributed in all theSicilian schools which had enrolled in this project.This booklet also contains a number of environmen-tal games and two environmental fairytales written byRotaract members themselves.

With help from teachers, those responsible for theproject in the various classes and from the membersof the Sicilian Fund for Nature, we encouraged stu-dents to write papers expressing their interest regardsto the various environmental subjects discussed. Thebasic idea was to provide environmental culture:many of you know the meaning of the words “sus-tainable development”. Briefly: “we must try andleave our children an environment that is not inworse condition than how our fathers left it to us”.

There is no point in deluding ourselves that wecan leave it to them in better conditions. But evenobtaining this minimum requirement involves neces-sary work so as to develop environmental sensitivity.

Hence we decided to provide information about

A Catania il progetto Rotaract for environment,che gode tra l’altro del patrocinio della RegioneSiciliana e dell’Assessorato alle politche scolastichedi Catania si è concluso presso la Villa Bellini.

Qui i soci dei club Rotaract di Paternò, AetnaNord-Ovest, Catania, Catania Est, Catania Ovest eCatania Nord, insieme con gli animatori diSorrisolandia e i membri dell’associazione FondoSiciliano per la Natura hanno coinvolto in una gran-de festa per l’ambiente le diverse classi delle scuolecatanesi che hanno aderito al progetto.

Durante la mattinata sono stati esposti tutti i lavo-ri (temi, poesie, lavori d’arte con materiale riciclato)realizzati dai bambini stessi.

Tutte le scuole ed i loro insegnanti sono stati pre-miati con un una coppa.

Alla giornata sono intervenuti: l’Assessore allepolitiche scolasticheFatuzzo, il rappresen-tante distrettuale Rota-ract 2110 Sicilia eMalta Antonio Condo-relli, la presidentessadel Fondo Sicilianoper la Natura prof.ssaDi Franco Lino.

Durante la mattina-ta di festa sono statevendute in tutta laSicilia delle piantinedi Calendula il cuiricavato servirà a fi-nanziare la realizzazione di aree verdi nelle diverseprovince della nostra Regione. L’obiettivo è quellodi lasciare un segno tangibile, anche se piccolo, sulterritorio interagendo con le singole realtà comuna-li. Realizzare piccoli spazi verdi attraverso l’interazio-ne con comuni, dando visibilità all’assocazione enello stesso tempo entrando in contatto con lepubliche amministrazioni. Rendendo così bonifica-bili aree che altrimenti sarebbero rimaste inutilizza-te, o rivalutando zone antistanti a monumenti diinteresse pubblico. I club si sono impegnati al repe-rimento dei fondi necessari aiutati anche dalleamministrazioni comunali e da sponsorizzazioniprivate.

In questi giorni si sta completando anche il ciclodi conferenze divise per area, che affrontano temati-che di diverso contenuto, in base alla zona di inte-resse. Le zone in Sicilia sono sei ed i temi trattativanno dall’erosione delle coste di Agrigento, all’im-patto ambientale del Ponte di Messina, passando peril problema dell’acqua a Catania e così via.

Tali conferenze che godono della presenza di rela-tori specialisti nei diversi campi, vogliono rivolgersi,ovviamente, ad un pubblico rotariano ed universita-rio, permettendo di sensibilizzare anche gli adulti aiproblemi ambientali.

In Catania the Rotaract project for environment,also under the patronage of the Sicilian Region andthe Catania Town Council for educational policiesdrew to an end at Villa Bellini.

Here Rotaract members from Paternò, AetnaNorth-West, Catania, Catania East, Catania West andCatania North, together with entertainers fromSorrisolandia and members of the Sicilian Fund forNature Association organised a great event for cele-brating the environment involving all the classes inCatania that had enrolled in this project.

During the morning all the work created by thechildren themselves was exhibited (essays, poetry,works of art created using recycled materials).

All schools and teachers were rewarded with acup.

The Councillor foreducational policiesMr. Fatuzzo, the Rota-ract District represen-tative for District 2110Sicily and Malta Mr.Antonio Condorelli,and the President ofthe Sicilian Fund forNature Mrs. Di FrancoLino were also pres-ent.

During this festivemorning small Calen-dula plants were sold

all over Sicily and the proceeds used to finance the cre-ation of green areas in various provinces in ourRegion. The objective is to leave a tangible, althoughsmall mark on the territory by interacting with singlemunicipal realities; creating small green areas by inter-acting with the communes, providing the associationwith visibility and at the same time getting in touchwith public administrations. This will renderreclaimable areas that otherwise would have remainedunused and will also exploit areas surrounding monu-ments of public interest. Clubs are committed to find-ing the necessary resources helped also by municipaladministrations and private sponsors.

At the moment a cycle of conferences dividedinto areas is being completed, these conferences dis-cuss a variety of subjects depending on the areas inwhich they are held. There are six areas in Sicily andthe subjects range from the erosion of the costs nearAgrigento, the environmental impact caused by theMessina Bridge, and the problems caused by the lackof water in Catania and so on.

These conferences, honoured by the presence ofspeakers who are experts in various fields, are obvi-ously addressed to a Rotarian and university audi-ence, permitting the sensitisation of adults too asregard to environmental problems.

Il Distretto Rotaract 2110,come ogni anno, è impegna-to anche sul piano nazionale.

Gli sforzi di tutti i Rotaractd’Italia sono stati indirizzati verso un disegnoRotariano molto ambizioso, portato avanti a livellomondiale. Sono stati raccolti fondi per il ProgettoPolio Plus.

In breve, il Rotary International si è impegnatoattraverso l’azione di tutti i club del mondo a debel-lare una malattia devastante e invalidante come laPoliomielite, il tutto entro il 2005, centenario dellanascita del Rotary. E’ un impegno che è stato preso14 anni fa e che va rispettato.

Il nostro Distretto aveva già deciso di intraprende-re un’azione verso la Polio Plus, attraverso la venditadi magliette e cravatte. Quando se ne è presentata l’oc-casione tale iniziattiva è stata sottoposta all’attenzio-ne degli altri nove R.R.D. italiani, che, ritenendolavalida, la hanno appoggiata con entusiasmo. Ed ècosì che un impegno a carattere regionale è diventa-to anche di rilevanza nazionale.

L’idea era quella di effettuare una raccolta fondicon modalità differenti a seconda delle regioni macon un’unica identità di immagine e di promozioneattraverso i mass-media della nostra associazione intutta Italia.

L’accordo interdistrettuale, raggiunto solo a otto-bre, ha visto il 2110 quale distretto promotore, impe-gnato nella campagna pubblicitaria per il progetto“Rotaract Italia aiuta Polio Plus”, realizzando lo slogane le locandine che hanno pubblicizzato l’iniziativa intutta la penisola attraverso trasmissioni di rilevanzanazionale quali: Quelli che il Calcio (Rai2) e Striscia laNotizia (Canale 5) e diverse testate giornalisticheregionali, sottoponendo così il Rotaract all’attenzio-ne dell’opinione pubblica.

L’iniziativa ha inoltre ricevuto il plauso ed il soste-gno degli attuali Governatori Rotariani e di moltiPast Governor tra cui spicca la figura di Giuseppe Finidel Distretto Rotary 2070.

Gli sforzi profusi dai dieci distretti rotaractiani sisono concretizzati venerdì 25 aprile 2003 aCastellaneta Marina (Taranto) durante il congressonazionale Rotaract.

I Rappresentanti Distrettuali hanno infatti conse-gnato ai Governatori dei distretti Rotariani presentiai lavori un assegno di settantamila euro frutto della

As every year RotaractDistrict 2110 is also commit-

ted at national level.The efforts of all the

Italian Rotaract clubs have been addressed to a veryambitious Rotarian project implemented all overthe world.

Funds in fact have been collected for the PolioPlus Project.

To put it briefly, Rotary International is commit-ted with the help of clubs all over the world to theeradication of a devastating and invalidating diseasesuch as Poliomyelitis within the year 2005, the cen-tenary of the foundation of the Rotary.

This commitment was addressed 14 years ago andmust be respected.

Our District had already decided to take action infavour of Polio Plus, by selling tee-shirts and ties.Whenever the occasion arose this initiative was pre-sented to the attention of the other nine ItalianR.R.Ds. which, considering it worthwhile, supportedit enthusiastically.

This was how a regional commitment alsoassumed national importance.

The idea was to organise fund-raising in differentways depending on the region but preserving oneunique identity for image and promotion in ourassociation’s mass-media all over Italy.

The inter-district agreement reached only inOctober, saw 2110 as the promoting district,involved in the advertising campaign for the projectcalled “Rotaract Italy helps Polio Plus”, creating theslogan and the leaflets that sponsored this initiativeall over the peninsula in TV programs of nationalimportance such as: Quelli che il Calcio (Rai2) andStriscia la Notizia (Canale 5) as well as in manyregional newspapers bringing Rotaract to the atten-tion of public opinion.

This initiative was also praised and supported bycurrent Rotarian Governors and many PastGovernors, and among them the figure of GiuseppeFini from Rotary District 2070 stands out.

Guido Abate DistrettoRotary 2070, il quale ha relazionatosulla costituzione del primo clubrotaract in Italia e del dott. MurrayMylechreest Past Governor DistrictRotary 1100 Presidente RIBI RotaractWorking Party 2002-2004, che ha sot-toposto all’attenzione dell’assembleale nuove proposte di modifica alregolamento internazionale delRotaract.

DECISIONI DEL BOARD

Il Consiglio Centrale (Board of Directors) delRotary International, riunitosi nel febbraio scorso,ha preso una serie di decisioni che sottolineano l'im-portanza del service, della formazione rotariana edella comunicazione via Internet.

Il Board esorta i distretti e i club a intraprendereiniziative a favore dell'ambiente e dei disabili, conti-nuando a promuovere programmi di alfabetizzazio-ne e competenza matematica.

Esso chiede inoltre ai club rotariani di coinvolgerequelli Interact nei progetti per il Centenario e inco-raggia questi ultimi a intraprendere iniziative in pro-prio in vista di questa ricorrenza.

Per il miglioramento dell'immagine del Rotaract,il Board suggerisce ai club interessati di evidenziaredeterminati aspetti del programma, come i contribu-ti volontari, l'azione d'interesse pubblico e quellainternazionale, le partnership con i club rotariani ele attività di formazione professionale e di sviluppodelle doti di leadership. I1 Board ha inoltre appro-vato un progetto pilota di tre anni per lo sviluppo dicyberclub Rotaract.

Il Board esorta i club e i distretti a servirsidell'Internet per la promozione e la pubblicizzazionedelle loro attività e dei notiziari di club, della stampae di altri sbocchi pubblicitari per la promozione deiloro siti Web. Per garantire che tutti i Rotarianiabbiano una conoscenza approfondita dei program-mi del RI e della Fondazione, il Board consiglia aiclub di dedicare una riunione al mese esclusivamen-te a informazioni e aggiornamenti di questo genere.

addition to the presence of mostRotarian Governors, was also hon-oured by speeches among others byMr. Franceso Giorgino, JournalistTG1 (Rotaract District representa-tive 1988-89 Puglia - Basilicata-Campania - Calabria), by Mr. GuidoAbate Rotary district 2070 who spokeabout the founding of the firstRotaract Club in Italy and by Mr.Murray Mylechreest, Past GovernorDistrict Rotary 1100 and President ofthe RIBI Rotaract Working Party 2002-2004, who drew to the attention ofthe assembly the new proposals formodifying the Rotaract’s interna-tional rules.

BOARD ENCAURAGES SERVICE, AWARENESS

At its February 2003 meeting, the RotaryInternational Board of Directors took actions thatuplifted service, Rotary education and outreach, andcommunication via the Internet.

The Board encouraged clubs and districts toundertake environmental projects, meet the needsof people with disabilities, and continue to empha-size literacy and numeracy projects. It asked

Rotary clubs to involve their Interact clubs in theircentennial community projects and encouragedInteract clubs to develop their own service projectsin honor of Rotary’s centennial.

To enhance the image of Rotaract, the Board sug-gested Rotaract j clubs highlight such programaspects as voluntary contributions, community andinternational service, partnerships with Rotary clubs,and professional and leadership development activi-ties. The Board also approved a three-year Rotaractcyberclub pilot project.

The Board encouraged Rotary clubs and districtsto use the Internet j to promote and publicize serviceactivities, and it requested clubs, districts, and zonesto consider promoting their Web sites by posting ;their addresses in a variety of ways, including onhighway signs and I in newspaper advertisements andclub literature.

With the goal of expanding Rotarians’ knowledgeof RI and Rotary j Foundation programs, the Boardadvised clubs of the advantages of devoting a regularmeeting each month exclusively to imparting Rotaryinformation, Rotary education, and leadership train-ing. In another action, the Board lifted its moratori-um on extension activities in Uzbekistan.

Si è svolto a Pergusa il 3° seminario dedicato allaformazione dei nuovi soci di quest’anno rotariano,formazione che, ormai, è diventata particolarmenteimportante per lo sviluppo dell’azione rotariana.

Il corso è stato tenuto dall’istruttore distrettualeMaurizio Triscari, dal coordinatore della segreteriadistrettuale Salvo Sarpietro, dall’assistente delGovernatore Alfio Di Costa.

Nel pomeriggio il governatore designatoFerdinando Testoni Blasco ha incontrato tutti i presi-denti del suo anno per una presa di contatto, ed ilgovernatore in carica Carlo Marullo di Condojanniha relazionato sulle celebrazioni del centenario, dis-tribuendo, poi, ai presenti un CD rom contenenteinformazioni, immagini e sussidi per i Club, in vistadelle manifestazioni del centenario della nascita delRotary, ed una card con il sito del Centenario.

IL DISTRETTO CRESCE

Il Governatore Carlo Marullo di Condojanni hadato notizia della nascita di quattro nuovi Club, inattesa delle carte, che vanno ad unirsi ai 61 esistenti.

ASSEMBLEA DEL ROTARACT A MARSALA

Nei giorni 7 e 8 giugno ha avuto luogo a Marsalal’assemblea del Rotaract alla quale è intervenuto ilGovernatore del Rotary, complimentandosi con ilrappresentante distrettuale uscente e formulando gliauguri a quello nuovo. Sono stati altresì presenti iGovernatori Incoming ed Eletto del Distretto 2110.

PUBBLICAZIONI

Il nostro Distretto, in collaborazione con l’IstitutoItaliano dei Castelli sezione Sicilia, ha affidato allaFondazione Sciascia per la pubblicazione il volumedal titolo”Atlante delle città fortificate di Sicilia eMalta”.

Si tratta della proiezione siciliana e maltese delcatalogo edito dai Governatori italiani del RotaryInternational “Mura da salvare”; con particolare rife-rimento ai centri importanti e minori, ancora oggiper nulla o poco studiati.

TRAINING SEMINARY FOR NEW MEMBERS

The 3rd Seminary for the training of New Memberswho joined during this Rotarian year was held inPergusa. This initiative has now become particularlyimportant for the development of Rotarian action.

The course was held by District instructorMaurizio Triscari, by the coordinator for the Districtsecretariat Salvo Sarpietro, and by the Governor’sassistant Alfio Di Costa.

During the afternoon Governor appointedFerdinando Testoni Blasco met all the presidents forhis year for a first exchange of ideas; currentGovernor Carlo Marullo di Condojanni reported onthe celebrations for the centenary, distributing thento those present a CD Rom containing information,images and material for clubs, in view of events forthe centenary of Rotary’s foundation, as well as a cardindicating the Centenary’s website.

THE DISTRICT IS GROWING

During the Congress, Governor Carlo Marullo diCondojanni announced the creation of four new Clubs,waiting the card which now join the 61 existing.

The 7th and 8th June, in Marsala during theAssembly of Rotaract the Governor of Rotary con-gratulated the Past District rappresentative and wishthe new District rappresentative.

PUBLICATION

Our District, in cooperation with the IstitutoItaliano dei Castelli sezione Sicilia, has entrusted theSciascia Foundation with the publication of the bookentitled “Atlas of fortified cities in Sicily and Malta”.

This is a Sicilian and Maltese continuation of thecatalogue published by the Italian Governors belong-ing to the Rotary International and entitled “Walls tobe saved”, with particular reference to important andminor towns that for the moment have either notbeen studied at all or have received little attention.

Lunedì 17 marzo, in una serata interclub deiRotary catanesi, con la partecipazione dei Club del-l’area etnea, all’Hotel Excelsior di Catania, è statoconsegnato il “Premio 4 Canti” ad EmanueleScammacca del Murgo, rotariano del Club CataniaEst, vincitore dell’edizione 2002-2003.

Il “4 Canti”, giunto al suo secondo anno di vita, èstato istituito nell’anno rotariano 2001-2002 per ini-ziativa di 4 past-president dei Rotary Club della cittàdi Catania (Antonio Calcara, Gabriele Fardella,Gaetano Pirrone, Ferdinando Testoni Blasco), quale”riconoscimento a rotariani dell’area etnea che conla propria opera abbiano onorato la terra di Sicilia”.

Quest’anno la giuria, composta dal Governatorepro-tempore del 2110 Distretto Sicilia e Malta, CarloMarullo di Condojanni, dal P.D.G. INCONTRO COL PROF. ZICHICHI

Nell’Auditorium della Facoltà di Lettere eFilosofia, Monastero dei Benedettini, si è svolto ininterclub tra i Rotary Club di Catania Nord, CataniaEst e Catania Ovest, dopo il saluto dei rispettivi presi-denti dott. Benedetto Santoro, dott. SalvatoreBonaventura e prof. Giansalvo Sciacchitano, un inte-ressante incontro con il prof. Antonio Zichichi,Presidente della Federazione Mondiale degliScienziati e del Centro di Cultura Scientifica “ EttoreMajorana” di Erice. Erano presenti il governatore delDistretto Carlo Marullo di Condojanni, autorità rota-riane e numerosi ospiti tra cui una delegazione rota-riana proveniente dall’Australia.

Il prof. Antonio Zichichi ha incentrato i suoi studie la sua ricerca sulla scoperta dell’antimateria, suicampi magnetici e sulla misura della particelle fonda-mentali. La sua interessante conversazione ai Rotary,dove il prof. Gaspare Rodolico è stato salutato comeantico amico d’infanzia, ha preso il via dalla conside-razione sui tempi in cui viviamo, dove il terrorismo hacome radici la crisi culturale, tempi in cui la logica ari-stotelica sembra non fare parte della nostra cultura ed

At the Hotel Excelsior in Catania on MondayMarch 17th, during an interclub soirée for the CataniaRotary clubs, with the participation of those from theEtna area, the “4 Canti Prize” was awarded toEmanuele Scammacca del Murgo, a Rotarian fromthe East Catania Club, winner of the 2002-2003 edi-tion.

The “4 Canti”, now in its second year, was createdduring the 2001-2002 Rotarian year by 4 past-presi-dents of the Rotary Clubs in the city of Catania(Antonio Calcara, Gabriele Fardella, GaetanoPirrone, and Ferdinando Testoni Blasco), as an”acknowledgement to Rotarians in the Etna area whohave honoured the land of Sicily with their work”.

This year the jury, which included Governor pro-tempore of District 2110 Sicily and Malta, CarloMarullo di Condojanni, P.D.G. Giuseppe ConigliaroMacca, Catania Rotary Club presidents pro-temporeSalvatore Bonaventura, Biagio Guardabasso,Benedetto Santoro, Giansalvo Sciacchitano as well asthe 4 past presidents who set-up this award, unani-mously awarded the “4 Canti prize” to EmanueleScammacca del Murgo, “for having created the SanMichele di Santa Venerina wine company, uniting theRotarian spirit and entrepreneurial initiative, provid-ing jobs for many Sicilians and promoting the devel-opment of the territory”.

The presentation of the Award once again empha-sised, also beyond Club activity, the Rotarian ideal toserve and its image linked to the acknowledgementof values that in realty result in an improvement ofthe territory Rotary operates in and returning digni-ty to an area in need of trust, tenacity, and coura-geous and farsighted initiatives.

A MEETING WITH PROFESSOR ZICHICHI

An inter-club meeting for the Catania North,Catania East and Catania West Rotary Clubs was held inthe Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities at theBenedictine Monastery. After welcome speeches by thethree presidents, Mr. Benedetto Santoro, Mr. SalvatoreBonaventura and Professor Giansalvo Sciacchitano, aninteresting meeting took place with Professor AntonioZichichi, President of the World Federation of Scientistand of the Scientific Cultural Centre “Ettore Majorana”in Erice. Among those present were the DistrictGovernor Carlo Marullo di Condojanni, Rotarianauthorities and many guests including a Rotarian dele-gation from Australia.

Professor Antonio Zichichi concentrated his studieson the discovery of anti-matter, on magnetic fields andon the measuring of fundamental particles. His inter-esting speech addressed to the Rotarians, in which pro-fessor Gaspare Rodolico was greeted as an old child-hood friend, started with thoughts about the times welive in. These are times in which terrorism has roots ina cultural crisis, times in which Aristotelian logic seemsno longer part of our culture and in which we behave

as if science was yet to be discoveredand great confusion exists betweenlanguage, logics and science.Planetary emergences, has alsoexplained by professor Zichichi, arenot the result of scientific progress.We are unable these days to distin-guish between science and tech-nique and have moved from politi-cal violence to economic violence,which is far more difficult to eradi-cate. The third millennium willhave to come to terms with eco-nomic violence.

WHY PROTECTINGTHE ROTARY EMBLEM AND

NAME MATTERS

Emblazoned on banners, castinto metal plaques, displayed onWeb sites, and used in thousands ofother ways, the Rotary emblem is afamiliar symbol that evokes pridefrom Rotarians and respect fromnon-Rotarians. Around the world,the blue and gold gearwheel repre-sents community involvement, inter-national goodwill, and service.

Rotary International encouragesclubs and districts to use the Rotaryemblem and name as powerful toolsto promote activities, attract newmembers, and increase awareness ofthe organization. Because theRotary emblem and name are regis-tered trademarks, protected throu-ghout the world by RI, it is impor-tant that they are used correctly, toensure that Rotarians maintain theright to use these trademarks wellinto the future.

Poiché entrambi sono marchiregistrati, protetti in tutto ilmondo dal RI, è importante chesiano usati in maniera appropria-ta.
