Rotary Club ofBendigo President 2001-2002

As your President I am pleased to present to the Club the Seventy Seventh Annual Report.

Our program tor the year including service projects. social and other activities has been packed andkept all of us very bUsy. There can be no doubt that our Club is involved in a broad spectrum ofRotary activities each of them bringing benefits to a wlde range of individuals and groups in ourcommunity.

Our ongoing service projects including our ROMAC Goff day, Christmas Carols by Candlelight, EasterArt Show and Charity Dinner Auction were all again hugely successful. Each project provided anopportunity for individual members to contribute their own special talents in a team effort resulting inmagnificent outcomes. I particularty mention Rotarians Bill Gray, John Flood, Louise Galloway andGeoff Brown who were the respective Chairpersons of the Committees involved in the conduct ofthese projects and thank them for their efforts.

I also mention three other new projects undertaken in the last twelve months.

Our Men's Health Forum, co-ordinated by Director Charlie Martin attracted over 320 men to anevening at All Seasons International where free medical checkups were available and various medicalexperts spoke on men's health issues.

Next was a forum involving Depression in the Workplace ccrordinated by Secretary Gail Roberstonagain affording an opportunity for people to learn how to deal with this problem.

Two of our younger members Lara McKinley and Kate Monotti launched an innovative and exdting"Travels at your Desk" Calendar project. I acknowledge the significant contribution and sponsorship ofTelstra Country Wide for this project and thank Lara and Kate for their idea and enterprise whichhopefully will result in approximately $6,000.00 going to Rotary Foundation.

In aggregate our service projects raised approximately $78.000.00 during the year which will bedistributed among various charities and organisations. A fantastic resuh.

Meetings of the Presidents of all the Rotary Clubs in Bendigo were conducted on a bi-monthly basis. They proVided a valuable forum to exchange ideas, to arrange joint projects and to cement cooperation between all Clubs in Bendigo. The Swap Meet catering project which raised $42,000.00 iinNovember last year is an example of how that co-operation is working.

President's report cant...

In AugusUSeptember 2001 our FAIM team including Garry Gunnell, Colin Burns, Chanie Martin,John Krakowiak, Max Gunnell, Jack Gallagher and his son Matthew Gallagher travelled to Samoafor three weeks to undertake a project at the Fagaloa Junior High School. There can be no doubtthat one of the highlights of my year occurred when Rosemary and I together with 24 otherRotarians and partners visited Samoa on a goodwill visit to witness at first hand some of theprojects which our Club has undertaken over the last ten years. Many thanks to Bill Gray whoorganised the trip.

We sponsored participants in RYLA, RYPEN and MUNA and feedback from those involved hasbeen very positive. I believe it is important that our Club maintain communication with theparticipants in order to gain maximum benefits from these programs.

Again we have been involved in the Rotary International Youth Exchange Program hosting incomingstudent Fabian Stoltz from Switzenand and sponsoring two outgoing students Miranda Commins toHungary and Samuel Taylor to South Africa. Thank you to Jane McLean, Counsellor for Fabian andto Ray Paulsen who contributes so much to the organisation of our Rotary Youth Exchange Programboth within the Club and at District level.

Thankyou to Malcolm Andrew and members of his program committee who brought to us a veryinteresting array of speakers on topics with both an intemational and domestic flavour.

Socially we enjoyed:·

• A fellowship luncheon at Sebastian Hotel with President Bev McCaig and members ofInner Wheel.

- A Melbourne Cup luncheon with another brilliant phantom call by Bryan McMahon.• A Christmas night with an Italian flavour organised by Domenic and Heike Coia.• A luncheon and afternoon in the winery at Chateau Leamon with

Melbourne South Rotary Club.- A Foundation fellowship evening at Jack Payntings Nursery organised by Garry Gunnell.• A night at the trots with Norm Phillips

We were saddened by the death of long serving member Bernie Masterson who died on 5th Aprilthis year. A member for 37 years, Bernie was a Paul Harris Fellow and as Editor of our Bulletin wasawarded the Hugh Paten Memorial Trophy for the best Bulletin in the district. He will be rememberedby many of us as a man of grace and courage who lived his life to the full. Our sympathy has beenexpressed to his family and especially his wife Dorothy with whom he shared his life for over 60years.

It is dangerous practice to single out individuals but apart from those already mentioned I particularlythank our Secretary Gail Robertson, our Treasurer Nicole Cox, our Fossicker Editor Jane McLean, assisted by Romy McNally and Communications Officer Frank Lean and members of the Board whocollectively played a vital role in the administration and communication of our Club activities.

Ever generous Geoff McLeod made available to us the Boardroom and other facilities at All Seasonsfor our own Board and other meetings and I thank Geoff for his continued support.

I also acknowledge and thank Assistant Governor John Wigley for his support and encouragementduring the year and my secretary Sheree Clark who has without fail helped me achieve my weeklydeadlines particularly with "Notes from NottsM for the MFossicker"

Thank you also to my wife Rosemary, daughter Kate and other members of my family who haveencouraged and been there for me. It has been a privilege and an honour to serve as President ofthe Rotary Club of Bendigo and I thank members for giving me that opportunity. I congratulateincoming president Brian Doherty and assure both Brian and Pat of my support ovef the forthcomingyear.

It is my belief that the Rotary Club of Bendigo has, as a result of its activities over the last twelvemonths, made a significant contribution not only to the community of Bendigo but also to others onthe international scene. We have made a difference.

Respective Chairpersons: - Kate Monotti, Frank Lean, Jane McLean, Hal Moors, Dominic Cola,Malcolm Andrew, Colin Bums. Bruce Williamson, Geoff McLeod and Ras Bradbury

We have been fortunate to obtain the support and co-operation of all local media including radio, television and newspapers. Our community projects and activities have en}oyed extensive publicexposure through the media and the Club acknowledges and expresses appreciation to ABC Radio,380, KLFM, Ten Victoria, Prime TV, Win TV, Bendigo Advertiser and The Weekly.

Anendance records have been meticulously maintained during the year and reflect an averageanendance of seventy two percent for the year. Make ups have come from a variety of clubs includingthe provisional Rotary Club of Dili in East Timor, the Rotary International Convention in Barcelona,Spain and the Rotary Club of Apia. Samoa.

Our Club Internet Communications Officer Frank Lean continues to monitor this area, receive andonforward appropriate e·mails. Our club website is tired and in need of a complete rebuilding. We aremost grateful to the Bendigo Senior Secondary College which hosts the site gratis however we arelooking for a Rotarian with the appropriate skills to upgrade this site and fully develop its potential.

Again our -Fossicker" provided a valuable week to week link of communication to all Club membersand through 8Notes from Nons8 President Ian endeavoured to keep everyone informed, even via e-mailfrom Samoa.

Club Service cont...

Fellowship continued to flourish under Domenic Coia and activities are detailed in President lan'sReport.

The year saw a decline in membership overall with loss through different circumstances. During theyear we welcomed new members Peter Reading, Zemn Knight, Ian Coates, Kurt Walder and NeilClark and we look fOlWard to their involvement and contribution to our Club.

The Program committee set out to present a wide variety of speakers and topics and methods ofpresentation whilst recognising the Rotary commitments which mainly occupy the first few months ofthe Rotary year.

Apart from the wonderful support from committee members, there were regUlar suggestions from clubmembers which helped us to obtain a wide variety of speakers which all helps to maintain the interestof club members in their weeldy meetings. Club members were also willing to accept the role ofchairman, carrying out this important task with great enthusiasm.

A thought provoking program was the dramatic presentation by the Castlemaine Carers on the trialsand tribulations of mental illness. This year also highlighted the wealth of talented speakers from ourlocal area

A few disappointments - the Thai Ambassador never quite made it to Bendigo and Alan Fels was inBendigo but we were unable to finalise the details at short notice. Maybe next time .

Colin Bums co-ordinated Club representation to the district conference which was held at Mount Bullerand a detailed report was given by Andrew Hampton at a Rotary meeting following the conference. Ourattempt at Kluster Karaoke was certainly not the worst and those invotved certainly enjoyed theparticipation and fellowship which a district conference provides.

Bruce Williamson and his History Committee continued to beaver away during the year maintainingand collating our Club archives which represent a hidden jewel in the fabric of our Club. We arekeenly seeking more convenient premises within which our Club historians can work and store Ol,lrvaluable records. If you are able to assist please let us know.

Our Sergeants, under the command of Geoff McLeod, worked well in the overall conduct of our weeklymeetings, extracting valuable funds during regular fines sessions with some good and at times not sogood jokes and by other means of persuasion. Their valuable contribution is appreciated.

Finally the We Care Committee headed by Ros Bradbury made contact with many members during theyear in varying circumstances including times of bereavement and times of joy.

COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORTDirector - Charlie Martin

A CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT\"~ Chairperson -John Flood

Once again, the Rotary Carols by Candlelight concert was a resounding success, due in part to thebalmy evening but mainly due to the talent assembled by our very capable program director LouisAngus, who again provided the keystone for the event. It has been estimated that over seven thousandpeople were once again able to enjoy the amenity of Rosiland Park, to hear and watch local talent andto actually participate in the event.

Generous financial support was obtained from a number of sponsors (TXU Energy. Telstra CountryWide, Wave Personnel, All Seasons International Hotel and William Farmer Pty Ltd). Their support wasacknowledged, with advertisements in the program supplement issued with the Bendigo Advertiser onthe Saturday prior, as well as an additkmal four thousand copies distributed on the night, together withmention of sponsors in radio and television advertising of the event through community serviceannouncements, display of banners at the event and with special mention of the sponsors in ourPresident's welcoming speech on the night.

Support was also provided by the Inner Wheel Club of Bendigo selling drinks and ice creams and bythe Rotaract Club of Bendigo with a "sausage sizzle-. It is believed that their profits were approximately$1 ,100.00 and $530.00 respectively.

Candles and programs/song books were distributed free upon entry to Aosiland Park, althoughdonations were sought for local charities. "Glow sticks- were on sale at $2.50 each and a raffle wasconducted for a giant Christmas stocking. The overall profit for the concert was approximately$7,000.00.

President Ian presented donations of $1,500.00 each to Salvation Anny, Uniting Church and StVincent de Paul at a subsequent Rotary meeting.

I thank all members of my Committee and other members of the Club who contributed to this verysuccessful evening.

ANNUAL CHARITY DINNER AumaNChairperson· Geoff Brown

The Annual Charity Dinner Auction was held at All Seasons International on Saturday 11th May 2002.The evening was both an outstanding financial success and a wonderlul social event - 211 peopleattended and the net amount raised was $26,900

The Dinner Auction Committee began the planning for the event in November 2001. A strategy planwas developed and adopted and following the mailing of the President's introductory letter to thesupporters of last year's auction, members commenced the major task of contacting potential donorsand collecting the donated items.

Once again the business houses of Bendigo were most generous in providing an extensive array ofitems for auction. As always, several members of the club were most generous in contributing goodsand services. This year an effort was made to put together several unique packages of goods notavailable through retail outlets. These items added extra interest to the auction and sold exceptionallywell.

The Bendigo Lighthouse Foundation was this year's major recipient of funds raised. Significant supportwas provided by Foundation members re the design of the invitations and the catalogue cover, organisation of tables, gathering of items to be auctioned and presentation of the highly entertainingLighthouse youth fashion parade. The framed Michael Schumacher memorabilia provided by theFoundation was of great interest and at $3000, it was the most expensive item sold for the evening.

The event was an outstanding success because of the work of many. As Auction CommitteeChairperson I wish to thank, the members of the committee who worked so well to 'mount the auctioncampaign' to obtain the wonderful array of donated items and to run the evening; and table captainsand those who attended, for entering into the spirit of the evening and ensuring a wonderful time washad by all. I also wish to pass on special personal thanks to Deputy Chairperson Jack Gallagher andPresident Ian Monotti for their superb behind the scenes support - greatly needed and sincerelyappreciated - thanks!

Our prime aim was to have those who attended walk out the door saying that it had been a greatevening and that they would come again - from the 'talk around the town', we believe this to be so.

/t ENVIRONMENT,~" Chairperson· Jim Mahoney

This year we continued our ·Streets to the Creek" project.

This project infonns and demonstrates to Primary School children the effects that litter and othercontaminants have on the environment when washed down our storm water system.

This year in excess of 300 children from Maiden Gully, St Francis of the Fields, Comet Hill and WhileHills Primary Schools have participated.

During October, St Francis of the Fields and Comet Hill Schools combined to produce a concertfeaturing "Streets to the Creek" at the 'River Health Conference- held in Mildura. This concert provedso successful that a repeat performance was held in November at the Bob Campbell TheatretteBendigo.

Our thanks to Coliban Water, City of Greater Bendigo and North Central Water Watch for theirassistance with this project

foundation report cont...

-A calendar project was launched to raise funds for The Rotary Foundation. While not the financialsuccess it deserved I thank Telstra Country Wide for their sponsorship. Special thanks go to two ofour newer members in Kate Monotti and Lara McKinley for having a go at something different. As aclub we need to continually support this type of effort from our members.-The project in Samoa, which was supported by a Foundation Matching Grant, was completed with anumber of our members traveling to Samoa to work in the village. The school community now has anew teachers accommodation unit and toilet block, which they can take great pride in. As a result ofthe success of this project it is now hoped to develop the concept further with the construction ofmore toilet blocks in a number of remote Samoan village schools.

Bendigo was not included in the itinerary of this years visiting GSE team from Canada so we werenot called on to host any of the members. It is hoped that next year's team will be back in Bendigo sothat we can again experience this tremendous program first hand.

INTERNATIONAL REPORT, Director· Colin Burns

Major activities in the area 01 International Service during the year included the following:

-Fundraising lor ROMAC through the conduct of a gotf day-A team of Rotary Volunteers completing a RAWCS project in Samoa.-An inter-club visit to our sister club in Apia, Samoa-Incoming and outgoing Rotary Exchange Students.

Under the capable leadership of our ROMAC committee chairman, Past President and Paul HarrisFellow Bill Gray, a golf day was organised and conducted. With the aid of sponsorship provided byThe Salvation Army Employment Plus and trophies and prizes donated by Bendigo Rotarians andothers, in excess of $6,500 was raised for ROMAC. With teams representing businesses and Rotaryclubs, a great day was had by all participants and in addition to the funds raised the exposure of·Rotary to the local community will be of significant benefit.

It is considered that this project has significant growth potential in terms of the level of participationand, as a consequence, even more success as a fund raising event.

A further amount of $2,800 was also raised for ROMAC through the generosity of local developerFrank Ham who allowed our Club to collect donations on entry to his architectural exhibition held atDudley House earlier this year. Thank you to Charlie Martin for his co-ordination of this project.

In AugustlSeptember a group of Rotary Volunteers, including five of our members, one father and oneson, traveled to Samoa and undertook a RAWCS project at the Fagaloa Bay Secondary School. Thegroup, which was led by Past President and Paul Harris Fellow Garry Gunnell, was of varying abilitiesbut, with every member giving whatever they had to give, constructed a teachers' residence, a nonpolluting toilet, and a number of chairs and desks. In addition a number of computers donated by theBendigo Health Care Group were installed and preliminary training of the school staff in their useconducted.

This project. funded in part by a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant, was of great significance to boththe recipients and the providers of the aid. The school is located in a beautiful but remote location andwas in need of the aid provided to enable its survtval. Those volunteers on their first visit becameaware of what previous visitors already knew to be the most wonderful aspect of Samoa. its people. While Samoans, by our standards, might be considered to be poor, this poverty does not limit theirfriendliness, hospitality or their genuine gratitude for what we were able to give.

The inter-elub visit to the Rotary Club of Apia was a highlight of the year for the twenty-six Rotariansand partners who participated. All participants are indebted to Bill Gray for his outstanding efforts ininitiating, organizing and leading this most memorable of trips. Highlights of the trip included:

"Attendance at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Apia with Bendigo Rotarians acting as Sergeant and Guest Speaker.

"Dining at the American and Australian High Commissions with theCommissioners in attendance.

"Participation in a golf tournament at the Royal Samoan Go" Club in which BendigoRotarians were not only defeated by the local Rotarians but also suffered significantlyfrom the heat.

·Participation in a tennis tournament with precisely the same results as the golf tournament."The establishment and development of personal relationships with Samoans which,

at the very least, resulted in significant growth in goodwill and understanding."The growth of friendship amongst the trip participants as a result of the shared experience."A traditional kava ceremony provided by the people of the village of Maasina whereour group of Rotary Volunteers stayed while completing the RAWCS project in August."A visit to the Fagaloa Bay Secondary School, the recipients of the aid providedduring the RAWCS project in August.

For those who were returning to the school it was gratifying to see facilities that had been providedbeing put to good use. The efforts of the school children in putting on a concert in our honour, reminded us of the reason that we provide such aid; the children.

The Club's long and proud history of involvement in Student Exchange was added to by the hostingof Fabian Stolz from Switzerland and sponsoring Sam Taylor on exchange to South Africa andMiranda Commins to Hungary. With Jane McLean acting as Fabian's counsellor and Past President,Paul Harris Fellow and Student Exchange veteran, Ray Paulsen assisting our outgoing students, thebenefits of this program to the students and to everybody they come in contact with have beenrealised.

Our confidence in the future of the Youth Exchange program was given a boost in recent times by theoutstanding quality 01 the fifteen applicants for exchange that we had the pleasure to interview. Inaddition the fact that another of the Bendigo Clubs has re-joined the program after a period of time isconsidered a significant advance.

NEW GENERATIONSDirector - John Krakowiak

The Rotary Club of Bendigo has supported the following youth activities during the 200112002 year.

RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Award (Coordinator: Kate Monotti)RYLA is a 7-day residential seminar for young people (17-25) with exceptional leadership qualities.Importantly, it not only focuses on professional and personal development skills, it also addressesissues involving: family, social and professional conflict.Emma Hampton, a student from Latrobe University, was chosen as the most suitable applicant torepresent the club at the lord Somers' camp in September, 2001.Many members would remember Emma from when she spoke at a Rotary meeting to not onlyexpress her thanks for being chosen, but also the importance of this program for young leaders in thecommunity. Emma urged all of us to support RYLA because it provides a unique opportunity for theleaders of tomorrow to further develop their leadership qualities.

RYPEN - Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (Coordinators: Neville Sharpe and Greg McKeown).Rypen is a weekend seminar for year 10 and 11 students to communicate and debate ideas andissues that will further assist them in forming their own values and standards. Unlike RYLA, RYPENis not designed for high achievers but for the average young person. The camp was held in October,2001.Five students were chosen from local schools to attend the camp nestled in the Benloch Valley north of Lancefield. From all reports, the students benefited in respect to the workshops oncommunication skills, problem solving, goal setting and teamwork.

MUNA - Model United Nations Assembly (Coordinators: Daniel Buttolph and Neil Burdon)A weekend seminar modeled on the United Nations; MUNA simulates the workings of the UnitedNations. For example, representatives from countries are allowed to group together and vote as abloc.During the seminar, senior students have an opportunity to debate matters of political and socialconcerns from the country with which they have been selected to represent. Hence, not onlyimproving their pUblic speaking and debating skills, but also increasing their tolerance to opposingviews.Hailey Drew, a student from Bendigo Senior Secondary College, represented Egypt (in full nationalcostume). Hailey spoke to the club in late May this year of her experiences on the weekend.National Youth Science ForumCurrently, Bendigo along with other Rotary clubs are examining student applications for the nextScience Forum in 2003.Rotaract

ROTORACT - is designed for young adults between 18 and 30. Rotary's partner in service, Rotoractis a service club that organizes projects for community, both locally and further afield. Rotaract arefacilitators for RYPEN.The support of local Rotary clubs is important to the continued success of Rotaract. During the year.Rotaract and all local Rotary clubs held a joint ten-pin and lawn bowling night, which were both ahuge success. Rotaract assisted with the Swap Meet stalls, Easter Art Show and Carols by .Candlelight. Presently, Rotaract and our club are working very closely with the idea of holding a jointfund raising. Furthermore, they are working on a project assisting a child with a disability in herhome. With regular attendees at their meetings, Rotaract and Rotary are drawing closer links, which willbenefit both clubs.

DRIVER'S SEAT· Targeted at Year 9 boys and focusing on developing life skills over a 8 weekperiod, there were unfortunately no workshops or camps held this year.
