Blast from the past - the year 2005 – 2006 Rotary International President Carl-Wilhem Stenhammar

President John Gatt

The year started with the Clubs having to complete two projects started during the pervious year. One of which was our Centenary Project with the Rotary Club of Preston - the BMDI charity house.

Working bees were well attended by our members as was the auction day. Unfortunately the house did not sell at auction but as you all know, sold earlier this year. The Project was an outstanding success with over $175,000 being raised to help wipe out BMDI's debit for the Rotary accommodation center in North Melbourne. Thanks must go to all that helped especial our members of the BMDI's committee of Geoff Swan, Clyde Hume and Ern Wardell.

The second project was the BBQ at Rotary Centennial Park in Diamond Creek. Thanks to Matt Swan and his committee and all other helpers.

Membership

Membership was once again one of our top priorities and I'm happy to welcome Greg Adams, Eileen Hinxman, Bill Kilpatrick, Alan Jones and Phil Chambeyron to their second Rotary year. The membership committee of Joe Di Natale, Bev Baker and Pat Millar produced pamphlets and organized three membership BBQ during last year. Thank you very much for you outstanding efforts.

Talking about giving money away, the club gave $3000.00 to the Cyclone Larry apple, $2000.00 to the Diamond Creek RSL for the additional work on the war memorial and $5000.00 to the local Baseball Club which was in danger of disbanding without our help.

In total over $22,300.00 was give to various organizations and community projects. Over $16,350.00 from our Town Fair account and the rest from the Charity account. --- well done to all members - give your self a hand

Each week we attend our own meeting. Diamond Creek is a great club and I am delighted with the activity that is taking place in so many areas of service. We have had many interesting meetings with some inspirational speakers. So why are we spending a week visiting other clubs? Because we can always learn more and bring back some new ideas! By SCATTERING we: We are asking each of you, in a group of two or three, to visit another Club Meeting. We will organise the logistics of this at tonight’s meeting. Try to widen your world! If you have friends or acquaintances at another club and have been there on a number of occasions – choose somewhere else! Let’s all get out of our comfort zone! If you are an experienced Rotarian, please invite a new or prospective member to accompany you. It is great as a new Rotarian to visit other clubs and it is amazing to see just how differently they all operate. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit most of the suburban clubs in our District. As a very new Rotarian, taking on the role of a Host Counsellor to an Ambassadorial Scholar, meant that I accompanied Pierre to about a dozen speaking

engagements. What an eye opener that was! I saw so many different ways of running meetings, of involving members and of undertaking different community services. It was a quick learning curve, but I am ever appreciative of the opportunity that it gave me to rapidly learn about Rotary! I met some great people and now know members from just about all of the local clubs. Broadening our horizons can only put so much more back into our club. But not only are we gaining new ideas for Diamond Creek, we also have the opportunity to promote our club. One of your group will have the chance to speak at their meeting and tell them a little of what we are doing. This is our chance to showcase the club. Speak to them about the great projects that are taking place and invite them to be part of one of our meetings. Request their company at our 20th birthday party on 2nd June. Please don’t see this as a week off. I ask everyone to participate. Not only will you meet some new people and gain some new ideas, I am sure that you will really enjoy yourself. Alan Jones

what happened last week ? President Alan Jones opened the meeting and called for makeups. PP Ern Wardell noted that he has done a makeup at the RC Burleigh Heads and an e-club makeup the following week.

President Alan Jones advised the members that the date for the arrival of Youth Exchange student Beatriz from Brazil is still not fixed but we will be advised soon. He asked that families invite her when they are having a family outing. An outbound exchange student will be needed and Alan suggested canvassing local schools for a possible student.

Alan Jones advised that a venue, the Diamond Valley Baptist Church, has been found for the Food Handler’s Course.

Alan also advised that the club will be organizing a promotion in Diamond Creek on the 23rd of February and asked that members wear their Polio Plus badges if they are going to attend. There will be a booth with stands and brochures.

PP John Gatt announced that it has been one year since India has been free of reported cases of Polio , and that in recognition of Rotary’s finalizing of the $200 million challenge, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given Rotary another $50 million , no strings attached.

PP Rod Mackenzie advised that work needs to start on the proposed Market, but that the council has requested surveys and studies that would require up to 50 hours of work. Peter and Jacqui Hodge may be able do this work.

PP Bev Baker in the role of “On to Conference” advised the members of all the details regarding registration and program and PDG Rob Lloyd mentioned that the club will be running the next conference and at this one as many member as possible should attend and all members should take notes.
