asked to join the club, David Ellis, Michelle Cray and Geoff Boult which isexcellent news and a great start to the year. Can I remind everyone thatalthough we will have more of these specific membership nights the onus ison everyone to try and attract new members and to invite potential membersto any of our meetings?

Interesting Facts and Observations:

1. Half of all Americans live within 50 miles of their birthplace2. 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,3213. It is impossible to lick your elbow.4. Why do toasters always have a setting so high that it could burn the toast to

a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?5. Some interesting anagrams - ASTRONOMER = MOON STARER,

DESPERATION = A ROPE ENDS IT, SLOT MACHINES = CASH LOST INME

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next Wednesday and in themeantime have a great week and remember The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands. Your PresidentChris Potter

Tony Monley then made an impressive presentation (including DG David's brilliantJibJab dance moves) on the next District Conference (Geelong, 26-28 February,2010) and left us with the following messages:

1. To organise and send though a group photo of Club Members. (soon)2. To prepare material for a Club Newsreel (2 minutes as covered in the

recent Media Day event)3. To continue to look for potential event / segment sponsors.4. To enter into the spirit of the Saturday Night Party theme "Rotary

Rocks".5. To have a strong Club presence! (see Jack Tanner or Liz Olie if not already

registered )

Liz Olie then introduced Sean Gurney, our Club's most recent RYLA participant)to share his experiences. In a passionate presentation, it was clear the impactthis opportunity had on both him and his other course colleagues; apart fromlife skills and life long friendships, two, possibly three, Rotaract Clubs will beformed. Sean thanked the Club for the opportunity and offered to be a Clubambassador for the ongoing RYLA program. PE Roger Reece advised members that the Club had successfully managed toadvertise the Achievement Program in the next edition of the "GoAuto" eZinewhich is circulated to some 60,000 movers and shakers within the extendedautomotive industry. The format for this advertisement was very challengingand was largely completed in a tight timeframe with the design talents of CliffGurney.

Tony Robinson, once again demonstrating his creativity, then introduced theheadline attraction to celebrated the Club's Birthday - our very own "Hot Seat"(modelled on the Channel Nine program) with twelve questions structuredaround the Club's history.

The rules were simple. The most senior Rotarians from each of the four tableswere asked to take a "Hot Seat" to answer questions. Twelve bottles of wine atstake with the pool reducing for each incorrect answer, as well as the nextquestion moving on to the next "Hot Seat" contestant.

Some great fun was had, aided by a superb graphic representation (alsodesigned and programmed by Cliff Gurney), culminating in Frank Evansanswering the last question, that had it been the real deal, may have resulted

in a medical emergency!

District Media Day Update:

PP Paul Kounnas and Russell Gurney recently attended the District's MediaDay event at Channel Nine. Apart from an inside view of the machinations ofChannel Nine, we were armed with some skills from which to prepare ourClub's Newsreel for the Geelong District Conference.

A clear highlight was the gracious hosting by Peter Hitchener, also one of theConference's guest speakers. The down to earth and fun side of his personality,as well as his wealth of knowledge of the industry and appreciation of Rotary, added to the success of the day.

RI PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEby Russell Gurney

Lord Byron wrote, "The days of our youth are the days of ourglory." For me, that is the line that springs to mind wheneverRotary's youth programs are mentioned. In Rotary, Septemberis New Generations Month – a time to focus our attention onour programs for youth and the role they play in shaping theRotarians of tomorrow.

Our youth programs - Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth LeadershipAwards, and Rotary Youth Exchange - are some of the most importantprograms of Rotary. I say this because of the unparalleled potential theyhave to influence young minds and souls toward peace, goodwill, andharmony. That potential is the greatest in youth because the experiences ofour early years never leave us; they shape who we later become. In thewords often attributed to St. Francis Xavier, "Give me a boy until he isseven, and I will give you the man." For myself, I would give it a bitlonger than that - but there is no doubt that the experiences of our youthhave a greater formative power, and a greater ability to shape character, than any we may have in our adulthood. When a teenager from the United States has the chance to travel to Indiato participate in a National Immunization Day, or when a student fromBrazil spends a year studying in Japan, that person will be foreverchanged. These young people will have formed connections and affectionsthat will endure. They will never think about their own country, or theworld, in the same way again. Their perspective, their priorities, and theirvalues will have been permanently shaped by that experience in a way thatno later experiences will have the power to do. Your hard work ensuresthat these experiences continue to be possible - that these programscontinue to be available, to be well run, and to earn the trust of theparticipants and their families. The impressions of youth are strong, and they are lasting. There is never asecond chance at them. We may grow and change as we get older, and weare surely changed by all of our experiences. But there is never another

chance to build who we are. That happens only once: in our youth. The days of our youth truly are the days of our glory - but throughRotary's youth programs, those days become the glory of all of Rotary. John KennyPresident, Rotary International Source: Rotary International News - 28 August 2009
