Thank you to Cherie, Ken and Charmaine who attended District Assembly with myself on 26 May.
It was a very pleasant few hours hearing from the District team about the direction for District for 2014-15.
It's now full steam ahead ready for the Quiz Night on Friday. By the time we meet on Monday night it will be all over. Tickets sales are going well, but if you have been talking with friends or work colleagues about the might encourage them to come along.
Businesses have been very generous in donating prizes for the night so there are some great prizes on offer.
It has been exciting to read about the happenings at the Rotary International Convention that has just taken place in Sydney.
Great speakers, great Fellowship and the House of Friendship
looked amazing. A Rotary International Convention should be in your planning for the future.
Being at a venue with 18000+ Rotarians and partners is an ab so l u t e l y m i nd -b l ow i ng experience.
As I mentioned last week our Changeover will be taking place on Friday 25 July. It will have a theme of Christmas in July.
I have heard from Edward. He and the family are settling into life in Gladstone. I think he's finding it quite different to Kalgoorlie.

IMAGINE YOUR ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL SURGERY WAS LEFT TO CHANCE It seems unbelievable, but for many people living in developing countries this is the reality. The World Health Organisation reports that over 2 billion people across the globe have no access to basic surgical care.
That’s where together we make the difference. Your donations make it possible for Interplast to increase people’s access to high quality surgical, medical and allied health services.
In March 2014 I accompanied one of our plastic and reconstructive surgical teams to Vientiane, Laos. While we were there we met a little boy, Seng, only 18 months old. Seng received deep burns to his face and right hand in late February when he pulled a rice-cooker containing boiling water down on his head. With any hot water injury to the eyes the risk of blindness is significant.
There were two key features of Seng’s situation which resulted in a positive outcome:
• His burns were initially treated by a local surgeon who had trained alongside Interplast teams over a number of years.
• The Interplast team, together with the local surgeon, were able to operate on Seng very soon after his injury.
I was struck by the chance nature of the timing of our visit. Had Seng not received treatment from that particular local surgeon and from our team he could have faced a lifetime of disability from lasting blindness and facial disfigurement. The far-reaching consequences of this might include dependence on family, possible social stigma from his community and the likely impact on his access to education and other economic opportunities.
WE ALL AGREE, NO ONE SHOULD BE CONDEMNED TO A LIFETIME OF DISABILITY AS A RESULT OF A PERFECTLY TREATABLE INJURY
That’s why the work of Interplast is so vital. Through our ‘twin-track’ approach we focus on giving patients access to life-changing medical procedures that they would otherwise not be able to afford, while building the capacity of local medical staff through a range of formal and informal training, and mentoring activities.
Through this approach we’re working towards a vision where people in developing countries across the Asia Pacific region have timely access to high quality surgical, medical and allied health services. This is a long-term and complex process. It involves working closely with our country partners to develop programs that reflect the needs of the communities where we work. It requires the commitment and dedication of our amazing volunteers, who tirelessly give their time, passion and expertise to achieve our vision. It needs funding.
Over the coming 12 months, with your support, and with our volunteers and country partners, we'll continue to do our life-changing work. All donations over $2 are tax-deductible.

A Message from District Governor Erwin Biemel …
Dear Esther
As the Rotary year is fast coming to an end I would like to thank you for your support of the Rotary Foundation “our charity of choice” .
Ongoing support from clubs in our district will ensure that in three years’ time this district and our clubs can continue to “ do good in the world”.
Your club’s donation of $ 1592 USD to the annual fund of the foundation and $566.00 USD to Polio Plus is commendable. Your contribution is appreciated by this District and RI.
This year our Global Grant Projects and District Grant Projects are valued at over $360,000USD for a donation of $149900USD in 2011-12 to foundation. This is the power of the foundation at work showing that active clubs engaged with the foundation can achieve great things.
It should always be remembered that our Foundation returns funds to the districts through the share program and has minimal administrative costs unlike other charities or charitable causes.
