ROHAN’S RITINGS It was truly great to be back with you last week, travel broadens the mind, but Nepal is tough on the soul and having to think before anything goes near your mouth including your toothbrush! - oh what we take for granted. It was a terrific board meeting and the correspondence has gone to the Shire saying no to Gundary, but leaving it open for Derek or Terry who may want to pick it up, (if in fact the structure is in the Moruya Depot). As for my watch, Col has fast tracked the installation of the insulation at the Pre School by professional installers, and we are forging ahead with the Pre School committee to build, in conjunction with their people, the ‘chook shed’ and garden facility. We have a great opportunity to tap into a different group of the Moruya community and it would be great if that also added to our membership profile. I hope you all enjoy this new pro- ject and the opportunities it will deliver for Moruya Rotary. It was PETS (Presidents Elect Training Seminar) and District Assembly at Eden last weekend, disappointing numbers for Derek and Moruya, (only Phil A, Derek (Fran), Terry (Carol) & I). This was the one and ONLY training weekend for the new board of the Club so it will leave a fairly substantial hole. It was a great weekend with over 230 delegates attend- ing the dinner on Saturday night. We welcome back John & Peggy from ventures on the high seas and the plane that flew! ROHAN’S RITINGS

It was truly great to be back with you last week, travel broadens the mind, but Nepal is tough on the soul and having to think before anything goes near your mouth including your toothbrush!

I hope you all enjoy this new pro-ject and the opportunities it will deliver for Moruya Rotary.

It was a great weekend with over 230 delegates attend-ing the dinner on Saturday night.

We welcome back John & Peggy from ventures on the high seas and the plane that flew! Not sure where Ken and Karen are but it seems not at Turlinjah!

Hopefully tonight we wrestle back the Cinders trophy. It would certainly be a nice near ending to the year.

Last Week - ANZAC

Our Guest Speaker last week was Cdr Chris Stevens RANR who gave us the AN-ZAC Day address. Chris joined the RAN in 1969 and rose over the next 20 years to the rank of Lt Cdr. He left for a few years in private en-terprise, but returned to the Navy where he has since risen to Commander in the RAN Reserves.

Chris explained to the meeting the strategy behind the Gallipoli landings. The Gallipoli campaign took place at Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey from 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916. A joint British and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, and secure a sea route to Russia. The intent was to keep Russia in the war and defeat the Ottoman Empire, but this did not succeed. The campaign was the first major battle under-taken by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in both of these countries. As Anzac Day, the 25th April remains the most significant commemoration of military casualties and vet-erans in Australia and New Zealand,.

Originally intended to be a naval campaign, after several battleships were damaged or sunk, the campaign was changed to require army landings on the peninsular to take the forts commanding the Darda-nelles. This also failed with heavy casualties.

One successful part of the campaign was that of the Australian sub-marine AE2, which penetrated the Dardanelles to the Black Sea, and spread havoc in the Ottoman Navy until it was abandoned and sunk, and the crew captured.

Members were most appreciative that Chris made this trip from Canberra to make this presentation.

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought: Arch C. Klumph, Well-rounded Citizen. This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Living a Full and Well-rounded Life, as illustrated by the founder of our Foundation, Arch C. Klumph. From our archives: Arch had a great love of music. At age 18 he began to study the flute, and three years later he received a chair in the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. He played with the orchestra for 14 years and was a lifelong sponsor of it. "My heart is in music and my head is in business," he said. Arch balanced his love of music and theatre with his professional business and dreamed huge dreams beyond Cleveland to the theatre of the world, with spectacular success. One of those dreams was The Rotary Foundation. Your contribution to The Rotary Foundation keeps Arch Klumph’s dream alive and fulfils the dreams of many people around the world who need our help.

Last week President Rohan presented our cheque for $1500 to the Moruya District Hospital Auxiliary represented by Sandra Spencer.

John Marsden’s horseshoe throwing event at the Family Fun day raised $117 for the Auxiliary - and topped the takings for the games events.

Thanks to Acting Under Assistant Deputy Editor Ken

The last five Bulletins and substantial parts of this one were produced by Ken - very competently, you would have to agree.

Ken and Karen, Terry and Carol are victims of the Iceland volcano. Peggy and I didn’t see them among the milling crowds at Changi or in the early hours at Mascot on Saturday. We may hear tonight how they are faring.

Summary of Board Minutes taken 14 April 2010Moruya Pre School is active in supporting themselves and as such this project will be fast tracked. Insulation for the Pre School will be purchased from Mor-dek and installed by a qualified tradesman. A plan for a garden and poultry yard was circulated to the Board. This aspect will be a combined effort of the Pre School and Rotary. Total cost expected to be around $3,500.

Gundary Park. This project has been on the books for all of this year and Mi-chael’s year with no action. There has been no co-operation from the Shire with phone calls not being returned. A list of chronological events will be incorpo-rated into a letter to the Shire informing them of our intention to cancel the pro-ject.

International evening. A formal invitation to the Consul General at the Chilean Embassy to address our Club as Guest Speaker has been sent. RSVP has been requested by 30 April 2010.

Grant Application. Ken McLeod has prepared a Grant application for funds to cover the cost of some needed items for the Kiosk and the Van.

Financial donation to Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Colleen Talty. Background information was provided to the Board. Colleen Talty is a resident at “The Glen” in Bateman’s Bay which is a full profit organization. The Rotary Club of Bateman’s Bay received a similar request; as we believe have other Service Clubs. Our club has been in contact with the Bateman’s Bay Rotary Club and they are still deliberating. The Board agreed to defer this issue until Bateman’s Bay make a decision.

Shelterbox. Rotary International is substantially guarded in speaking on this topic. There is still a lot of deliberation on how to handle the situation. It was agreed to give it a low profile until the District can clarify and provide guidance on its future publicity. Phil and Rohan are the Club’s contacts.

Treasurer’s Report. In the absence of the Treasurer a summary of the Club’s healthy financial situation was tabled.

District Governor nominee.

Phil has been invited to attend anniversary celebrations for Ulladulla 50 years Saturday week and Nowra’s 75 years is coming up shortly.

Phil extended his appreciation of the support and backing he has received from the Club for the position of District Governor. The volunteers for jobs for the Conference Committee are a strong indication. Committees drawn from Clubs within the District will need to be formed now as it is only two years away.

volunteers to erect the Mordek marquee has been received from the Conve-nor of the Community Day River of Art Festival. The marquee will need to be collected on the Friday prior to the event and returned Monday.

Changeover Dinner. A three-course menu at a cost of $35 per person has been agreed.

Partner Badges. Several new Partners badges had been received and dis-tributed to selected spouses. The new badges are much clearer to read than the current partner badges. It was agreed to place an order for new badges to cover the remaining partners.

International Service.

Youth Exchange. Sadly, due to the lack of interest, it has been decided not to host an Exchange Student in the 2010/2011 Rotary year.

Catering.

Van. An electrical fault was detected in the van during the Amplify con-cert. The Club will need to spend money to fix the problem. Steve to fol-low up with Electrician. Ron and Steve have calculated that 110 hours are dedicated for catering a race meeting.

Hospital Fete and Family Fun Day was a great success. The Board agreed to donate its profit from the Kiosk of $1500 to the Auxiliary.

Community.

Bowel Scan is winding down. Sylvia Heffernan stepped in for Cletus and Isabel to assist with this project. A special thank you is extended to Sylvia for doing a great job. To date 245 ½ hours has been dedicated to outside Community Service.

Vocation.

Jessica Thompson. Marie reported that Jessica is so grateful to Rotary for the financial assistance she has been given. The money has been spent on books and fees. Jessica is working very hard and is thoroughly enjoying her study. She is very keen to talk to Rotary sometime in the future.

Foundation.

John G. will speak to the club later in the year about Angel Flight. The Board has agreed to make a donation to Angel Flight instead of Snowy Hy-dro.

Media and PR.

Second Income Stream. Discussion focused on the Swap Meet at Goul-burn run by Rotary that produces a profit of $25,000 for one event.

Last Weekend in Eden - PE Derek reports

DGN Phil, Pres. Rohan, PN Terry and myself (accompanied by Carol and Fran) attended the combined PETS and District Assembly over the weekend of 17th/18th April at Eden. Terry attended the Directors train-ing session, I the President Elect training session, and Phil and Rohan were presenters for the weekend (Visioning and YEP respectively). The weekend was well organised and presented, and the PE sessions were run by the Assistant Governors. However, Terry and I felt there was not enough time to put across all the information necessary.

We all attended a fabulous dinner at the Eden Fishermans Club on Sat-urday night, with a guest speaker who is an Eden local, the Captain of the Australian Womens Woodcutting Team. She regaled us with a hu-merous insight into woodcutting competitions.

All in all a good weekend, and worth attending. Derek

A report on progress on Natarbora RAWCS projectPP Allan Elton and Colleen Elton, who the Co-ordinators of RAWCS Project 141/2005 write as follows to the Presidents and International Directors of Ro-tary Clubs in District 9710.

“As our first letter circulated to all Clubs in District 9710 in February, did not seem to have reached members of many Clubs, we are writing again to inform Clubs and former supporters, that we hope to finalise Project 141/2005 at Na-tarbora in Timor Leste this year. Could you please take this letter to your Club meetings and Board for consideration. The project has been huge but very suc-cesful with the completion of the restoration of the five large dormitories at the Agricultural College and now the restoration of the two Gov Cottages to be used by the community and birthing mothers. One of these cottages (two flats) was almost completed in 2009 and we have two teams of tradesmen going over this year to do the second cottage. However we are a little short on money and need approx $5,000.00 US to complete the task. Clubs that can see their way clear to donate to this international project can send their donations to the RAWCS Eastern Region Treasurer, Mr Jack Elliot at PO Box 134, Oatlands, NSW, 2117 and the cheque must be made out to RAWCS Eastern Region O/Seas Aid Fund-Project 141/2005. Please let Allan and I know as well by re-turn email for our records as well. Your support for this very worthy project would be very much appreciated.”

The DG has written to all his clubs

Dear President,

In February, I issued a challenge to the Clubs in District 9710 to match the efforts of the Rotary Club of Moruya. Moruya have all of their members as Centurion contributors to the Rotary Foundation!!

Will your Club be taking up that challenge to match Moruya’s commitment to the Rotary Foundation?

All it takes is for members to donate A$100 (or more!) to the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust (for the Rotary Foundation). Yep, that’s all it takes! And, it doesn’t even have to be in one payment, if that makes it easier for members (and others) to give to the Rotary Foundation. In addition, there is a link to a form to complete to have contributions towards that goal automatically deducted from accounts or credit cards on a regular basis. How painless!

If every Rotarian in District 9710 became a Centurion member, we would blow our recent giving goals out of the water!! And, we would have at least A$15,000 of Rotary Foundation money available to us to spend on projects in OUR District! And, we’d have plenty of Foundation money to use in matching grants and in sup-porting overseas projects Clubs identify.

So, how about encouraging that support for the Rotary Foundation in your Club?

Please let me know what you decide to do.

Yours in Rotary Fellowship,

Michael W Pedler (Julia)District Governor 2009-10Rotary International District 9710 Inc.

MORE FROM GROUCHO MARX

∞ Military justice is to justice what military music is to music.

∞ One morning I shot an elephant in my pyjamas. How he got into my pyja-mas I'll never know.

∞ I have had a perfectly wonderful evening, but this wasn't it.

∞ If I held you any closer I would be on the other side of you.

∞ I must confess, I was born at a very early age.

∞ I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members.

∞ I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury.
