President’s Very Serious Message for March

Yes it’s true, the 2010/2011 Rotary year is more than half over, and yes I’ve said that this year “The fun is just beginning! With months of jam packed and fun filled meetings, service projects and special events ahead of us”. Then why isn’t our club growing? Membership - The club’s goal for the year is a net increase of five members. We are now down 1 member with the resignation of Norma Rosales, an 8 year member of our club. If you see Norma please tell her that we are sorry to see her go and we will miss her.

I think that the overall success of the Rotary Club of Carpinteria depends upon the regular addition of new members. Please spend a little time this week and in the weeks ahead talking to your friends, neighbors, local business people and former members about Rotary and our club and invite them to visit. And then, it is our job as members to introduce ourselves to visitors and prospective new members and welcome them to our club. We currently have an empty table at our meetings and there is always room for more members. Who will you invite to Rotary? The Carpinteria Talent Show 2011, our major fundraiser of the year, held on February 19th, was indeed a great success. It was great to see the Carpinteria community so involved and having a wonderful time. Club members, Roland Rotz and David Powdrell outdid themselves this year as Co-Producers. In fact, David might have overdone it a bit since he went in to the hospital the next day for emergency Bypass surgery. The word is that he is doing fine and he should be back with us soon.

Building Community to make the Carpinteria Talent Show

By Roland Rotz, Co-Chair

If it takes a village to raise a child, then it takes a community to build a talent show. It all began one morning at Hugo’s when Dave Powdrell and Roland Rotz (that’s me) learned that Ryan Nakasone would not be here next year and he was looking for someone or two to chair the show. Seeing the amount of work that Ryan did, we agreed to chair the 2011 show together. Capitalizing on the

success of 2010, we decided to keep the basic formula and adjust a few things that would dramatically improve the show. We planned to spend for a professional stage that would support dancers and a piano. It turned out to be twice the size as last year. We expanded on the theme of “the stars coming out at night”. When asking for help from Rotarians in our club, we almost filled our volunteer sign up on the first day we asked for

help. As summer progressed and rumors abounded about possibly using Plaza Theatre for the show, we had already locked in an agreement with Boys and Girls Club to have the show there again. Thursday morning at Hugo’s became a popular haunt for David Powdrell, Donna Treloar, Richard Campos, Meredith McCurdy, Andy Bailard and me, as plans came together for the 2011 Carpinteria Talent Show. I coordinated the auditions and the talent, David coordinated

getting sponsors, Donna covered the details of selling tickets and keeping track of income/expenses, Richard coordinated the volunteers from Interact and the setup of the event, Meredith did everything from auditions, getting sponsors, setup, and coordinating ushers, and Andy helped with sponsors and made sure we didn’t spend too much so there would be enough left for the Foundation. Really, truth be told, we had a lot of fun, and everyone helped everybody. (except Donna wouldn’t let us help her count the money).

Auditions were scheduled and Pat Kistler stepped up to help out with advertizing. We tried using a banner and the Coastal View ads to get the word out rather than putting out posters around town. Auditions were done over several evenings. It was

such a pleasure to see such willing participants put their heart and soul into their performance. Many in the audience did not understand that the selection process meant that all performers were winners. In our first year we were scrambling for 24 acts. This year we had 45 auditions for 25 slots. The judges were David Powdrell, Nilo Fanucchi, Lin Graf, Meredith McCurdy, Matthew Berger, Doralee Jacobson, and me. This year our selections ranged from 10 years old to 91 years old. We turned down new acts and acts that performed last year. These were hard decisions but our team did an admirable job making their selections. We had hoped for a primary sponsor this year. While we didn’t achieve that goal, what we found was another year of incredible outpouring by many sponsors that increased our level of sponsorship. This effort was due to the hard work of many of you, including Andy Bailard, Linda Hernandez, Donna

Treloar, Barry Enticknap, Craig Meister, Tom Higgins, David Powdrell, and Pat Kistler. Others contributed with funds that helped a great deal. You know who you are! Thank you! We made in excess of 10,000, but who’s counting!

As we neared the show, so many people contributed in

preparation of the big night. Paul Wright brought the brew. John Welty brought the wine and kept a cool eye on the bar preparations. The night went smoothly for John Welty with the help of his wife,

Vera, along with Fred Shaw and his wife pouring drinks for everyone. David Godfrey manned the soda and water booth. Donna Treloar and David Powdrell monitored the sale of tickets. Donna prepared for ticket pick up and purchase, and the eventual “sold out” sign to be placed out front. Mike Malone

and his wife, Lisa, Michael Harrington and his wife, Jan,

Rob Godfrey and his wife, Fran, Linda Hernandez and Harry Harper joined in helping sell tickets. Mark King prepared the interim music on his upright baby grand piano. Karen Graf made the stars shine on stage and the gym to look like a walk in the park. Matthew Berger put together the “solid” contract and Meredith McCurdy, Richard Campos, and David Bloedel got signatures from all the performers. Richard Campos set up tables for the Interact club to sell their goodies while Rich’s wife, Colleen kept a watchful eye

over the goodies. Richard coordinated chair and bleacher placement, while Dave Durflinger, Craig Murray, Meredith McCurdy, Michael Ensign, and Ryan Reed helped to form the gym into a theatre for the night. Bob Berkenmeier put together a slideshow to wow the crowd and Larry Nimmer figured out how to put his video onto the big screen during the show. Lin Graf had to do finger exercises to work the controls of the spotlight and Desmond Warren truly played the role of magician as he converted the stage into a real show with his sound, lighting and curtains. The Rincons got everyone up and dancing before, at intermission, and after the show. John Palminteri studied each act in preparation as the lights came up on stage. In the back, David Powdrell comforted anxious performers in the Green Room and I kept time at the side of the stage so performances moved along.

Ambassadors from our Rotary Club and the Interact Club met, greeted and ushered the audience to their seats. This included just about every member of the club decked out in black pants, white shirt and red tie or scarf. Paul, you were especially dapper as President of our Club. 24 members of our Interact Club under the dedicated and watchful eye of Richard Campos (our own Pied Piper) sold goodies, ushered, worked backstage with me, (thanks Thomas!) and did just about anything they were asked. Very impressive! During the show Matthew Berger and Tom Ligare snapped photos for us to remember in years to come. On stage, Preston Marx and Brent Crayon wowed us with a piano duet, while Nilo Fanucchi reminded us “To Dream the Impossible Dream”. Take down and clean up of chairs and the gym was done by Ryan Reed, Craig Murray and Richard Campos, Dave Durflinger, Donna Treloar, David Powdrell, and me. A vision we will never forget was watching Dave Durflinger, our city manager, mopping up (the gym floor) in the aftermath. Now, that’s what it takes to build a community and create a talent show. We may have even bridged a continent or two as we heard a few voices at the talent show that sounded like they were from the other side of the pond! Thank you, everyone, for your joined effort in creating an amazing 2nd Annual Carpinteria Talent Show! We know that many of you played multiple roles in getting this done. If we overlooked recognizing your name or the part you played, please forgive us. We could not have done this without you. See you next year!

Talent Show Co-Chair, David Powdrell, weighs in from his sick bed

I guess if I were to highlight anything pertaining to the talent show, it would be 4 numbers: 510: The number of emails that I originated and sent to Roland, Donna, Pat, Rich, Palminteri, Desmond, Welty, Boys & Girls Club and others specific to the show between 8/31/2010 and 2/19/2011. I hate to guess how many emails originated from Roland and the others. 45: The number of auditions that we sat through searching for the 25 most unique, local, interesting and exciting acts. $10,000: The amount of money that we set as our goal that the talent show would be able to give to the Carpinteria Rotary Charitable Foundation at the end of the day. Donna's still compiling data but I think we'll make it. $224,228: The cost of bypass surgery the day after the talent show. Gotta have some levity in there somewhere. Working with Roland is about as much fun as two grown adults should be allowed to have. We laughed long and hard through the preparations and meetings. Roland Rotz is my hero. Message from the Club Service Director

As I look back on the month of February, 2011, I see it has been a very busy month. Not only does Rotary play a major role with events in the community, but our town is one busy place. I’m finding it important to budget my time. Going to events in Carpinteria, other than Rotary events, gives us a chance to meet and invite others to investigate Rotary. I know I need to do this more often. Speaking of events, how about the TALENT SHOW led by DAVID POWDRELL, ROLAND ROTZ and crew. What a great event! Hard to believe, but the committee will begin shortly to plan next year’s show. Be

part of it. It is fun. I’d like to thank my committee again for their great help in making the event successful. Programs are moving along. If you have not done a program this year, well, come on in, “the waters fine”. We need programs for May and June, so don’t be left out. Thanks to all who help Richard “set-up” and of course a special thanks to him for his continued “on time efforts”. He is always on time. In closing, please remember David Powdrell and his wife, Valerie, as David recovers from his surgery. “We miss you David”. “Get Well”

Whilst attending Rotary a few weeks ago I happened to witness President Paul searching the room for guests to introduce and heard him proclaim that the folk sitting at a couple of the tables (including mine) were “regular” Rotarians. Now, Meredith McCurdy, who happens to have a mind that travels somewhat along the same path as mine (scary thought), looked at me and said, “Wow! That’s really amazing. How do you think he knows?” The answer, I believe, is all in the expression. You too can gain clairvoyance into this all important field with a little training. Below, you will find two photos – one of a “regular” Rotarian and one who is not. See if you can tell the difference.

See? Not really as hard as you would think.
