Meeting # 13630

Mick’s Mumblings- Quote for the week: Seek friends without faults and you will have no friends.

Great to see a “full house” almost at today’s meeting, we might actually break even on our breakfast costs for a change! Keep our treasurer happy ! Must be all those travellers returning from their adventures. Speaking of adventures, what a great talk this morning from Nick Broadbent Nick spoke about his trip to South America with his family An amazing adventure that most can only dream of. Just to have that time alone with family, no FB, no TV, no phones. The photos looked amazing, truly beautiful countryside. Put that on the bucket list !!Thanks for sharing Nick We have our first club assembly on Wednesday the 30thIf you wish to fill a specific roll or assist on a particular project or committee, please let me know. I will email out the draft listing I have prepared in the next day or two with an aim to finalising it by next Wednesday. We are moving forward with the Rotary Lodge project, thanks to Julian Smith and the help of the Sunrise club. We have an assurance from HNEH that they will see to ongoing maintenance of the facility. Our immediate roll is to renovate two rooms at the lodge up to 2017 standards. We will be calling for man power, and maybe some specific trade skills in the near future, so please assist where you can. Steve Massey and Rob Sharp are heading to Kokopo in New Guinea in the near future to help install an x-ray machine in their hospital. The club will also be seeking a matching grant from the Rotary foundation for our $30000US to help train hospital staff and provide an extension to facilities at St Mary’s Hospital. Good Luck Lads!! See you next week Kind Regards Michael Smith

-EPIPHANIES - What a wonderful night Congratulations to Di Hall and Rob McDougall. For the MUSICAL

Trekking the Andes with the Family and Huskies. A tremendous talk this morning from local dentist Nick Broadbent. He, his wife and 4 sons undertook a 5 day sledding trek in the Andes, starting at North Patagonia in Chile. For 5 days they underwent training with the huskies ,learning how to manage their team and bonding with them. In the 12 days the whole expedition took they were in virtual isolation, seeing only one other person, his horse and 2 dogs which the huskies apparently didn't like. There were 6 Huskies per team and after training and bonding with each person having control and management they were off Or the dogs were off and all the Broadbents followed.

The Huskies each weighed about 35 kg and pulled a sled carrying about 70kg and a team member. The dogs were fed twice a day and drank warmed water. They slept out in the snow and seemed quite comfortable whilst the Broadbents slept in tents – They were warm !!!!! Sometimes it was -9 with a further wind chill factor Going downhill presents more problems than ascending as the sled could be hard to control and keep upright. Nick commented that his wife Jen was very fit and overcame any fears of being unable to manage as she was the only lady in the team. This was a great family venture and a challenge for a wonderful family to treasure for a lifetime. Nick was introduced by Brian Thompson who also wrote this report.

On Monday 31 July 2017, 5 members, Jim Raymond, Phil Penman, Liz Gill, Jane Bradford and myself together with 1 partner, Robyn Penman, attended a meeting in Port Macquarie where we were addressed by the International President of Rotary, Mr Ian H.S. Riseley. I must say that I am not a person who looks for these types of talks but I

was encouraged to attend by the fact that Ian Riseley was purported to be a good speaker.

The meeting was attended by around 250 people from around our District and was thoroughly enjoyable, meeting a lot of similarly aged individuals.

Ian is a natural leader and spoke well, not like a stuffed shirt, but as one who could communicate in a relaxed manner and use his Australian humour to deliver his message and outlook. He spoke of all of the programs that Rotary is involved with around the world and the achievements that have been made to date. Ian spoke of his beginnings in Rotary as a guest speaker at his local Victorian Rotary club when asked to join in the forming of a new club some 40 years ago.We all enjoyed the fellowship and hearing about what is happening on the ‘grand scale’ throughout Rotary.I would thoroughly recommend that if you get another chance to hear Ian speak you take it.

It appears some of the latest editions of the Rotary Down Under magazine have gone to odd addresses. If you are effected in any way please let Brodie Shield, the Executive

Secretary, know and he will fix it. “THERE ISN’T A PERSON ANYWHERE WHO ISN’T CAPABLE OF DOING MORE THAN HE THINKS HE CAN.” Henry Ford “

The Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to

encourage and foster:

• FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

• SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

• THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

• FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
