Governor Dr. Juan F. orteGa • editorial

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

December is Family Month, a time when we enjoy spending time with our families more than usual and a time when we recog-nize Rotary’s large and expand-ing family. The family of Rotary goes beyond our children and spouses. The family of Rotary is not just 1,220,115 Rotarians in 34,558 clubs. We are also 396,980 Interactors, 169,395 Rotaractors, and 186,093 Rotary Community Corps members. The family of Rotary represents many aspects of the organiza-tion: The district leadership team, the clubs in the district, the youth exchange students, the hundreds of community non-profits and nongovernmental organizations that Rotary clubs have forged partnerships with. The family of Rotary is very strong and thanks to our efforts it continues to grow as we keep expanding our network!Just like we can count on our own families, the world relies on the family of Rotary to make the world a better place or like PRIP Richard King says: to make God’s work on earth. Sometimes with extraordinary efforts like

Rotary’s campaign to eradicate polio, or sometimes with im-pactful efforts that seem simple like mosquito nets that protect children from being infected with Malaria. Rotary is made up of members that care about each other, their own communi-ties and the world. And caring is what family is all about. I want to take this opportunity to encourage each one of you to welcome and include non-Rotarian family members into the Family of Rotary through service and fellowship activi-ties to promote club wellbeing and better communities. Rotary should make time for families, not take time away from fami-lies. A great way to bring the Family of Rotary together is to host Rotary Days. The concept is simple: hold a fun, informal event in your community to introduce the public to your club and Rotary. You’ll not only improve Rotary’s image in your community, you’ll also boost interest in joining your club. Any club, big or small, can host a Ro-tary Day. Neighboring clubs can pool their resources and co-host an event. Here are some ideas for your Rotary Day:

• An outdoor picnic or barbecue• A sporting event or concert• An event associated with a public parade or festival• An event at a museum, art gallery, or cultural center• A reception or buffet dinner

Share your Rotary Day photos on social media using #Rota-ryDay, or upload them to your Flickr stream and share it with Rotary on our Family of Rotary Flickr group. Tell us who is in each photo and where it was taken, and you just might see it on Rotary media, including in The Rotarian and regional maga-zines.

Wishing you the joy of family, the gift of friends, and the best of everything in 2015!

Important Updates to Rotary GrantsDear Governors, Governors-elect and District Rotary Foundation Committee Chairs:

I am writing to share some updates about Rotary grants. The Rotary Foundation Trustees met last month and made the following decisions:• Expanded eligibility for district grants. Effective immediately, district grants can now fund youth pro-grams (including Rotary Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract, or Interact), construction (including low cost shelters), travel for staff of cooperating organizations, scholar orientation seminars, grant management seminars, and activities primarily implemented by an organization other than Rotary.• Amended area of focus definition. The Trustees updated the wording in the economic and community development area of focus definition to provide clarity. Community infrastructure projects continue to be ineligible, unless they result in a significant increase in the ability of community members to produce and distribute goods and services that create personal resources.• Phased out packaged grants. Despite a number of successes, an evaluation of the organization’s grants and partnerships models revealed notable changes between the original goals of packaged grants and the actual experience of Rotarians during the course of the pilot period and beyond. Such variation resulted in significant challenges in packaged grant implementation and scalability, as well as barriers to Rotarian participation. Therefore, the Trustees agreed to allow the current agreements for packaged grant options with the Foundation’s strategic partners to expire at the end of their current terms, ending packaged grants when all active grants are closed.

As always, more information about Rotary grants is available online at www.rotary.org/myrotary/grants.

If you have questions, email the Rotary Support Center at [email protected]. Thank you for all that you do to supportThe Rotary Foundation!Sincerely,

Abby McNearRotary Grants Manager Tel 1.847.425.5656 rotary.orgcc: Rotary Foundation Trustees and Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinators

Paul Harris Fellow awarded to Two Leaders On the Fort Pierce Rotary Park Playground Rebuild

On November 20th, the Rotary Club of Fort Pierce celebrated the one year an-niversary of the playground rebuild at Rotary Park and awarding two Paul Harris Fellows. Over two years ago the Rotary Club of Fort Pierce contacted by the St. Lucie County Parks and Recre-ation Department. They stated the nineteen year

old playground at Rotary Park had become a haz-ard and could no longer be repair. They wanted it torn down! For a group of Rotarians, that only meant we had to build again.Dedicated Rotarians, including Joey Trefelner, Bruce Abernethy, Stephen Neill, Joe Lott, Doug Davis, Earl Gordon, Dan Noelke, and Linda Sampson signed

up and committed their selves to the rebuild the playground. We all contributed what we could; be it a few hours, a few days and even a few months; but Joey Trefelner, General Coordinator, and Bruce Abernethy, Fundrais-ing Coordinator stepped up to contribute over a year, which is what it took to run the show and raise the

money. What they envi-sioned and subsequently accomplished was amaz-ing. In recognition of their dedication to the rebuilding of the playground at Rotary Park, the Board and mem-bers of the Rotary Club of Fort Pierce, awarded Joey Trefelner and Bruce Aber-nethy each a Paul Harris Fellow.

Titusville Rotary Club Awards Paul Harris Fellow

Local Rotarian Sunny Aggarwal Given Honor

Titusville, Florida – The Rotary Club of Titusville has awarded Rotarian member Nitin “Sunny” Aggarwal with the designation of a Paul Harris Fellow, acknowledging his work in community service endeavors with the club. Mr. Aggarwal joined the club as a Rotarian this year, and is the owner of Hopkins Pharmacy in Titusville. The presentation was made on September 26, 2014 by Stan Retz, chairman of the club’s Rotary Foundation committee.

According to Club President Bill Van Engelenberg, the recipient represents the highest ideals of Rotary, which emphasizes “service above self.”

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition was established by Rotary International in 1957 to show appreciation for contributions to the world-wide community service organization. Many notable figures have been named Paul Harris Fellows in recent decades, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, U.S. Astronaut and Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell, and the discoverer of the Polio vaccine, Dr. Jonas Salk. My name is angelica Blakely and i will be at your service as Public image Chair in our district. as part of rotary’s new strategy we are trying to strengthen our image so that everyone will understand what rotary stands for, how we’re different, and why it matters.i encourage all Public image Chairs for each club to download from rotary Brand Center the Messaging Guidelines Brochure, subtitled the Voice, and Visual rotary Guidelines, to share with club members. in this brochure you will find powerful tools to do “What we need to do”, which is to tell our great story in a way that ensures our actions and supports our words. and if your club doesn’t have Public image Chairs please ask your president to appoint someone. one of the best ways to bring our story to life is to simply tell about it. With this in mind we will have a space in the district newsletter called “telling You Story”. it will be a forum for individuals to tell about the day they became a true rotarian. Submissions will need to be no more than 400 words and, if possible, should include the author’s picture. Stories like these can inspire others and help to con-nect people to one another. Please, ask your P.I chair to send them to me at: [email protected]

JON A. KAYE

President Elect Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton Chief Operating Officer Kaye Communications, Inc. 2255 Glades Road, Suite 324A Boca Raton, FL 33431 I first joined the Rotary Club of Boca Raton in 2004. I have served as a board member most of my active years. It was and still is very rewarding to work side by side with other Rotarians whom you really get to know well as “good deed doers”.

Whether it’s working on a committee for a fund-raising event like OPAL AWARDS, developing a major event to honor the Greatest Generation, “Honor Your Doctor”, a Golf Tournament, sponsoring a Downtown Boca Auto show, delivering meals at Christmas to those who are shut in, collecting clothes and food items to pack up and send to New Jersey after the Hurricane, or serving as a Rotary Board Member, the experience is unlike any other.

Rotary provides the opportunity to make great relationships and provide an organized method for one to be philanthropic and make a significant impact when as an individual one may not have the resources or the opportunities to help on their own.

A defining moment for me was when I became part of the founding board member of the Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton in 2011 with our mission of Health & Wellness in the community; we have been able to make a significant impact in the Boca community with our Golf Tournament and annual “Honor Your Doctor” luncheons. We were able to donate monies to FAU Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Palm Beach State College and Lynn University.

Like any organization, you get out of it, what you put into it. It is not just about going to a weekly lunch. Yes, we do have great guest speakers at our luncheons; wonderfully entertaining socials where we all get to enjoy a relaxed environment reinforcing our relationships, and participate in Rotary International educational seminars where we can meet with Rotarians from all over our district 6930. All these various events provide opportunities to build friendships with like-minded people that last a lifetime.

The Rotary Club Downtown Boca Raton is dedicated to impacting the Boca Raton Community through the efforts of “Service Above Self.” Its main mission is Health And Wellness. For more information about the Club, including how to become a member, visit www.rotarydowntownbocaraton.org
