Harriet Taylor Upton (AKA
Diane Sauer) spoke at the
December 6, 1919 meeting of the
Warren Women’s Suffrage
Association. She indicated that
she was so looking forward to the
suffrage movement march being
held that afternoon. She was
very excited to see so many
members in attendance, but was
quite distressed that some felt
the need to dress as men in order
to stay safe. Harriet individually
addressed these women, including
Candy Bednar, Antoinette Cafaro,
Mrs. LaPolla, and a newcomer
(who even went so far as to shave
off her hair!), and encouraged
them to stand up for their rights and give it all they’ve got during the
march. She also announced that Christina Shape was sadly unable to
join them, as she was injured during the last march.
As you all know, Harriet lived in Warren for a while but recently
relocated. In 1880, her father was elected to the United States
Congress as a Republican from Ohio, succeeding President James
Garfield in the position. This provided Harriet an entry into the world
of politics and an opportunity to meet leading political leaders, including
Susan B. Anthony who brought her into the movement to win the
woman’s right to vote. Harriet reported that she feels we are getting
close to getting that amendment ratified, but we have to remain
diligent in our protests!
Harriet was a key organizer and the first president of the
Suffrage Association of Warren, as well as a member of the National
Woman’s Suffrage Association. In 1891, she hosted, in her home, a
conclave of women seeking equal rights with men. In 1894, she was
elected treasurer of the NWSA and brought the headquarters of that
association to Warren, where it remained from 1899 to 1908. This is
Harriet’s second term as president of the Ohio Woman’s Suffrage.
