Important Safety InformationThese are common practices that may or may not be applicable to the products described in this manual.

Safety at All TimesThoroughly read and understand the instructions given in this manual before operation.Do not allow anyone to operate this implement who has not fully read and comprehended this manual and who has not been properly trained in the safe operation of the implement. The operator must not use drugs

or alcohol as they can change the alertness or coordination of that person while operating equipment. The operator should, if taking over-the-counter drugs, seek medical advice on whether he/she can safely operate the equipment.

Thoroughly read and understand the “Safety Label” section, read all instructions noted on them.

The operator should be familiar with all functions of the tractor and attached implement, and be able to handle emergencies quickly.

Make sure all guards and shields are in place and secured before operating implement.

Keep all bystanders away from equipment and work area.

Start tractor from the driver’s seat with hydraulic controls in neutral.

Operate tractor and controls from the driver’s seat only.

Never dismount from a moving tractor or leave tractor unattended with engine running.

Do not allow anyone to stand between tractor and implement while backing up to implement.

Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from power-driven parts.

While transporting and operating equipment, watch out for objects overhead and along side such as fences, trees, buildings, wires, etc.

Do not turn tractor so tight as to cause hitched implement to ride up on the tractor’s rear wheel.

Store implement in an area where children normally do not play.

Look For The Safety Alert SymbolThe SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL indicates there is a potential hazard to personal safety involved and extra safety precaution must be taken. When you see this symbol, be alert and carefully read the message that follows it. In addition to design and configuration of equipment, hazard control, and accident prevention are dependent upon the awareness, concern, prudence, and proper training of personnel involved in the operation, transport, maintenance, and storage of equipment.

Use A Safety Chain A safety chain will help control

drawn machinery should it separate from the tractor drawbar.

Use a chain with the strength rating equal to or greater than the gross weight of the towed implement.

Attach the chain to the tractor drawbar support or other specified anchor location. Allow only enough slack in the chain to permit turning.

Do not use safety chain for towing.

Tire Safety Tire changing can be dangerous

and should be performed by trained personnel using the correct tools and equipment.

When inflating tires, use a clip-on chuck and extension hose long enough to allow you to stand to one side and NOT in front of or over the tire assembly. Use a safety cage if available.

When removing and installing wheels, use wheel handling equipment adequate for the weight involved.

Practice Safe Maintenance Understand procedure before doing

work. Refer to the Operator’s Manual for additional information.

Work on a level surface in a clean dry area that is well-lit.

Use properly grounded electrical outlets and tools.

Use correct tools and equipment for the job that are in good condition.

Lower implement to the ground and follow all shutdown procedures before leaving the operator’s seat to perform maintenance.

Allow equipment to cool before working on it.

Disconnect battery ground cable (-) before servicing or adjusting electrical systems or before welding on implement.

Do not grease or oil implement while it is in operation.

Inspect all parts. Make certain parts are in good condition & installed properly.

Replace parts on this implement with genuine Land Pride parts only. Do not alter this implement in a way which will adversely affect its performance.

Remove buildup of grease, oil, or debris.

Remove all tools and unused parts from equipment before operation.

Transport Safely Comply with state and local laws. Use towing vehicle and trailer of

adequate size and capacity. Secure equipment towed on a trailer with tie downs and chains.

Sudden braking can cause a towed trailer to swerve and upset. Reduce speed if towed trailer is not equipped with brakes.

Avoid contact with any over head utility lines or electrically charged conductors.

Always drive with load on end of loader arms low to the ground.

Always drive straight up and down steep inclines with heavy end of a tractor with loader attachment on the “uphill” side.

Engage park brake when stopped on an incline.

Maximum transport speed for an attached equipment is 20 mph. DO NOT EXCEED. Never travel at a speed which does not allow adequate control of steering and stopping. Some rough terrains require a slower speed.

As a guideline, use the following maximum speed weight ratios for attached equipment:

20 mph when weight of attached equipment is less than or equal to the weight of machine towing the equipment.10 mph when weight of attached equipment exceeds weight of machine towing equipment but not more than double the weight.

IMPORTANT: Do not tow a load that is more than double the weight of the vehicle towing the load.

Avoid High Pressure Fluids Hazard Escaping fluid under pressure can

penetrate the skin causing serious injury.

Avoid the hazard by relieving pressure before disconnecting hydraulic lines or performing work on the system.

Make sure all hydraulic fluid connections are tight and all hydraulic hoses and lines are in good condition before applying pressure to the system.

Use a piece of paper or cardboard, NOT BODY PARTS, to check for suspected leaks.

Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working with hydraulic systems.

DO NOT DELAY. If an accident occurs, see a doctor familiar with this type of injury immediately. Any fluid injected into the skin or eyes must be treated within a few hours or gangrene may result.

Wear Protective Equipment Wear protective clothing and

equipment appropriate for the job such as safety shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, and ear plugs.

Clothing should fit snug without fringes and pull strings to avoid entanglement with moving parts.

Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause hearing impairment or hearing loss. Wear suitable hearing protection such as earmuffs or earplugs.

Operating equipment safely requires the operator’s full attention. Avoid wearing radio headphones while operating machinery.

Keep Riders Off Machinery Never carry riders or use

machinery as a person lift. Riders obstruct operator’s view. Riders could be struck by foreign

objects or thrown from the equipment.

Never allow children to operate machinery.

Use Seat Belt and ROPS Operate only power machines

equipped with a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) and seat belt.

Keep folding ROPS in the “locked up” position at all times.

Fasten seat belt snugly and securely to help protect against serious injury or death from falling and machine overturn.

Wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, and ear plugs.

Prepare for Emergencies Be prepared if a fire starts. Keep a first aid kit and fire

extinguisher handy. Keep emergency numbers for

doctor, ambulance, hospital, and fire department near phone.

Use Safety Lights and Devices Slow moving tractors,

self-propelled equipment, and towed equipment can create a hazard when driven on public roads. They are difficult to see, especially at night.

Flashing warning lights and turn signals are recommended whenever driving on public roads.

Safety LabelsYour Rotary Tiller comes equipped with all safety labels in place. They were designed to help you safely operate your implement. Read and follow their directions.

1. Keep all safety labels clean and legible.2. Refer to this section for proper label placement. Replace

specified by Land Pride. When ordering new components make sure the correct safety labels are included in the request.

4. Refer to this section for proper label placement.To install new labels:a. Clean surface area where label is to be placed.

b. Spray soapy water onto the cleaned area.

c. Peel backing from label and press label firmly onto the surface.

d. Squeeze out air bubbles with edge of a credit card or with a similar type of straight edge.

IntroductionLand Pride welcomes you to the growing family of new
product owners. This implement has been designed with care and built by skilled workers using quality materials. Proper assembly, maintenance, and safe operating practices will help you get years of satisfactory use from the implement.
ApplicationThe RTA20 & RTR20 Series Rotary Tillers are just right for home gardening, landscape work, vegetable farming, or food plot maintenance. Available in three widths, the 20 Series Rotary Tiller turns up hard packed ground, leaving a perfect seedbed for gardens to grass. Land Pride’s RTA20 forward rotating tiller can work in all types of ground conditions, with best results being obtained in fairly mellow conditions. The RTR20 Series Rotary Tillers feature a reverse tilling action for tougher ground conditions. The reverse action “sucks” the tiller into the ground, which prohibits the tiller from “walking” on hard ground. The RTR20 Series Tiller also incorporates spring loaded “sifting” rods behind the tines to help bury large rocks and debris. The reverse action of the rotor brings material up and over the top. Rocks and vegetation cannot get through the sifting rods so they fall first. Soil continues to get sifted before it falls, building a layer of large to small dirt clods burying the rocks and vegetation. Reverse tilling can reduce the number of trips needed to turn the soil over.

Section 1: Assembly & Set-Up

Dealer Preparations

! CAUTIONTo prevent serious injury:

To avoid bodily injury caused by accidental falling of tiller, stabilize unit with park stand, support stands, and/or blocks.

This unit is shipped almost completely assembled. Carefully follow instructions for final assembly. Before attempting assembly check the following items. Having all the needed parts and equipment readily at hand will speed up your assembly task and will make the job as safe as possible.

• Check for fasteners and pins that were shipped with the tiller. All hardware coming from the factory has been installed in the location where it will be used. If a part or fastener is temporarily removed for assembly reasons, remember where it goes. Keep the parts separated.

• Have ready for the assembly task a fork lift or loader along with chains and safety stands sized for the job.

• Have a minimum of 2 people at hand during assembly.

Tractor RequirementsThis tiller is designed with a 3-point category I hitch. Horsepower rating of tractor should not exceed 50 power take-off horsepower.

! WARNINGTo prevent serious injury or death:

Light weight tractors with rear attached implements may need weights added to the front to maintain steering control and prevent serious injury or death. Consult your tractor Operator’s Manual to determine proper weight requirements and maximum weight limitations.

Torque RequirementsCheck to see that all nuts are tightened. Refer to “Torque Values Chart” on page 28 to determine correct torque values for common bolts.

Park Stand AssemblyRefer to Figure 1-1 on page 9:



1. Insert park stand (#2) in support tube.

2. Adjust park stand to a height that will support the tiller level while resting on its skid shoes.

3. Secure park stand with wire retaining pin (#20). Make sure wire retainer is hooked over the end of the retaining pin.


3-Point Hitch AssemblyRefer to Figure 1-1 on page 9:1. Install right and left-hand top hitch halves (#3 & #4) to

the inside of hitch mounting bars with 5/8"-11 x 1 1/2" GR5 hex head bolts (#11), hex nuts (#14), and lock washers (#18). Do not tighten bolts at this time.

2. Insert top hitch spacer tube (#1) between the left and right-hand hitch halves as shown and secure with 3/4"-10 x 4" GR5 hex bolt (#12), nut (#15), and lock washer (#19).

3. Tighten all bolts (#11 & #12) to correct torque values.

4. Attach lower hitch clevises (#24) to tiller main frame with 1/2" u-bolts and nylock hex nuts (#23). Do not tighten bolts.

5. Position center of lower hitch clevises (#24) 14 1/8" away from center of gearbox input shaft. When positioned correctly, center of lower hitch clevises should be 28 1/4" apart. Once centered, tighten nylock nuts (#23) to the correct torque.

6. Insert lower hitch pins (#21) into lower hitch clevis and secure with linchpins (#22).

Manual Storage ContainerRefer to Figure 1-1 on page 9:Attach manual storage container (#26) to the left-hand top hitch half (#3) with 1/4"-20 x 1" GR5 hex head bolts (#27), flat washers (#28), and hex nylock nuts (#29). Tighten nylock nuts to the correct torque

Driveline Guard Refer to Figure 1-1 on page 9:1. Assemble clamp (#5) to plate (#8) with one of the

wing bolts (#9).

2. Assemble driveline guard (#6) to the top hitch halves (#3 & #4) with four wing bolts (#9).

3. Install cover (#7) to tiller with wing bolts (#9).

4. Fasten plate (#8) to driveline guard (#6) with 5/16" bolt (#10), flat washer (#17), lock washer (#16) & nut (#13). Make sure clamp (#5) catches front lip of cover (#7).

Tractor Hook-Up

! DANGERTo prevent serious injury or death:

A Crushing Hazard exists while hooking-up and unhooking implement. Do not allow anyone to stand between tractor and implement while backing-up to implement or pulling away from implement. Do not operate hydraulic 3-point lift controls while someone is directly behind tractor or near implement.


Lifting unit more than 14" above ground with power take-off engaged or engaging power take-off with unit higher than 14" above ground can break the driveline and could cause flying projectiles.



NOTE: Land Pride’s Quick Hitch can be attached to the tractor to provide quick and easy 3-point hook-up and detachment. See your nearest Land Pride dealer to purchase a Quick-Hitch.


Tractor HFigur

Refer to Figure 1-2:1. Back tractor up to tiller until lower 3-point lift arms are

aligned with tiller hitch clevises.

2. Secure tractor’s 3-point lower hitch arms to the lower hitch clevises using 7/8" diameter hitch pins. Secure hitch pins with linchpins.

3. Secure tractor’s top center link to tiller hitch plates using 3/4" diameter hitch pin (supplied by customer).

4. Place a level on the end plate and adjust tractor’s top center link to level tiller from front to back.

5. Place level on the square tube and adjust one of the two tractor’s lower 3-point arms up or down to level tiller from left to right.

6. Remove park stand wire lock pin and slide park stand up until lower hole in park stand is above the stand mount. Reinsert wire lock pin in hole above stand mount and secure with wire lock.

7. Raise tiller fully up with 3-point lift. Measure the distance tines are off the ground. If distance exceeds 14", adjust tractor’s 3-point lift height limiter until tines will not lift higher than 14 inches off the ground.

8. Continue with “Driveline Installation” on page 11.

Driveline InstallationRefer to Figure 1-3, Figure 1-4 & Figure 1-5:The tiller driveline is coupled to the tractor and implement shafts with either push pin couplers, pull collar couplers, or a combination of both and with either a shear bolt or slip clutch on one end for protection from shock loads.

Always engage power take-off at low engine rpm to minimize start-up torque. Drivelines with friction slip clutches must go through a “run-in” operation prior to initial use and after long periods of inactivity. See “Driveline Protection” on page 18 for detailed instructions on maintaining the slip clutch.

If the Rotary Tiller is used on more than one tractor, an additional driveline may be required - especially if a Quick Hitch is used.

• Do not use a power take-off adapter. A power take-off adapter will increase strain on the tractor’s power take-off shaft resulting in possible damage to shaft and driveline. It will also defeat the purpose of the tractor’s power take-off shield and could cause bodily injury or death.

• Always disengage power take-off, place tractor in park or set park brake, shut tractor engine off, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop before dismounting tractor.

• Some tractors are equipped with multi power take-off speeds. Do not exceed 540 rpm power take-off speed or equipment breakage may result.

IMPORTANT: The driveline must be lubricated before putting it into service. Refer to “Lubrication” on page 22.

IMPORTANT: Prior to initial operation and after 10 days of inactivity, slip friction disks to remove oxidation and moisture. Moisture allows disks to slip easily. Oxidation can prevent disk from slipping causing driveline damage. This damage is NOT covered under the warranty. See “Driveline Protection” on page 18.

1. Park tractor and tiller on a level surface. Raise tiller to align gearbox input shaft level with tractor power take-off shaft. Securely block tiller at this height to keep unit from lowering while attaching the driveline.

2. Place gear selector in park, shut tractor engine off, set park brake and remove switch key.

3. Remove gearbox shaft protector from end of gearbox shaft and slide slip clutch or shear bolt end of driveline over gearbox input shaft. Secure to gearbox with driveline yoke locking device.

4. Slide other end of driveline over tractor power take-off shaft. Secure driveline with yoke locking device.

5. Move driveline yokes back and forth to ensure both ends are secured to the shafts. Reattach any yoke that is loose.

6. Attach safety chain on the outer driveline shield to the tractor frame to restrict outer shield from rotating. Re-latch safety chain to outer driveline shield.

7. Attach safety chain on the inner driveline shield to the tiller frame to restrict inner shield from rotating. Re-latch safety chain to inner driveline shield.

Check Driveline Collapsible LengthRefer to Figure 1-6:

1. Make sure driveline is installed properly before checking driveline collapsed length (Refer to “Driveline Installation” on page 11).

2. With driveline level, measure 1" (“B” dimension) back from universal joint shield to end of outer driveline shield as shown in Figure 1-6.

a. If measurement is less than 1", shorten driveline.

b. If measurement is 1" or more, skip to “Check Driveline Maximum Length” on page 13.

IMPORTANT: The power take-off shaft and gearbox input shaft must be aligned and level with each other when checking driveline minimum length. A driveline that is too long can damage tractor and implement.

NOTE: If driveline is too long to fit between tractor and tiller, skip to “Shorten Driveline” on this page.

IMPORTANT: A driveline that is too long can bottom out causing structural damage to tractor and implement. Always check driveline collapsed length during initial setup, when connecting to a different tractor, and when alternating between using a quick hitch and a standard 3-point hitch. More than one driveline may be required to fit all applications.

Shorten DrivelineRefer to Figure 1-6:Be sure to first check driveline collapsed length as instructed above. If required, shorten driveline as follows:

1. Unhook driveline from tractor power take-off shaft and pull outer and inner drivelines apart.

2. Reattach outer driveline to tractor power take-off shaft. Pull on inner and outer drivelines to be sure universal joints are properly secured.

3. Hold inner and outer drivelines parallel to each other:

a. Measure 1" (“B” dimension) back from outer driveline universal joint shield and make a mark at this location on the inner driveline shield.

b. Measure 1" (“B” dimension) back from the inner driveline universal joint shield and make a mark at this location on the outer driveline shield.

4. Remove driveline and safety chains from tractor and gearbox.

5. Measure from end of inner shield to scribed mark (“X” dimension). Cut off inner shield at the mark. Cut same amount off the inner shaft (“X1” dimension).

6. Measure from end of outer shield to scribed mark (“Y” dimension). Cut off outer shield at the mark. Cut same amount off the outer shaft (“Y1” dimension).

7. Remove all burrs and cuttings.

8. Continue with “Check Driveline Maximum Length” on page 13.

The driveline maximum allowable length must, when fully extended, have a minimum overlap of the profile tubes by not less than 1/3 the free length with both inner and outer profile tubes being of equal length.

2. Slowly engage tractor hydraulic 3-point control lever to lower tiller while checking for sufficient drawbar clearance. Move drawbar ahead, aside, or remove if required.

• Lifting unit more than 14" above ground with power take-off engaged or engaging power take-off with unit higher than 14" above ground can break the driveline and could cause flying projectiles.

• A rotating driveline must not exceed an angle of 25 degrees up or down, and never engage a driveline while at an angle exceeding 25 degrees up or down. The driveline can break and send projectiles causing serious bodily injury or death.

Safety Information

• Keep yourself and all others away from rotating tines and drive train. Always disengage power take-off and lockout power source before making adjustments or servicing the tiller. A person’s body, hair, or clothing can become entangled in rotating components causing serious bodily injury or death.

• Keep away from rotating hex drive shaft located between gearbox and chaincase. A person can become entangled in the shaft causing serious bodily injury or death.

• Make all 3-point hydraulic adjustments from the tractor seat. Never make hydraulic adjustments while standing alongside the tractor or behind the tractor.

• All guards and shields must be installed and in good working condition while operating implement to avoid injury or death.

• Do not operate a broken or bent driveline. Such a driveline can break apart while rotating at high speeds causing serious injury or death. Always remove implement from service until the damaged driveline can be repaired or replaced.

• Clear area of debris before tilling. Mark any potential hazards that cannot be removed such as tree stumps, post, rocks, holes, and drop-offs with a visible flag.

• Tine impact on objects can throw projectiles resulting in bodily injury or death. Do not point discharge toward people, animals, or buildings and keep people and animals away from tiller during operation.

• Do not till across steep inclines exceeding 15 degrees. The action of the tines being forced down into the ground can cause the tractor to roll-over resulting in serious injury or death. Consult your tractor’s manual for acceptable inclines the tractor is capable of traveling across.

• Always disengage power take-off immediately after lifting tiller above ground level. Never operate tiller in the raised position. The tiller can discharge objects at high speeds resulting in injury or death.

• Never carry riders on the tractor or implement. Riders can obstruct the operator’s view, be struck by foreign objects, pinched by moving components, thrown by sudden shifts in movement, entangled in rotating components, and/or fall.

• Allow only persons to operate this implement who have fully read and comprehended this manual, who have been properly trained in the safe operation of this implement, and who are age 16 or older. Serious injury or death can result from the inability to read, understand, and follow instructions provided in this manual.

• Never make contact with underground utilities such as electrical power lines, gas lines, phone lines, etc. They can cause serious injury or death from electrocution, explosion, or fire. If in doubt, call your local utility companies before digging so that they can mark the location of underground services in the area. For contact information, see Dig Safe in the “Important Safety Information” starting on page 1.

• Keep front rubber dirt deflector on the RTR tiller in place while operating the unit. Objects can be thrown forward toward the operator causing serious bodily injury or death.


• Do not use implement as a work platform. It is not properly designed or guarded for this use and can result in a serious injury or death.

• Do not use a power take-off adapter. A power take-off adapter will increase strain on the tractor’s power take-off shaft resulting in possible damage to shaft and driveline. It will also defeat the purpose of the tractor’s power take-off shield and could cause bodily injury or death.

• Use Rotary Tiller for its intended purpose only. Do not use tiller to lift or carry objects; to pull fence posts, stumps, or other objects; or to tow other equipment. Doing so can damage the tiller, cause serious bodily injury, or death.

• Always disengage power take-off, place tractor in park or set park brake, shut tractor engine off, remove ignition key, and wait for all moving parts to stop before dismounting tractor.

• Make certain all driveline yokes are securely fastened at both ends. A loose yoke can work free allowing the driveline to rotate uncontrollably causing implement damage and bodily injury or death to anyone nearby.

• Perform schedule maintenance. Check for loose hardware, missing parts, broken parts, structural cracks, and high wear. Make repairs before putting the implement back into service. Serious breakdowns can result in injury or death.

• Some tractors are equipped with multi power take-off speeds. Do not exceed 540 rpm power take-off speed or equipment breakage may result.

IMPORTANT: Make sure all safety labels are in their proper location and in good condition before operation. Follow all directions on the safety labels.

IMPORTANT: Do not alter tiller in a way which will adversely affect its performance or reliability or use the tiller for a purpose for which it was not designed.

IMPORTANT: To keep the park stand from being damaged, always store stand in the transport position before moving tractor with tiller attached.

Transporting


When traveling on roadways, transport in such a way that other vehicles may pass you safely. Use accessory lights, clean reflectors, and a slow moving vehicle sign that is visible from the back to warn operators in other vehicles of your presence. Always comply with all federal, state, and local laws.

1. When raising the tiller to the transport position, be sure that driveline does not contact tractor or tiller. Adjust the tractor’s 3-point hitch lift height so that the tiller tines are not lifted more than 14 inches off the ground to prevent damage to the driveline.

2. Remove wire retaining pin from park stand and raise park stand up to the bottom hole. Reinsert wire retaining pin. Make certain wire retainer is caught over end of pin.

3. Be sure to reduce tractor ground speed when turning; and, leave enough clearance so the tiller does not contact obstacles such as buildings, trees, or fences.

4. Select a safe ground travel speed when transporting from one area to another. When traveling on roadways, transport in such a way that faster moving vehicles may pass you safely.

5. When traveling over rough or hilly terrain, shift tractor to a lower gear.

Park Rotary TillerThe following steps should be taken when preparing to store the tiller or unhitch it from the tractor.

1. Park tiller on a level, solid area.

2. Shut off tractor engine and engage park brake.

3. Set park stand to desired height for re-hook-up and install pin to lock stand in place.

4. Unhitch tiller from tractor.


A parked tiller that is unstable can tip over causing serious bodily injury or death. Place support blocks under the tiller as needed to prevent it from tipping over onto a child or adult.

5. Check tiller for stability by physically applying pressure at the hitch plates to see if it will tip forward or backward. If the tiller moves in either direction, then block under the tiller as needed to prevent that movement.

6. See “Long-Term Storage” on page 21 for additional information on long term storage of your tiller.

IMPORTANT: Always disengage power take-off before raising tiller to transport position.



General Operating NotesBefore beginning to till the following inspection should be performed:

1. Check oil level in gearbox and chaincase. Refer to “Lubrication” on page 22.

2. Check that all plugs have been replaced properly in the gearbox and chaincase.

3. Be sure all tiller tines, bolts, and nuts are tight.

4. Be certain all guards, shields, and dirt deflectors are in place and secure.

5. Grease driveline shaft and all other grease fittings. Refer to “Lubrication” on page 22.

6. Clear area to be tilled of rocks, branches, and other foreign objects.

7. Tall grass and weeds should be mowed before tilling.

8. Do not engage power take-off at full throttle. Once engaged, increase throttle to 540 power take-off speed. Tiller tines will cut better at 540 power take-off speed than at reduced throttle.

9. Tilling should not be done in wet conditions as soil will stick to tines.

10. At first begin tilling at a slow forward speed and shift up as ground conditions warrant.

11. Operated tiller with deck level to the ground.

12. Tiller should be operated with the tiller deck level to the ground.

13. Tiller tines will cut better when operating the tractor at full 540 rpm power take-off speed than at reduced throttle.

14. After tilling the first 50 feet, stop and check to see that the tiller is adjusted properly.

15. Do not make turns or attempt to back up while tiller is in the ground. See important note below.

16. Do not engage power take-off with machine in the fully raised or lowered position.

17. Periodically check for foreign objects wrapped around the rotor shaft and remove them after disengaging power take-off, turning off tractor engine, and removing ignition key.

IMPORTANT: Turning or backing up with rotary tines in the ground will damage the tiller.


General Operating InstructionsBefore using your Land Pride RTA20 Series Rotary Tiller, you should have completely read the Operator’s Manual, properly attached the Tiller to the tractor, cut the Drive-line to proper length, Run-in the clutch, and gone through the Operating Checklist. If you have missed any of these steps, please complete them before proceeding.

Now that you have properly prepared yourself and your tiller, it’s time to do some tilling. Carefully drive tractor to the site where you intend to till. You should have already cleaned this site of any large limbs, rocks, trash, metal, or extraneous debris. Best results will be achieved if you have mounted your tiller offset to the left far enough to cover the tread of your left tractor wheel. Line the tractor up just to the right of center on your tillage plot. You will be working from the center out and always turning to the left to line up for your next pass. Lower tiller half way to the ground and reduce your tractor engine speed to about one quarter throttle. Engage power take-off and gradually increase engine speed until you reach full power take-off speed of 540 rpm. Lower Tiller to the ground and simultaneously commence forward travel of approximately 2 mph. Do not make turns or attempt to back up while tiller is in the ground. See important note below.

Travel about 50ft. and then stop to check your results. When stopping, remember to lift the tiller out of the ground, stop the tractor, reduce engine speed, disengage the power take-off, set the park brake, shut off the tractor, and remove the keys. If you are tilling too shallow or too deep, adjust the skid shoes accordingly. If the soil texture is too coarse, lower the leveling door and reduce your ground speed. If the soil texture is too fine, you will need to raise your leveling door and increase your ground speed. For any other problem conditions that may arise, you will want to refer to the Troubleshooting section of this Operator’s Manual.

When you are done tilling for the day, make sure you use proper tractor shut down procedures before you get off of the tractor. If you are detaching your tiller, make sure you park it on a dry and level surface leaving it clean and ready for the next use. When you put your tiller up for the season, make sure you refer to the Storage Directions in this Operator’s Manual.

With a little practice and a few adjustments, you will soon be achieving the results you want with your Land Pride Rotary Tiller.

Drive ChainRefer to Figure 3-1:The tension on the drive chain can be easily adjusted by using the chain tightener stud.

Should excessive backlash occur, unscrew the lock nut, turn the bolt, Figure 3-1, clockwise as indicated by the arrow, until idler arm is firm against chain, then back the bolt off counterclockwise 1/4" turn. Re-lock the lock nut while holding the head of the bolt in place. Refer to the Torque Values Chart in the “Appendix” section on page 28.

Rear Deflector & Down Pressure KitRefer to Figure 3-3:The rear deflector can be adjusted closer to the ground to produce a fine soil texture or can be raised to produce a coarse soil texture by adjusting the spring rods. Adjust rear deflector to the desired height and install cotter pins in one of the top six holes on the spring rods above the cushion springs.

Refer to Figure 3-4:The rear deflector can be secured in the raised position for replacing spring tines. Remove hairpin cotters (#2) and raise deflector enough to reinstall hairpin cotters in 7th hole located below the cushion springs.

An optional spring kit, part no. 311-162A, is offered to allow you to apply down pressure on the rear deflector for leveling. Adjust locking collars up to compress springs to desired pressure.

MaintenanceProper servicing and adjustments are key to the long life of any implement. With careful inspection and routine maintenance, you can avoid costly downtime and repair.

Check all hardware after several hours of operation and regularly thereafter to ensure they are tight and secured. Replace worn, damaged, or illegible safety labels by obtaining new labels from your Land Pride dealer.


Do not alter implement or replace parts on the implement with other brands. Other brands may not fit properly or meet OEM specifications. They can weaken the integrity and impair the safety, function, performance, and life of the implement. Replace parts only with genuine Land Pride parts.


For safety reasons, each maintenance operation must be performed with tractor power take-off disengaged, tiller lowered completely to the ground or onto support blocks, tractor engine shut off, and ignition key removed.

Shearbolt ProtectionAvoid shear bolt breakage by making sure tiller is out of the ground before engaging power take-off. Engage power take-off slowly at low engine rpm. Increase engine speed to 540 rpm only after tines are rotating.

See table below for correct shear bolt and nut part numbers. Torque shear bolt nuts to 7-9 ft- lbs.

Driveline ProtectionTiller drive components are protected from shock loads with a friction clutch or a shear bolt. The clutch must be capable of slippage during operation to protect the gearbox, driveline and other drive train parts. Shear bolt protection is discussed on page 18.

Friction clutches should be “run-in” prior to initial operation and after long periods of inactivity to remove any oxidation that may have accumulated on the friction surfaces. Repeat “run-in” instructions at the beginning of each season and when moisture and/or condensation seizes the inner friction plates.

Refer to Figure 4-2 on page 19 and Figure 4-4 on page 20 to determine which friction clutch your Rotary Tiller has. Follow run-In, disassembly, and assembly instructions for your specific clutch.

IMPORTANT: When ordering tines, be sure to order only genuine Land Pride tines and to order both right- and left-hand tines. Always install tines with cutting edge facing the direction of rotation.

Clutches With 8 Hex Socket BoltsClutch Run-In Refer to Figure 4-2:1. Loosen counterclockwise all 8 hex head socket bolts

uniformly 6 full turns.

2. Cycle clutch on and off 5 or 6 times (15 seconds on and 15 seconds off) with the engine operating at half throttle. Disengage driveline, shut off tractor and remove key. Wait for all components to stop before dismounting from tractor.

3. Tighten hex head socket bolts fully back. Clutch is ready for use

4. The clutch should be checked during the first hour of cutting and periodically each week.

IMPORTANT: Check position of lip on stop flange. (UP or DOWN). Install stop flange with lip UP if there is only one spring (#4) and with lip DOWN if there are two springs (#4).

Clutches With 4 Adjusting NutsClutch Run-In Refer to Figure 4-4 (View - A):1. Using a pencil or other marker, scribe a line across the

exposed edges of the clutch plates and friction disks.

2. Tighten all 4 nuts uniformly until spring load is low enough that the clutch slips freely with power take-off engaged.

3. Start tractor and engage power take-off for 2-3 seconds to permit slippage of clutch surfaces. Disengage power take-off, then re-engage a second time for 2-3 seconds. Disengage power take-off, shut off tractor, and remove key. Wait for all components to stop before dismounting from tractor.

4. Inspect clutch and ensure that the scribed markings made on the clutch plates have changed position. Slippage has not occurred if any two marks on the friction disk and plate are still aligned. A clutch that has not slipped must be disassembled to separate the friction disk plates. See Clutch Disassembly & Assembly on page 20.

Refer to Figure 4-4 (View - B):5. Turn all 4 nuts fully back if no two marks on the

friction disk and plate are still aligned. Clutch is ready for use.

6. The clutch should be checked during first hour of cutting and periodically each week. An additional set of scribe marks can be added to check for slippage.

Clutch Disassembly & Assembly If clutch run-in procedure indicates that one or more of the friction disks did not slip, then the clutch must be disassembled to separate the friction disks.

Step 2Remove backup ring, lock collar, compression spring, bottom backup ring, and balls.

Step 2Compress the Belleville Springs to the pressure plate by tightening the four hex nuts and then placing the assembly into the clutch housing.

Step 3Bend the retaining lugs inward over the Belleville Spring edges to secure the spring before backing the four hex nuts off.

Step 4With the lugs bent in, loosen the four hex nuts completely to the end of the threaded studs.

Step 5Insert greased balls.

Step 6Install bottom backup ring, compression spring, lock collar, and top backup ring.

Step 7Install snap ring.

Step 1Place the hub and friction disks into the housing.

Long-Term StorageClean, inspect, service, and make necessary repairs to the Rotary Tiller when parking it for long periods and when parking it at the end of a working season. This will help ensure that the tiller is ready for field use the next time you hook-up to it.


Always disconnect driveline from the tractor and secure implement in the up position with solid supports before servicing its underside. The power take-off can be engaged if tractor is started causing equipment damage, bodily injury, or death.

1. Clean off any dirt and grease that may have accumulated on the Rotary Tiller. Scrape off compacted dirt and then wash surfaces thoroughly with a garden hose.

2. Check the tines for wear and replace if necessary. See Tine Replacement earlier in this section.

3. Inspect the tiller for loose, damaged, or worn parts and adjust or replace if needed.

4. Repaint parts where paint is worn or scratched to prevent rust. Ask your Land Pride dealer for Aerosol touch-up paint. They are also available in touch-up bottles with brush, quarts, and gallon sizes by adding TU, QT, or GL to the end of the Aerosol part number.

5. A coating of oil may be applied to worn surfaces in lieu of painting to minimize oxidation.

6. Replace all damaged or missing decals.

7. Lubricate as noted in “Lubrication” on page 22.

8. Drain and refill gearbox and chaincase oil. Be sure to replace all oil plugs.

• Drain oil in gearbox by removing the bottom drain plug or right-hand cap.

• Drain oil in chaincase by removing the bottom plug and tipping tiller backwards.

9. Store tiller on a level surface in a clean, dry place. Inside storage will reduce maintenance and make for a longer tiller life.

10. Follow all parking instructions on page 15 when disconnecting tractor from tiller.

This Warranty is limited to the repair replacement of any defective part by LandPride and the installation by the dealer of any such replacement part, and does notcover common wear items such as blades, belts, tines, etc. Land Pride reservesthe right to inspect any equipment or parts which are claimed to have beendefective in material or workmanship.

This Warranty does not apply to any part or product which in Land Pride’sjudgment shall have been misused or damaged by accident or lack of normalmaintenance or care, or which has been repaired or altered in a way whichadversely affects its performance or reliability, or which has been used for apurpose for which the product is not designed. Misuse also specifically includesfailure to properly maintain oil levels, grease points, and driveline shafts.

Claims under this Warranty should be made to the dealer which originally soldthe product and all warranty adjustments must be made through an authorizedLand Pride dealer. Land Pride reserves the right to make changes in materials ordesign of the product at any time without notice.

This Warranty shall not be interpreted to render Land Pride liable for damagesof any kind, direct, consequential, or contingent to property.
