UPPER ARLINGTON ROTARY CLUB District 6690, Columbus Ohio, USA Club 3694, Chartered 1972 JULY 19, 2016 Phil Glandon introduced Craig Truax, Manager for Corporate Enagagement at the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. In addition to his work for the Foodbank, Craig is the President-Elect of the Gahanna Rotary Club. Craig discussed the Foodbank’s mission to end hunger and its vision for a hunger-free and healthier community in which 1 in 4 children and 1 in 6 adults face food insecurity every day. In a statistics packed presentation, Mr. Truax spoke of the reach, size, and impact of the Mid- Ohio Foodbank operation. The facility located in Grove City is the largest in Ohio, serves 20 counties in central and eastern Ohio, and delivers nearly 60 million pounds of food each year. A network of 650 food pantries, soup kitchens, and after school programs helps the much needed food get distributed to those in need. Under the leadership of Matt Habash, the Foodbank has a multi-pronged approach to serving the hungry population of central Ohio. The agency has Community Initiatives that include the South Side Roots restaurant and market at the Reeb Center that offers variable cost meals and affordable grocery items. The community initiatives also include various planning and educational forums to help connect their clients with resources. Produce Initiatives include urban farms where fresh produce is grown in urban Columbus, as well as Mobile Markets and Produce Express that deliver food where it is needed most using special refrigerated vehicles. Finally, the Kroger Community Pantry located at the Grove City Foodbank facility serves as a learning lab to develop best practices in resource delivery for the growing needs in our community. Additional statistics Craig shared with our club about Foodbank clients: • Without assistance, 50% would have to choose between shelter and food, and 69% would have to choose between food and utilities • Only 5% are homeless and 49% have worked in the past 12 months • 40% used the pantry 1 time in the past 12 months and 78% used it 5 or less times What can we do to support the Foodbank? Their website lists many opportunities for involvement at www.midohiofoodbank.org. Monetary donations are very impactful for the Foodbank, and can easily be made on the website. Craig can gladly work with volunteer groups to organize a service event, a group could host a meeting at the Foodbank facility to raise awareness, or invite a speaker to your club’s event. The Mid-Ohio Foodbank is working hard to meet the needs of the food insecure in our community and there are many opportunities to help.
