GREAT FIREFIGHTER CHALLENGE
Last Friday prefects and members of the student forum organized a staff vs seniors stair relay. This was to fundraise and raise awareness for the Lake Okareka Rural Fire Fighters who will be participating in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge in May. The stair
challenge is to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. The staff and seniors completed 1103 stairs between them, which is the total number of stairs in the Sky Tower Challenge. Each participant had to wear an item of firefighting equipment – helmets, coats, pants, boots. The student forum will be making a donation to sponsor the Lake Okareka Rural Fire Force team and you can do this too at this link: https://secure.leukaemia.net.nz/registrant/TeamFundraisingPage.aspx?teamID=96556&langPref=en-CA&Referrer=%26Referrer%3dhttps%253a%252f%252ffirefightersclimb.org.nz%252ffundraising%252fbanking-information%252f#&panel1-2
Great effort all staff and students. Good luck to the firefighters for the challenge next month!

Our Drama results from The Sheila Winn Shakespeare Festival Regional Finals held at Rotorua Lakes High School on Saturday the 8th. Our students, Liam Dixon, Leroy Nurkka and Emma Jenkin competed with 65 students from Five (5) different schools in the Regional Finals last Saturday. They were a very strong ensemble and their results show the dedication and hard work they have put in over the last six (6) weeks during lunchtimes and after school. RLHS received two participation certificates, won for best costume, and Liam Dixon won Most Promising Actor and Direct Entry to the National Shakespeare Schools Production - to be held in Wellington in early October. Liam will join 47 other students chosen from regional finals from around the country to participate in workshops and also a production of a Shakespeare piece to the public. During this week he will be assessed and has the opportunity to be selected to be a member of the Young Shakespeare Company to travel to the UK in 2018.

It’s finally come to fruition. After five years of studying Spanish Eve Battersby, Deanna Dodman, Isobel Tibble-Gotz, and Kate Wilson are off to Spain to try out their understanding of Spanish, brush up on their speaking skills and soak up the culture. They will be accompanied by Erica Weblin, Lana Moree, Ila Ford-Robertson, Marnie Bloor and Jessica Jordan. Heather Richardson and Brenda Rangitutia are leading the group. Everyone has been working and saving very hard over the past year to make this trip possible. All support they have received from family, friends and the school community has been greatly appreciated. Gracias. The group will include visits to the wonderful historic and cultural
cities of Madrid, Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, Granada, Valencia and Barcelona. During their week in Seville the students will be homestayed and will attend a Spanish language school for five hours each morning. The trip has only been made possible by working alongside John Paul College and Travel To Learn.

ROAD SAFETY YOUTH EXPO 2017
On Tuesday, all of the Year 11 students were taken to the Road Safety Expo held at the Energy Events Centre. A keynote speaker shared their experience of the impacts that tragedy related to driving on New Zealand roads. The students were also given the opportunity to experience and engage with rescue professionals in a fun interactive way. All the students enjoyed the day and we would like to thank Reade Nikora from Rotorua Road Safety for organising an informative session.

FROM THE HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTRE
Having head lice, also called nits, doesn't mean you're dirty. Children are most commonly affected, but anyone with hair can catch them. Head Lice are tiny insects that live in human hair. They're very small (about the size of a sesame seed) and are browny-grey in colour. They have six legs, each with a claw on the end. They use these to cling on to hair, and they survive by biting the scalp and feeding on blood. This often causes itching, but not always. The female head lice lay eggs in sacs that stick to individual hairs. A baby head louse then hatches 7 to 10 days later. If your child has head lice, you might be able to spot the remains of the tiny white egg in their hair. This is called a "nit". Some people also use the word "nit" to mean "head lice". The baby head louse is ready to have babies of its own 10 to 14 days later. Head lice crawl from head to head when you're close to someone who has them.
Children are particularly at risk because they're often in close contact with other children at school. Head lice can't fly or jump, and it's very rare to get head lice from a pillow or a towel as they can't survive away from a human head for very long.

How to spot head lice: Head lice can be difficult to detect, even when you closely inspect your child's head. If you think your child may have head lice:
Check your child's hair. The most common places for head lice to lurk are in the hair behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.
If you still can't spot any lice, comb the child's hair with a special nit comb. These are available from most chemists. It's easier to spot head lice as they fall out if you comb the hair over a piece of white paper.
Treating head lice:
If head lice are present, you need to treat your child. You should only treat your child if you find live head lice, which confirms a live infestation. Don't treat "just
in case". Head lice are tough. They can't be killed by washing with normal shampoo or normal combing. Because they
reproduce so quickly, you've got to kill them before they spread to others. If your child has head lice, check everyone in the family. You'll need to treat everyone affected to get rid of
them. You can treat head lice by wet-combing hair with a special comb, or by using medicated lotions or
sprays available over the counter at pharmacies.
Or: see Mrs. Pauline Murray (nurse) at the Health & Wellness
Centre for treatment and to obtain a comb.
