Overseas Professional Experience, Cultural and Educational Program in
China (16055) The key aim is to enhance the design of School of Education (SOE) courses to provide an opportunity for each cohort to experience opportunities that align to the national curriculum priority area of ‘Australia’s Engagement with Asia’. Pre-service teacher education requires teachers to be able to articulate the importance of “Australia’s engagement with Asia as a priority that provides opportunity for students to celebrate the social, cultural, political and economic links that connect Australia with Asia”. This learning/teaching enhancement to teacher education courses will help to build students’ capacity in global literacy through person-to-person intellectual engagement with people in Asia. This opportunity to study abroad will be a powerful and life-changing experience for students that need to be prepared to be more interculturally competent for the classrooms they will enter in Western Sydney upon graduating.

Life in Nepal one year after the earthquake‐ Journalism Internship
(16061) Being a foreign correspondent is an ultimate goal of many journalism students. However, for many UWS journalism students, this is a far- fetched ‘dream ‘as they compete with their counterparts from sandstone universities who complete work overseas as part of their course work in preparation for plum jobs in the media industries. In attempting to give our students an equal opportunity, and dispel the myth about not being good enough, we propose to send five students to Kathmandu to experience life after the earthquake and report on it via the online edition of the Nepali Times and use social and digital media to feed live reports and make a difference in the global sphere about the situation in Nepal. Nepali Times editor Kunda Dixit and Dr Chand will team up to provide mentorship and guidance to the group. The power of story- telling will come alive manyfold for everyone involved.

UWS Nursing clinical placement in China (16064) Bachelor of Nursing students in their 2nd and 3rd year will undertake a Short-Term grant in a primary Indo-Pacific region – China. This mobility project will be an embedded component of an elective unit: 400958 A Field Study: Comparative Studies of Health Care Delivery. The plan is to organise for approximately 10-15 students accompanied by two academic staff to travel to Wuhan, China to engage in cross cultural experience of health care delivery. Students will reside at the Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) campus for 10 days. HUST nursing academics will facilitate access to the local hospital and community centres to enable students to experience an alternative health care system. This cultural immersion experience allows students to learn about pertinent local health issues and reflect on the difference between health care services.
This project has the scope to be scaled down which will be dependent on student numbers.

Occupational Therapy placements with Bali Sports Foundation (16079) Bali Sports Foundation is an NGO that provides opportunities for youth with disabilities to participate in a range of sporting activities. It is expected that an ongoing relationship can benefit the university aligning with Goal 4 of the strategic plan – an expanding international reach and reputation. Students will have a broadened range of opportunities for their compulsory practice placements. They will be able to engage in community based rehabilitation for youths in villages in Bali. While the project aim is for a continuing relationship in the region it is possible for the project to be scaled down either in reducing the number of students or the number of years it will operate. This would not be ideal as it would reduce the anticipated outcomes.

Leaning Essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine In The Land of Its
Origin – supporting Australia (16089) University of Western Sydney (UWS) has been offering an undergraduate Bachelor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) initial qualification for registration in TCM since 1999. It aims to prepare and educate practitioners with the knowledge, attitudes and professional competencies required for safe and effective practice in Chinese medicine in the modalities of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The clinical practice component in the program is capstone experience for UWS students to become a competent, skilled and registrable practitioner of TCM. A final stage of clinical training requires completion of an additional 400 hours clinical practice in a fostering teaching hospital in China through Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NUCM), it runs each year from October to December. This will involve students paying their own travel fares, as well as training and accommodation fees to the Chinese institution. The funding is sought for supporting students to undertake this clinical training in China.

Understanding Diversity: Identity, Advocacy and Well‐being (16099) This project will provide an excellent opportunity for UG students from the School of Social Sciences and Psychology (SSAP) to have an international mobility experience and networking. Depending on available funds, 10-15 SSAP students will engage with gender variant and sexuality diverse adults including those who identify themselves as transgender at Saksham Trust, Chandigarh, India to understand their concerns. SSAP students will also engage with students at Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh where they will attend workshops on local language and diversity related issues. Through joint advocacy, they will promote awareness of the challenges faced by gender variant and sexuality diverse individuals and assist in reducing associated stigma, both in India and Australia. It is anticipated that upon their return to Australia, SSAP students will share their experience at SSAP Engagement Day and as NCP ambassadors, provide valuable insight to extend the potential for future outbound mobility experiences.

UWS Immersion Experience leading to Transformative Learning
(16101) This Immersion Experience will allow students from various disciplines to complete an internship with an Indian NGO, while also attending classes at St Xavier's College to contextualise their experience. Students will be matched to the internship most suited to their field of study (Education students working in schools, agriculture students working on food security projects, Nursing students on nutritional projects etc). Some of the advantages of this program include: students across disciplines living and working together, students from all disciplines having the opportunity for an international experience (something lacking in some instances) and gaining a unique cultural experience immersed in the local community. This Mobility Project connects with the Immersion Experience program for Humanities students and an existing transdisciplinary research program for agriculture students run in partnership with Indian NGO (PRADAN) and UWS.

A UWS Multidisciplinary Program in South Korea (16106) This new program will deliver an annual intensive residential study tour to 10 business and tourism management students (five from each discipline), at the “Sejahtera Centre”, Tongyeong, South Korea – established May 2015, with the support of the local Ministry of Environment, to facilitate sustainability knowledge exchange for the Asia-Pacific. While immersed in the local culture, progressive cohorts of students will develop critical understandings of environmental and enterprise sustainability, with the support of the Sejahtera Centre and the UN Regional Centre of Expertise network.

The business analysis topic is negotiated between the organisation, UWS and the student and credited towards the UWS unit 200162 Business Report. Students attend preparatory seminars in Australia which include cross cultural training , and ongoing online seminars while overseas. The main assessment is completed before, during and after the overseas study period by the development of a business report to be provided to the industry partner worth 60% of the assessment, and learning reflection worth 20%.
The study of an international organisation is arranged in conjunction with St Xaviers CollegeMumbai, utilising their extensive alumni networks, or via our own contacts (UWS staff oralumni). This study program has previously been supported and run successfully by the School of Business for a period of 10 years on a non-credit basis.

Foundations of Chinese Law – Mobility Project in China (16551) The Foundations of Chinese Law is introduced as an alternate unit for LLB students to be taught intensively in two weeks at Shanghai University. The project introduces students to the basic structure of the Chinese legal system, its laws and the legal culture. Through seminars and field trips to Dacheng Law Office in Shanghai and various Chinese courts, the project aims to develop students’ understanding on how the Chinese legal system has developed in its political and cultural contexts.
The prior departure program of the project includes seminars on Chinese culture and language, and activities to engage the prior departure law students with Chinese students studying at UWS, as well as Chinese lawyers and business people in Sydney.
The project can be scaled up to 30 students and $3000 respectively, and scale down to $1000 per students if that is required.

Discovering Markets of China (16675) This project consists of a 3-week field trip to Shanghai, the preparation work leading to the trip, and the reporting afterwards. It is an integral part of 200098, Markets of Asia, a Year 3 undergraduate unit. Students participating in this project will submit a report reasoning a new business opportunity for an Australian small business, based on both the primary knowledge gained from the trip, and secondary knowledge gleaned before and after the trip. The report will be based on their visits of large and small businesses, consumers, job agencies, and government departments, as well as their learnings in this and other Business units, especially international business and marketing. This project will lift student structured knowledge about the markets of China, especially business opportunities for small businesses in China and what it is like to work in China, Australia’s largest trading partner.

Vietnam Outbound Mobility Experience (16584) This project sees students immerse themselves in industry while gaining a greater appreciation of the importance of the Indo-Pacific region to Australia through a sixteen-day (for credit) program. Research projects involving in class and field activities allow UWS students and Vietnamese students to participate in cultural exchange, often leading to the start of international networks. Mobility partners offer in-depth incite into international business and culture through seminars, behind the scenes meetings and tours with social enterprises, businesses and universities. The reciprocal relationship between countries is reinforced with students introducing the game of AFL football to Vietnamese students and donating sporting equipment to the host organisations. Offering a program refined over the past five years, the Vietnam mobility program activities have lead to expanded relationships within UWS including international placements and alumni work opportunities, hence the program activities cannot be scaled down, although the number of participating students may be reviewed.
