Created By: Nate Green
Name of species: Neogobius malanostomus
Common name: Round gobyKingdom: AnimaliaPhylum: ChordataClass: Actinopterygii (ray-finned fish)
CLASSIFICATION
The round goby was introduced to the great lakes from Europe and Asia in 1990
It was introduced by accident due to the transfer of ballast water from international ships
Today it can be found in the great lakes and many northern lakes.
From There to Here
Distribution Map
The round goby affects people through the effect they have on fish
The goby eats some of the native species and cause problems for fishermen
They also eat fish that people eat such as sculpin and perch
Effects on Humans
The round goby is very aggressive and highly territorial as well as very competitive for food, shelter, and spawning areas.
Due to this, the fish prey on our native population of mottled sculpin and logperch which greatly reduce the number of those sculpin and perch
Not only do they eat those fish but they eat the eggs of all the fish in the lakes
Effects on ecosystem
The round goby is so successful because it is very aggressive
It is able to eat fish of its same size and can eat the eggs of fish that normally eat the goby
It is also so successful since it had almost the same climate in Eurasia so it did not have to adapt
Very Successful!
Some attempts have been put into place to track the spread of this species but not much has been done to stop it
If the round goby stays it could mean a rough future for many fish in the great lakes
What about the future?
