pain from an injury or disease usually subsides or disappears spontaneously or following medical care. But for 40 million americans, there is no relief from the pain, according to the national institutes of health.
long-term chronic pain sufferers need an intensive, comprehensive approach to
treatment. cleveland clinic’s section of pain medicine is one of the longest-running,
most innovative programs addressing the complexity of chronic pain. our team of
experts customizes a menu of behavioral and medical services to meet individuals’
needs so they can regain control over their lives and break free of the pain cycle.
our specialists include physicians, psychologists, addiction counselors, advanced
practice nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and a full staff of dedicated
nurses who deliver personalized care.
following a comprehensive evaluation, our team of veteran pain specialists creates
a rehabilitation plan that may include physical rehabilitation, pain and stress
management training, and/or medication management. The section of pain medicine’s
monthly aftercare program reinforces principles learned during initial treatment and
is provided free of charge. participants can brush up on physical therapy techniques
and join in therapeutic discussions.

What We Treat
Common retinal diseases treated by our retina staff at Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute include:
Age-related Macular Degeneration – Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the No. 1 cause of legal blindness in adults. One of several types of macular degeneration, AMD occurs when the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula, breaks down and obstructs the eye’s ability to distinguish fine details. Because the disease develops as a person ages, it is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration.
Most patients have what is called the “dry” form, in which yellow deposits, called drusen, are present in the macula – in some patients eventually leading to a dimming or distortion of vision. In advanced stages, tissue death may lead to blind spots and loss of central vision. About 10 percent of people with AMD develop the “wet” form of the disease in which abnormal blood vessels grow from under the choroid, a thin vascular layer that supplies nutrients to part of the retina. The vessels leak blood and fluid into the eye, causing vision distortion that makes straight lines look wavy, and creating blind spots and loss of central vision.
There is no cure for AMD, but early detection and treatment can delay or reduce its severity. Cole Eye Institute’s retina staff works with patients and their families to determine the best treatment option. Several options are available, including:
Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs – The results of recent clinical trials of local injections of ranibizumab (Lucentis®) for active wet AMD showed visual stability in 95 percent of patients and visual gain in 43 percent of patients.
Vitamins – A combination of vitamins C, E, beta carotene, zinc and copper have been shown to decrease the risk of vision loss in patients with intermediate to advanced dry AMD.
Laser therapy — High-energy lights are used to destroy actively growing abnormal blood vessels.
Photodynamic laser therapy – This treatment involves the injection of a light-sensitive drug into the bloodstream. After being absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels, the drug is activated with a cold laser, which destroys the unwanted blood vessels.
Low vision aids – People with partial vision can enjoy improved quality of life by using devices with special lenses or electronic systems that magnify nearby objects.
Cole Eye Institute also offers the latest clinical trials for AMD – both for newly diagnosed patients and those who have been told there is no hope.

help your patients score against colon cancer: encourage colonoscopies
march is colorectal cancer awareness month
as part of our commitment to the prevention and cure of
colorectal cancer, the cleveland clinic digestive disease
institute is encouraging all primary care physicians to talk
to their patients in march about the importance of getting
a colonoscopy.
colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among
men and women in the United states. But the good news is,
according to the national cancer institute, deaths from colorec-
tal cancer are declining due to improved screening. cleveland
clinic colorectal surgeon James church, md, says increased
screening would help continue this positive trend.
“colorectal cancer is preventable,” dr. church says. “every
colorectal cancer starts off as a polyp, so if we find polyps
early and take them out we prevent cancer from happening.”
Up to 85 percent of colorectal cancers could be prevented if
everyone who was eligible for screening actually got screened,
he adds.
in march, cleveland clinic is partnering with the cleveland
cavaliers to further the screening message through prevention
education, with the “score against colon cancer” campaign.
a key focus of the campaign is to educate patients on the
common risk factors associated with colon cancer, including
family history, age, race, obesity, smoking, not exercising and
a diet high in red meat.
we hope this partnership will get the message out to at-risk
individuals and urge them to take action. you can help spread
the word by encouraging your patients to visit clevelandclinic.

The discussion of the rules that will determine the “mean-
ingful use” of electronic medical record (EMR) systems has
been ongoing for months. On Dec. 30, 2009, the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) posted a pro-
posed rule defining “meaningful use.” That same day, the
Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information
Technology (ONC) also posted its interim final rule outlining
the initial set of standards, implementation specifications
and certification criteria for EMR systems. The 60-day
public comment period that followed has generated a lively
discussion that will surely continue until the final rules are
released sometime later this year.
Throughout this complex process, the underlying goals for
the “meaningful use” of EMR systems have included:
• Improving healthcare quality, safety and efficiency while
reducing health disparities
• Engaging patients and their families in the care process
• Improving care coordination across the healthcare
continuum
• Ensuring adequate privacy and security protections for
personal health information
• Improving population and public health

As our national “meaningful use” discussion approaches
its conclusion, it may be helpful to recall that an effective
electronic medical record system is one that enhances a
physician’s ability to deliver high-quality care to patients
while improving a practice’s operational efficiency.
As you consider your EMR options, please remember that
Mypractice Community’s team of health information technol-
ogy specialists has the practical, hands-on experience that
comes from delivering quality technology services to hun-
dreds of physicians in private practice across northeast Ohio.
