Stonewall, New Mexico State University’s queerstraight alliance club, chalked campus side!"#$%& "''()*+,"-.#/& 0&1.& /."(%&ago in an effort to recruit club members, only to have antigay messages chalked over their own. Ellen Bosman, Stonewall advisor, said after this incident, Stonewall decided that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied students needed a space to feel safe and the club began the now universityfunded Sexual Gender Diversity Resource Center. “It’s visibility; it’s saying to people on campus that there is a group where you can get a sense
of community,” Bosman said. Stonewall and the center work closely together. Although the SGDRC is now headed by a graduate student and funded by the university, Stonewall member volunteers once staffed the center. Bosman said now that -2.&3.4-.(&0&##%&-2.&4..5&6)(&"&%"6.&space for LGBTA students and 7-)4.!"##& 2"%& 3)4-+48.5& -)& 0&45&its new role on campus as well. “[Stonewall] become more of an activist group,” said Stonewall President Trevor Nazario. Black Programs of New Mexico State University held a Block Party, an event to gather NMSU students and to recognize Black History Month in an exciting way on Sunday afternoon. Sorority Zeta Phi Beta gave a 1920s inspired performance with a modern twist. Fraternity Phi Beta Sigma also
made an appearance, presenting some dance moves of their own. “We also have Capoeira Quinto Sol of Las Cruces and African dancers to perform here as well,” said Diana Nzau, a coordinator for Black Programs Block Party. “We even have Joe Bob’s BBQ to cater for us.” Nzau said the Block Party has been a plan in progress for about three months, and is an event she hopes will continue for years to come. Black Programs personnel wanted to create a way to show everyone the culture and diversity at NMSU, Nzau said. Kayln Berry, NMSU freshman, said the Block Party is a great way to get together and celebrate Black History Month with friends. “I have actually learned some things I didn’t know before,” Berry said. “I’m also pretty impressed with how many students came, because I have been to other events where not a lot of people have showed.” Black Programs Block Party was an opportunity for the school to show diversity, said Ashley Chanman, an NMSU sophomore. “Holding this event is very important for the NMSU community,” Chanman said. “It is a chance to show different cultures and to have a good time as well.” Chanman said she helped in creating the Block Party and has enjoyed the process. “It has been a lot of fun watching it all come together,” Chanman said. “Overall, it has been pretty successful.”

obscenities upon paying for our gas. After continuously repeating this process, I started wondering why gas costs what it does. After a recent trip to Tucson, Ariz., I discovered not only do Tucson residents have warmer weather and an In N’ Out Burger, but their gas is generally cheaper than in Las Cruces. So, I decided to do a little (*.#'!(%&!(.#$/)01$!)$,%20#$)2!$the discrepancy. First off, the lowest gas price is in Tucson, and at $2.23 it’s a deal compared to Las Cruces. From there on out, there is a myriad of gas stations with gas priced less than $2.40, while there is only one gas station in Las Cruces with gas below that amount, at $2.37, according to an online source. To be precise,
there are at least 15 gas stations in Tucson that have regular unleaded gas below the $2.40 mark. How is it that we are getting the shaft while our friends in Tucson are paying anywhere from 14 to 46 cents less per gallon depending on where they go? Rest assured it’s no simple process as to how gas is priced, and there is a delicate balance explaining the cost. College students may have a hard time dealing with gas prices, because some don’t have much money and must scrounge change before going to the pumps. “The demand for gas in Las Cruces is probably not as high, it would also depend on the cost to get it there,” said Jim Hamilton, a New Mexico State University engineering student. How right he was in stating that transportation cost is a factor.

Brewer, 26, has been involved with his family’s business for four years and gave some valuable insight in regards to this gas price question.

What factors determine

RB: “The factors that set it are the cost of oil and taxes on the oil: It’s 34 cents a gallon, which includes the state and federal taxes. With oil, there’s a 10day correlation. If gas [prices] went down today it would take about two weeks for it to show [at the pumps].”

Las Cruces’ gas comes up from El Paso, so there is automatically a freight tax.” According to the Department of Energy’s Diesel Fuel and Gasoline Web site, four major factors determine the price of unleaded gasoline per gallon. The gas industry is no exception. It takes lots of time and effort to get gas to people and those in the industry have got to make money in order to keep supplying the services to the public. It seems logical that if Americans have to live with essentials, such as gasoline, every day, it’s a far better idea to understand why we do it and how it works.
