Rourke Educational Media’s Teaching with eBooks

Sample Lesson

Common Core State Standard: Writing Standard 2.d and 2.e – Writing informational text providing a conclusion

statement Grades: 3  4  5 Materials needed: ‐List of Ending Techniques (attached)

‐eBooks models showing different ending techniques (listed below)

‐eBooks, books, or magazines with informational text

‐Sticky notes Lesson: Intro T: In writing informational pieces in addition to hooking the reader at the beginning of our writing we also need

to end our writing in a way that brings everything together for our reader. Let’s look at this list of common

ending techniques that writers use.

Engage the students in a discussion of the different types of ending techniques listed. See if they can give

examples of or explain any of the techniques on the list.

Instruction/Models T: Now, let’s look at some specific examples of ending techniques that writers have used in their books.

Show the cover of each model before turning to the ending . Read the ending and then guide the students in a

discussion to decide what type of ending technique the author used.

 eBook Models for Ending Techniques:

Ask a question – Good or Services (p20)

Use an exclamation ‐ Inventors and Discoveries (p45), What Does Green Mean? (p20)

Tell feelings about the topic

Use a universal word (all, every, the world, all of us) – Cleaning Up the Earth (p20)

Circle back to the beginning technique – Reptiles (p22)

Make a comparison – Need It or Want It (p20‐21)

Give last step or directions in a process

Make a prediction – Enterprise STEM (p45)

Remind reader of the main points – Where Does the Water Go? (p20)

Present the clincher in a persuasive argument – Water World (p22)

Offer the reader advice – Floods, Dams, and Levees (p45)

Invite the reader to learn more – Endangered! (p20), Understanding Biomes (p44)

Additional Discussion Prompts: ‐Why they think the author chose the particular ending technique. Do they think it works?

‐Can you think of a different ending technique that would work for this book?

T: Now that we’re looked at different ending techniques and seen examples of how the experts use them, let’s

work in groups to see find additional examples in books and articles that we have in the classroom. Read the

endings in the books and magazines that you have and then write on the stick note what type of ending

technique it is. Who knows, you might find a new technique that’s not on our list!

After students have had a chance to read a couple of different endings, have them share what they found and

add it to your class model list.

Try It Out ‐Have students write new endings to a piece that they had completed earlier.
