Riverfront Recapture Community Rowing Program | 2017

Although the season ended rather unceremoniously with an early flood and emergency evacuation, it was another great year of continued growth and good people, highlighted by our Men’s Team winning a National Championship. They outpaced perennial powerhouses like the Texas Rowing Center, the Potomac Boat Club and Saugatuck, winning 16 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze medals to take home the points trophy at USRowing’s Masters Nationals Championship. The Head of the Riverfront was yet again a fantastic success, the 5K Run for the Riverfront blazed new trails through the Boathouse, five of our high school seniors went off to row in college (and one went to Thailand!), our women’s team grew and purchased the Catalyst, Hector’s 8 am Harem rowed until the flood, the Adaptive program kept chugging along, we saw the hard-fought return of our Veterans program, scullers kept sculling, beginners kept arriving, and our Rec Team floated an amazing eight 8+’s last Fall. 2017’s edition of our Silver Oar award was our first-ever Hall of Fame edition, presented to the four individuals whose longstanding service significantly shaped our program into what it is today, and where it’s capable of going in the future: Paige McCullough Casciano, Chris Hayes, Gretchen Gregg, and Mike Puckly.

Beautiful weather and the hard work of our volunteers made for another successful Head of the Riverfront. We had almost 600 entries, representing 62 clubs and schools, racing in high school, collegiate and masters divisions. The 20th Annual Head of the Regatta will be held on Sunday, September 30.

Our second annual Run for the Riverfront 5K was even more successful than the inaugural race. Over $10,000 was raised by individuals. Beth Weber and Julia Vide raised the most dollars among the adult and youth rowers. We netted close to $16,000! Mark your calendars for the third annual Run for the Riverfront on Friday, September 14.
