in 2004, Rowland Design converted the former headquarters of the Fletcher Trust Bank into an urban hotel. performing interior

architecture and interior design, Rowland Design gracefully retained the grandeur of the structure’s public spaces in keeping with

the hotel’s historic nature.

in the winter of 2009, First Hospitality Group once again contacted Rowland Design to create a modernized design scheme for the

downtown indianapolis Hilton Garden inn. Keeping in mind the historic nature of the hotel and its iconic presence in downtown

indianapolis, Rowland Design updated the hotel’s lobby, bar and Great American Grill restaurant with both classic and modern

furniture and accessories. This interior redesign brought a new level of sophistication to the hotel’s unique historic setting.

long admired as one of the finest family owned jewelry merchants in indianapolis, Reis-nichols retained Rowland Design to give

their flagship store a modern update that would respect the traditions of their business and at the same time attract and retain

new clients. Rowland’s design program created an elegant presentation of Reis-nichols’s premium product, and the store’s design

is characterized by the blending of contemporary styling with traditional materials. inside the store is an area where guests can

view the jewelry design process, offices for staff, and a variety of dramatic display areas. Reis-nichols prides itself on the open

dialogue its employees have with their customers, and Rowland’s design solution was inspired by this relationship.

This 10 million dollar renovation project led by mGA partners and Rowland Design had three main parts. The Cinema, The Black

Box Theatre and the movement studio in the old theatre fly loft, and the theatre and drama classrooms and offices. The cinema’s

design challenge was to fit a state of the art THX surround sound cinema into the existing space (This required a larger projection

booth to fit all of the modern equipment). The original fly loft floor was removed and reengineered to allow for heavy equipment to

move sets to and from the existing loading dock. A new structure was added inside the existing space to allow for The Black Box

Theatre and movement studio. Two sets of stairs and an elevator were added for proper access to these spaces. in order to do

this, the design team had to add an overbuild section to the upper floors. The roof of the building had to be completely removed

and replaced with a heavy duty epDm. This project is to achieve leeD silver certification.

What used to be the site of a bankrupted department store is now a bustling, mixed-use area with locally owned restaurants,

retail shops, banks and medical offices. At the turn of the last century, this area of east Grand Rapids was home to a vibrant

amusement park and numerous commercial establishments. Rowland Design, together with the Jade pig ventures development

company, have brought pride and excitement back to the Gaslight district. The mass of the two block parcel is broken into

numerous storefront façades offering varying identities for potential tenants. Additionally, a vibrant civic plaza at the heart of the

complex is the site of art fairs, concerts and community socials. The focal point of the plaza is a whimsical fountain inspired by the

billowing regatta sails seen on the nearby lake.

in the design of the Ameriana Bank Westfield branch, the client’s main goal was to strengthen its ties to the community with

an inviting, open design. Warm wood tones and diffused lighting give the bank’s lobby and seating areas a “coffeehouse” vibe,

allowing customers to feel at home when they stop in to do their banking. internet kiosks with free wi-fi and a conference room

open to the community for public use give Ameriana a competitive edge over other financial institutions. in addition, graphics

throughout Ameriana’s Westfield branch feature photographs that highlight neighborhood activities, visually displaying Ameriana’s

strong commitment to its community.

charley creek innWABAsH, in

The Charley Creek inn, originally built in 1920, recently completed a 2-year historically accurate restoration. Rowland Design

served as the interior designer on the project team. The Charley Creek inn boutique hotel has thirty individually designed guest

rooms and suites, and also contains several well-appointed event spaces, including a rooftop event space known as The Cloud

Club. The hotel is located in the heart of historic downtown Wabash, indiana. Guests will feel right at home with many amenities

including on-site dining at “Twenty,” the hotel’s casual upscale restaurant, also designed by Rowland Design. Richard Ford,

owner of Charley Creek inn, received the distinguished ‘Cook Cup Award’ from indiana landmarks for his transformation of the

historic hotel.

nestled in an urban high rise, this previous suburban dweller sought to dramatically reinvent her lifestyle through the design

of an open loft focused on entertaining and meditative calm. The spare, contemplative retreat centers all cognitive and physical

attention on the soothing presence of the Ohio River: furnishings are clean-lined, finishes are quiet and rotating, and a regional art

collection is strategically placed so as not to distract from the river’s peaceful existence.

jw marriottinDiAnApOlis, in

Rowland Design created a full package of wayfinding and signage for the newly completed JW marriott in downtown indianapolis.

This expansive building required unique solutions for exterior vehicular and parking garage signage, exterior identification, and

interior signage. The exterior signage needed to clarify and visually support the multiple hotel flags, on one site, but not distract

from the impressive architecture. The colors of the exterior signage took their cue from the JW marriott tower of blue and silver.

Rowland Design’s simple but elegant interior signage enhances the spectacular design of the property and improves guest

movement through the JW marriott tower, Courtyard, and springHill suites to the first level event Center.

Honesty is the foundation for the design of this prototype fast food restaurant. The public display of the food preparation process;

the cutting of the fresh potatoes in the making of the French fries as seen by drive-through visitors; the bare, concrete floors and

the exposed structure reinforce the integrity of the owner’s brand identity. The simple, bold planes of color that inform the design

of the building’s exterior enable 96th street to stand out among the visually cluttered strip of outlot retail structures. Once inside,

space is divided into two, discreet zones for quick, in/out eating and “sit down” dining. industrial track lighting, plywood and

brushed aluminum furnishings underpin the openness of the restaurant’s concept.

honors collegeiupui | inDiAnApOlis, in

Because of our strong relationship with iu and iupui, Rowland Design was hired to design the iupui Honors College. The

Honors College wanted to create a space that captured the interest of students, parents and faculty. Because the Honors

College is located in a basement space, special consideration was taken in the planning stages that addressed the low ceiling

height, as well as the surrounding mechanical rooms that serve the entire building.

harrison collegeinDiAnApOlis, in

Founded in 1902, Harrison College, formerly known as indiana Business College, had previously occupied a century-old church

building. Through the catalyzing leadership of a new president, the institution reinvented its image through the construction of

this new facility. Designed to accommodate the needs of classrooms, admissions and faculty offices, dining and student center

amenities, the structure has established a new architectural standard for Harrison’s regional campuses. its vibrant nighttime

presence, iconic stair tower and orientation to downtown indianapolis have resulted in a powerful civic presence for the college,

and enrollment has dramatically increased since the completion of this project.

Harrison College once again retained Rowland for the expansion of their downtown indianapolis campus; this time for the design

of a culinary institute. The Chef’s Academy continues the architectural and material precedent of the campus while at the same

time providing its own identity through scale and a whimsically designed entry lobby inspired by the culinary arts. The interior of

the teaching school is dramatically transparent so that students, both enrolled and prospective, may observe the cooking process

in the prep, production and baking kitchens.

Renovating the sigma Kappa house involved the complete re-envisioning of a three-story 7,000 square foot sorority house adjacent

to the university of louisville campus. Rowland Design teamed with a local architectural firm to give the women of sigma Kappa

an open floor plan, and then filled each room with comfortable seating arranged in intimate groups. inspired by the sorority’s

colors of maroon and lavender, the inviting rooms of the sigma Kappa house helped the sorority recruit one of the largest new

member classes in the history of the chapter.

Designed for the lifestyle of a well-traveled and eclectically minded family, this five-bedroom Georgian home is organized around

a central hall leading to an octagonal breakfast room. its abundant windows and color palette of golden straw, camel, warm gray

and cream combined with porcelain and maple floors fill the home with light. lush panels of silk and linen frame the window in

a manner that accentuates the height of the spaces and softens the abundant stained and painted woodwork details throughout

the house. A collection of modern, regency, rustic and italian furnishings along with contemporary and traditional artwork was

assembled to reflect the homeowners’ wide ranging interests.

After several successful projects with Cunningham Restaurant Group, Rowland Design yet again worked with the restaurant

developer to design mesh on mass. mike Cunningham, owner of Cunningham Restaurant Group, wanted mesh to be a blend of

contemporary elegance and comfort. Rowland Design selected furniture, finishes, lighting and accessories that mix rough with

refined, ensuring that mesh’s unique atmosphere stands apart from other dining experiences in the area.

The women of Kappa Kappa Gamma at purdue university asked Rowland to design a house that felt inviting and also showcased

the unique character of their chapter. Rowland Design utilized the exposed beams in the ceilings of the main living spaces to

draw the eye from floor to ceiling. The sorority’s badge, coat of arms and flower inspire the artwork around the room. using the

sorority’s colors of light and dark blue as accents, Rowland Design painted the walls of the more formal sitting room a luscious

gold. in an adjoining common space, cornflower blue became the wall color and warmly hued fabrics covered the plush furniture.

What began as school no. 9, circa 1899, is now the headquarters of a leading creative agency. young & laramore and its sister

companies now draw inspiration from an environment rich with history and whimsy that inspires collaboration, creativity and

open communication. public hallways are replete with the firm’s work. stair landings are used as impromptu meeting zones.

Chalkboards have been repurposed as countertops and work surfaces, and a rocket ship acts as conference space. The new space

reflects the organization’s vibrant and exciting culture and lets the company put their inspired imprint on it.

indiana repertory theatreinDiAnApOlis, in

Rowland was charged with bringing back the grandeur of the theatre that was lost during an earlier renovation that was completely

modern. The focus was on renovating the actual performing venues, the grand lobby and passageways, which are now replete

with historical pieces from the Theatre’s past. Rowland saw in the spanish Baroque design that the lobby could be transformed

into one of the most elegant rooms in indiana. much of the original beauty in the ceiling had been buried beneath decades of

soot. marble patterns were discovered on landings, a crest shield on a wall appeared, unappreciated art emerged. The original

detailing for plaster walls, seating upholstery, and end panels on the rows of seats were reintroduced to echo the motifs that

reflected the moorish movie palace circa 1927.

in contrasts: antique vs. modern, ornamental vs. industrial, sumptuous vs. ascetic and soft vs. hard. european antiques, custom

furnishings, lush velvets and silks richly complement the strict white walls and gray rubber floors. Additionally, indigo draperies

framing the passage from the entry to the main living space serve as a tactile, softening counterpoint to the hard surfaced envelope.

eli lilly & company inDiAnApOlis, in

iiDA’s 2007 “iDeA” Award Winner for Corporate / Commercial spaces, eli lilly’s new headquarters lobby and Heritage Hall exhibit

was a collaborative effort, facilitated by Rowland Design. lilly asked the design team to create a stimulating space that tells of eli

lilly’s 130 year commitment to pharmaceuticals and life sciences, and that communicates a responsible allocation of resources to

its employees and visitors. Working within the existing architecture, the design team created a sequence of visual experiences

that supports the story of lilly’s history. Overhead light coves and elegant columns architecturally define the various spaces in

lilly’s lobby and Heritage Hall exhibit. Terrazzo floor patterns support story-telling through their “quoting” of the historic language

of science, and hexagonal mosaic carpet patterns make reference to structures found in scientific chemistry.

An empty shell space within a retail shopping center was transformed into a contemporary, state-of-the-art and forward thinking

dental practice. The small footprint of the building called for a vibrant color palette. Capitalizing on the opportunity of an already

existing building height, Rowland designed a sloping 22 foot ceiling, creating a welcoming entry that attracts not only customers

but passersby. Three dimensional massing of the wall and ceiling planes was designed to convey a sense of privacy for the

patient, yet allows for a synergistic workflow for the doctor and his staff. The scale of the opening into the operatories, absent of

doors, accomplishes both of these desires.
