2015-16 Academic Term 1

WELCOME

Welcome to our 2015-16 School Year!

The Royal Conservatory School (RCS) has just finished an exciting summer filled with extracurricular programming, summer camps and extended classes and we are looking forward to a terrific 2015-16 school year.

I encourage you to participate in our unique and enriched course offerings this school year. New Music Appreciation classes are the perfect way for adults to develop their musical knowledge, providing a diverse selection of over 20 new courses this fall! For the theory lover, there is an assortment of courses from Basic Rudiments through advanced levels, which include accelerated 14-week courses and regular 28-week sessions. Our NEW Smart Start™ classes offer an unparalleled learning experience for ages 0-6 with a unique curriculum that draws on the expertise of top music educators, arts instructors, and neuroscientists. In addition, the RCS’s signature program, The Music Enrichment Program (MEP), for school-aged students (ages 3-18), features an integrated curriculum that develops the whole musician through individual instruction, theoretical study, group and ensemble participation, and ongoing assessment and enrichment opportunities. You can register for a variety of ensembles or group classes for different instruments, and observe or participate in engaging master classes led by eminent RCS faculty. From beginning guitar to Samba, Carnatic violin to singing – there truly is something for everyone.

We are pleased to provide a new online course catalogue for you to explore our diverse course offerings with ease. For added convenience, students will now be able to easily check important dates, upcoming events, school closures, etc., via the new “Current Student” tab located on the main page of our website (launching September 2015).

Take advantage of all that the RCM has to offer! Enjoy reasonably priced practice facilities (new pricing this fall), attend free master classes through The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists and The Glenn Gould School, and enjoy special ticket offers to selected concerts at our celebrated concert venue, Koerner Hall, which hosts over 100 concerts ranging from an assortment of all genres including, pop, rock, world music, classical and jazz.

We are fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated students filling our halls with music throughout the year and look forward to welcoming you this fall. Thank you for your continued support of The Royal Conservatory School, and for making us your music school of choice.

With gratitude,

Susan Cook Director, The Royal Conservatory School

STUDENT ASSESSMENTThe Royal Conservatory School provides an internationally recognized program of music study through effectively sequenced courses from beginner to advanced levels. We believe ongoing assessment is an integral component of music education for students at all levels, as it enables students to set goals and measure their progress, and results in the most motivational and rewarding experience for students learning an instrument.

A formal exam is one form of assessment, but simulated exams and performance evaluations are also available to Conservatory School

students. You will work together with your Conservatory School teacher to determine a personalized assessment plan.

Royal Conservatory Examinations

Students enrolled in the Music Enrichment Program are entitled to two Royal Conservatory Examinations (one theory & one practical) per year as part of their program.

To book an exam, please perform the following steps.

1. If you have not yet registered for an RCM Account: Please see page 4 and follow the steps to register for an RCM Account.

2. Speak with your Conservatory School Teacher: Once you have an RCM account, discuss with your individual instruction teacher what level you will be pursuing, and in which session (Winter / April (piano only) / Spring / Summer) you plan to complete your exam.

3. Complete your RCM profile: Log into your RCM online account and click “My Account”. Check the box “I participate in Examinations”. After clicking “SAVE” you will be asked to specify your role (Parent, Teacher or Student). If you select Student, you will be asked if you have an RCME number. You will have an RCME number if you have previously taken a Royal Conservatory Examination. If you are new to exams, select “No” and you will be assigned an RCME number when you register for your exam. If you select “Parent”, you can then add multiple family members and their RCME numbers under your account. You will receive notification and further instructions by email, if an account has been created on your behalf by our administrative team.

Simulated Examinations

A simulated exam is like a dress-rehearsal for your scheduled Royal Conservatory Examination. A Royal Conservatory examiner will lead you through the steps of a regular exam and you will be provided with a letter grade and informal critique. The experience of performing under pressure and the feedback you receive will help you to further refine your performance and technique with your Conservatory School teacher in preparation for your real Royal Conservatory Examination.

Simulated exams are offered three times each year, prior to the winter, spring and summer examination sessions. To register for a simulated examination, visit the RCS Student Portal.

NOTE: Simulated exams are included in the Music Enrichment Program (MEP). Conservatory School students not enrolled in the MEP may register for simulated exams at an additional cost.

Performance Evaluations

Performance evaluations are available for solo, duo or collaborative performances. If you have a piece you have been working on – be it classical, jazz or contemporary – a performance evaluation enables you to receive

Page 10: Royal Conservatory School Student Handbook · From beginning guitar to Samba, ... Thank you for your continued support of The Royal Conservatory School, and for making us your music

8 Royal Conservatory School Student Handbook

feedback and critique on your playing and technique from one of the Conservatory School’s faculty members. Performance Evaluations also give you the opportunity to work on a piece with a partner or small ensemble and receive feedback on your collective performance.

All participants will receive a letter grade and informal critique. Those receiving the highest grades will be invited to participate in a Royal Conservatory School showcase recital.

Performance evaluations are available for Conservatory School students at all levels. To register for a performance evaluation, visit the RCS Student Portal.

Audit Royal Conservatory of Music Master Classes

Conservatory School students are invited and encouraged to expand their musical education experience by joining the public audience for master classes delivered by world-renowned artists for students of the Glenn Gould School and The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. With a variety of master classes each year this is a unique opportunity to witness talented artists in action.

For more information on master classes visit: http://learning.rcmusic.ca/glenn-gould-school/master-classes

&

STUDENT RECITALSConservatory School students are invited to share their talents through monthly performance opportunities in our beautiful concert venues. Some performance opportunities will feature different aspects of our student community (e.g., Adult Students), but every student will have the chance to perform in Conservatory Theatre or Mazzoleni Concert Hall, with concerts hosted by Conservatory School staff and faculty.

For details about upcoming performance opportunities, visit the RCS Current Student Portal. Discuss opportunities for performance with your Conservatory School teacher to set your goals for this academic year.

Following discussion with your teacher, sign up for recitals by registering online. Links for online registration will be available through the RCS Current Student Portal and through student email.

We are committed to the success of our students by providing them with a well-rounded, enriching music education. The policies set out below are aimed at helping us achieve those ends as well as the School’s overarching mission.

Once your registration is complete, you will receive a confirmation of your registration by email.

1.2 Priority is given to students registered in the Music Enrichment Program as well as those registered for a full term of lessons.

1.3 Occasional adult registrants may be limited to lesson times that fall within the non-peak periods. Non-peak periods are as follows:

1.4 Students may not commence instruction, whether private lesson or group class, until registration has been confirmed and payment has been processed. Students are not considered registered until payment has been received. A verbal agreement with your teacher and/or payment of a deposit does not constitute registration.

1.5 Students may not register for the next term or any additional lessons or classes until all outstanding balances are paid. Students who register with tuition outstanding for any previous academic years will be withdrawn from their course of study, and any fees paid will be applied to outstanding balances.

1.6 Students are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. If a desired class is full, students may place themselves on the wait list for that class. Students on the wait list for a particular class will be contacted first come, first served, in the event that a spot opens up in the class. Students who enrolled from a wait list will have their tuition pro-rated if applicable.

2015-16 Academic Term 13

1.7 Late registration for the Music Enrichment Program and all group classes is accepted through the month of December, subject to space and availability. Tuition fees are calculated according to the month of registration.

1.8 New students registering for the Music Enrichment Program may be asked to complete a brief theory and practical assessment to facilitate placement in the program.

1.9 It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or registrant to ensure compliance with age and/or skill prerequisites when registering for a class with prerequisites posted. No exceptions will be made to the transfer and/ or withdrawal policies due to failure to comply with posted prerequisites. Class age restrictions require students to have reached the indicated age as of December 31st, of the current academic year. For summer semester classes, the age requirement is as of June 1st.

2.0 Communication2.1 Email is our first line of communication with students. It is the responsibility of the student or parent/guardian to check their email for school updates and to ensure that their email account remains active.

2.2 Please keep your online profile up-to-date and make any necessary changes to your contact information as soon as possible.

3.0 Fees3.1 For new student registrations, there is a $135 non-refundable deposit. All new students are eligible for one, 30-minute trial lesson with a Royal Conservatory School teacher of their choice. Once the student-teacher match has been confirmed, $100 of the $135 deposit will be applied towards the tuition amount. No refunds of the deposit will be made unless the RCS is unable to provide a suitable teacher-student match.

3.2 Fees are payable to The Royal Conservatory. All monetary transactions, including materials fees, are processed by the Royal Conservatory School and must be made through Registration & Student Services. Students may not give any payment to instructors.

3.3 Tuition is due prior to the start of the program. Payment plans are available and can be set up at the time of registration. A non-refundable flat fee of $50 will apply to all payment plan registrations upfront with the initial payment. Bank account information or a credit card is required to take part in the payment plans. Selecting a payment plan represents a commitment to the full tuition amount. Payments may only be stopped if a withdrawal is granted by RCS Administration.

3.4 Remaining balances may be paid off in full at any time.

3.5 Dishonoured (NSF) cheques and declined pre-authorized debit and credit card payments are subject to a $25 service charge.

3.6 If a payment is declined, the student will receive a notification by email and is expected to remit payment immediately.

3.7 In the case of an overdue or declined payment, the student’s instructor will be given notice to cease instruction and disallow attendance immediately. Instruction missed by the student as a result of an overdue account cannot be made up under any circumstance. All applicable fees and outstanding balances must be paid in full before lessons or classes can be resumed.

3.8 If a student misses more than one payment and/or if the student is over 30 days late on a payment, any scholarships or bursaries that the student received may be revoked.

3.9 Any refunds granted due to class cancellation will be refunded in full. Tuition credit refunds or school-initiated refunds will also be granted in full.

4.0 Transfers4.1 Our primary goal is to ensure that students have a positive learning environment and a productive relationship with their private lessons instructor. If a student wishes to transfer to another teacher, they must contact [email protected] at least 3 business days before the next lesson. There is no fee to transfer unless this privilege is abused. The RCS office will inform the instructor of their former student’s transfer at an appropriate time.

4.2 Students taking group classes who wish to transfer to another section of the same class should contact [email protected] at least 5 business days prior to the start of the first class. A $25 fee is applied to any transfer requests made between 4 business days before the start of class and the commencement of the third class. No transfer requests will be granted after the third class. Students are limited to one class transfer per term, unless the transfer is recommended by the teacher. All transfer requests will be considered based on space and availability and must be received in writing.

4.3 Students wishing to transfer from group to private instruction can make a special request to [email protected]. A $25 transfer fee will apply.

4.4 Exceptional circumstances regarding transfers will be considered on a case- by-case basis. Please contact Registration & Student Services at 416.408.2825 or [email protected] to discuss a transfer.

5.0 Missed Lessons and ClassesAs one of the largest and most respected institutions in the world dedicated to music education, we expect our students to attend all of their lessons and

Page 17: Royal Conservatory School Student Handbook · From beginning guitar to Samba, ... Thank you for your continued support of The Royal Conservatory School, and for making us your music

2015-16 Academic Term 15

classes and to participate actively in their musical development. Our teachers are skilled professionals who have reserved a time in their schedule for you, regardless of whether or not you attend. For these reasons, we have instituted the following policies for missed lessons and classes.

5.1 Missed private lessons

• Students are permitted to miss up to 2 lessons per academic year, provided that the student/parent gives the teacher at least 24 hours notice. If you need to cancel a lesson, please notify your teacher directly ([email protected]). Make-up lessons will be scheduled during the designated make-up weeks at the end of each term. All make-ups will be scheduled at the existing lesson time if possible, subject to space and availability. Please limit your lesson cancellations to illness and emergencies only.

• Your teacher is not required to make up any lessons in excess of two; however, at your teacher’s discretion, additional make-ups may be provided.

• Please note: should your teacher not receive at least 24 hours notice, a make- up lesson will not be scheduled and the student will be charged for the missed lesson.

5.2 Missed group classes: There is no make-up for missed group classes.

5.3 Attendance: Students are expected to be present and on time for all private lessons and group classes. Time lost as a result of student lateness will not be made up.

6.0 Cancellations6.1 School closure: For school closures due to inclement weather, please be advised that The Royal Conservatory does not follow school board closure announcements. In the event of a closure, we will send out email notifications or text messages to all affected students. To check the building status, please call 416.206.8584. Any lessons or classes canceled due to weather will be rescheduled. If the lesson or class cannot be rescheduled at a convenient time, a tuition credit or refund will be issued to the original method of payment.

6.2 Teacher absence: For private lessons that are canceled due to teacher absence, a makeup will be offered at a mutually convenient time. If a teacher is unavailable to teach a group class, it is the School’s policy to find a suitable substitute for the class. If no substitute is available, the class may be rescheduled to a later date. If the class cannot be rescheduled, a tuition credit or refund to the original method of payment will be issued.

6.3 Insufficient enrollment: The RCS reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrolment. If this occurs, we will notify students/parents as soon as possible prior to the start of class and make every attempt to reschedule each student for another class at a convenient time. If this is not

Page 18: Royal Conservatory School Student Handbook · From beginning guitar to Samba, ... Thank you for your continued support of The Royal Conservatory School, and for making us your music

16 Royal Conservatory School Student Handbook

possible, a tuition credit or refund to the original method of payment will be issued. Decisions regarding class cancellations will be made 5 business days before the scheduled start of the class.
