SCHOOL SUPPLIES Gifts of Learning Last Forever

[SS-GOLLF]

Kim and I want to thank all of you who donated supplies. Your time and effort is very much appreciated. We made a difference in children’s lives, and that is important to all of us. Here is a letter I received from Ms. Sherry Watts, Principal at Minneola Elementary School:

Dear Residents of Royal Highlands,

Thank you so much for your generous contribution to the students of Minneola Elementary Charter School. Many of our students begin the school year without the necessary supplies. Without supplies, students and teachers struggle to engage in active learning. With over 55% of our students on free/reduced lunch, many families simply do not have the funds to purchase supplies. We have created, with your help, a program where all students are able to have the supplies they need to be successful. We strive to have high expectations for all our students; your gifts have made it possible to help these students reach goals of success. Once again, thank you for helping so many children begin the school year ready for success. As the home of the Mustangs, you have helped us “Gallop to Success” together.

In Thanks, Sherry Watts, Principal Minneola Elementary School

USEFUL INFO ABOUT PASSWORDS

Ever more frequently, we hear about accounts being compromised and identity info being stolen. If you intend to use the same username and password for all your online sites and one of your accounts is compromised, it’s only a matter of time until your other sites are compromised, too.

If you can establish a different password for each online account, you will significantly reduce the risk of having one

password compromised and getting hurt in multiple ways. Here is something you might want to consider. If you have a root password like GoEagles and add the name of the resource, you’ll have unique passwords that are easy to remember.

For example:

GoEagles!FB for Facebook

GoEagles!Li for LinkedIn

GoEagles!AZ for Amazon

Recycle Yard Waste Reduce Storm Water Runoff

Protect the Waterfront Although garden maintenance will always create waste, the necessity for pruning can be minimized by choosing the right plant for the right place and by not over-watering and over-fertilizing. Applying the seventh Florida-Friendly Landscaping Principle, Recycle, much of what yard waste there is can be returned to the garden. Any grass clippings should be left on the lawn, where they will supply nutrients as they decompose. For the same reason, use fallen leaves and pine needles as mulch for landscape beds. Although heaping piles of compost are not permitted in our community, maintaining a small contained composter, discreetly placed, is possible. Refer to the EDIS Publication, Compost Tips for the Home Gardener [edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep323] and The Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Handbook [fyn.ifas.ufl.edu/materials/FYN_Handbook_vSept09.pdf], page 40, for more information about setting up and maintaining a composter.

Landscape Principle #8 is Reduce Storm Water Runoff. Excessive irrigation and heavy rainfall, instead of being absorbed by your landscape, will leave your yard as runoff, carrying with it pollutants, such as grass clippings, excess fertilizer, and oils. The runoff makes its way to the storm drain, which takes it to the nearest pond, not to the water treatment facility where home waste goes. This untreated water can contain a high level of nitrogen from fertilizer and grass clippings and can be detrimental to bodies of water. The best way to reduce runoff is to make sure any water that falls in your yard soaks into the ground there. This can be accomplished, before planting, by creating swales and rain gardens to contain water until it can be absorbed. Unfortunately, since our landscapes are already in place, this can’t be done without great expense. However, there are several things we can do to reduce the runoff. When adding a new walk or patio, make it a permeable surface, using bricks, gravel, or mulch. If you have rain gutters, make sure the downspouts carry the water to a porous surface. In a less visible spot in the backyard, attach a rain barrel to the downspout to collect some rain water to use on your garden. To lessen the pollutants being carried to the ponds, don’t use fertilizers or pesticides excessively and sweep up any fertilizer or grass clippings from paved surfaces.

The final principle, Protect the Waterfront, is closely tied to the previous one. Whether or not you have waterfront property, any water not contained in your yard is runoff, which can pollute bodies of water. If your property abuts water, whether natural or man-made, a 10-foot maintenance-free zone should be kept between your yard and the body of water to lessen the chance of pollutants reaching the water. This maintenance-free zone should be landscaped with plants that will grow well without chemicals [fertilizers or pesticides], and no grass clippings should be allowed to wash into the water. Property on a waterfront is protected by rules and regulations so, before making any changes to the area, check to see whether a permit is needed.

To sum up the nine Principles . . . If you succeed with the first one, Right Plant, Right Place, the rest, for the most part, will be taken care of. Some things to do to create a more Florida-Friendly yard are fairly easy and inexpensive; others require more labor and expense. The EDIS Publication, Checklist of Florida-Friendly Landscape Practices [edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep413] lists many ways to use the principles from inexpensive and easy to expensive and labor intensive. To find more information about each of the principles, refer to The Florida Yards and Neighborhood Handbook [see web address above] and the Florida-Friendly Guidelines, compiled by a Royal Highlands Garden Club committee. It outlines how the pr inciples can be applied to gardening in our community. It is available on our Royal Highlands website under Documents. For an extensive list of Florida-Friendly plants with detailed information about each one, use the book, The Florida-Friendly Landscaping Guide to Plant Selection & Landscape Design. [Copies are available for borrowing from the Activities Office.]

NO watering between 10 am and 4 pm.

You may water one time on your watering day ... NOT once in the morning and once in the evening.

No single zone may run for more than one hour.

Remember to water twice a week only if it is needed, not just because it’s your watering day.

12 Simple Ways to Save Water & Protect Florida’s Watersheds

Saving Water Outdoors: More than half of residential water use occurs outdoors. Watering wisely outside the home promotes healthier lawns and landscapes and will save some folks at least 50 percent of the water they use outdoors.

1. Water your lawn like a winner. Water ing your lawn in the early morning minimizes evaporation and waste. Lawns only need watering once every 2 to 3 days in the summer and once every 7 to 10 days in the winter. A hearty rain can eliminate the need for watering for up to 10 days in the winter. Also, know your local irrigation rules and regulations!

2. Make tuna cans do double duty. Lawns only need about one-half to three-quarters of an inch of water at a time. To determine how long it takes your irrigation system to put out half an inch of water, place tuna cans around the yard and measure the water collected in half an hour. Place a dozen cans around your yard to test for even distribution of water.

3. Sprinkle your yard with care. Install water -efficient sprinklers and a rain-sensor switch to override your system when it rains. Check timing device settings regularly. Install low-volume soaker hoses or drip irrigation systems for planting beds with shrubs and flowers. Make sure you are watering your plants and not

the street or driveway.

4. Celebrate your surroundings. Landscape with water -thrifty ornamental grasses, plants, and trees. Group plants together based on similar water needs. Mulch to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

5. Avoid buzz cuts and backaches. Raising your lawn mower blade to its highest setting encourages grass roots to grow deeper and grass blades to hold moisture longer than with a closely clipped lawn. Cut off no more than one-third of a blade of grass at a time. Apply fertilizers sparingly and use fertilizers that contain slow-release, water-insoluble forms of nitrogen.

6. Buy a nozzle for the nose of your hose. Place a shut-off nozzle on your hose to control the flow of water so you only use what you need. Remember to turn the water off at the faucet to prevent leaks.

Stay tuned for next month’s conclusion of these easy 12 Steps that will help you, your community, and the City of Leesburg in our conservation effort. For more info about protecting Florida’s water resources, go to:

RESIDENT CELEBRATION Bakey & Betty

Husband & Wife Duo Monday, September 15, 7 pm

Great Hall [Always the 3rd Monday of each Month]

Resident Celebration presents Bakey & Betty, a warmly winning husband-wife duo. Bakey, a native of Los Angeles, migrated to Florida at the age of 19, as a result of an offer from the Walt Disney Company. Betty, a native of Indianapolis, made her debut at the age of 2 in the arms of Yul Brenner in the touring company of The King and I. Bakey’s guitar, coupled with Betty’s washboard, form a hard-driving rhythm section for their over-the-top vocal harmonies, while Betty’s solos take the listener to someplace dreamy. The high caliber of musicianship for each of them has made a hit with their audiences from theme parks to concert halls worldwide. Their sound is a blend of old time country, jazz, ragtime, and international music. It will be a lively evening of entertainment.

We will celebrate September Birthdays and Anniversaries, meet New Residents, and enjoy refreshments after the show. Due to an increase in entertainers’ fees and a decrease in attendance, admittance will now be $6 p/p at the door. Residents with a birthday in September will be admitted FREE.

Remember, this season, ALL GUESTS will have a chance to receive a gift. So, whether it’s your birthday or your un-birthday, you have a chance to receive one of our gifts.

New Residents will receive a FREE PASS to a future Resident Celebration.

ROYAL THEATER PLAYERS September Backstage News

General Meeting: Now that the long hot summer is behind us, general meetings will convene once again on Monday, September 8, at 1 pm in the Meeting Room. Fun activities and light refreshments will be served.

Olympia Book Club: One final audition for the Olympia Book Club, a one-act play written and directed by our very own Joan Missell, will be held on Monday, September 15, 12:30-2:30 pm, in the Rec Center Meeting Room. Joan’s play, along with Almost the Bride of Dracula, a one-act comedy written by Dennis Snee, will debut on Thursday, October 28, and will continue to run October 31 and November 1 and 2. Following its debut, Olympia Book Club will continue to travel to a number of venues, both in and out of Royal Highlands. Those auditioning for the five female roles can choose if they’d like to be considered for just the October/November performances, just the traveling performances, or for both. While actors will hold their scripts [no memorization!], there are entrances and exits, blocking, and real acting with hand props, etc. Copies of the script for the Olympia Book Club are available at the Activities Office.

Want to know more about what it takes to stage a play or how to improve your acting skills? Addy Danielson and Reatha Oakley will present a [not just for] Director’s Workshop at 2 pm on Fr iday, September 26, in the Rec Center Meeting Room. In addition to a brief overview of the steps leading to opening night, along with how to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, Addy and Reatha will discuss various aspects of stagecraft, including blocking, developing a believable character, and how to prepare for an audition. This workshop is for everyone! Because mater ials will be prepared, please send an email to the address below if you will attend. Look for more info on the RTP bulletin board or on the RH website.

KITCHEN BAND Wednesday, September 10, 11:15 am, Great Hall

If there is a bit of a ham in you, the Royal Highlands Kitchen Band is the outlet for your talents. Member s think it is the most important outreach activity they do; it’s fun and rewarding. It feels good to brighten up the day for the residents of nursing homes, rehab centers, and assisted living facilities. You can see us in action in the many photos displayed on our bulletin board in the Rec Center.

Rehearsals will be on Wednesday, September 10, 17, and 24, from 11:15 am until 12:30 pm. In October, the show goes on the road on Wednesday mornings. We carpool to our destination, one of 11 facilities in Leesburg, Clermont, Tavares, Mt. Dora, or Winter Garden. Show times and distances vary but are always on Wednesdays, usually leaving around 9 am. We normally go out for lunch afterwards.

Both men and women are encouraged to participate. Singing and dancing are an important part of the entertainment, along with costumes and other props to make it fun. Members need an instrument to play, a kazoo or something from the kitchen, like percussion instruments made from pots, lids, graters, wooden spoons, sifters, or bells. We also use the piano and harmonica and some recorded music. It’s amazing to see how many in our audiences sing along with the old favorite tunes.

THE ENTERTAINMENT SERIES PRESENTS . . .

Malt Shoppe Memories Friday, November 14, 7 pm, Great Hall

Malt Shoppe Memories is more than just a Doo-Wop and old-time Rock & Roll singing group that delivers unique entertainment to your audience each and every time. Focusing on a musical era that could be considered the best times of our lives, the group transforms its listeners back to their teenage years thru vocal and visual renditions of songs from the past. Within minutes, audiences connect with the performers thru a shared love of 1950’s and early 1960’s music. The various costumes and choreography used during each show reflect the styles and showmanship of that era. Malt Shoppe Memories is much more than just a singing group!

DINNER DATE GROUP Wednesday, September 3, 4-6 pm

Rec Center Card Room

We will have our Kick-Off meeting for the 2014/15 season on Wednesday, September 3, 4 to 6 pm, in the Rec Center Card Room. If you plan to attend, please bring an appetizer to share and BYOB.

The goal of the Club is to have each couple dine with different couples monthly to get to know other residents of our community. Dinners are held monthly during October, November, January, February, March, and April. We encourage new residents, as well as current residents, to become involved so each may get to know the other. This is a great opportunity to do so and make new residents feel welcome.

Small groups consist of three couples per house. One couple from each group is the host, and the other two couples are the guests. The dinner date is held in the home of the host couple, whose role is to contact the guest couples the first of the month to agree on a date and time when all can meet. The host provides the entrée, and guests bring vegetables, salads, and/or dessert. If the group is in agreement, you may have brunch or lunch instead of dinner.

If you are not sure this is for you, come to our meeting on September 3 for more info and to visit with current members. If you are interested but can’t attend the September 3 meeting, call me, and I will answer any questions you may have. Everyone must be signed up by September 19. GARDEN CLUB No Club Meeting in September

Two Workshops for September TBA

There will be no meeting of the Garden Club during the month of September due to the replacement of the air conditioning system in the Rec Center. While the work is underway, there will be no air conditioning in the building. However, the Garden Club will attempt to sponsor two workshops. Dates, times, and locations of these workshops will be emailed to you. The information will also appear on our club bulletin board and on the kiosk by the mailboxes. Watch for those emails.

August’s program was very interesting and well attended. Master Gardener, Bob Moesch, presented a program about Cacti & Succulents. We learned there are over 3,000 varieties of cacti and 5,600 varieties of succulents, with more being discovered. These hardy little plants provide interest and beauty to gardens and require little care. Plants are available at most plant stores or can be propagated from parent plants. Information about cacti can be found at:

www.cactiguide.com

The Garden Club is sponsoring a panel discussion for our October meeting. Our Master Gardeners will answer your gardening questions. Please email your questions to Carol Smith [[email protected]] by Saturday, September 20. Also, following the panel discussion will be our Annual Plant Auction. Everyone is encouraged to br ing their plant starts, garden volunteer plants and cuttings, and even gardening tools and pots. Auction prices start at $0.25 so bring your piggy banks.

Tip of the Month: A handful of Old-Fashioned Quaker Oats placed with a new plant dur ing planting will supply essential nutrients to help the new plant grow. [Tip from club member Marcia Padgett]

ROYAL BOOKWORMS Devil in the Grove By: Gilbert King

Moderator: Mary Ellen Bendick Thursday, September 11, 1:30 pm, Library

When you think of Florida, you visualize sunshine, beaches, Disney World, citrus, gators, and other critters. Back in history, it also meant segregation, the Klu Klux Klan, corrupt law officers, paradise, and purgatory. In the 1940’s in Groveland, Florida, four young black men were accused of raping a white woman.

Thurgood Marshall, an attorney and leader of the NAACP, agreed to seek justice for these innocent young men in the Florida courts. The book is also about the NAACP’s effor t to secure justice for Afr ican Amer icans, especially in the Jim Crow south.

As you read about Florida’s history of the crackers, whip-wielding cowboys who settled our state and the coming of the railroad to the Keys, you need to learn about the underside of our history . . . the existence of the KKK, Jim Crow laws, and good ole boy politics of your own Lake County.

Join us on September 11, the 2nd Thursday of the month, to be enlightened about life in Lake County in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Please join us!

ROYAL HIGHLANDS DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB

Because Duplicate Bridge is a timed event, the Royal Highlands Duplicate Bridge Club will exper iment with a Round Timer.

The Director will set the clock at the beginning of the game to provide 7-1/2 minutes per board [the ACBL recommendation] and will keep track of the amount of time remaining in each round.

Players are expected to be aware of the time used and remaining in each round.

If pairs have not started bidding with 2 minutes left in the round, the Director may disallow the board, and the pairs will be given a No Play. Our Club will not allow Late Plays.

To speed up play, players should claim, rather than play it out, as soon as they know the outcome of the board. They should be sure to state their line of play.

Upcoming scheduled classes for Tuesday afternoons:

Intermediate Declarer Play by Lois Belliveau, 8 classes starting September 30. Please sign up at the Activities Office. The cost of $40 p/p includes a book for the first 16 people who purchase tickets. To purchase the book, Declarer Play at Bridge, A Quiz Book, by Barbara Seagram & David Bird, just go to Amazon.com.

Play of the Hand by Ron Foreman, 8 classes starting January 13, 2015.

Don’t forget that the Monday Night Pairs Party Bridge will become an ACBL-Sanctioned Duplicate Bridge Game in October.

Keep reading the Happenings and watching the Duplicate Bridge Club Activity page on the Royal Highlands website for the latest news and announcements. We look forward to seeing you at the bridge tables.

ROYAL SCRAPAHOLICS Wednesday, September 3 & 17

9 am-5 pm Rec Center Craft Room

Scrapbooking covers multiple activities, including traditional scrapbooking, genealogy scrapping, and card-making. Come join the fun. Come for the day or just for a few hours. Some of us bring a lunch. This is a great way to release all that creativity hiding inside you. And, enjoy the camaraderie as we share our tools, ideas, equipment, and knowledge. Remember, card-making is part of scrapping as most people will save your wonderful cards.

Tidbit of the Month: The first scrapbooks in early 1800’s were hardly about preserving photos as cameras weren’t created yet. So what sort of scraps did the people collect in their albums? Mainly mementos, such as quotes, poems, calling cards [decorated cards left behind at a friend’s home], religious cards, paper cuts, and other ephemera.

BICYCLE CLUB [No Club Meetings until October 6]

The Royal Highlands Bicycle Club has suspended meetings for the summer. Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 6, at 4 pm in the Rec Center.

We still have community rides every Saturday morning and on all even-numbered weekdays, starting at 8 am. Dates and times for all rides are listed on our website:

www.rhbike.webs.com

Don’t miss our October 6 meeting if you have any interest in the overnight bike trip to the Florida Keys. The November 10 thru 14 trip will be the main topic of discussion at this meeting. We will stay overnight in Florida City on November 11 and Marathon Key on November 12 and 13. Go to our website for more info, or call me. Room rates for the 4 nights will average $120 per night.

Summer is almost over so it’s time to plan those scenic fall bike rides. If you haven’t had your bike tuned up recently, now is a good time. Don’t be caught out on a trail and have a breakdown, flat tire, broken spoke, or snapped cable. Bicycles do require maintenance.

As always, wear your helmet and enjoy the ride!

GUN CLUB Tuesday, September 16, 7 pm

Rec Center Meeting Room

The Royal Highlands Gun Club is a co-ed club of residents with a common interest in Firearms Sports. The Club supports the tenets of the 2nd Amendment with regards to the rights of citizens to keep and bear arms. The Club’s emphasis is on firearms safety, training, education, and social events. All residents are invited to attend a Gun Club meeting to see if the Club meets their interests. Meetings are held in the Rec Center Meeting Room at 7 pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dues are $15 p/p per year or $25 per couple. One family member is also required to be a member of the NRA.

It’s September, and a lot of snowbirds are returning from up north. If you have any interest in firearms, you are invited to come to our Gun Club meetings or join us at our weekly pistol shoot at the Eustis Gun Club in Tavares. The Eustis range is an outdoor range, and we always enjoy the time spent outdoors each Tuesday morning. This shoot is followed by lunch at a local eatery. For more info about our weekly shoots, contact Dave Bowles [787-7690].

Gun Lore Tidbit for the Month: “. . . Certainly one of the chief guarantees of freedom under any government, no matter how popular and respected, is the right of the citizens to keep and bear arms. . . . the right of the citizens to bear arms is just one guarantee against arbitrary government and one more safeguard against tyranny . . . 8-Ball: No Tournament held

Tournaments resume on Wednesday, September 3, at 7 pm with 9-Ball.

Senior 8-Ball Travel League: Play will resume on November 4, with the Royal Highlands Gators hosting Kings Ridge 1. The Plantation Manatees will host the Royal Highlands Knights.

Open Billiards: As always, every night is Open Billiards night for all residents. For most residents, the favorite night has been Monday, and the game has been Challenge 8-Ball. The first two players who come in are partnered, and they are challenged by the next two players to come thru the door, and so on, as more players arrive. The object is to stay at the number one table for as long as you can.

You do not have to be a member of the Billiards Club to participate in Open Billiards.

Will Benoit, 459-0307

LADY SHARKETTES Mondays, 2-4 pm

Rec Center Billiards Room

We look forward to seeing many of our members returning from summer trips. Our Monday games have continued, and we welcome new ladies who would like to participate.

We don’t have designated teaching times but are willing to help anyone who needs help. Beginning in September, we will get back on schedule and have a tournament scheduled at the end of each/most months in the game we’ve worked/practiced on for that month. So join us, and you may see your face in one of our winner photos on the wall.

We play as individuals, partners, or round robins, depending on the number of people present. Different games help us learn new skills as well as stretch our memory and eye/hand coordination. We usually work our way thru the following games: Golf, Double-V 8-Ball, Pea Ball, 3-Ball, 6-Ball, 7-Ball, 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and Cut Throat.

We like to have fun and expect to schedule a luncheon during the year. Come make some new friends and learn.

TENNIS CLUB Potluck Dinner

Friday, September 19, 6 pm Rec Center Meeting Room

Start the new Tennis Club season right by attending our Potluck Dinner on Friday, September 19. Come catch up on your friends’ summer news and travels and enjoy good food, as well. All members and their guests are invited.

Club members can be looking ahead to a busy fall and winter schedule of tennis activities and soon will be able to mark their calendars for upcoming events. First off, Inter-Community Tournaments will resume in October . Dates and signup sheets will be posted on our bulletin boards as they are scheduled.

The Tennis Club still needs a volunteer to update the bulletin boards in the Rec Center and outside near the courts. Anyone interested in helping should contact one of our officers.

In addition, the club members will be electing new officers for 2015. Nominations will be open soon, and the election will be held in November. Consider this opportunity to volunteer and help your Club continue planning and organizing future events.

Don’t forget to come out for Mixed Doubles matches at 8 am on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. It’s a good way to get back in the swing of things if you’ve been off the courts for summer or longer.

Tennis players are a devoted bunch, who continue to show up, when they can, for the exercise and camaraderie of the game. See you on the courts this month!

Linda Smith, 787-3819

PICKLEBALL CLUB Friday, September 5, 3 pm Rec Center Meeting Room

We are experiencing a lot of new inquiries about our Club. Membership numbers are growing, too. Our members are doing a wonderful job introducing new residents to the sport!

Until our own court construction is complete, opportunities to meet other players, play the game, or just observe how the game is played, are at PEAR Park, the state park located directly across from The Legacy community.

PEAR Park: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday mornings at 8:30 am. Lessons by Pete & Joanne Patterson convene at 8:30 am on Saturdays. Evening times are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 6 pm. Please note that all levels of play are welcome. You are integrated in a fair rotation system.

We continue to sell the ever-popular shirts and baseball caps bearing the Royal Highlands name and sandhill crane embroidery. If you would like to purchase a shirt, call Patti Garas [365-6924].

If you are interested in Pickleball but haven’t met anyone who plays, please feel free to come meet us at our monthly meetings on the 1st Friday of each month at 3 pm in the Rec Center Meeting Room. Annual dues of $5 p/p are for September 2014 thru October 2015. Please feel free to attend so you can meet other Pickleballers and learn about our activities. See you on the courts!

Welcome Back, Everybody! Let’s get ready for another great bowling season. If you are new to Royal Highlands and missed our organizational meeting on August 28, do not despair! Just contact me or show up at the lanes at 9 am on Thursdays.

We are a mixed, non-sanctioned league of all sorts of talent. If you need a little help or some brushing up, Leesburg Lanes is now offer ing 4 FREE bowling classes on Thursday evenings at 7 pm this season.

For those of you who bowled with us last season, please do not throw away your league reward card [the one that gives you 20% off at the snack bar]. The benefits continue to accrue this season.

According to Leesburg Lanes, Monday afternoons will be Certifiable Mondays. For those who want to, that means you will have the opportunity to bowl on another day to reach the required 21 games needed to get your sanction card. These Monday slots will begin during the first week in October.

It is never too late to join our league. If you can’t make it on any given week, you may pre-bowl or use a sub to help your team. Our goal is to enjoy the game of bowling and to have a good time while bowling.

If you think you might enjoy our league, please call or email me. Our season runs for 30 weeks. Lucky Strikes!

H IGHLANDERS M IXED BOWLING LEAGUE

The 2014/15 Highlanders Bowling Organization is a non-sanctioned league. Our League’s kickoff meeting was on August 5, at the Leesburg AMF Bowling Center, 2813 West Main Street, Leesburg.

Official league bowling began on August 19, with practice starting at 12:15 pm and scored bowling starting at 12:30 pm. League fees will be $15 per week, of which $11.20 covers the cost of bowling, and the balance of $3.80 is placed into our league prize fund account.

There are 30 weeks of actual bowling. We do not bowl during the weeks of Thanksgiving [Nov. 25], Christmas [Dec. 25], and New Year’s [Dec. 30].

Our League officers are President Ralph Daniels, Vice President Carolyn Case, and Secretary/Treasurer, Judy Blacik.

This season, the league begins with 15 teams [a combination of men and women] with a playing strength of 4 players per team. The league is open to all skill levels and is handicapped-based. Last season, the league was comprised of 14 teams, with bowlers from the communities of Arlington Ridge, Highland Lakes, Legacy, The Plantation, and Royal Highlands. Our skills and scores were just as diverse. Each year, our bowler base grows, and our league continues to expand. So gather yourself, your gear, and come join our league. You’ll do GREAT!

Judy Blacik [787-5763] is our league secretary and treasurer. Contact Judy with inquiries.

N IFTY-N INERS Tuesdays at 12:45 pm

Monarch Golf Club Front Porch

This hot summer has been a good time to try out The Monarch Golf Club. The course is lush green, thanks to great rainstorms, and the restaurant has expanded its hours to better accommodate you after your rounds. [Y ou can even order some tasty pizza now!] And, there are new golf events and membership opportunities for residents to enjoy.

One of the best ways to meet fellow golfers is to try the more social formats. The Nifty Niners and the 9 & Dines are fun formats for all levels of play. You never know who you’ll meet. Our friendly regulars are always happy to direct you to whatever club activity interests you.

The Nifty-Niner Golf Group meets at 12:45 pm every Tuesday, year round. It is a great way to meet others and introduce yourself to our golf course if you are new to the community. We also re-connect with old friends. Because of the fun, scramble format, it provides a comfortable environment for both socializing and golfing. It is an afternoon to have fun, meet people, and play 9 holes of golf. You do not have to be a member of the club or an expert golfer. All residents and their guests are welcome. A signup sheet is posted on a clipboard in the Clubhouse Lobby until

noon on Mondays. If you have an email address but are not receiving our emails, please write it down after your name on the weekly golf signup sheet. A new signup sheet goes out every Tuesday afternoon for the following Tuesday’s play.

Dinner: Our group usually goes out to dinner at various restaurants at 5:30 pm. Please let us know if you plan to join us when we send out the weekly email. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get further acquainted with your fellow golfers and to experience the local restaurant scene. Former and present Niners, as well as non-golfing spouses, are welcome to join us.

New Players: Next time you play with us, ask for your special punch card . . . 10 rounds gets a complimentary 9 holes at The Monarch Golf Course.

Other Opportunities: See Club Pro Craig Misch [314-9000] for information about golf lessons as well as other amenities at The Monarch Golf Club. See or call Gene Sass [314-0102] for membership opportunities afforded to all Royal Highlands residents, seasonal r enter s, and even individuals from other local communities. Hit ‘em straight!
