It is with great excitement that I take on the role as President of your Society. The Society appears to be in great shape. Financially it is sound, increasing mem- bership base, and sales of works on the increase. The AGM was well attended and followed by a general meeting, some in- teresting points were raised so all looks good for a constructive year. My philosophy is to make the operation and management of the Society as open and transparent as possible. Members need to have trust in the committee with the decisions that are made to enhance the success of the Society. Members must feel welcome to attend committee meet- ing as an observer, if you have a griev- ance, constructive criticism or a bright idea this can be tabled for discussion by the committee. We also intend to reintro- duce BI- annual members meetings . My background knowledge of the Society is limited, I have a lot to learn about the RQAS history plus past achievements and failure’s. This will be an interesting jour- ney and one I am looking forward to. I have an excellent team of committee members both past and present to help me along the way. There has been ques- tionnaire done in the past to get the ex- pectations of the members as to the di- rection they would like to see the Society take, I will be looking at these and see if we need to update this information. We are still on the lookout for a Treas- urer, there will be an accounting package installed in our new computer which is user friendly and will make the task of bookkeeping simplified. If you feel you have the desire to serve in this role please come forward. ( the pay is unbelievable ) As stated earlier I am excited with the prospect of the organization and have the feeling we will have a good year. The fa- cilities you have are excellent and any im- provements can only enhance the Society, your Society. I look forward to meeting you personally as the year go on, I will en- deavour to wear my name badge so please come up to me and say hello. It is with great excitement that I take on the role as President of your Society. The Society appears to be in great shape. Financially it is sound, increasing mem-bership base, and sales of works on the increase. The AGM was well attended and followed by a general meeting, some in-teresting points were raised so all looks good for a constructive year.

My philosophy is to make the operation and management of the Society as open and transparent as possible. Members need to have trust in the committee with the decisions that are made to enhance the success of the Society. Members must feel welcome to attend committee meet-ing as an observer, if you have a griev-ance, constructive criticism or a bright idea this can be tabled for discussion by the committee. We also intend to reintro-duce BI- annual members meetings .

My background knowledge of the Society is limited, I have a lot to learn about the RQAS history plus past achievements and failure’s. This will be an interesting jour-ney and one I am looking forward to. I have an excellent team of committee members both past and present to help me along the way. There has been ques-tionnaire done in the past to get the ex-pectations of the members as to the di-rection they would like to see the Society take, I will be looking at these and see if we need to update this information.

We are still on the lookout for a Treas-urer, there will be an accounting package installed in our new computer which is

user friendly and will make the task of bookkeeping simplified. If you feel you have the desire to serve in this role please come forward. ( the pay is unbelievable )

As stated earlier I am excited with the prospect of the organization and have the feeling we will have a good year. The fa-cilities you have are excellent and any im-provements can only enhance the Society, your Society. I look forward to meeting you personally as the year go on, I will en-deavour to wear my name badge so please come up to me and say hello.

Happy Painting

CONGRATULATIONS Gold Coast Show

“Visual Arts” Winners

WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

The President and Committee would like to extend a real hearty welcome to all new members who have joined

our Society. May your brush never be left to dry

And DON’T FORGET THE INDUCTION COURSE Is10am. Upstairs in the ’Peter Abraham Gal-

lery on Change Over Days This will give you the information

that you will need to represent our gallery and be able to work your duty if you plan to hang

your paintings.

ART IN THE PARK THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

! ! ! CONDITIONS ! ! ! Unfortunately, although Art in the Park has been going for some ten

years or so, the Council by-laws are now being enforced..

(At the moment the parkland in front of the gallery is in turmoil due to the

refurbishing of the public toilets) HOWEVER

The Society HAS TO APPLY FOR A PERMIT to have the ‘Art in the Park’ Those using the park for showing

their work will not be able to show any price at all. Technically you can

display, not sell your work in the park Any transaction should be made in

the gallery. Also the Art in the Park banner can not be strung between the trees but will have to have it’s own free standing poles for this pur-

pose.

A MEMO FROM OUR GALLERY DIRECTOR

1/ —- Unframed canvases must be painted on all sides. 2/ --- All paintings must be securely strung for hanging. 3/ — All paintings must be labelled on the back with Artist name, Title, Medium, and Price, in case the tem-porary label comes off. 4/ — If you enter two paintings, make sure the correct label is placed on each painting. 5/ — Diptychs and Triptychs must be joined together as one and entered as one work. Failure to comply with these condi-tions will result in the work not being hung. Thank you for your cooperation,

Mignon

At the Members Meeting, (after the AGM), David Ladley pre-sented a genuine idea for members to join together with RQAS GC ,with a promotional advertisement in The Annual Queensland Homes Maga-zine. This proposal has been put on hold and will be investigated for next years publication. It is an idea with great merit and will be looked into for next year.

WHO STOLE IT ? ? The Australian / Korean

Exchange Exhibition Banner The banner was tied in place, high up between the entrance pillars at the front of the gallery, ready for the Aust / Korea Exhibitions. Who ever took it (there would have to be more than one) has gone to lots of trouble to steal it. Keep your eyes open for it. It was the same banner we used for their exhibition two years ago.

SOMETHING THE COMMITTEE MUST DO The Committee and members really appreciate all the effort that Val goes to so as members have a great spread at our ’Opening Day’ Presentations. The

food and the presentation of the food is fabulous. Val, you would be very hard to fault, and Marj who is Val’s off-sider, this goes for you as well.

We thank you both very much and wish we had many more such as you.

Why do I paint? In all truth I don’t really know, I have some ideas but they never seem the complete answer, so this is probably more about what I think about painting rather than why. Warhol said “artists are people who produce things that other people don’t need”. From this perspective I guess I therefore paint for myself and be-cause I can and because in some way I feel a need to – a drive to create. I don’t have to, that denies a free will, I could play golf or go fishing or any number of other things – but painting – it’s some-how different, totally absorbing, satisfy-ing, purposeful, addictive, in some ways almost a kind of worship. It has no rules that are written in con-crete; it shouldn’t or needn’t be compli-ant of other people’s acceptance or verification, yes, third party compli-ments are nice and can be positive affirmation but only you know whether your achieving what you want to achieve . It doesn’t have to be behold-ing to rhyme or reason unless you take it there, then it can be objective, subjec-

tive, symbolic, impressionistic in fact anything you feel inspired to go with, even calculated. The only boundaries are the ones you impose. It’s a freedom very few other pursuits come anyway near to offering. When you paint it’s a very personal experience, only you feel the thrill in-

side of getting something happen-ing between your mind, your hand and the support you’re working on. Feeling the satisfaction of your conception take form the way you envisioned it or experiencing the frustration and feeling of inade-

quacy when it just doesn’t happen. But it’s your experience; you’re learning path, if it isn’t, your being lazy and for-mulaic. Study the life of Rembrandt and how he went from fame and fortune to rejection and poverty for the sake of his own artistic integrity and satisfaction. The art world is full of superfluous the-osophical bullshit, a swamp of ideas and opinions and everyone is an ex-pert, but we’re only an expert on our own views which in turn are the prod-uct of what we’ve fed into our minds,

mostly from exterior sources. Be objec-tive, don’t let yourself get sucked into the chaos of too many directions and opinions, work out your own. Which brings me to the other word I want to use ‘fun’. If you take anything too seri-ously it can cease to be fun, your art should give you enjoyment, if it does-n’t, have a break, do something else for a while until the craving comes again. Relax with your art, turn the world off, make it a little like a meditation you’re trying to externalize into a painting. Jeeps! did I just write all that gibber-ish, it must be time to check into art rehab again, but then again perhaps that why I paint! When Michael asked me to contribute this he said include something about why I paint what I paint. That’s easier to explain, I’m just an admirer of some of natures’ best creative work. For a more reasoned explanation check out my March 2011 blog at www.sexyart.com.au.
