GRADE 12 HANDOUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION & DEADLINES

YEARBOOK INFORMATION FOR 2020 GRADS – PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY!

The information here is non-negotiable and all deadlines must be met – no exceptions.

Late submissions for anything will not be included.

Email all submissions to: [email protected]

Be sure to submit to the correct email address – several students last year sent their content to the wrong email address with a typo and were not included.

1) Grad Write-Ups and Baby Pictures are optional.

2) You only get a Grad Write-Up in the Yearbook if you have had a proper Grad Photo in a gown taken at

Artona.

3) If you do not get a proper Grad Photo with a gown, your Go-Card Picture will be used.

4) Grad Write-Ups and Baby Pictures for the Yearbook are due January 15th, 2020. No late submissions

will be included.

5) Grad Write-Ups can be a maximum of 400 characters including spaces, punctuation, letters, and

numbers (NOTE – that is 400 characters, NOT 400 words). Your Write-Up CANNOT have any

abbreviations, initials, slang, social media handles/websites, bullying, innuendos, or anything that is

inappropriate for a school publication. If you try to include anything that is not appropriate for a

school publication, you do not get to have a Grad Write-Up – it will simply not be included and you

will not have a chance to resubmit.

6) You have one submission – you cannot submit a Grad Write-Up and then change or resubmit it – this

causes too much chaos and unnecessary work for the Yearbook team.

7) Edit your Grad Write-Up and have several people proof-read it! It will be in print forever!

8) Baby Pictures must be submitted as a high-resolution jpeg. If you are scanning a picture, make sure

that you crop it and submit it in the proper orientation.

9) Submit your Grad Write-Up and Baby Picture TOGETHER IN THE SAME EMAIL. In the subject line,

include your full name.

10) Grad group shot will be taken at lunch on Tuesday, March 3rd at 12:50 pm in the Gallery. There will only

be one group shot taken this year – if you are not there, you will not be included.

11) PLEASE get your Grad Photo taken between December 18th-22nd, 2019 during the times set aside for

Handsworth Graduates. These dates are published in the school calendar. If you need retakes, this

must be done by Friday, January 31, 2020 and you will pay an additional sitting fee.

12) SHARE THIS INFO WITH ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!! Too many late submissions did not get included last

year.

13) There are 2 sections to the Grad section of the Yearbook – make sure you read this carefully so that

you know where you will be placed in the book. See over.

CAREERS CORNER

Careers 9 – All Grade 9 students – Take Our Kids to Work Day - Wednesday, November 6th, 2019 Launched in 1994 by The Learning Partnership, Take Our Kids to Work Day is the most recognized career exploration event in Canada. This year, Take Our Kids to Work Day will take place on Wednesday, November 6th. What is the program about?

Take Our Kids to Work Day is an experiential learning opportunity for Grade 9 students across Canada. Students spend the day at the workplace of a parent, relative, friend, or volunteer host. Through Take Our Kids to Work Day, students are able to witness the world of work firsthand, prompting early career planning, and enabling students to make informed decisions pertaining to their future goals and endeavours. All Grade 9 students will attend a mandatory Flex Time assembly on Wednesday October 16 to receive information about Take Our Kids to Work Day and details about Careers 9 this year. What if it is not possible to go to work with a parent? There are other ways for your child to participate: Ask a relative, neighbour or family friend to take your child to work. Ask a parent who is taking his or her child to work if your son or daughter can join them for

the day. Contact local businesses and ask if they are participating in Take Our Kids to Work day. How do I sign up? Simply fill out and sign the consent form distributed to Grade 9 students and return it to the Main Office by October 30, 2019. The school will excuse the student’s absence for November 6, 2019. Student assignment: Students were given an assignment to complete during their workplace visit. Students are to submit the assignment by Friday November 8, 2019 on the portal. If a student needs help accessing or uploading their assignment to the portal please see Ms. O’Connor in Room 213 or Room 217. Students not attending Take Your Kids to Work Day will receive an in-school assignment during their first class on Wednesday November 6, 2019. Students are to submit the assignment by Friday November 8, 2019 in the Main Office. Please note that it is essential that both students and parents receive information about health and safety prior to their workplace visit. Students also need to know their rights and responsibilities for jobs they may pursue in the future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Therese O’Connor at to’[email protected] ...continued on next page

The Handsworth dancers have been very hard at work over the past month rehearsing for their first

bi-annual performance of Hands Up of the season. This performance will take place at Centennial

Theatre, Tuesday, November 26 at 7:00pm.

This upcoming performance will showcase the creations of 35 student choreographers who will

have their dances performed by over 115 drama 8 students, plus 200 dancers from grades 9-12.

The evening will end with a much beloved finale showcasing all of our performers, all at once! 20%

of HSS’ student population will be performing on stage that night!

The Handsworth Dance Program is proud to present an evening of performances that are created

entirely by students. These creations are the culmination of a dance program that teaches the skills

of leadership, collaboration, choreography, technique, and artistry while building a strong fine arts

community at our school.

MUSIC NOTES

The Prelude concerts were a great success! Three nights of music at Highlands United in the village with Bands and Jazz Bands, String Orchestras, and the Handsworth Choir performing classical to contemporary works including Lugwig van Beethoven, Toto, Stevie Wonder, Shostakovich, and many others! Congratulations to all the performers! Thank you to all volunteers and to everyone for their donations at the door to offset the costs of the event! We had our Fall Bottle Drive on October 19th and in spite of some inclement weather there was an excellent turn out from the music student members! Thanks to the hard work and generosity of the students and parents the event raised over $3000 for the program to help pay for instrument and equipment purchases and repairs, busing costs and entry fees to local festivals, clinicians and performers coming to the school, etc. Great work team! Sweet Music is com ing Decem ber 11! It w ill be a fine evening of sweet sounds and delectable deserts. It takes a village to run this event but the villagers do not have to do too much. Music Parents please sign up for a task that you can manage or show off your baking skills and contribute to our bake sale!

The month of October was a good one for the Varsity Royals as they went into the heart of their AAA Western Conference schedule. The month opened with a lunch hour matinee against the Belmont Bulldogs from Victoria, where our Royals were able to kick extra points on special teams and provided the difference in a 21-18 victory. The Royals played a road game in South Delta against the #1 ranked Sun-Devils and gave them all they could handle on October 9th. The team then travelled to New Westminster for Friday Night Lights and played a thriller against the perennial powerhouse Hyacks with a game just 3-0 late into the third quarter. The hunt for the playoffs heated up the following week with a huge 29-26 come from behind victory over the Notre Dame Jugglers on home field, putting the Varsity Royals squarely in the playoff picture…Keep working hard Blue!

The Junior Varsity team played road games at South Delta in a hard fought game that saw them put twenty points up against the provincial power-house program. This was followed by an exhibition game out in the Fraser Valley, where the team travelled to play the Mission Roadrunners. While the score wasn’t in their favour, the trip was an opportunity to bond as a team. October also marked the final time the Handsworth Royals football program will play on Handsworth Field…a home for the program for over 50 years. We look forward to hearing about developments of the new school!

HIGHLIGHTS

November 8th :

Remembrance Day

Assemblies

STUDENT COUNCIL

October was jam packed with events for our Handsworth

community to enjoy. Near the end of October, student

council hosted ‘Halloweek’. The week began with an apple

bobbing competition, where apples were hung from strings

from our second floor, for students and teachers to catch

with their mouths eating as much of the apple as possible in

90 seconds. Tuesday in the gallery, there was a pumpkin pie

eating contest. On Wednesday with the help of student-led

teams, we organized our second annual Haunted House.

Handsworth students as well as elementary students from

Canyon Heights, Cleveland, and Highlands also came for a

scare. Thursday was costume day and all students and staff

were encouraged to dress up.

November events include Remembrance Day assemblies,

taking place in the large gym on November 8th. In addition,

student council will host club day. With over 25 clubs, we

hope to encourage and introduce our clubs to our grade 8

population. Clubs are a great way to make new friends, with

like interests, or to try something new, so take a risk and join

a club.

Finally, student council has been busy creating a “new school

build” information board, to inform students, teachers,

parents and guests, regarding our new school’s ongoing

construction process. During the planning and construction,

we are proud that students are being involved in contributing

ideas for our new school. The information board can be

found in the gallery, in the cafeteria, and is updated monthly.

Some headings on the new school board, include: General

Info, FAQs, Timeline, and Topics of discussion. You will also

find some computer generated photos of our new school on

the board. Make sure you check it out.
