    Introduction

A s cloud deployments evolve and fragment into anera of interconnected clouds, the changing role of

information technology (IT) as the architect and brokerof services is more critical than ever before. To harness

the hybrid cloud, IT organizations need the right toolsand technologies to make hybrid cloud strategies aflexible and efficient reality for their organizations.

About This Book Hybrid Cloud For Dummies, NetApp Special Edition, con-

sists of four short chapters that explore data challengesin the hybrid cloud model and innovative solutions tothose challenges.

Foolish Assumptions It’s been said that most assumptions have outlived

their uselessness, but I assume a few things nonethe-less! First, I assume that you know a little somethingabout cloud computing trends and models. As such, this book is written primarily for IT executives andmanagers such as Chief Information Officers (CIOs),Chief Technology Officers (CTOs), IT directors, andtechnical managers.

    Chapter 1

Moving to a Hybrid CloudBusiness Model

    In This Chapter

▶ Looking to the cloud for business solutions

▶ Getting past cloud adoption hurdles

▶ Transforming IT into a service broker

▶ Defining public, private, and hybrid clouds

T  his chapter explores some of the business challengesthat CIOs are addressing with cloud computing

models, some of the barriers to adoption, the evolvingrole of IT as a service broker, and the different cloudmodels.

Recognizing the Need Today, Chief Information Officers (CIOs) must addressa range of challenges to meet increasingly demandingbusiness and operational objectives, as businessesstrive to remain competitive and look for new marketopportunities. CIOs are looking to new IT service

delivery models like hybrid cloud (I explain the differ-ent cloud models later in this chapter) to do the

following:  ✓ Keep up with technology and innovation changes

while driving down the costs of relentless datagrowth and aligning capabilities across thecompany.

✓ Reduce overhead costs while growing the busi-

ness and attracting and retaining skilledemployees.

✓ Lower risk when deploying new mission-criticalapplications by ensuring that data is kept secureand business disruptions are minimized.

✓ Manage complexity across the data center.

✓ Improve IT responsiveness and increase servicelevels for business applications to meet rapidlyevolving business demands.

✓ Achieve regulatory compliance to avoid stiff pen-alties and maintain public trust and confidence.

A cloud-based IT delivery model can speed upapplication deployment and provide flexibleenvironments to accommodate the dynamicand unpredictable needs of organizations andcustomers.

Understanding the Inhibitors Why are CIOs looking to the cloud to help solve complex

business and technology challenges? The cloud promisesto create better operational efficiencies, speed applica-tion deployment, and provide the flexibility that you needto respond quickly to changing business requirements.

    11/36

However, when it comes to moving to a cloud model, many risks are perceived.

Deploying a cloud model can be very challenging. Atthe top of the list, keeping your data secure is a keyconcern. For example, can you protect your vital datafrom getting into the wrong hands, and also protect itfrom viruses? But security isn’t the only inhibitor todeploying to the cloud. Other inhibitors include thefollowing:

✓ Complexity: With the explosion of web services, mobile devices, and new technologies to reach morecustomers anywhere and across various channels, managing the complexity of your expanding datacenter environment across multiple clouds is a sig-nificant challenge. Selecting the right service offer-ings at the right service levels on different datamanagement frameworks across a blend of cloudresources can be a daunting task.

✓ IT agility: IT service delivery is about meeting theneeds of the business. As those needs change, ITmust adapt and respond quickly. For years, ITorganizations have been working toward deliver-

ing agility within the data center. And now, as thepublic cloud is folded into IT strategy, the abilityto move applications, workloads, and data amongcloud resources requires connections betweenthose resources — a cloud data fabric — toextend this agility to the cloud.

✓ Data control: Building your own virtualized data

centers and private cloud means that your organi-zation can retain control of its data. Extendingyour environment to the public cloud necessitatesgiving up some control of infrastructure and

    6

applications, but you can never give up the respon-sibility you have to control your business data.

Your hybrid cloud strategy must support the busi-ness and provide the right levels of data perfor-mance, cost, security, access, protection, andgovernance.

If a skills gap exists in your IT organization, you might be reluctant to move to the cloud.Selecting the right consulting services partnerto help you design, deploy, and manage yourcloud environment can help you address sucha gap.

Although choosing a cloud service provider tocomplement a set of IT services is indeed ameans to deliver a flexible, dynamic environ-

ment, it doesn’t necessarily mean ongoing flex-ibility among different cloud providers. Formany organizations, cloud provider lock-in canbe a significant hurdle to adopting a public cloudstrategy, but the right set of management toolscan help address this hurdle.

The Changing Role of IT In the past, CIOs have viewed their IT organizations asbuilders of services for the business. But CIOs are deal-ing with more complexity than ever before, and thiscomplexity is driving them to rethink the role of IT.

Today, CIOs are moving from being builders of apps and

operators of data centers to becoming brokers of infor-mation services to the business. They are embracing

new technologies and new service models that allowthem to deliver IT faster, cheaper, and smarter, and to

make their companies more competitive.  Enterprise IT organizations don’t want to build

and run data centers. Instead, they are trans-forming into brokers of services that span on-and off-premise resources with a cloud-firststrategy to manage data, not data centers.

The rapid transformation to service broker is evidencedby a September 2013 IDG Research survey that showsonly 43 percent of total organizational data resides inthe cloud today. But within 18 months, almost two-thirdsof all organizational data is expected to reside in thecloud (see Figure 1-1).

Differentiating Cloud Models Cloud computing models are broadly defined as public, private, and hybrid.

A public cloud is an on-demand IT service in which com-puting resources are delivered over the Internet by anexternal cloud service provider. These resources (suchas infrastructure, platform, and software) are shared bythe service provider’s various customers. The publiccloud includes hundreds of cloud service providers, aswell as hyperscale cloud providers such as AmazonWeb Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

A hyperscale cloud provider offers a distrib-uted computing environment that can scaleexponentially in terms of compute and

storage.A private cloud is one in which a single (or extended)enterprise provides on-demand IT services as an inter-nal resource pool that is shared within theorganization.

A hybrid  cloud leverages both public and private cloudmodels, and potentially traditional data center infrastruc-

ture, operations, and applications as well, to provide anenterprise with an efficient, customized solution to meetits particular business needs. Hybrid cloud requires sig-nificant integration and/or coordination among the orga-nization’s internal and external environments to properlyaddress data, process, management, and securityrequirements.

    Chapter 2

    Data Management in theHybrid Cloud

    In This Chapter

    ▶ Connecting cloud resources

    ▶ Dealing with data challenges

    ▶ Maintaining data stewardship

T  his chapter talks about the need for seamless cloudservices, the difficult nature of data, and the impor-

tance of managing and controlling your organization’sdata assets.

Addressing the Need for Seamless Cloud Services

The attraction of the cloud — infinite, flexible, andinexpensive compute and storage — is too great to

ignore. Inevitably, organizations are moving toward acloud strategy that consists of private, public (includ-ing hyperscale) cloud, or some hybrid combination ofthese cloud models.

    10

At the same time, organizations must be able to choosewhere their data resides while maintaining data steward-

ship with control over how their data is used. Organiza-tions need control and flexibility. Moving to the cloudtherefore requires the ability to seamlessly connectmultiple cloud resources that span public and privatecloud architectures. Managing these cloud resources iscritical for organizations.

Hyperscale cloud computing might seem like a

distant panacea, but the reality is that mostorganizations will soon be consuming IT fromall three cloud resources — private, public(including hyperscale), and hybrid — for theforeseeable future.

Acknowledging the Difficult Nature of DataBy its nature, data is persistent and stateful. Data must bestored continuously and made rapidly accessible to com-pute to support business applications and analytics —but it doesn’t move easily. In comparison, compute is

stateless and can be dialed up or completely turned off,as needed.

The distance between compute and data also createslatency, which lowers performance. Thus, for manyapplications, having the data close to the compute is

    11

important. Compute resources can be leveraged frommany sources in the cloud, but to effectively use these

resources, data must be moved close to compute. But data doesn’t like to be moved. Migrating data cantake days for anything but the smallest moves, andevery move risks data corruption. The most reliableand efficient way to move large amounts of data is stillvia a USB drive or tape. Sending data over a networktakes much more time and requires expensive network

bandwidth connections. And many cloud providerscharge for network usage, further increasing the costsof data movement.

Finally, data services that are common in the enter-prise, such as data protection, QoS (Quality of Service),deduplication, and cloning, frequently aren’t availableor easily managed across disparate cloud services. This limits the types of applications that can move tothese resources.

Most importantly, data has significant value —to both the organization and potential attackers.Data protection — the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data — is a constant challenge

    for all organizations.

Managing and Controlling DataData is the most complex, critical, and valuable elementof all the components in any data center. And for an ITservice broker, managing and controlling data across ahybrid cloud model isn’t easy.

Hybrid data center inhibitors include the following:

      ✓ Inconsistent data containers

      ✓ Inefficient transport

✓ Inability to address data governance

Although enterprise organizations are embracing ahybrid data center model that spans private and publiccloud resources, they still need to maintain control of

data governance, access, performance, availability, pro-tection, and security, while maintaining or improvingoperational efficiency.

FlexibilityAs a globally recognized, top-level research institute, the University of Bonn in Germany needed more flexibil-ity for its computing resources to serve more than30,000 students because of increasing computationally

intense research projects. In addition, it was looking foran IT environment that allowed faculty and doctoralcandidates to access their files on their own end-userdevices or from home. To accomplish this goal, theUniversity of Bonn adopted a private cloud environmentbased on high-performance Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers,NetApp storage systems, and virtualized PCs. Peter

Middelhauve, CIO of the Department of Economics, stated, “The private cloud environment from Fujitsu andNetApp gives us a high degree of flexibility. Whereas inthe past new hardware constantly had to be acquiredfor a special project, now we can use the same hard-ware for a variety of research projects.”
