INTRODUCTION
A VLF electromagnetic survey and a total field magnetic
survey were carried out for Placer Dome Inc. on Project 379,
Dunlop Township, Ontario, in February 1989.
The project consists of 17 contiguous, unpatented mining
claims, a list of which is appended to this report. The claim
group is located on and around the Spanish River in the south
east quadrant of Dunlop Township, Ontario. Access to the
property was made via motor vehicle and snow machine along
secondary roads off of highway 17.
The purpose of the surveys was to locate subsurface,
geo-electrical conductors and to outline geological structures
as revealed by the magnetics, which may prove conducive for
gold mineralization. Three conductive horizons were located.
The magnetics reveal distinct rock units, as well as a number
of isolated anomalies. Hydro transmission lines cross the
north edge of the property. Many stations in the direct
vicinity of the power lines were not able to be read.
The accompanying maps show the area surveyed and the
results obtained.
- 2 -
METHOD
The VLF survey was completed using Geonics EM-16
receivers. The transmitting station read was NLK located
near Seattle, Washington, transmitting at 24.8 kHz. The
inphase and quadrature values were posted and profiled (Maps
89-82-A, B). The inphase data was "fraser filtered" and
these values were posted and contoured (Maps 89-84-A, B).
The magnetic survey was completed using Gem Systems
GSM-18 Magnetometers. The diurnal was corrected using a base
station with readings taken at 3 second intervals. The data
was posted (Maps 89-81-A, B) and contoured (Maps 89-83-A, B).
All contouring was completed by Geosearch Consultants using
the Geosoft software package.
RESULTS
The VLF survey located three conductive horizons. There
is a one line conductor located on L 7+OOW, 2+84S, A second
anomaly is located from L 4+OOW, 2+42S to L 2+OOW, 2+58S. This
conductor is coincident with a local magnetic anomaly centred on
L 3+OOW, 2+75S.
The third anomaly located is a broad feature better
outlined by the fraser filtered map. It extends from L 14+OOE,
- 3 -
3 + 50S to L 22+OOE, 3+75S. This is located at the southern
edge of the detailed section of the grid. A cliff edge
parallels this feature and may be its cause. It would be
better defined if the lines were extended further south to
properly cover the anomaly.
The transmission line which crosses the northern edge of
this grid created much interference. Readings were attempted
at each station, however, no valid readings were obtainable.
The magnetic survey reveals an area with very flat magnetic
relief with a background of 58,200 gammas. Most of the anomalies
are 200 to 300 gammas above the level.
The centre of the grid has a background of 58,300 gammas.
This higher background suggests it is a separate rock unit.
The western edge of this separate unit extends from L 4+OOW,
10+OOS to L 4+OOE, 4 + OOS to L 2+OOE, 0*00. The eastern edge
extends from L 5+OOE, 0+00 to L 9+50E, 5+OOS. Few features
are noted within this area.
The area to the west of this contains a number of isolated
magnetic anomalies. Examples are located on L 5+OOW, 5+62S
and L 3+OOW, 2+75S. This latter anomaly is associated with a
VLF conductor.
l
- 4 -
East of the centre rock unit the line spacing was
reduced from 100 metres to 50 metres. A number of localized
anomalies are visible. The most obvious feature is a north
west trending, narrow, linear anomaly extending from L 14+OOE,
0+62S to L 17+50E, 1+37N.
An anomaly exists on the southern edge of Tie Line 4+OOS
at approximately 17+OOE. There is not enough data to properly
define the anomaly. It is coincident with the poorly defined
VLF anomaly noted previously.
A number of readings beneath the transmission lines were
not obtainable by the magnetometer.
RECOMMENDATIONS
A drill test of the VLF conductor on L 3+OOW, 2+75S is
recommended. The broad conductor around Tie Line 4+OOS is
coincident with the cliff. The geology should dictate the
need for drill testing, or the need to acquire more ground.
The geophysics was of no use beneath the transmission lines,
as was expected.
Respectfully submitted,
