Board of Education

Supt. Klooster

At the July 2010 Board Retreat, the Stark 100 School Board established directives for the administration aimed at impacting the culture of drug and alcohol use in our community and among some of our students.

The first directive was to develop a formal drug and alcohol prevention/intervention program.

At the March 2011 Regular School Board meeting, Guidance Counselor Liz Kellington provided a progress report on that program’s status.

Mrs. Kellington reported that a committee made up of admininstrators, teachers, a school nurse and a board member had met with the Outreach Coordinator, Anne Howerton, from the Hult Health Education Center in Peoria. Ms. Howerton provided the committee with information about a number of educational programs available for delivery to Stark County students. The committee was particularly interested in programs addressing prescription drug use and presentations related to alcohol and other drug use. Plans are in place to schedule programs for both the high school and junior high school students.

Additionally, Mrs. Kellington has contacted Melissa Sage-Bollenbach

from Bradley University. Bradley has an extracurricular group called HEAT (Help, Empower and Teach) that would be available for substance abuse presentations at the junior high.

Mrs. Kellington has also been in touch with Dave Fahrenkamp, founder of the Save A Life Campaign. Dave lost his son to drunk driving and now, along with his wife and daughter, have created a campaign to promote that “tough choices, made at the right times, save lives.” Mr. Fahrenkamp is available for presentations and assemblies.

Finally, the committee plans to meet with education representatives from the Tazewell County Health Department. Tazewell County has a safety campaign in place that resulted from a series of teen deaths in their county. Our committee wants to discuss details regarding how Tazewell put their program in place and what our committee can do to help create a similar, successful program in Stark

County. In addition to these initiatives, the

Board of Education:a) heard a report Monday night from

Pam Ziegler on the results of the 2010 Illinois Youth Survey for Stark County

b) has directed the administration to investigate the possibility of accessing grant monies to help provide for a police liaison officer and

c) will hear recommendations next month regarding possibly increasing the student random drug testing pool at the high school.

The board understands that in order for a program to be successful, the district will have to provide components that include education, prevention, intervention and enforcement.

National Honor Society On Friday, April 1, the Spoon River

Chapter of the National Honor Society will induct 14 new members. Members are selected on the basis of their scholarship, character, leadership and service.

The induction ceremony will be held on April 1, at St. Dominic’s Parish Hall in Wyoming. The following students will be inducted:

Brittany Bussen, Melissa Cobb, Katelyn Code, Hannah Daum, Taylor Endress, Sumer Gill , Elizabeth Heaton, Dakota Leonard, Kasey Main, Hannah Morrissey, Jacob Rumbold, Jeffrey Ryan, Kari Shafer and Dalton Wisnefski.

Current NHS members are Cara Cobb, Sarah Fabry, Nicole Fritch, Kaelee Gray, Marissa Gray, Zach Leezer, Tyler Morrissey, Jaime Pheiffer, Brittney Price, Taylor Wallace, Taylor Wilkinson and Jasmine Wyant. They will lead the induction ceremony.

Drug and Alcohol Education and Intervention Program

Once again, thank you for your help and your support with all of our programs. The Drug and Alcohol Education and Intervention committee will meet again on March 29 to continue planning for the 2011-2012 school year.

Jerry Klooster, Superintendent

One day there were two boys sitting on the porch.

They decided to go to the ocean. They met a clam, a starfi sh, a whale, a

yelled and yelled until she heard some of them yell back. It was her little

attacking them. They were yelling, “Mommy! Mommy!” “Are you alright?” asked mom. “Yeah. We are alright,” said the little

boys. “Let’s go home.”

Nolan Elsasser Wins District FFA Award

Stark County Unit District 100 Supt. Jerry Klooster announces that Nolan Elsasser, 12535 South Valley Road Princeville, a member of the Stark County FFA Chapter of the Illinois Association FFA, was selected as District 1 FFA Award Winner in Grain Production Entrepreneurship held Wednesday, March 16, at Geneseo High School. Nolan is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Elsasser from Princeville. Nolan was selected in competition with 4 FFA members from District 1.

District 1 is comprised of five agriculture education sections in northwestern Illinois including nearly 60 schools and 2,000 agriculture education students.

Winning the District 1 FFA Grain Production Award makes Nolan eligible to Compete in the State FFA Awards Contest at Urbana on April 2, 2011. Steps to this award include Nolan winning the Chapter and Sectional FFA Grain Production Award for his corn supervised agriculture experience program. Other agriculture education and FFA honors won by Nolan include serving as the Stark County FFA Chapter Reporter and participating on career development event teams such as Land Use, Agriculture Mechanics, and Dairy Cattle Evaluation. Scott Fairfield is agriculture education and FFA Advisor at Stark County High School.

JACKEt WinnEr Blaze Porter of the Stark County FFA Chapter was selected to receive a free FFA jacket through a program sponsored by the Syngenta corporation and Burroughs Ag Service.

FFA Blue Jacket Awarded to Local YouthBurroughs Ag Service together with Syngenta participated in a program

through the National FFA Foundation for an opportunity to have an FFA jacket awarded to Blaze Porter a member of Stark County High School chapter.

Syngenta made a generous proposition to its retail partners in the Midwest: Contribute $2,500 to the National FFA Foundation, and we’ll match it. In recognition of the retailers’ contribution, a local FFA chapter that has been designated will receive an official FFA blue jacket and a $500 check for the chapter.

Russ Klemme, District Sales Manager for Syngenta in Minnesota said, “The Blue Jacket Program created a lot of excitement and exceeded our expectations.” The retailers who participated in the program are true ambassadors of agriculture.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 506,199 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. They’re part of 7,429 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988 in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

The National FFA Organization operates under a Federal Charter granted by the 81st United States Congress, and it is an integral part of public instruction in agriculture. The U.S. Department of Education provides leadership and helps set direction for FFA as a service to state and local agricultural education programs. Visit www.ffa.org for more information.

Elementary Library Explores Dr. Seuss BooksThe Stark County Elementary School library has been very busy! After

our return from Christmas break, the 1st grades began a three-month exploration of the books of the great Dr. Seuss.

In January we read Hooray for Diffendoofer Day. When Dr. Seuss died in 1991, his secretary turned over the rough draft he had started on Hooray for Diffendoofer Day to his publisher. His publisher enlisted the help of children’s poet, Jack Prelusky, to polish up the writing on the book, and illustrator Lane Smith, was able to incorporate some of Dr. Seuss’s rough drawings into the book.

This book is about a school unlike any we have ever seen. The teachers and staff at Diffendoofer School have silly names and teach some funny subjects. Miss Wobble teaches smelling. Miss Fribble teaches laughing. Miss Vining teaches all the ways a pigeon can be peppered and how to put a saddle on a lizard or a leopard. After reading the book, students were able to come up with their own Diffendoofer teacher and the funny subject he/she might teach. Then they drew a picture of the teacher in his/her classroom.

In February, we read And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street. Published in 1937, it was the first book Dr. Seuss ever had published. The story is about a little boy who sees a horse and cart on his way home from school. He thinks of more exciting things to tell his father and, using his imagination, he turns the horse and cart into things like a zebra pulling a chariot and an elephant pulling a great brass band. By the end of the story, he has an outlandish tale that resembles a full parade going down Mulberry Street. After reading the story, we discussed how to turn a small truth into a large, outlandish tale. Since our school is located on Van Buren Street, students were able to write their own short story using something they might actually see on the way to school, such as a bus or a stop sign, and turn it into their own outlandish tale. We titled them And to Think That I Saw it on Van Buren Street.

In March, we finished up our exploration of Dr. Seuss books with the celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The first week in March was our celebration of his birthday. Dr. Seuss’s birth date is March 2, 1904. Can you guess how old he would be if he were still alive today? Older students were encouraged to do the math and figure it out for a prize!!

Every student in the school was given a silly band in the shape of a Dr. Seuss character. The K-3rd grades read The Cat in the Hat which is probably Dr. Seuss’s most famous book. Mrs. Kelly wore her Cat in the Hat hat while she read the story. The activities that students did included making your own Cat in the Hat hat. Other Dr. Seuss works we read during the month of March were: The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, Green Eggs and Ham, and Horton Hatches The Egg. After reading Horton Hatches the Egg, each student was given his own chocolate egg. We suspect more students ate their egg than tried to take good care of it like Horton did for his egg.

The first grades had a three-month long lead up to Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and the whole school has enjoyed celebrating his birthday in the month of March. Now the library will get in gear for the month of April as we celebrate Children’s Library Month.

Second grader Marissa Dupoy explains to her fellow classmates the art of Beekeeping. Marissa and her family, are beekeepers. Marissa also brought a honey snack to school to share with her classmates. All of the SCES second graders spent a week learning about bees and their importance to nature and to us.

Many students at Stark County High School carried on the tradition of wearing green clothing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. Pictured are several high school students, along with Mrs. Deusinger, librarian, and Mrs. Clifford, library aide.

Yo u n g r e a d e r s at Stark County E l e m e n t a r y School explored the wonderful and zany world of Dr. Seuss during the first three months of 011. Included was the last Dr. Seuss book – published after his death. It was a book about school and covered such subjects as “ l a u g h i n g ” a n d “smelling.”

Lauren and Olivia with a couple of favorites. Emma Kraft celebrated the

doctor’s birthday on March .

Kalleigh Keane from Mrs. Gilles’ class and Mrs. Kelly enjoyed the Book Fair.

The Super Stepper Program at Stark County Elementary School is part of a strategic plan developed by the Health & Wellness Committee. Third through fifth grade students and many staff wear step counters daily and record number of steps per month. Each month, a top student super stepper, a top staff super stepper and a top class super stepper award is given. The goal is to get active, keep moving and be fit. February’s top Super Stepper Class was a repeat winner – Mrs. West’s 3rd Grade. Wow!! The top student Super Stepper was Kaylynn Steelman from Mrs. Reid’s th Grade. Mrs. Carol Rice was the top Staff Stepper.Mrs. Rice

HONOR ROLL3rd Quarter – 2010-2011

Dear Agricultural Supporters:Stacey Fairfield lost a battle with leukemia in November of 2006.

The family wished to honor his passion for agriculture by establishing a scholarship to assist young people wishing to study toward a future in some area of the agriculture industry. Through the donations of generous area individuals and businesses, the Stacey Fairfield Memorial Scholarship was established in the spring of 2007 to award an annual $500 scholarship to an area student pursuing a career in agriculture. Past winners of the scholarship have been Addison Ryan, Jeremy Shaner, Nicholas George and Jon Heaton.

The 2011 recipient of the Stacey Fairfield Memorial Scholarship is Kevin Baumann. Kevin is a senior at Stark County High School and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Baumann of Wyoming. Kevin has been very active in the Stark County FFA Chapter, serving as a chapter officer and as a member of several career development event teams. Kevin has won the Section FFA Dairy Production Entrepreneurship Award for three consecutive years.

At the 2011 Stark County FFA Awards Banquet, the membership decided to donate all funds received in the labor auction to the Stacey Fairfield Memorial Scholarship Fund. Once again, through the efforts of generous individuals and businesses, nearly three thousand dollars was raised to assist in future scholarships.

On behalf of the members of the Stark County FFA Chapter, I thank you for your past and present support of our area agricultural youth.

Sincerely, Scott FairfieldAgriculture Educator, FFA AdvisorStark County High School

Annual Grant Planning Meeting • Wednesday, April 13Many of the great programs that

Stark County CUSD #100 offers to its students are provided through funds from the federal and state governments. The district’s goal is to provide the highest quality services to our students with the allotment that we are given. So, planning for these programs is extremely important. And, planning is most effective when it involves all stakeholders.

On Wednesday, April 13, there will be a federal and state program planning meeting at Wyoming Elementary School at 3:15 P.M. in the elementary library. Discussion will include evaluation and planning for the following programs:Early Childhood Block Grant

Stark County uses these funds to provide a Pre-Kindergarten program that supports ear ly childhood education. The program

emphasizes the relationship among early childhood education, parenting education and involvement, and future success in school.Title I

The district uses these funds to ensure that all students, particularly those at-risk for academic failure in reading and math, meet academic achievement standards.Title IIA

In 2010-2011, Stark County used

these funds to provide an additional teacher in third grade to reduce class size at this important age. Title II D`

The district targets these funds to improving student academic achievement through the use of technology.

Teachers, parents, and interested community members are encouraged to attend.
