RampR System Transformation A Benefit for Communities

Did you know that your local child care resource and referral program (RampR) is part of a network of child care resource and referral programs around the state There are currently 18 local RampRs that belong to the Washington State Child Care Resource amp Referral Network (RampR Network) Here are just a few of the ways in which our community benefits by being a part of this wider network We are a stronger voice for child care when we speak together We learn from each other about programs and approaches that work (as well as the ones that dont work) We have a presence in statewide policy discussions that would be impossible for us to sustain individually We benefit from funding and other resources that the RampR Network provides We have a place to go to get ideas to problem-solve and to brag about our successes Over the past two years we have participated in Network discussions about who we are as a system of local RampR programs Weve

studied how much it costs to deliver resource and referral services statewide Weve

looked at the geography of our state and how and where people go to access those services Weve brainstormed ideas about

additional services and new ways of delivering them Throughout these conversations we have remained focused on our primary goals which are to Deliver quality comparable services to families providers and communities statewide Be responsive to exciting new opportunities in the early learning field and Use our resources effectively and wisely In the end we determined that the best

decision would be to reduce the number of individual RampR programs from 18 to 11 That will allow the RampR systems resources

to be distributed more evenly and more flexibly across the state In some cases telephone services will be performed regionally which will consolidate staffing and potentially increase the hours the service is available Services for providers and community partnership work will remain local although they may be administered from a different office You can view the current and new RampR service delivery maps at wwwchildcarenetorg Beginning in January 2008 a competitive bidding process will take place statewide to determine which agencies will be selected to contract for RampR services as of July 1 2008 Many of the current agencies offering resource and referral services will choose

to bid The bidding process will provide an opportunity for agencies to take stock of what they have been doing to think about what works and to propose new more effective strategies and services The RampR Network Board of Trustees in partnership with the Department of Early Learning will make the final selection of the 11 agencies

The WAEYC conference was located in Yakima WA this year As always the conference was a great opportunity to distribute scholarship applications and brochures receive updates on developments within the child care field and connect with others The conference allows us an opportunity to meet pro-gram scholars in person This year we had the opportunity to take two schol-ars from Port Haddock and one from Grandview out to dinner to get to know them a bit better Its truly a pleasure to be able to meet our scholars and put

Provider Survey Results Thank you to all who completed our survey We had 43 surveys returned the highest number ever Some highlights of the results include The most requested time for STARS seminars was Saturday mornings

Building Bridges Report

We are very excited to report that the Building Bridge program has been a great success in Walla Walla This fall there were 3 different Building Bridges courses happening Marcie Anderson taught the 3rd Module of the Child Family amp Community Relationships class at WWCC in English Six students from Clarkston joined this class by ITV Comments from providers included The grant was awesome no out-of-pocket expense The teacher was awesome The best part was learning different techniques to resolve issues Esteban Florian taught the two classes one Saturday mornings and one Saturday afternoons Both classes were the 3rd Module of the Child Family amp Community

GUIDING THE BEHAVIOR OF YOUNG CHILDREN

Module 1 Module 2 and Module 3

This course is designed to introduce students to strategies that are developmentally ap-propriate for guiding children in an early childhood environment The strategies in-clude techniques for guiding childrens behavior strengthening relationship-focused care and understanding cultural relevance Students also learn to individualize to meet the needs of children Using research theory and practice students develop action plans for classroom management indirect and direct guidance strategies communi-cation skills for promoting positive behaviors and intervention techniques for mistaken behaviors

Building Bridges courses are open to all child care providers working in a licensed home or center WWCC amp the Department of Early Learning offer the following benefits

10 STARS training hours per module

Dear Provider Children love consistency in their lives which reflects balance and rou-tines When children can predict daily events they feel safe and secure and the predictability adds to their overall development and ability to learn Equally important to maintaining consistency in childrens lives is the abil-

ity to help them handle changes that may occur Even the slightest change in a childs routine can cause stress and ulti-

mately result in crying or tantrums Every child needs a basic foundation of security and consistency which will help them become flexible and han-dle changes You can help parents understand the importance of routine and how to help children when changes occur No matter the age of the child change is never easy However with support and open communication between parents and their children transitions that may need to occur will happen with a little more ease On the reverse side of this letter is an article on Routines for parents

Routines A routine is doing something in the same way every day Routines are im-portant because they teach a child what to expect This can help the child feel calm and happy Knowing what is coming next also allows him to feel safe and ready to learn There is no right way to make a routine Just do what is good for you and your child Start with everyday activities Create routines around the things you do each day like meals baths or bedtime Routines teach your child how to act during these daily activities Be consistent Do the same things in the same way This lets your child know what is coming next and helps him feel secure For example each time you put your child to sleep you might
