Let us have Goal … “IEI - Integration

of all Engineering is the Way of life”

Dear Fellow Engineers,

Once again I am extremely happy to

share my thoughts with all of you. When

I thought what is next after becoming

active members of IEI, developed a

habit of attending IEI programs once in a month. Sustaining

for another 100 years and more, we have to make IEI is an

integral part of Engineers' life, where attractions, distrac-

tions, choices of more today for any individual . And hence,

I would like to have a goal of “IEI - Integration of All

Engineering - is the Way of Life”, and I believe this goal

will take every engineer towards all round growth.

Integration of everything is happening, the boundaries

between engineering disciplines are becoming invisible,

and I am able to foresee that every Engineer needs IEI - An

integrating all Engineering platform, as per his / her needs.

And hence in this Upcoming Centenary Year, Let us have

Ambitious Goal… that is making IEI- Integration of all

Engineering is the Way of life for “All round inclusive

growth” for every human being in the World.

I call upon all Corporate Members of IEI, all Office bearer

of IEI State and Local Centres, past and present, future

aspiring members, to set “IEI is the way of Life” as their

Goals, on the Centenary year.

I am longing with love to meet all of you once again on

13th September at Kalaivanar Arangam, on this Great

Momentous, once in a life time occasion.

Talk on “Looking inside the Metal”

A technical guest lecture meeting was held on 28th June 2019 at 6.00 pm in IE(I),

Tamilnadu State Centre auditorium. The topic of the day was “Looking inside the

Metal”. Er R Ramdoss, FIE, Chairman, IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre welcomed

the gathering. Er C Renganathan, CEO, Chennai Metco Pvt Ltd., Chennai was

the chief guest for the day.

He started his speech, the greatest invention of man begun out of his curiosity and

Metallurgy doesn't find an exception to this.

Have we all wondered how technology advancement has metallised our

environment? Ranging from simple household needs to industrial application, metals

plays a significant role.

But how did all this begin?

Early civilisation of mankind used different kinds of stone as tool. As centuries roll

by, man with his experience started advancing in use of metals. Wonders have been

created which will forever remain in the history of mankind. To quote some, we

have Qutub Minar iron pillar, Great sword of Tipu sultan and enchanting Natarajan

Statue.

Every great discovery has a hero behind it. A man, out of his curiosity started

examining different meteorite sample that fell on earth using a microscope. He for

his lifetime was surprised to see metals inside them. This fascination led to

emergence of NEW SCIENCE OF METALLOGRAPHY. THE STUDY OF MICRO

STRUCTURE OF METALS. He is Henry Clifton Sorby, father of microscopical

petrography.

There are many ways to look inside a metal. It includes X ray, ultrasonic testing

methods but most dominant method is metallography analysis. It is a unique method

in assessing the quality of metals.

METALLOGRAPHY comprises the following steps

• Sectioning

• Mounting

• Grinding

• Polishing

• Etching

• Microscopic analysis

Area of interest has to be sectioned from sample using an appropriate cutting wheel

with adequate amount of coolant. It has to be further mounted using a mounting

polymer. Prepared mould need to be ground and polished using wide range of

consumables to obtain a mirror finished surface. This will be chemically etched

to reveal the microstructure of the metal.

Microstructure of metal is similar to Palmistry. Physical properties of metal can

be well studied using microstructure. A material with same chemistry but having

different microstructures performs differently. A well-known example of it is SG

iron and cast iron. Owing to this, microstructure study have been used in all fields.

Since metals have encompassed our life, precisely controlling/selecting property of

metals for different applications in turn has an effect on human life.

Microstructure can also be used a tool for failure analysis. Proper examination of

metal under micro/macroscopy will reveal data which will help us to analyse the

failure.

We Indian have been progressing in this field and constantly leaving our footprints

in global arena. Definitely we will see a better future coming up for humankind

and metallography will be a part of it.

Talk on “The best approaches to Project Management . The need for Competence &

Skill Development for Engineers”

A technical guest lecture meeting was held on 25th June 2019 at 6.00 pm in IE(I),

Tamilnadu State Centre auditorium. The topic of the day was “The best approaches

to Project Management. The need for Competence & Skill Development for

Engineers”. Er R Ramdoss, FIE, Chairman, IE(I), Tamilnadu State Centre

welcomed the gathering. Mr T Srinivasan, Regional Director (South), Project

Management Associates, Chennai was the chief guest for the day.

He explained about the Projects are for having a better tomorrow. Any growth and

development can be accomplished only by Projects. Therefore Project Management

is the key for any development or growth. But the art and science of Project

Management is learnt the hard way by the project professionals. By sheer

experience, the technical experts learn Project Management. Even the basic

differentiating factors between Projects, Programs and Portfolios may not be clear

to many. In fact at times, Operations and Project which are totally different are

understood to be the same Therefore there is a need for the Technical experts to

develop their competences in the area of Project Management.

IPMA, International Project Management Association, followed in 70 + countries

have come out with a well laid out methodology to develop and assess the various

competence elements of a Project Manager. IPMA has identifies 29 Competence

elements, grouped under Perspective, People and Practice Competences as the basis

for all PM professionals. Some of the useful areas covered include Breaking the

Project in to elements, Planning and scheduling, Resource Time, cost Management,

Risk Management, Procurement & Contracts, Conflicts Resolution, Team

management, Ethics and Values etc.

IPMA believes that Knowledge is not sufficient to develop the required skills. One

should know how to apply the knowledge in the actual area of work. This

application or Competence Development is the basis of IPMA Certifications.

It has 4 levels of Certification, Level D, C, B & A. This provides a career path

for project professionals. Unlike other Project Management Certifications which

are more generic, IPMA Programs, especially Level C, B and A gets mapped to

the actual work done by the individuals and organisations. IPMA Programs are rated

much higher than any other program in terms of the contents as well as the

assessment methodologies, by independent organisations. IPMA would build a world

where all Projects succeed. Let's be a part of it.
