Looking for instant

A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E???

Opt for the ultimate in

fashion accessories, a

“killer” pair of sunglasses!

For the fashionistas out

there, sunglasses offer

an equal, if not larger,

amount of pizzazz to

that crazy hot bag, those

statement shoes, beat new

hair or even that great

new motor vehicle!

— a Hot Look at Sunglasses This SeasonAccessorize your Eyes with Reflective Syle

For both men and women, no outfi t is complete without a pair of classic aviators or “Nichole Ritchie inspired,” oversized.

Talk about immediate makeover! Not only will they protect your eyes from the sun and prevent wrinkles caused by squinting, they make a personal statement about your style and can offer a level of confi dence!! Also, for your consideration, mirrored or dark lenses can be your saving grace from a heavy night, when you need the downtime, or just feel antisocial.

Buying trends are turning more towards accessories and an increasing demand for sunglasses make this accessory too important to ignore! Choose a pair that says a lot about your personality and your mood. With selections running the gamut, selecting a pair that best suits your facial shape is no longer an issue. Sporty wraparounds and glamorous cat-eyes offer sleek futuristic styles that hug the face, and small retro-looking shapes often offer embellished and bejeweled looks.

— a Hot Look at Sunglasses This Season

Buying sunglasses can be a challenge, whether you are buying them up close and personal or online. Consider the shape of your face when shopping your look. Face Shapes and Appropriate Frames:Round: Bold, square or angular frame Oval:Almost any frame Square: Oval or round frame Oblong: Angular, geometric or fl at top Heart: Oval, round or aviator

Retros modify the Jackie-O style with frames that are bolder, may be solid or translucent in color, and arms with metaldesigns, cutouts, or logos. The ever-so-old school style of the Ray-ban Wayfarer is not quite ready to die out. With major fashion infl uencers still wearing theirs, the vintage Ray-ban trend will continue on. The classic black, bright colored frames are still in the picture, as well as the introduction of Wayfarers with duel-colored frames. Lastly, since 1937, this ever so hot and very classic style of course needs no introduction...the Aviator. Oversized Aviators are also a hit with women as well. This signature statement is a defi nite must in your sunglass collection! The style and color of your sunglasses certainly depends on your personal style and preference. Many sunglass afi cionados, however, opt for the bolder styles, colors and details due to only wearing them outdoors, as opposed to the eyeglasses worn all day. Translation: Have fun with your shades! By having several fresh, new pairs of sunglasses, you can coordinate with your outfi t favs, while matching your mood!

During your quest for the perfect pair, keep in mind that the frame should fi t comfortably on your face. Never fear however, if it’s not quite right, it can often be adjusted. Metal frames can be bent slightly, and screws can be tightened. Your plastics can be heated and formed for a better fi t. Summer is just around the corner, so grab the sunscreen, put the top down and sport your super hot new shades! You deserve it!

To protect consumers, there’s Truth in Lending and Truth in Advertising, maybe there should be governing principles for Truth in Dating. We are living in a “me” society, where it is standard for our given word to be less than binding. With our “we” thinking compromised, we have no choice but to cautiously enter new relationships skeptical to trust. In sharp contrast, loyalty on the playground was innocently pledged when two friends linked their smallest fi ngers. The pinky promise, or pinky swear, gave us every assurance for

truth

Forget the channel that learns and the girl group with Left-Eye… consider a different TLC: the role Truth, Lies and Commitment play in todayʼs dating world.

By: Amanda Morrison

If I sound passionate about the subject, it directly stems from grappling with yet another failed relationship. Despite its obvious dysfunction and waving fl ags of red, I ignored the warnings for a chance at love. Now, thrust back into the singles scene, I have newfound clarity for how character fundamentals can make couples equally yoked or a hot scrambled mess. So before we can plate up to breakfast, let’s examine our principles in the frying pan of dating.

complete faith. In the dating version of red rover, with emotions at risk, shouldn’t our word mean more as adults? Instead of the pinky promise, do we need to secure our fi ngers to a polygraph? Innocent until proven guilty only works in the courts. Our dating philosophy of liar until proven honest rightly forces potential mates to prove true in word and deed before we’re offi cially impressed. Accepting the challenge for honesty and kindness, let’s enjoy the liberation of simply telling the truth. After all, a promise should be a place of trust and not just where the stars go for rehab.

Don’t say you’ll call me if you won’t, don’t tell me you love me if you don’t, and by all means, don’t say“I do” when you mean “I don’t”—simple as a country song, let’s make it our new dating mantra! To option truthfulness, fi rst we must consider why it’s so hard to be equitable with our words. Painfully aware that some people are void of conscience, I am confi dent the majority of our single population genuinely desires to do the right thing. Apart from the reprehensive agenda-pushing liars, more common are those of us with virtuous intentions that white lie ourselves into dating dilemmas. In an effort to protect each other’s feelings or safeguard our own image, we are compelled to skirt the truth- especially when relationships are casual and label free. To maximize our options, we become formal designers of faux-truth. Maybe since we’ve been lied to in the past, we feel justifi ed to redesign the facts. Damaged by neglected promises, unfortunately we’ve lost faith in the whole dating process. Pessimistic for human behavior, our standards are lowered and dishonesty feels like a deserved rite of passage.

in the summer

Infallibly, the only way to gauge deceit is allowing trust to build over time. If you fi nd you are with one consistent to mislead, trust your instincts. Sometimes the most dangerous lies are the ones we tell ourselves.

It seems fi tting to recognize that no relationship, friendly or romantic, can stand the test of time without commitment. Pulled in a million directions, sometimes it’s hard to commit to our laundry much less another person. Innocently, societal pressures can force us to over-promise and under-deliver. But for those challenged with sincerity, do us all a favor and don’t commit. Once you’ve ordered it, you’re not at Burger King anymore- you can’t have it your way. However, if you’re ready and you fi nd yourself in a balanced, mutually- enhancing relationship then don’t be afraid to make it mutually- exclusive. A committed relationship is a refreshing departure from our narcissistic culture. Ironically, the confi dence that comes from a loving commitment avails us to love ourselves even more. … Most would agree that our greatest hope as singles is to experience a healthy relationship, where compromise is overshadowed by riveting love, complementing our lives in every way. Regrettably, when considering our values as a society, it’s no wonder we’re apprehensive about dating. Nevertheless, life’s too short to let bitterness take control, threatening our odds for fun. Sure, there are risks that come from letting people in, but without experiencing heartache, can we ever really appreciate love? Stronger and wiser, our broken relationships don’t defi ne us, but our character certainly does. With childlike faith, let’s renew our commitment to date with integrity, reject the lies on our hearts from lovers past and acknowledge the truth that, while lonely at times, being single is fi lled with the optimism that everyday holds the chance to bring us the one to give us tender, loving, care.

As a friend, you honor the request to bring wine to a dinner party. As a professional, you entertain with fine dining to close the deal. As an individual, you relax with your house favorite, but wish to try something new. Whatever your reasons for chasing the grape, smash your fears of selection by sampling a local wine tasting. Sponsored by the winemakers themselves, local representatives offer amateur “newbies” and veteran enthusiasts the opportunity to sample freely and discover preferences. “Making customers feel comfortable and giving personalized service,” is why Kathy at Peppertree Steaks N’ Wines offers frequent tastings with a neighborly feel.

This service is necessary, especially if the vast display finds you optioning a beer run. Do you base your choice on price, recommendation, or go for the brand with the catchy logo? The truth is, making your selection can be a daunting task, so what better way to enjoy the educational experience than socializing with experts and friends. Raise a glass and toast to learning about one of nature’s sweetest pleasures - but before you sip, you must equip!

For optimal sampling, experts suggest close attention to three sensory components: look, smell, and taste. So, let’s pop the cork and get things flowing!

Page 16: RSVP Montgomery Mar/Apr 2009

Forget your mom’s table manners… wine tasting is the one event where you are encouraged to smell before sampling. To properly release the aroma, fi ll your glass 1/3 full, keep the base on a table and rotate it until you develop a small “cyclone.” As wines age and settle over time, swirling revives the fragrance, often referred to as the “bouquet.” So what will this whiff reveal? It could be strawberries, melons, apples, and sometimes even prunes or bananas.

Bottle of Red, Bottle of White… Billy Joel sings of the two and makes the choice sound easy. While red and white are basic, the varietal hues are complex. A prismatic experience, red wines appear in shades of red, purple, or maroon, while white wines, clear in appearance, can be gold, pale yellow or even straw-like. Close attention to the pigment of wine gives clues to both the fl avor and age. For example, the deeper, murkier colors of reds usually accompany more fl avorful wines - often referred to as “full-bodied.” Considering age, a younger white wine looks closer to the clear end of the spectrum, whereas, a young red wine is more toward the purple and ruby end. Your wine has legs… but do you know how to use them? While looking at the color, notice the opacity. Ask yourself if the wine is clear/transparent or cloudy/opaque? When you tilt your glass and swirl the wine gently, does it coat the glass and run down? The coating ability determines the “legs” of the wine and offers clues to progress your palate. Addition-ally, this process helps you see the colors better.

WINE TASTINGS

Savor the sip. Your tongue and the roof of your mouth are covered with thousands of tiny taste buds, so to fully engage, take in a decent mouthful and roll it around. The tip of your tongue detects sweetness, so right away you’ll be aware of the residual sugar. In the middle of the tongue, you will pick up more of the varietal characteristics. Then notice the linger-ing aftertaste; a long pleasing one is the sign of a high quality wine. Most important is to taste a variety so you can identify your personal favorites and feel more knowledgeable when pairing with cuisines. Until you’re comfortable, rely on experts like Mark of MarChelle’s Bistro and Bakery, “We fi rst explore and offer wines to pair with our menu at the restaurant. Then we expand that list with other options that range from great value wines to the Trophy wines found on the special Owner’s Reserve List.”

CelebrateDon’t bottle up your desire to experience and appreciate wine. Few of us are trained sommeliers, so trust your initial impression when sampling. After you have discovered your favorites, confi dently make your purchase, knowing you will enjoy it to the last drop. To further your knowledge, in addi-tion to tastings, consider memberships like the “Cellar Club” at Ted “The Wine Guy” & Co., where you are exposed to members-only wines and receive discounts throughout the year. Your personal cellar will expand in no time. Swirl, sniff and sip, hold your glass by the stem, and toast to your sensory celebration.

Coupling locale and romance for a perfect vacation

connectionstwo are BETTER

If love is a many-splendored thing – a

sumptuous array of passions and pleasures

shared between two desiring hearts – then

a romantic vacation should be no different.

Whether you are getting away to fall in

love or celebrate it, certain destinations are

almost guaranteed to conjure up that beloved

butterfl y feeling. Consider the following your

“sure thing” list of romantic locale:

Ignite the fl ame

Head west to Aspen, Colorado and seek the snuggle-potential of comfy log cabins, stone fi replaces and bubbling hot tubs. The fresh alpine air and beautiful mountain view are liter-ally breathtaking as you elevate to high altitudes and climatic extremes. Enjoy the outdoors together and take a hot air balloon fl ight, a white water rafting excursion, or sleigh ride. Ice-skating, snowmobiling and snow skiing are also popular activities for couples. After a long day on the slopes, get cozy by the fi re with a hot cup of cocoa or glass of wine.

Rustic Retreat

In a country known for its romantic atmosphere, love is truly in the air in St. Paul de Vence, France. This hilltop village in Provence personifi es your fabled images of France with breathtaking views of the sea and mountains. Lined with beautiful stone walls and winding cobblestoned streets, lovers can wander hand-in-hand through the charming art galler-

ies, boutiques and sidewalk cafes. Lose all inhibitions and lock lips with your honey near the Great Fountain or hold each other tight as you tour the twelfth century dungeon. Historic chapels and nearby villages of Vence and Tourettes Sur Loup make this rustic style destination a charming choice to explore. Romance and Relaxation

If sipping an umbrella drink and relaxing on the beach is more your style, consider a trip to St. Lucia in the Carib-bean, a volcanic island with spectacular mountain ranges. Flourishing rain forests lie within the interiors of the mountains and the golden sandy beaches are shaded by palm trees. In addition to nature, St. Lucia offers fine din-ing at restaurants with dramatic seascapes, luxury resorts and intimate spots for making memories. Plan a couple’s massage, walk barefoot on the sun-kissed beaches and bathe in the spectacular waterfalls. Plantation Paradise

Royal Plantation is one of Sandals‚ all-inclusive resorts lo-cated in the tropical paradise of Jamaica. Luxurious suites offer stunning ocean views and a golf course perched 700 feet above the sparkling sea. White sandy beaches offer a café, bar and a host of water sports. All guests can benefit from the complimentary beach butler service where you are waited on hand and foot-cocktail anyone? A daily afternoon tea time takes place on the terrace. This is a great option for couples wanting all the indulgences of a luxurious, romantic vacation, without the hefty price tag.

The beautiful view overlooking the Mobile Bay was the idyllic backdrop for the wedding ceremony of Jenni McInnis and Paul Register. Jenni and Paul chose the

Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama as the destination for their wedding on June 7, 2008. Wedding planner, Mary Sanders of Mary Me gladly jumped on board to help this couple plan their destination wedding.

The weekend started off with a luncheon for the bridesmaids at The Fairhope Inn, while the guys played a round of golf at the Robert Trent Jones trail. After the wedding rehearsal, the couple entertained their guests at a dinner at The Wash House. The wedding took place Saturday, on the Grand Lawn. Montgomery photographer Greg Johnson was there to capture the whole weekend of festivities.

As family and close friends entered the ceremony, an aisle of rose petals led the way to an arbor covered in pink shades of roses and peonies. The Penny Shenkel Orchestra performed during the ceremony and continued the romantic vibe through cocktail hour, as guests enjoyed a breathtaking view of the bay and a made to order sushi bar on the terrace of the Grand Hotel.

When the ballroom doors opened for the reception, Tiffany blue and white, signature cocktails were passed to everyone as they entered. The linens on the tables carried out the Tiffany blue theme with lamour and bichon cloths. Stephanie Easterling of Wildflowers, decorated each table with beautiful arrangements of pink peonies, green hydrangeas and pink roses. Guests indulged in an assortment of food stations plump with beef tenderloin, a mashed potato bar, and an elaborate seafood spread of jumbo gulf shrimp, oysters on the half shell and sautéed crab claws. In the lounge, a ten foot long, ice bar stocked the signature drink of the night in ice martini luges. Decorative draping uplit with a Tiffany blue hue dressed the bar and added to the luxurious atmosphere as guests danced to the band, Powerhouse.

As the night went on, the brother of the bride, John McInnis, had a special treat for the bride and groom. He asked all the guests to make their way back to the terrace where they were surprised with a spectacular fireworks show. When everyone made it back to the ballroom The Grand Hotel staff had a late night snack of mini burgers waiting on them. Jenni and Paul danced all night with their guests and a great time was had by all!

GO FOR THE GOLD!GO FOR THE GOLD!For those of you who fi nd hitting the gym to be a grind, RSVP’s Fitness Fair was just the event to help you reclaim the fun and fervor in your workout. A variety of instructors, chefs, and trainers were there to provide guidance to attendees in how to adopt a healthier, more satisfying lifestyle. Willing participants were led through eight minute speed rounds, which allowed them to take in the wealth of knowledge and assistance from the vendors. Among the over a dozen vendors were MJ Yoga, Healthwise Foods, and Rayfl ex to dem-onstrate the latest cutting edge supple-ments and personal training techniques. For relief from the normal aches & pains associated with an active lifestyle, PT Solutions demonstrated the newest physical therapy treatments, while Zink Chiropractic ably illustrated why health is much more than simply “not feel-ing pain.”

Lest one get the idea that the fair was all “pain” and no “gain,” healthy and delicious food and drink were also pro-vided to the lucky attendees. Eastside Grille, Scott Street

Deli, and Steak Out provided a delec-table selection of fruit, raw and grilled vegetables, grilled chicken, and turkey sandwiches. Smoothie King provided a bountiful selection of fruit smooth-ies and protein shakes for sampling, as well. Providing a perfectly exuberant vibe to the proceedings was Mix 103’s JT, as he emceed the event with his own witty and entertaining fl air, drawing

door prizes throughout, which included six months of free Gold’s gym membership, Steak Out gift certifi cates, and skin care products by Arbonne. Truly, a bold and unique fi tness experience was enjoyed by all those who attended this special event.

Every year on December 31st, the world holds its breath and cheers as the clock strikes twelve. People all over unite in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead... It was no different here in the River Region, as RSVP Montgomery and Eastside Grille partnered for an all-night gala with approximately two hundred in attendance. Streams of sparkling stars and spirals hung from the rafters as the room was bathed in soft light, framing the smiling faces of partygoers. The timbre of the room varied from festive early in the night, as all sipped their fi rst cocktails and enjoyed appetizers, to downright rowdy, as the witching hour approached, culminating one of the most colorful talent contests in city history. Participants took the stage for entertainment that ranged from stand-up comedy to break dancing, but most entertaining had to be the karaoke singers that included both stellar and off-key performances. For the winners, cash prizes and bar tab vouchers were awarded. Just before midnight, party favors and complimentary champagne were passed out to all, and the group countdown began! At midnight, hugs and kisses were exchanged between many, and couples shared the dance fl oor as the traditional Auld Lang Syne was played. For the singles in attendance, Madam Malik was on site to turn the tarot cards and predict when they would fi nd true love. With the New Year successfully heralded in, everyone resumed the party well past closing time. Upon departure, dozens of guests took advantage of the complimentary transportation provided by Touch of Class Limousine Service. Once again, “RSVP” put on a fantastic event with “NO REGRETS.”

flows from southern rock breakout, Saving Abel during a performance of their near platinum single. If you have turned on a radio lately, you know who they are. Their ballad “Addicted” was the most played song on the active rock format during 2008, and now their current hit, “18 Days,” is quickly following in its footsteps.

Vocalist, Jared Weeks, and guitarist, Jason Null, formed the band in 2004 in Corinth, Mississippi. By 2005, the band had picked up studio guitarist, Scott Bartlett, drummer Blake Dixon, and bassist, Eric Taylor. The sonic influences for the band are Cash, The Allman Brothers Band, Three Doors Down, Prince, grunge rock, and everything in between. In a 2008 interview with USA Today, Null said that “Once [they] recorded the song, Addicted, [they] became Saving Abel…”

Why Music? “With most people it is about sound, but there is a feeling you get when you are playing music that is not captured by words. It’s a feeling,” says Scott, describing his musical motivation. Jared understood the power of music from his early childhood, when giving up his room so that his father’s friends could come over to play music. Now in his own musical journey, he appreciates what music can do. “Music speaks all languages. Whether it is English, Blues, Folk, Hindu, or American it is about sound.” Jason added, “It’s in my blood…it is all I have ever wanted to do.”

Throughout the past three visits to the River Region, the guys of Saving Abel delivered what they promised, a rockin’ time. Most recently, at Off the Wagon, they

were off the hook with a full weekend of excellent rock shows. A high point was opening with hit song, “18 days,” a track dedicated to service men and women around the world. While holding a cluster of dog tags given to him by members of the military, Jared explained that you don’t have to “support Bush or Obama. Republicans or Democrats.” Lifting up the tags he emphasized, “We support [the troops].” The energy level soared and became uncompromising.

Sturgis is, to date, the band’s favorite recollection of antics from the road. Their tale begins in laughter on the subject of road scars they each possess. After playing the Sturgis bike rally in North Dakota and leaving a rowdy party and less than thirty miles into the trip to the next show, the need arose to prove a point less than thirty miles into the trip to the next show. Scott and Jason found the need to illustrate the classic

south, it has a lot of musical legacies.” Scott said. There are a lot of good things that have come out of our area. They all agree Steve Hall and Chris Rambo have been instrumental in making things happen for Saving Abel here in the River Region, and are an asset to the Montgomery area music scene.

If you missed Saving Abel this time around, you will have to wait for the big show. On the heel of a tour with Shinedown, Buckcherry and Avenged Sevenfold, they are now embarking on a North American Arena Tour opening for platinum recording artists, Nickelback along with Seether - a “must see” show coming to the Southeast. The full list of dates is available on their website as well as ways to get more news on the band.

point ‘this is how we do it in…’ Keeping in mind the party before and now, and a series of events and horseplay caused a spark. The bus eventually had to be stopped to allow the guys to get their bearings. The flame came in great rock star fashion; somehow Jason was able to snuff out a cigarette on Scott’s chest. Infuriated, the duo wrestled in bunk alley on the bus, and Scott attempted to attack Jason with nailclippers. The bus driver, a former security officer, had to take Scott down. They recount more tales laughing and joking about the events “on the road.”

Endless dates of city after city is enough to make your head swim. It is often possible for the guys to lose touch with what city they are in or even what day it is. Even with their countless venues, they did however, remember Montgomery. “It’s a musical city. This whole area of the country, the mid-

LOOK“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” (F/X channel, Also available on DVD)

Imagine the Seinfeld crew if they were

transplanted to Philly, stripped of all

scruples and tact, and given a beyond-

healthy dose of reprobate behavior and

more cable-friendly vocabulary (you’d

be surprised what they can say on basic cable these days), and you’ll have some idea of the

warped delights that this great sitcom provides. Following the pursuits of four shiftless

twentysomethings as they (barely) operate a neighborhood dive bar, this show defines “anti-

PC,” as one early episode actually had one of its characters falsely claim to be dying of cancer

to win the affections of a girl.

falsettos, this track is exactly what the mind needs while facing

down a difficult economy and impending taxation: a joyful Ibiza

vacation, thoughtfully condensed into five danceable minutes.

Kings of Leon - Aha Sheak Heartbreak (2005, album)

My beloved publisher has been on me for months to mention this Tennessee rock band,

whose most recent album debuted in the top 10 and whose single “Sex on Fire” hit number

one on the modern rock charts. Fortunately, I have nearly as much glowing admiration for

Kings of Leon as I have for her, so I am happy to oblige. But rather than pimp their already-

successful current CD, I wish to direct you to this, their amazing 2005 album, containing two

of the best southern alt-rock songs ever written: “King of the Rodeo” & “The Bucket.”

I have lived all over the country during my adult life, most of it spent in large urban cities, and

I can say without hesitation that this restaurant/bar nestled off of Taylor Road in Hampstead

is among the most gorgeously decorated I have ever seen. I will spare you my clumsy

approximation of its intricately lovely interiors, so I encourage you to see it for yourself, as

there is no other experience in Montgomery like it. Go for the immaculate decor, stay for

the wonderful cuisine.

The 16th Annual Vintage Affair was held at the Wynlakes Golf and Country Club, which was transformed into an “Evening in ROMA” by the talented, Bob Vardaman of Events Management, who has implemented the theme for the wine-inspired event for the last several years. The Vintage Affair logo, emblazoned on a huge red satin banner, Caesar and his court, guards and living statuary all contributed to the theme of the evening. Dee Coleman and Karen Northcut, also in Romanesqe costumes, were there to greet the 500 guests, who along with sponsors and contributors, helped raise close to $400,000 for the research, education, advocacy and patient support programs of the American Cancer Society.

Suzanne and Steve Davidson were chosen “Angels” for 2009. Steve donated two portraits, one of Johnny Cash and the other of Mick Jagger, painted by international artist Bryan Olsen. The portraits were commissioned for a special birthday performance in celebration for Suzanne.

This event is a labor of love for everyone involved, as most know a cancer survivor or remember a victim as they support the effort. The Vintage Affair is recognized as a premier event in the Southeast.

Beginning his training at age 17 with the Israel National Ballet Company, Mr. Lazar has compiled a resume matched only by a precious few in the world of dance. Before coming to Montgomery, he both founded and directed the Joffrey Ensemble Dancers, the performance company associated with the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. He also founded LazarBalletNYC during his time in New York city. In addition, Mr. Lazar has experienced great acclaim as a dancer, working as a principal performer with the New Jersey Ballet, where he was a standout in ballets such as Balanchine’s Tarantella, Stars & Stripes, Romeo & Juliet, and Le Corsaire. More recently, Mr. Lazar has focused his remarkable creative vision on choreography. In the past decade, he has been commissioned to create ballets for the New Jersey Ballet Company, Atlanta’s Georgia Youth Ballet, the Berkshire Albany Ballet, and Japan’s Kumamoto Ballet. Among the performed pieces Mr. Lazar has choreographed are Surrender @

After 50 years in existence, The Montgomery Ballet is experiencing a renaissance. Under the master tutelage of its Artistic Director, Elie Lazar, the Ballet offers those unfamiliar an opportunity to experience for the fi rst time what it means to witness poetry in motion.

Love, A Night in the Tropics, Concerto for Dancers and String Orchestra, Come In, Dance with me to the End of Love, and Masa. Bringing his singular imagination to Montgomery, Mr. Lazar has endeavored to make the world of dance accessible to any and all those who wish to take in its unique aesthetic pleasures. To this end, he has assembled a troupe of top dancers of different ages, geographic areas, and cultural backgrounds. In fact, there is only one of the dancers who hails from the River Region, Abigail Maruna, and she is also the youngest of the group, aged 17. The rest of these phenomenal performers were selected from across the country. Some come from southern locales as close as Brewton, AL (Ginny Smith), and Atlanta, GA (Christopher Ashe and Kyana Neller). Others hail from the Southwest (Paul Gilliam calls Oklahoma home, while Joseph Villalobos and Patrick Willison are from Texas). While still others have traveled all the way from California (Alexandra Giuffre, Laura Villalobos, and Valeska Mosich-Miller), Colorado (Molly Wagner), New Mexico (Nicole Miller), and New York (Colin Hislop and Ian Morris) to be here. In fact, three of the performers trace their path to our lovely city from outside the country, having been born in Israel (Moran Cardon and Tamar Sandler) and Amsterdam (Noa Cohen).

Despite their diverse background, the members of the Montgomery Ballet are a close knit group. After sitting down and talking with them for just a few minutes, one often hears the group describe themselves as a “family.” Hearing their absolutely daunting work schedule (the group practice together for several hours a day, six days a week), one can understand how such tight bonds are formed. Many of the performers call each other roommates, and two of the performers (Joseph & Laura Villalobos) are married. According to Mr. Lazar, having the group form such closeness has always

been his design. To execute such graceful and athletic movements as their performances require, the group must achieve a level of comfort and intimacy with one another to pull off these intricately difficult moves. When he talks of his group, Lazar often speaks of the importance of two qualities which his recitalists share: a strong passion for their art and a luminescent personality which shines through in their performance. Having met with and observed this vital group of dancers, one sees ample evidence that these high goals are being met, and finds more than ample reason to attend an enthralling season of our Montgomery Ballet.
