Examination Results

Introduction

The University of Sydney was incorporated byan Act of the Legislature of New South Waleson 1st October, 1850, and was the first univer-sity to be established in Australasia. The Actof incorporation was amended by subsequentActs enlarging the scope of the University andthe whole have been consolidated in the Uni-versity and University Colleges Act 1900-1973.

By a Royal Charter issued 27th February,1858, the Degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Masterof Arts, Bachelor of Laws, Doctor of Laws,Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Medicinegranted by the University of Sydney are entitledto rank, precedence and consideration as if theDegrees had been granted by any University ofthe United Kingdom.

Women were admitted to membership of theUniversity in 1881, and three years later weregiven the same rights as men students.

By the University and University CollegesAct of 1900-1973, the University of Sydney isdeclared to be a body politic and corporate,consisting of a Senate constituted of four Fel-lows appointed by the Governor, one Fellowelected by and from the members of the Legis-lative Council, one Fellow elected by and fromthe members of the Legislative Assembly, eightFellows elected by and from such members ofthe full-time staff of the University as may beprescribed by the By-laws, ten Fellows who arenot members of the full-time staff of the Uni-versity as prescribed by the By-laws electedby the graduates of the University, three Fel-lows who are not members of the full-timestaff of the University as prescribed by theBy-laws elected by and from candidates en-rolled for a degree or diploma in the Univer-sity, the Chancellor if he is not otherwise aFellow, the Vice-Chancellor for the time being,and three Fellows elected by the aforesaidFellows. The Chancellor and the Deputy Chan-cellor are elected by the Senate. The Senatehas power to appoint all Professors and other

employees, and has the entire management andsuperintendence over the affairs of the Uni-versity, with power to make by-laws governingthe. discipline, curriculum, and other matters,subject to the approval of the Governor.

There is a Professorial Board, the function ofwhich is to further and co-ordinate the workof the Faculties and Departments and encour-age scholarship and research. The Facultiesand Boards of Studies are responsible for thesupervision of teaching and the conduct ofexaminations.

The ten faculties in order of establishment inthe University are: the Faculties of Arts, Law,Medicine, Science, Engineering, Dentistry,Veterinary Science, Agriculture, Economics andArchitecture. There are also five Boards ofStudies which supervise the award of degrees:the Boards of Studies in Divinity, Social Work,Music, the Board of Studies for the Degree ofMaster of Education, and the Board of Studiesin Education for the Degree of Bachelor ofEducation.

For its general purpose, the University isfinanced by statutory and special grants fromthe New South Wales Government, by sub-sidies from the Commonwealth Government,by fees paid by students and by income frombenefactions. In 1972 the New South WalesGovernment statutory grant was $250,000 andwith additional special grants, the total of theNew South Wales Government contribution was$13,564,534. The University received in 1972a subsidy of $10,073,000 from the Common-wealth Government under a formula designedto provide Commonwealth funds for Univer-sity purposes. The University also received in1972 $147,400 from the New South WalesGovernment and $79,600 from the Common-wealth Government, a total of $227,000, forrecurrent costs of teaching hospitals. Theamount received from fees was $4,922,220,from endowments $488,443, and from othersources $443,316.

As grants for expenditure on Universitybuilding projects, etc., $1,677,603 was receivedfrom the Commonwealth Government and$2,345,410 from the State Government.

An amount of $889,211 was received fromthe Commonwealth Government to finance re-search projects supported by the AustralianResearch Grants Committee.

As special grants for expenditure on Researchand Research Training, $216,665 was receivedfrom the Commonwealth Government and$216,666 from the State Government.

When the University was first established in1852 at the Sydney College Buildingnow theSydney Grammar School near Hyde ParktheUniversity had a staff of three Professors anda total enrolment of fourteen students.

Today the University has a staff of about3,450, of whom about 1,150 are members ofthe full-time academic staff of the University(Professors, Associate Professors, Readers,

Lecturers, etc.), and a student enrolment ofabout 17,100.

The main University site, adjoining Parra-matta Road and City Road, covers a total areaof about 68 hectares, comprising 47 hectaresadministered by the University and 21 hectaresgranted to the six Affiliated Colleges. (A planof the site appears inside the front cover.) Inaddition, several important parts of the Uni-versity are located away from the main site.These include the Law School in Phillip Street,Sydney, the Dental Hospital in Elizabeth Street,Sydney, the University farms at Camden, theCrommelin Biological Research Station at PearlBeach, the Castle Hill Research Station, theNorth-West Wheat Research Institute at Nar-rabri, the McGarvie Smith Animal HusbandryFarm near St Mary's, the Narrabri Observa-tory, the Molonglo Radio Observatory at Bun-gendore, the Fleurs Radio Astronomy Stationnear St Mary's and the Livingston Farm Man-agement Institute at Moree.

The eighty-five departments in the Univer-sity between them span a very large range ofinterests. In all of them active researches^ andother scholarly activities are carried out aimedat advancing the fund of human knowledge. Inthe physical and biological sciences, facilitiesinclude radio telescopes, a high resolution massspectrometer, computers and electron micro-scopes. In the humanities and the socialsciences, a language laboratory has beenestablished and library holdings of researchmaterials are being strengthened. The FisherLibrary has the largest University collection inAustralia and is growing rapidly.

In addition to the Calendar the Universitypublishes annually handbooks for each Faculty,the Board of Studies in Education for the De-gree of Bachelor of Education, PostgraduateStudy in Law, Postgraduate Study in Engineer-ing and the Law Extension Committee (eachone dollar plus postage) and copies of thesemay be obtained on application to theRegistrar.
