INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION

To understand Rudyard Kipling’s works of literature one would need to understand his background and his understanding of nature, animals, and exotic destinations. Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, now a metropolis known as Mumbai in India. However, he was educated in England as a boy and then he would later return to India and travel to other far off places such as South Africa and Japan. In his travels it would open his mind and lead him on many adventures, which can be found in his novels, stories, short stories, and “Just so Stories.”

Commonalities in his Commonalities in his WorksWorks

In Rudyard Kipling’s works you can see commonalities in his themes, characters, and settings. You can see it in his themes and settings such as war in Kipling’s Gunga Din which came from his personal experience while writing during WWI. In his characters you see a common occurrence with animals of the wild jungle such as The Jungle Book and Just So Stories or then with people, it was common of him to use soldiers or children. Rudyard Kipling shows his love for adventure in his stories and his descriptions of the story settings. In his Just So Stories he writes with similar characters of the animal kingdom with the camel, whale, leopard, and cat. Each story tells a tale of the animals journey or something about itself like, “How the Whale Got His Throat” or “The Cat That Walked by Himself.”
