His tackling has been excellent and his handling and kicking very safe, but must try and get more length to his kicks. Uses his speed to advantage. ERIC JONES Wing three-quarter whose handling is exceptionally good. Safe touchfinder and tackler, but should go for the line harder, and watch your tongue, Eric. ROY TRUEMAN Fast wing three-quarter whose handling is weak. Shows plenty of promise. KIRKHAM J.B. Very fast centre with plenty of thrust. Tackling and handling good but he is inclined to try and go through on his own. Has been an excellent Secretary. JACKIE ROBINSON Fast and eager wing three-quarter. Tackles and handles well. RALPH O'DONNELL An excellent stand off half. Sells a beautiful dummy, and is adept at making openings for his team mates. A deadly tackler and a most consistent goal kicker. RAY BARRATT A little scrum half with plenty of "go." Uses the ball cleverly but must not do the same with his tongue. Must make his passes harder. BRIAN BEAUMONT A big forward who combines well with his three-quarters. Jumps very well in the lineout and is always at the front during forward rushes. Tackles well. THORPE P. A tall forward who is invaluable in the lineout and good in the loose. Has a surprising turn of speed. SIDNEY M. BOULTON A big forward with a very strong kick. Tackles and catches well. DUNCAN PERRY A very good hooker discovered very late. Youngest in the team but one of the hardest workers. Always with the ball, and a deadly tackler. MARK ABBOTT Worked well for most of the season. Very hard worker. Tackles well and stays up with the ball. MARTIN M. HUGHES A hard working forward with plenty of weight and speed. Has striven hard to control his tendency to kick haphazardly. LEO WHITE A big forward who seems to prefer the five-eighths position. Tackles very well and has made several good runs. Has played consistently well all the season but must learn to control his tongue. ADRIAN WOMERSLEY A loose forward who is always very good but with spells of real brilliance. Very fast and a keen tackler. An excellent Treasurer.

JIM FOSTER Scrum leader and easily the outstanding forward. Big, fast and powerful - a real inspiration to the forwards and combines well with the backs. An example to the team. This year's Vice-Captain. DEREK D. WILKINSON This year's Captain and one of the most powerful boy players in Yorkshire. His thirteen stones-o odd of moving speed has more than once turned defeat into victory. As centre three quarter he has been a power in the team for five years and his team mates view his departure to fresh fields with real regret. W.J. Leonard. Rugby Report 1947-48 This year's team has kept up the standard of the last four years and has retained the unbeaten home record. Three matches have been lost away, however, to our old enemies, Wath, who gave us a severe thrashing, and to West Leeds and Silcoates who avenged their defeats at our hands earlier in the season. One big fault of the team has been its tendency to criticise referees; it is a fault shared by everyone apart from our level-headed Treasurer (Adrian Womersley) and it is one that must be controlled. Apart from this failing, the traditions of sportsmanship have been kept up. The Second Team has also enjoyed a good season, winning six matches and losing two. Points for: 150, Points against: 30. With only a small fixture list the Under 15's have played very creditable football which gives us high hopes that we are leaving the Hemsworth Rugger Tradition in no unworthy hands. Results - Played: 3, Won: 3, Lost :0, Drawn: 0, Points for: 25, Points against: 8. Our thanks are due to Mrs. Cliffe and her maids for the teas they have provided throughout the season. We also extend our thanks to Mr. Leonard, Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Blewitt for the encouragement and advice they have given us. Derek A. Wilkinson U6A. Selected for the West Riding Rugby Team

Cross Country

This year's Cross Country Race was held in bright sunshine and on a hard baked course. Everything was favourable to a fast time but no records were broken. The House placings were:- 1. Talbot 2. Holgate 3. Guest 4. Price. The Senior individual winner was Foster (Time 18min 15secs) with Henderson and Fozzard 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Junior individual winner was James (Time 19min 30secs) who finished in grand style and well ahead of Allen (2nd) and Stead (3rd). Jim Foster, L6A Price Swimming

Last season was not as successful as the previous one, but was very satisfactory on the whole, being remarkable for the number of first and second form pupils who gained certificates. The Swimming Cup was again won by Talbot, with Guest, Holgate and Price close behind. The Gala at the end of the season was very enjoyable and there were some thrilling performances although no new records were established. The Senior Championship winners were S. Sutcliffe of Guest, and Jones E. of Guest. The Junior Championship winners were S. Williams of Talbot and Owen P. of Guest. Finally, on behalf of the School, I should like to express our thanks to Mr. Ward, Mr. Atack, Mr. Oaks, Miss Lawton - who unfortunately has left us for married life - Miss Davies and Miss Carter for their advice and encouragement during the season. Eric Jones L6A.

Cricket First XI

Back Row L-R: Barker, Martin Hughes, Leo White, Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Hamilton, Mr. Leonard, Peter Collette, Milner, Street. Front Row L-R: Ralph Miles, Derek Wilkinson, Ralph O’Donnell, Jim Foster (Capt.), Bill Rainforth (Vice-Capt), Sid Boulton, Brian Beaumont. The First X1 has not yet won a match. We have played three matches, lost two and drawn one. However, despite this bad start, one can rest assured that the team is capable of doing much better. The batting especially needs a considerable amount of practice. It is encouraging to note the keen and smart fielding of the team and the way they determine to save every single. The material and spirit are there - all we need now is practice and plenty of it. The Second XI has had a most encouraging start, winning two and drawing one out of its first four matches. With such an able and adventurous skipper as Lumb at the helm, their run of success is likely to be a long one. Both teams would like to thank Mrs. Cliffe and her staff for the provision of refreshments, Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitch and the members of Staff for their coaching. RAINFORTH An opening batsman who gives promise of many runs. An excellent fielder at point and a most helpful Vice-Captain. MILNER An attractive batsman with a great variety of shots. Must make himself more alert in fielding. BOULTON A newcomer who can hit hard or "put the shutters down" as the occasion demands. Would improve if he developed his off shots. A very keen fielder. BEAUMONT A medium pace bowler who commands a good length and whose natural swing is quite troublesome to the batsman. An excellent fielder at "square leg." Has not yet had a chance with the bat. BARKER An aggressive left-hand batsman but he should practice his drives more instead of relying on his leg shots. A good fielder. PARKER A newcomer who has made good use of both the bat and the ball, and he fields well. A capable all- rounder. WHITE This year's spin merchant who commands a good length and whose variation of pace is likely to pay good dividends. His batting would be much better if he were a little more patient. A safe fielder at "mid-on". MILES, R. A medium pace off-break bowler. Has bowled very well so far and has done so by virtue of his good length and his accuracy. Hits the ball hard but needs some practice on defensive shots. Fields well. HUGHES A fast-medium bowler who gets a considerable amount of pace from the wicket. His merry face and shocking mass of hair apparently dispirit the bowlers. This year's secretary. O'DONNELL This year's wicket keeper who improved in every match. His combination with White's "slows" should, as the season progresses, bear fruit. WILKINSON A medium paced bowler who would achieve better results if he bowled to the middle stump than to the leg stump. A very safe fielder and a powerful hitter, but his batting needs practice. BROWN A steady batsman but his fielding needs a great deal of practice.

FOSTER A most conscientious captain who has shown very good judgement in arranging his attack and defence. An unperturbed opening bat who inspires his team with confidence. (W.J.L.) Foster J. U6A. Cricket Second XI
